Mk5 GT 140
« on: May 29, 2017, 12:59:14 pm »
Hi all, newbie to the forum. but far from new to VW!
I've owned far too many to mention, mostly mk4's.

Having had my fill of mk4 Golfs and not seeing much else for sale I liked, I started looking at Mk5's.
I've always fancied one but the ones worth having were always a  little out of budget.
Until I spotted a really poor advert for a GT 140 advertised locally at a decent price.
I went for a look, not expecting it to be up to much but apart from the odd little job needing done, it turned out to be a pretty decent car with full service history and a lot of the usual mk5 issues sorted already.
I made an offer and picked it up a few days later.

That was about 2 weeks ago.
The first thing I did was to give it a major cleaning session!
The bodywork was a bit flat looking so I machine polished it followed by a wax with AG HD wax then sealed with Williams Ceramic Coat.
The headlights were dull and yellow looking as well so they were refurbished at the same time.
The rear badges have also been removed.

Next up was the head unit, the standard unit is terrible and there's no AUX or USB so it needed to go.
I looked at the usual stuff but this ex display pioneer head unit with DAB, Spotify, DVD etc came up very cheap at my local Halfords so I had to have it.

Next, it was time to get it a bit closer to the road.
The coilovers from my Leon would fit but it was only a 1.6 and had the 50mm hubs.
The Golf is 55mm so I had a local metalwork company make up a couple of sleeves for me and I refurbished the coilovers before they went on...

And fitted...

Had some issues with shortened drop links causing the ARB to rub on the driveshafts so I bought a new pair of standard links which are working fine.

Next up, my Exeo wheels which were also on the Leon went on.
I refurbished these last year and they still look great.
I swapped the Seat badges for a new set of VW items.

I managed to pick up a set of Edition 30 leather door cards cheaply as well so they're on with the stainless trims swapped for the GT spec ones and I've got mk6 style window buttons and light control switch on route.

And the last mod I've done so far is the lower front bumper spoiler, it's the standard GT item which I colour coded.
It's in one of the pics above.

Plans are to fit a rear GTI lower bumper asap and hunt out a standard GTI rear silencer.

I'll convert the front bumper to GTI spec as well and a set of GTI skirts at some point.
Still undecided whether I want to paint the black section into the front bumper, I quite like it all silver.

That's all for now, more to come soon!

Great progress so far. Looking good  :happy2:

Look out for some GTI headlights or even xenons to make the front stand out. It will make a big difference.

Nice one  :drinking:

Those wheels look really nice on it and the colour coded front splitter makes a huge odds to the look of the front end.

As Prp74 said, the GTi headlights or xenons with the black inner parts look much nicer than the silver standard ones, changed mine recently and it's made the front end look much nicer.

Chris
It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

As Chris said the classix alloys really suit the car. I've seen a set in Anthracite Grey which look stunning.

Had a bit of spare time on my lunch today so I decided since I'll be fitting GTI grills in the near future, to strip and paint the GT centre black and see how it looks.

Quite happy with it although it's not the best picture to show it off really.

Looks smart with the black centre. I actually prefer the GT grill to the GTI one, it's all personal taste though  :drinking:

As Chris said the classix alloys really suit the car.

I actually meant the New Exeo wheels  :happy2: Not seen them on a golf before but they look good.

Another little upgrade that makes a big difference, mk6 style switches.

Very easily fitted and decent quality considering they were less than £30 for the set.
Still have the fuel flap button to fit.

Really liking what you have done with this car so far.

The change of wheels and colour coding on the splitter makes a big difference.

Will be keeping my eye on this  :happy2:

Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated.

Final button of the set fitted, this one really needs the door card removed to fit it but if you take the bottom screws out, you can just about reach the switch to pop it out and refit the new one.

Good luck!
They hardly ever come up for sale and are very rarely cheap!
