Raj's United Grey GTi 2.0 DSG - Build Thread
« on: November 14, 2017, 08:02:12 PM »
Hello all. Raj here. Yorkshire Based.

Welcome to my build thread.

Still new to owning a GTI. I've only ever had cheap runabouts. But managed to save the funds to grab a Mk5 GTI. I've had a couple Corsa's and VW Polo, fastest being my 05 Corsa 1.7SRI. 100BHP. Haha. Diesel heaven.

I figured it was time.  Being a lazy driver that I am, DSG was a must.

The first Golf

2005. Silver 2.0 GTI DSG

No engine upgrades on this beauty , - came with heated leathers, Edition 30 rear lights. 19" Replica Ch Wheels. It had Edition 30 Bumpers all round. Looked awesome. Colour coded to perfection
Paintwork was mint, interior was mint, loved how it drove.

The plans were to get this Remapped and and to add some fast bits. Sadly only drove it 3 months before it got destroyed.   :sad1: :sad1:

Swapped the 19" Reps with 18" Reps to improve ride quality. Felt quicker and handled better. Had issues with rear rubbing.

A week later this happened...  Gutted.

On the plus side I did manage to sneak a road trip to Amsterdam in that time, first ever road trip in a GTI man it was fun. 400 miles from a tank.

The Damage

Didn't bother repairing it as was it was too costly. Thought I could sell it on to someone who could make use of the parts, lad who took it said he was doing a DSG conversion and his GTI was kicking 350-400BHP. Madness.

What it looked like after:

The search to find a better GTI began.

Very thankful for the forum as was able to see what things to look out for, common faults etc. Before buying a GTI Like the DV, PCV. DSG services. Belt changes and whatnot.

6 GTI's later until me and a pal found this beauty.

2005 Steel/United Grey GTI 2.0 DSG

It has full service history, all mains bits upgraded to revised parts courtesy of the previous owner the month before I bought it.

Revision G Diverter Valve
Latest PCV Valve
2x Cambelt Changes in its life.
Just had its DSG serviced. Twice in Its lifetime.
105K
4 new ( budget ) tyres.
And the Cam Follower was changed.

The bits:

Miltek Exhaust - prev owner
Ram Air Intake - prev owner
Polished Monza 2s - prev owner
Edition 30 Front Bumper
R32 style rear bumper
Lowered by 20mm on Eibach Sport-line Springs. - prev owner
Heated Leathers
Electric Lumbar Support
Central Leather Armrest
High-line Clocks
Cruise Control
Multifunctional Steering wheel with Paddle Shift extensions.
RCD 510 with a USB port.
Wrapped trims.
LED Sidelights

The engine hasn't been mapped yet. Roughly pushing 210-215 bhp. With its current mods.

How I got it:

Monza 2s

Mods done so far:

Managed to nab my rear lights from my previous golf before It went.

Edition 30 Lights in:

After I tackled the lights. Wanted to upgrade the interior bits. Didn't like the pioneer stereo as it had no steering wheel controls. Wanted the stereo to look OEM.

Opted for the RCD510 - Delphi version as it allowed for USB ports to be added as well as being quite cheap.  Added a USB port for a finishing touch.  Didn't wanna risk an RNS510. Too much thievery around my ends.

Decided to try wrapping myself as bits were fraying off the DSG and Centre bit, wrapped in gloss black to match the glossy effect on the RCD510.

Side door trims were done in steel grey. Previously carbon fibre which I didn't like.

Pretty much it in terms of interior. - I do recommend getting this little beauty. Holds your phone in place with magnets.  £2.99 on EBay - update. It can come off with harsh acceleration lol. Maybe gorilla tape would get it to stick better.

Future Interior Plans:

Get the 6 CD Changer out and swap it for storage.
New GTI Mats
A set of Winter Mats
New side door trims, grab handle ones
Newer switches. The Mk6 ones.

Edition 30 Bumper - Rear R32 Style Bumper

I really wanted the Ed30 front and rear bumper and managed to grab a good deal from a lad who was breaking his. The headlight washers had been smoothed'd out which was a plus.

Added both bumpers - which took close to 7-8 hours. Studied YouTube vids and helpful guides on here before I got to it.

Currently sits like this:

Colour match isn't perfect so will probs look to get that sorted in the future too. That would be a good time to get some of the rust bubbles sorted.
Thankfully the wings look pretty good and so does the rear boot hatch which do tend to rust badly.

Future Upgrades - Exterior/Performance :

Performance Intercooler
-Maxton Design extensions to the side skirts
-10-15mm Spacers so the Monza's look nicer.
-Stage 1 @ R-Tech to 250-270 BHP.
-Bumper Colour matching. Few rust spots and colour matching on the rear bumper.
-Get the exhaust to sit closer to the rear bumper.
-To remove/replace the engine soundproofing
-Better tyres
-Anti lift kit Whiteline/Super Pro
-Dogbone, Transmittion mounts - to stop the wheelhop.
If the funds allow me to KO4, HPFP. Better Shocks
-Projector Xenon Headlights

Thanks for the comments  :happy2:

Got round to finding some painted side skirts in grey. - another win

Such a pain to fit them on though. I really do recommend ( if your wanting to colour code your skirts) to having your originals smoothed down, and sprayed to help with fitting as these new ones did seem a little shorter. Had to use a heat gun to get the plastic to stretch a little.

To remove I used a T20 to remove 4 bolts, and flat blade to remove existing residue.
Some clips broke so I used some spacers to fit the skirt attachement back on.
Cleaned with alcohol and microfibres clothes.  Then stuck the new ones on.
Stuck an extra layer of double sided just for peace of mind.

Just completes the car now

More pics. Freshly washed.  :happy2:

Really wanna tackle my engine soundproofing, Read a few posts on here on whether it's ok to have off so I'm gong for it

The bits at the bottom of the soundproofing cover are refusing to sit in the holes. Currently held on by Gorilla tape. Any tips on ripping this out ? Bought some clips from eBay but it didn't really hold the bottom parts in place.

Had my canbus changed due to having the battery drain issue. Turned out I had the F revision. Now upgraded to Q.

Had it coded in along with some other mods added by @Pashka
Now it chirps when unlocking << never knew this could be done
Now have additional orange side lights. Look mint
And had the seatbelt chime taken off

Daytime shot

Nightime

Also ordered a replacement keyfob from eBay. £6.50
For 2. Swapped out the internals. Works fine and looks newer

Ordered some cheap led lights from eBay, big flop. All the light came up with errors and gave off a blueish tint. Not the brighter white I was intending. Reverted back to my originals.

Just wanting better quality parking/side lights to match the whitish light of the standard halogen light and foglights.  Until I can save up for  depos

Plan now is to save up for engine/transmission mounts.

Small update:

Bought some 5000K Ulta Ultra Halogen bulbs from euro car parts just under £8. Giving off a nice white tone, looks much better than the standard yellow. Link below.

https://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-parts/car-electrics-and-car-lighting/lighting1/car-bulb/?971775521&0&cc5_847&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIvrv6pLO02AIVYbftCh3iNQi2EAQYASABEgKiBPD_BwE

Found some led error free 501 sidelights from my local maxwise, and also some rear leds number plate lights to try out. Installed them with no errors

Led Sidelights cost £11 and number plate lights cost £10.

Drivers shots

Couple snaps  :happy2:

Looking to get a service soon. What are the best oil, spark plugs, filter etc to get. Also is it worth getting ignition coils done ? From the service book it's looking like they were done 2013 @ 70K. A new Cam follower was put in July this year. Worth getting that checked too ?

There's currently shell Helix Ultra 5w 40 oil in ATM, been topping up with the same stuff. Should I stick to this or go for something else. Any advice would be appreciated  :drinking:

Many Thanks Raj  :happy2:

You could consider Quantum Platinum 5W-40 oil, this is supplied by Volkswagen themselves and is OE Approved (VW 502.00). 5 litres can be had for around £20 if you look on eBay. Round off with a quality oil filter (MANN filter is about fiver from ECP) and you can get a decent oil change done for less than £30!
