Were There Many Issues With Early Mk7 Gti's?
« on: September 12, 2017, 11:36:01 am »
Hi,

Was just looking on Autotrader there (boring day at work) and noticed that some 2013 and 2014 MK7 GTi's were going for £14-15k.  Thought this seemed a pretty decent price.

Its got me thinking about maybe going for one in the future.  However, I don't want to go from my Mk5 GTi which has never let me down, to getting a early Mk7 that could be full of problems.  I know there is no way to tell if a new car will have major future problems and cost alot in the long run.  But are there any known real issues with these years of car, or are they pretty well made?  Hopefully some current owners can give me some advice.

Thanks

willni

Here's a pistonheads forum engine comparison;

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1620969

these are the main issues;
Timing chain tensioner failure (One member saying his failed on 68k miles but milage is irrelevant and can happen at any point and he had to pay 5k euro for a new engine)
Weak PCV, which can cause rear main crank seal failure
Intake flap diaphragm failure

. I have not seen many if any with these issues. I think you might be referring to the mk6 which is a different engine. I am on most Mk7 GTI and R forums and have never seen a thread about any of the above.

@donovan2123 , are you able to advise of any common issues on this year of Golf that may be able to help me?

Thanks

Well the only issue I have atm is an issue with the thermostate which is almost 600£ lucky I have extended warranty.

There are also clutch issues on the manuals but it does seem to be effecting us market more than UK markets on the GTi.

There also seems to be a trend appearing on white worm alloy wheel issues which plagued mk5 GTi.

Apart from that I can't say I have seen much else.
