Wheel bearing on way out but which one?
« on: January 01, 2017, 03:06:17 pm »
Have a whiring sound when driving sounds like it's a wheel bearing coming to the end of it life, only issue is I don't know which one  :rolleye:

Does anyone have any advice or guidance how to diagnose which one it would be? I have jacked each corner and spun each wheel and checked for play but not managed to find anything that way..

That's normally the way I'd determine which one bud. You sure both aren't going?

I would firstly lift up your car and look for physical play by rocking your wheel to see is there any play in there...
There should be none.

You can also spin a wheel and listen is there any grinding sound coming out.

This are first things you can do on your driveway.

I just had my offside rear wheel bearing changed as it was very noisy.

Best thing to do it jack the whole rear up and then spin the wheels one after the other so you can directly compare the two. I found you had to give them a bit of welly to get them spinning fast enough that you could hear it.

Once the wheel and disc were off you can spin the bearing on it's own very easily, sounded terrible. I should note there was barely any play in the wheel, but still very noisy.

Ok thanks people. Have already jacked spun and checked for play but think I need to try again and spin a bit faster this time

I found if whilst driving you turn left (fast enough to have the bearing whining) and the noise reduces or stops then it's one of the left ones.
If you turn right and it goes then it's usually right hand side, something to do with the load being lessened on that side therefore reducing the friction.
Hard part is working out front or rear  :signLOL: I had one whining a couple of months ago, sometimes sounded like it was from the front.... it wasn't
hth

I just went for the more expensive of the two option on Euro Car Parts.

Ive ordered some SNR bearings from ECP for £68, VW are £130odd according to the old invoices that came with the car.
I had to order a 30 & 32mm as I dont know what the car has fitted, will return the one not needed.

Take a wheel out, disc, caliper, shield, bearing. Put back together. Depends in what condition your current parts are.
