Steering noise
« on: October 15, 2018, 04:50:51 pm »
Hi guys,
I've only had my GTI a few months, but I'm noticing a noise coming from the steering column when I turn the wheel. It's kind of like a very soft "dun dun dun" kind of noise - actually more of a sensation through the wheel than a noise. It's directly proportional to the speed at which I turn the wheel. Definitely not a CV joint noise - FAR more subtle and happens when stationary.
It seems to only happen when the car is cold and I can only notice it when stationary or at low speed.

Any ideas? I'm hoping someone else has experienced this and knows what it is. Could it be some sort of binding in the steering column or an issue with the power steering?

Thanks in advance

Probably your steering rack, pretty common issue (mine does it too)

There's lots of info on here regarding fitting the newer generation3 rack, which is supposed to be better

Thanks Neil. Is it anything to worry about from a safety standpoint?

No it's fine.  It's still a direct mechanical connection to the tie rods like old school steering racks.  You just have a motor for assistance instead of a hydraulic pump.
