as some of you guys might know i sprayed the engine cover red using multi layers of primer and what i thought was the right paint..

a few months later it has bubbled up and the paint looks shizen
ive removed it and by slightly bending the cover ,all the paint has cracked and is able to be peeled off.
i would like to re do it.
has anyone any ideas what went wrong..... other than fact i did it

or tips for a better result, or just pay for a specialist to re do it... and how much do ya reckon for that?

Dunno if this is the reason, but my engine cover has got so hot that there are actually burn marks on it (just slightly darkened patches). I've noticed this on a few other pictures of other peoples' engine covers also. So, I suspect that the heat has just done this to the paint.

Is there heat resistant paint available to buy? I have no idea......

What about a brake caliper paint? I believe they come in spray form as well as tinned and you can get red. I know its designed for metal but surely if you used a plastic primer first it should cover it ok and it should cope with a descent temperature?

High temp paint is what you need, comes in most of the base colours

dammit mr mac why do you do that!!!. there ya go again,spending my money on yet more fab ideas..... am gonna get the new rear end and badge carbon wrapped so why not this...... dammit!!!

so will it hold up to the heat?

Its cheap enough to at least try, ive ran out to do my own attempt.

need a plastic etching primer , and prep the plastic first to remove all excess oils etc. before you even attempt a top coat

smoothrite, I would suggest isnt suitable either (besides not a good enough finish for a cover)
vinyl with the underbonnet heat just isnt viable either.

Im gonna try a test peice on my Engine cover to see it dis-colours. I dont think it gets hot enough on top of the engine cover to cause that problem.Im gonna test it on the black side sections of the cover rather then the chrome effect centre section.

But as no one has had a go, ill report back with my findings laters.

A lot of guys across the pond have 'cosmetically' modded their engine and battery covers and haven't reported problems AFAIK.
