Recently lowered. Tok tok tok noise when turning.
« on: September 24, 2016, 07:01:04 pm »
Hi

Just lowered my car on H&R 30mm springs on my mk5 gti. Is it normal for them to make a tok tok kinda noise when turning left or right. Even when stationary?

I'm not certain but could be the subframe bolts. There is a mod which involves them replacing the originals with thicker ones. Kit costs £15.

More knowledgeable chaps will be along soon tho

Was everything torqued up nice and tight, and the top mount bolts?

I don't know to be honest. I took the car to a reputable garage. I would of thought they torqued them up properly. I may wait a week and if it persists I will take it back to them.

Is there anyway I can check myself. What shall I check?

Top mounts seem tight. The mechanic changed both sides top mounts as he said they need changing. He changed just the top mounts and not the bearings.

I don't think it's the bearings as it would have made a noise while the springs were stock?

Car handles brilliant and makes no noises when going over bumps. Just this tok tok tok while turning kind of noise is ruining the experience some what.

Mine did the same mate and I was well stressed. It went after a while, I think it just needs time to settle.

yeh it is really stressing me out. Especially when my Mr's points it out and says "what's wrong with your car when you spend so much time and money on it?"  :slap: arrrggggh

Yes, I fitted Bilstein's with H&R lowering springs and also changed the top mounts. The noise was stressing me out but after a week or so it went away. I think it just needs a good run out to settle down.

My car is still making this noise at very very low speed or when stationary. I believe that it is the steering rack. Done some research and if i am right in saying then there was a recall on some steering racks.

So basically what's you're saying is that since lowering my car the rack is screwed? Because before I lowered it, it was fine. I can't see how lowering a car can eff up a steering rack.

It literally started to make the noise as soon as I left the garage.

It hasn't necessarily broken the rack but it could have made the noises more audible. I had my car on a ramp and my noise is definitely coming from the rack. Not saying yours is the same.

I had that on an old E46 BMW, I had over torqued the Strut nut when I put the springs etc on, so the bearing couldn't turn with the wheel, the tok tok was the spring turning. Maybe worth a look.
