Tornado 05 GTI Red Rocket
« on: August 25, 2014, 10:04:17 pm »
Introduced myself on the forum the other day, and said I would put up some pictures.
Been looking for at getting one of these since I passed my test, but insurance and money would never allow it until now, after looking at several examples, some early, some late models, I settled on this 05 model. (Good price and not worth paying the extra thousands for a later one when this is in such good condition!)

Haven't had much time or good weather to take any pics of it since I've had it, so here is one from the dealers site!!

The dealer/trader had the wheels refurbed and painted that colour which I think suits the car nicely, not a fan of aftermarket wheels, but I think this is just enough!! The paintwork is in very good condition for a nearly 10 year old car -I know it looks pink in those pictures, but it is just the light- No dents or major stonechips.

It has been well looked after, but still wanted to give it a proper service/going over.
So I ordered all this lot

New Mats
Thermostat (Doesn't heat up as quick or as high as I'd like)
Diverter Valve (Nothing wrong with mine I don't think, just a precaution)
Oil and air filters
New oil
New coolant (for the thermostat change)
Spark plugs
New keyfob emblems
Double din stereo fascia/kit (Have a pioneer Bluetooth/DVD/iPod out of my old car)

Will try and complete the service next weekend! Need opinions on the aux kit for factory head unit, as I have began to like the standard setup and am having doubts over fitting my own!

Also.... Is it normal for the exhaust to be quite throaty as standard? Its not overly loud, just at certain points in the rev range it rasps and coming off throttle it pops slightly. No flames or anything though!!

These turned up today, didn't cost much at all, and will add a bit to the interior.

This is the head unit that I had in my old car, I'm not sure whether to fit it yet or keep the standard one with maybe an ipod connector?

All the lights on there change colour and shade, so I can match it up nicely with the standard light colours if I decide to fit it.

I like it in red, my mk4 Golf was also Tornado Red and that polished up really nice. Had a black car after that and was a pain to keep clean, always looked dirty and scratched!!

So did my 'big service' today, took ages getting to the thermostat!
All done now though. Filters, thermostat, oil, HPFP cam follower, diverter valve, spark plugs and new coolant.
Sounds so much quieter on idle now than it did before, not sure if that's down to the oil change or the cam follower though.

The oil that came out was very black, seemed like it hadn't been done in a while.

Here are pics of the Cam follower and Diverter valve that I removed - Nowhere near as bad as some of the examples I've seen on here, but cant be ideal surely!

Just need to take it for a drive now to get my warning lights to go out!

Yes, it feels like a different car.
I've only had it a week or so because I have been away with work, and I wouldn't have said it was slow. But now it feels so much more responsive and smoother. It also gets up to temperature quickly too and stays there. So a decent bit of work!

Gave it a clean after, not really into the whole detailing side of things, just a good wash and quick polish works for me!

Before that though, had a couple of bits to do.....

Remove this sticker

Fit my bottle opener and test it as a cup holder

And nice and clean....

Looks good.
You'd be shocked at the difference a professional polish makes...takes years off the car. I had my red one done recently and it makes a huge difference.

If you start detailing you will probably get addicted...
