S3 brake upgrade, what's discs and pads?
« on: January 01, 2018, 12:41:19 am »
Can't seem to find what discs I need for my upgrade. I was looking at MTEC brakes but they need a regular to check they are the correct ones.

345mm fronts & 310mm discs on the rear.

I went for Mtec dimpled and grooved :happy2:

Ive used tts 340 discs before. 3 sets warped in a year. Not sure why as we never had slammed the brakes. This time round went for 345mm brembo discs and pads. Had no issues so far.

What brand were the discs?  Very surprising if that many OEM ones warped, but they do occasionally have batches that go bad quickly.

The clubsport S discs are good apparently.  No reports of those bad boys warping yet.

One set was pagid, one was trw and I think the last one was brembo.

Ive heard the clubsport ones are good calipers as the piston is a bit bigger compared to s3/r32 ones.

If only you could know in advance.  3 sets of pattern 340mm discs could easily have bought you a set of Clubsport S discs!

I managed to get replacements for them under warranty and then a refund so was ok :)

It is quite difficult to warp brakes these days.
A run out gauge is the only real way to tell, as judder can be caused by all sorts of things, giving the same symptoms.

I fitted mtec drilled / grooved 345mm on my fronts back in September.

This past few weeks I started to get brake judder, only when braking.

I jacked the car up, spin the wheels and confirmed it was only the drivers disc was 'catching' when spinning.

I think it may be due to build of friction material on the disc.

Re trying the bedding in procedure seems to have alleviated the issue for me and the juddering has gone away.

Firm braking (not emergency stop) from 60mph several times, without coming to a complete stop.
Obviously be careful if doing this on a public road!

Do this a few times on the same journey, then let the brakes cool and do again.
