Title: Front wing replacement
Post by: DBXdarkangel on February 05, 2019, 09:30:39 pm
Hey guy. So I was parked in a public road on Sunday when 2 homeless guys started fighting and ended up getting pushed into the nsf wing. They managed to dent the wing on the wheel arch. I've had it into a body repair centre today and was told it would cost £589 incl vat to repair. I'm guessing that's to knock out the dent and fill and blow in.
My question is should I just replace the whole wing myself as there just bolt on and seems easy looking at a YouTube video. Or go via my insurance and have it filled and painted in?
A fully painted wing on eBay only costs £98 pound.

Tbh it sounds like the body shop are completely taking the p1ss.

I'd get it done without going through insurance as you will get stung come renewal time.
Get some more quotes as that's a stupid price or go down the Ebay route, if you do buy one of those would like to know what they're like finish and fit wise....  :happy2:

at the price of that quote.. I personally would buy a new wing and unbolt - bolt it on!

my mates just brought the aftermarket new painted ebay ones.. they'll be arriving soon.. and i'm giving him a hand fitting them! from the reviews we read.. some people said they are not as good as the original (as in quality) which is to expected! but they are stunning and a perfect replacement! someone else said they don't fit well, where as another said they fit lovely! so whether that's down to the DIYer's doing or not I'm not sure.

for £100 i'd go down this route though.. unless you can get a lot cheaper quotes elsewhere.. but seriously don't pay over £500+

Reply back here if you could and let me know how you get on. I'm tempted to knock my.small dent out as it's not cracked the paint or scuffed at all.

yeah sure, I'll give you my own opinion on them ;-) its something i'll be looking at doing on mine too eventually.. so he's being the guinea pig for me

It's worth a try knocking it out, "you can't break what's broken" right

It's hardly anything on mine. I'm surprised how weak and flimsy the metal is

It's more annoying as it was 2 homeless drunks fighting and no cctv. My dash cam got there faces but not actually hitting the car so police would do anything. Not to mention as I know every inch if the car, It's more noticeable to me as I know it's there lol

gutting times mate.. police don't do much these days anyway unfortunately. I know what you mean by knowing every inch.. that's the worst part - having something out of place!

Just had a quote of £150 to do the dent with paintless dent removal. Will report back on Thursday next week when he's done it.

That was a good shout about getting a dent man in, don't know why I didn't suggest that as I had one in a while ago to do mine  :signLOL:
Anyhow it's hard to see how much damage there is from your rainy pics but hope it goes ok. Is that price just knocking them out or some paint too?

It's just for knocking it out. To be fair I thick he will use the hot glue method and pulled.

Who the hell are the paint shop? Dick Turpin & Sons??
Even the PDR guy seems steep. Our local DentMaster guy is £80 but usually works out at £120 for several dents if you have any shopping trolley scars. 3 of us at work all needed stuff, if you have mates in need of their services too it makes their rate cheaper.
Good luck either way :happy2:

Our local PDR and best around our way is £40 a dent, it just depends on area and demand. I second the get a few people in on it though, generally gets you a very good discount for your work when you bring a lot.

My dad owns his own little repair paint shop in the North East and is really cheap compared to some robbing gits. It always makes me laugh how these paint shops come up with ridiculous prices. They totally take the p*ss. He probably would have charged about £100-150 for that job.

I used a guy called Dan who is "Pure Dents".  Charged me £50 I think to come and take a dent out, I had him look at another 4 or 5 small parking dings while he ws there (expecting him to charge me per dent) and the he still only asked for £50! I made him take a healthy tip!

This is Leeds/Bradford for reference

its mad to think that some garages just don't think about the customers pocket and will pull all the notes you have for something that wouldn't cost that at all!

me and my mate fitted the ebay front wings Saturday.. so my opinion/review:

colour match is pretty much spot on (LC9Z) and I couldn't tell the difference. as for fitment.. the job itself is easy enough, but as for the actual fitment of the wings.. the passenger side is absolutely perfect.. as in, you wouldn't know it wasn't original.. the quality, the shut lines the perfection of fit.. I was very surprised at the perfection! This wing had a label stuck on the inside saying TUV approved (insurance approved I think).

As for the drivers side wing: well.. I have to say I wasn't best pleased about this one (although its not my car, its my opinion) shut lines fit perfectly against the door, front bumper and front half of the bonnet line.. but the mounting bracket at the top left corner near the mirror where it bolts near the window screen, it was extended too far so it lined up for the nut to be bolted, but the extension of the bracket pushed the wing out near the pillar line and top half of the bonnet line.. as in almost by 1cm higher and further out than it should have been! and there was no way of bending the bracket, its like it would of needed cutting down and welding up!

we was at the point of no return as his original wings was totally rusted, so we continued the fit and my mate just bent the wing in up top to blend better, looks alright to be fair but that 10% of extra precision from the manufacturer would of made us a lot more happier with the overall job! (this wing didn't have the label TUV approved. so wondering if the company sourced this wing elsewhere or whether it was pot luck to have 1 perfect and 1 that 10% not so perfect.

anyhow, that's my review on the ebay wings.. if you're wings are totally buggered this is not a bad route to go down! In note to your post though, I would be happy you paid little money to keep the original wings, and came out with a perfection job, and saved the hassle :)

Thanks for the reply on fitting none genuine wings. Shame the drivers side didn't fit as snug as the passenger side as I'm sure the cars owner will notice it more knowing it's not 100%. I know I did with the wing :(
It's a shame the wing sellers arnt more local so u can take them back if there not right. The seller I was considering was based in Scotland and I'm in Devon. Couldn't be anymore far apart lol.

you're welcome. I would suggest.. if it was me and you have the time and patience, plus you don't need the car: remove your wing, test fit the new wing and if the fit isn't great and you're not happy, put your wing back on and return it! ( I know that may sound a bit obvious, but if like my mate.. he had no chance of returning his)

I see you what you mean by the shut lines on the drivers side. I have the beginnings of bubbling but no rust break through at the moment. I did have one question though... how well made were the panels? The issue is panel thickness and longevity and I wonder whether I should just swallow the VW price and get it sprayed up by a local? Do VW do some sort of electrostatic zinc dipping with a base coat of primer whereas pattern parts are just sprayed primer?

I would prefer to get decent quality even though its more expensive.

100% if you can afford it.. then always buy the best! as a cheaper alternative.. I would say the Ebay wings are a great purchase. so long as you don't end up with a dodgy fitment (like my mates drivers side) but you can see the alignment issue I was talking about. it was all down to the mounting bracket up the top. shame.. but his wings was so bad hes more than happy now lol.

I would say, there wasn't much thickness difference in it.. I mean you'll never get VW quality from some cheap ebay seller but the quality was pretty good IMO. It was only the fitment of 1 wing which was disappointing.

if the rust isn't breaking through bad at all, maybe see if you can have a repair-rust repellent-spray done and see how long that lasts you. otherwise  you could order the new wings, have them sprayed and be done with it once and for all for the rest of your ownership. You just don't want to pay twice for the repair if you know what I mean. so get prices and weigh up the pros and cons.
