Rear Sping Snappy McBrokenface

Snapped a rear coil spring this morning.



Looking at replacements on Eurocarparts it shows two different Sachs springs for the ed30

Does anyone know which is correct?

The other option is to get a set of Eibachs on there, but I don't know if I've got time to get the fronts done aswell. There only £94 on a site buycarparts.com (Not herd of them before) Anyone know how long it nornally takes to swap the fronts? I got the rear spring out in less time than it took my wife to cook dinner.

i'd factor in a couple hours and bearing in mind you need a multi spline socket ( cant remember size)  and a hub spreader tool to do it.   i think from what i was told one sides driveshaft has to come out of the hub too to make clearence to swing the strut out

I've slept on it and I think I'll go for the Eibach Sportlines. I was going to lower it at some point next year anyway. I can use my wifes Beetle to get to work for awhile so I don't need to rush. I've got a spline bit, it looks like I'll need a spreader tool.

I'll call over to TPS at lunchtime and order new strut and axle bolts.

Is the bolt in the rear control arm that attaches to the hub single use?

Anyone know the torque settings for these bolts?

At least 95% of the chassis component bolts are single use.

I've ordered the Eibach Sportlines, they where £140. Picked up all the bolts I need form TPS (£28)

Just need to get the spreader tool now.

Will it cause any major issue driving around for a bit with a lowered backend and standard setup up front?

Nope.  It might feel different on turn-in with stiffer rear springs (same effect as a bigger anti-roll bar) so watch yourself on wet corners!

Thanks. Fingers crossed I'll be ok, but I'll be prepared! Luckly my wifes not using her car much at the moment so I'm not stuck if I have to wait and get more parts.

I've had sportlines on mine for over 2 years now, they are harsher and I'd recommend sticking em on new shocks

100% this. Had to hacksaw a droplink off the front ARB after the strut end had completely rusted can couldnt be undone. Droplinks were ALMOST worse than all the rest of it. I also had to drill out a top mount bolt as it had seperated from the top mount. My car was at about 110k and 10yrs old so kind of expected tbh.

I'll make sure I use heat and spray. I've got a nice impact wrench which should all help.

I intend to update the shocks at a later date, probably VWR's or whatever they are called now

I dont but I'm the third owner so it may have spent some time in the sand and salt. Nothing was unreasonably corroded but I just couldnt get the leverage as the ARB would flex and the car was too close to the ground. That being said I am seeing rust on several of the undercar parts (rear arms are looking dubious) and am replacing them slowly as budget allows and nothing awful given its 10yrs old. Nothing has failed on me yet apart from spring snapping which was pothole related.

The one thing that has worried me is the DSG/mechatronic cover (a flat black painted box on front of gearbox had a load of rust on it when I changed the IC the other day. Sanded it down and applied anti corrosive and painted it over but was worrying. That box was massively worse than any other component on the car, no idea why it was so much more affected.
