Fault code / charcoal canister / purge valve
« on: September 19, 2018, 03:54:36 pm »
Hi, had an on gojng issue with loss of power turbo not kicking in etc. Anyway I bought vag scanner and it showed up a fault. It was a 01089 code and apparently it's related to the charcoal canister / purge valve.
I rang the vw dealer Mansfield for prices as they seem straight forward to fit. He gave a price of £88 for the canister, £35 for the breather pipe - wtf!!!! and said he couldn't find the purge valve. He asked a mechanic passing by who said it is part of the canister and not a separate part!!!! Err no, it is a separate part you numpty.
My question is where can I buy these parts other than the stealers? Could these things be the power loss issues? Noticed some on eBay from Hong Kong lol.

have you ever tried buying from a TPS? I hear some stick firmtly to the no selling to public rule, but my local one has never had issue with me phoning orders through for collection.

This code can also be caused by the purge valve (N80) i think. This is a bit of a rip i believe (~£35) but Bosch non-vw branded ones aren't too pricey.

Might be useful:

I got a new bosch n75 for £23 from ebay. It tens minutes max to fit. You can get a creation motorsports silicone pipe for £25 which may prove durable than the OE one.

I use TPS in Manchester all the time and they know I'm not trade.

Have you tried clearing the code and seeing it goes and stays away?

Just take the engine cover off, if you have one, and you can see the valve about six inches behind the crash bar right in the middle of the car. Cut the hose clamps off, pull hoses off, fit new value and either crimp on new hose clamps or tighten jubilee clips.

N75 is boost pressure control nothing to do with evap system!

N80 is the purge valve. (N115 mentioned in previous post incorrect - ill edit!)

Ignore it.. mine had both canister and purge n80.fault code. I replaced both of them and cleared the code with my Vag-com and guess what, the fault code came back. Didn't notice any difference in performance at all.

Charcoal canister is about the right price from the dealer. Takes a couple of minutes to fit, that's all. I gave up on mine recently and swapped it. the light would come on once every few tanks, then, after a few clear runs go away again. Swapped it out and lights out and stayed out. No performance advantage but nice to have eliminated the problem.

Appreciate the issue is moving on but just adding in case anyone really is looking at the charcoal canister as a problem.

Its could be as simple as a blockage in one of the little pipes. You can test and rule out the charcoal cannister before buying a new one.

Hell, you can do what I've done and just vent to atmosphere, if you do it a certain way you get no EML and runs perfectly

Well had the Charcoal canister and pipe changed at Sunset Derby £158. It's made no difference. He said it pulls strongly so maybe it's just me? I think us Gti ers are more in tune  with our cars though as a lot of VW specialists are just used to seeing non gti models day in , day out? I liken  it to medical stuff. You know your own body best and know when something is not right even though they are telling you it is fine lol. Well I cant afford anymore money on this issue so calling it a day and just accepting it. Going to have it remapped at some point so maybe that might sort it?
Cheers
