cam tensioner rattle in cabin

Hi Guys 
Just picked up a Pirelli today  but having drove it for a hour or so on idle in the cabin it sounds like the dreaded diesel rattle!  Its a pretty loud knocking / rattle in the cabin and I cant seem to find where its coming from. When I lift the bonnect you cant really tell. Any idea's? Only got it today through a trader but what to try and find the problem first.

Surely you would hear it with the bonnet open?

And did you turn off all fans inside the car to make sure it's not inside the ventilation system?

Yeah turned off all fans and stereo to check, thats how I noticed it. Once im driving it disappears completly.
I thought that was strange to it does knock a bit in the bay but it's so loud in the cabin.

Sounds like cam chain rattle mate my ed30 was the same loud inside but couldn't hear it under the bonnet

Hay guys, i'm having the same problem with my 05 AXX, can anyone confirm part numbers for the necessary parts that need to be changed?

I have read that these are the parts needed and their part numbers for the Axx?

chain -      part no. S06D109229B
tensioner - part no. S06F109217A
gasket -    part no. 06D103121B
seal -        part no. 06E127248
gasket -     part no. 06F103483D

Also anyone have a link or know the part numbers of the VW locking tools needed for the job?
have also read somewhere that the cam adjuster might need changing if the above parts don't stop the sound, anyone know part number for the adjuster? i no this can be a pricey part

When I had my chain and tensioner replaced I ordered all of the below for my garage of choice to fit, excluding the adjuster which is the top part number. Mine's an '06 BWA but I understand the parts are common between the BWA and AXX.

The garage wern't short of any parts, nor did they have any left over, so I believe this is a comprehensive list. Some parts (bolts) can clearly be re-used but I supplied new to avoid the job being held up by stripped heads or similar.

Anyone knows parts numbers of the VW locking tools needed to do the Chain job? or link to match copy of the tool?

You can't hear the worn chain under the bonnet because the injectors, pump and transmission noises drown it out. 

You generally only need the Cam phaser if it's retaining bolt cheeses on you, which is common.  You need someone to press the tool bit hard onto the bolt whilst you crack it off.

I also had that really annoying knocking in the cabin. Made the car sound like a diesel but no particular spot under the bonnet where it was coming from. That was because it was caused by low oil pressure. Have a look at this thread, all the way through. My mechanic was adamant from the start that it wasnt my chain and tensioner despite me tell him.different. but he was right!

What did measuring blocks 91 and 93 say when you had that O ring problem?  Should be -1KW and 28KW respectively.  I would have thought the latter number would be way off if there was insufficient oil pressure to meet the adjustment target.  Just thinking that might be a good way to confirm if people have the same noise, before pulling it all apart?

Just to clarify for the camshaft adjustment, the actual should fluctuate between +1kw and -1kw of the specified. For AXX the specified is 24kw so the actual should be between 23 & 25kw. Every other engine code (BWA, BYD etc.) the specified is 28kw so the actual should be between 27 & 29kw

Well great news it turns out I was worrying about nothing it wasnt the cam chain rattle, it was the rear heat shield had come lose, so it was giving that knocking and rattle on idle once warm. But now a simple fix and it's so quiet  Can get back to enjoying the car now
