I am considering the BW EFR 6758 turbo, by Turbo Zentrum, in replacement of my BW K04 on my mk5 GTI. Availability and tuning are my main concerns...I live in the US. I have reached out to GIAC in Calif. and on another mk5 forum.

Bit of info here, from a while ago:

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=49599.msg568685.msg#568685
Thank you...I read through that the day before I posted the topic because of the date of last post being 2012. I am waiting for a response by GIAC to see what they have for tuning and for what turbos other than my K04. I don't want to sacrifice early rev torque for lag but with a minor HP increase of up to 360 HP @ wheels....425 BHP max.

Those EFR turbos are con-rod snapping, gearbox smashing beasts.  You need to factor that into your budget if you want your engine/trans to last!

Shame you're not near Pennsylvania, otherwise you could pop along to Evans Tuning for a really good tune.  He's one of a small handful I would give my car to in the US of A.

If you want a bit more but without going too mad and without sacrificing spool speed, it's gotta be the TTE420 yardstick hasn't it?  They're doing 20% off at the moment on the facebook page.  APR are also doing 20% off their TTE tune along side it, which is handy.

Yeah, that TTE 420 is one prospect...just 2nd on my list. It may be 1st soon once tuning availability for the EFR runs dry. Likely could run the TTE 420 with current tune until tuner source is found for that one...but you say APR has a tune for the TTE 420?

TTE420 would be my first choice to be honest.  True bolt-on, tried and tested and depending on tune and supporting hardware, capable of way more than 420hp!  It's also been shown to spool quicker than a standard KO4.

I wouldn't run it without a tune.  Much bigger compressor/turbine wheels, so a lot more air flow across the entire rev band.  Or I suppose as a very temporary measure - to get the car to a tuning shop - you could unplug the N75 and just run wastegate pressure.  Leave a spare N75 connected to keep the ECU happy.

Yep APR have a TTE tune.  In fact, when you buy a TTE420, you get a stiffer wastegate spring in the box specifically for the APR tune.  I believe their 20% summer sale ends 1st September, so you've got some time to mull over it.

I might have to look at APR.
I really do not want a third tune, but if GIAC hasn't got another option for me and with Driver Motorsport shutting doors...just might have to do it. Third tune...actually would be my sixth tune!  :rolleye:
AWE Tuning's K04 tune(made by GIAC but different than their own K04 tune),
GIAC's standard K04 tune,
then GIAC'S K04 HO tune,
Driver Motorsport's K04+ tune,
and back to GIAC's K04 HO tune.

We'll see...I've always just planned to stick with the K04. But if I need a turbo, I wouldn't mind a bump in power as long as there isn't much else to do by way of additional mods. Why I hoped GIAC would've contacted me as to what other tunes they might have for the BW efr 6758. Maybe I'll ask them what they do have tunes available for rather than one specific model of turbo. Usually GIAC doesn't charge for a tune swap other than the dealer fee for loading it...so, maybe they have something.

That's why the TTE420 is so popular, it's a true bolt-on and uprated engine internals aren't essential if you don't squeeze every drop out of it.....and there's even an off-the-shelf tune for it  :happy2:

If the EFR size you've chosen ramps in the boost very early and super hard, it would be wise to drop pistons and rods in to cope with the increased stresses, but again, not essential depending on life expectancy.  It's hard to ignore the amount of engine failures on the TFSI tuning FB group at the moment

1st option is a relaxed weekend job.  Get a jug of coffee on, fit the turbo, get it down to your APR rep for a tune.  Enjoy.

2nd option is going to be chasing your tail trying to get a custom tune for it, and the end results may not be as good as the 1st option.

I know what I would do if I were in your shoes

Just bookmarked APR's TTE 420 page.

I emailed my mod-list to GIAC as they contacted me asking for that so they can look at custom tunes they've done for some customers and for which turbo's...the files they've done will still be lying around. If they have a TTE 420 file...likely will not be the $899usd for a switch to APR tunes. :drinking:
