Which engine code?
« on: March 11, 2018, 08:30:11 am »
Hi all newb here. Hoping someone can tell me the best block to use for big power tune? I believe some have cross bolted main caps? Currently have cdl with circa 500hp and want to build a spare race engine. Also can we get apr flowed heads here or are they stateside only? Thanks

Any of the K04 EA113 engines.  BYD Edition 30, CDL S3, Cupra R, MK6 R etc etc

Awesome GTI are APR importers so could probably get the heads.

Yes 4 bolt mains plus bigger wrist pins, stronger cylinder head material, more lift on the HPPF cam lobe, stronger and lower compression pistons etc etc.

A lot of differences for just 30-60hp more than a GTI.

Not correct.  It is only the S3 CDL engines which have a beefed up block, crank and bottom end.  The BYD shares an identical bottom end with the BWA and AXX, and even the 150PS non-turbo 2.0 FSI.

I have previously done considerable research on this very subject, and dispelled many unproven myths that the Ed30 shared the same bottom end as the S3.  It was published in detail on the Golf GTI UK forum.  My diligent research was subsequently confirmed by Volkswagen Motorsport Germany - their published specifications to race teams categorically instructed them to only use the CDL engine, even in the Cupra Cup cars.  They specifically prohibited the Cupra R and Ed30 engines for any competition usage.  Their reason was that the S3 block was cast from a higher strength alloy, and this was NOT shared with any other EA113 2.0 TFSI engines.

So the *1 footnote for the BYD engine is all lies then?   I've seen this written in several sources online and I would prefer to believe that than your 'considerable and diligent research'.

That was the information shared by VW when the Ed. 30 was released in the market.

From the site mate......

169 kW (230 PS), 300 Nm from 2,250 to 5,200 rpm (Edition 30, Pirelli)
BYD *1

*1 these versions have stronger pistons pins and new rings, reinforced connecting rods, new bearings, reinforced cylinder block at the main-bearing pedestals and cap, new, lightweight aluminium-silicon alloy cylinder head for high temperature resistance and strength, adjusted exhaust camshaft timing, increased cross-section high-pressure injectors, 1.2 bar boost pressure turbocharger with larger turbine and compression rotor.

The only thing I would question there is the boost pressure.  I don't think BYDs run 1.2 bar.  Closer to 0.9 - 1 bar.

The BYD run with 1.2 bar of peak boost and 0,9 bar of stable boost on stock file.
