Where to begin? Leon Fr Issues
« on: December 05, 2018, 08:18:15 PM »
Hi all,

I've had issues in the past with the alarm going off and now pretty much permanently have the door open light on the dash.. Coupled with this, the car has felt slow to rev (and for revs to drop back down) though it has sat around a lot over the past 12 months.

I've always been curious about the timing as I had to have the head rebuilt and a camshaft replaced after the camshaft sprocket cracked and put the timing out but interestingly I ran a log then clear all fault codes, took it out for 10 or so miles then took another log, the camshaft error only appeared in the second log?

I'm a bit perplexed as to what to do (or even if it's worth doing at all!) - Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Here's the rather lengthy log (the few non-errors have been removed to fit in the character limit):

p.s. the alarm fuse has been removed which might be causing one (or two if I'm lucky)

You've got a bunch o' issues there!

Camshaft - under the engine cover, disconnect the N205 VVT solenoid control valve.   Start the car up with VCDS hooked up and monitor measuring block 93.  This is the cam phase angle, which in English means information the ECU needs in order to inject fuel precisely at the right time.  You need to see between 0KW and -3KW.  If it's a larger number, the fault code is correct - the timing is out a tooth.  Very common problem.  Some mechanics seem to struggle with engine timing......they have one job to do.....lol   The timing could be out on the cambelt, or the chain, so both need to be checked.

Numerous electric gremlins - Sounds to me like you have a broken wire or two in a door harness, possibly the driver's door, or the rear one as it hints at.

Alarm - Common one that.  Replacing the siren module usually sorts that.

Slow revs and lack of power - More than likely a failed front PCV valve, which again is common.

Definitely worth bothering with mate.  None of that is particularly challenging but the alarm module (from VAG) isn't cheap and labour to restore the cam timing won't be cheap either, but it's certainly not worth putting the car in the bin over  :happy2:

Black Edition 30 with manually selected cogs, a beefier clutch, some extra boost and them Whiteline thingies, otherwise standard.

Cheers chap, I'll have a play this weekend.

The car is the wifes car really but was originally mine so I have a soft spot for it. Plus, she drove my F31 330d at the weekend and has really taken to it - I can't have her stealing another car from me!

Many Thanks,

Joe

I'm not surprised she took a liking to your BMW!

Good luck with the fault finding!
