Future plans include the following (in no particular order)

Full TBE (inc 200cell cat) - almost certainly a Powervalve BCS unit after previous poor Milly experience
HPFP - LOBA is my preferred model

I fancy a set of 18'' ROTA Grids
A little paintwork - stonechips need sorting and maybe a bit of colour coding!

Still amazed how much you got this for esp. with those mint seats.

For me, my first jobs would include:

Interior Chrome Pack / Dark Hazard.
Leather Arm Rest
Colour code the rear valence and side skirts
R32 Clusters

All on the cards it would seem

Car looks great for that much mileage  :surprised:

Those seats orignal spec or added later? they look brand new

Do you have any links to the Chrome Pack/Dark Hazard?
Arm rest would be lovely too!
Colour code and R32 clusters in the pipeline!

Seats were a factory fitted option - think they were a £2500 option! And you are right - they look brand new!

Here is a couple of pics of my old GTI!
Wonder if it is still knocking about!

Got my Chrome pack from China eBay, all VW part numbers, coupled with the A/C dial surrounds and Dark Hazard it sets off the interior nicely.

Chrome Pack
They aren't expensive either: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Set-of-5pics-CHROME-SWITCH-CONTROL-fit-for-VW-PASSAT-B6-CC-GOLF-JETTA-MK5-MK6-/201114948199?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2ed3629267
You'd need the 3 door version though.

Hazard
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OEM-Dark-Red-HAZARD-SWITCH-FOR-VW-Volkswagen-Golf-Jetta-MK5-Sagitar-18G953509-/201142852135?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2ed50c5a27

Think they do the A/C surrounds too... infact they do a lot of cool Mk5 stuff, like the RCD510, Gateways, looms etc.

Great purchase  :happy2: obviously well looked after.

Why why why did you fit a Forge DV spacer though?  sounds chavvy and leaks boost. . .

Yep - you are correct but although it pains me to admit it, when combined with the twintake and a decent exhaust note it just makes me smile! I am not there yet!
I know its a bit much but even though i am 36 it makes me chuckle to hear the tish of the spacer.
Not to everyones taste but hey I like it

Those seats fetch nearly 2/3 of the price you paid for the whole car! Plus those Xenons, MFSW and high line clock, you could sell those and be in profit. What a find! :happy2:

Nope not through the trade - previous owner only advertised it on my campervan forum very briefly before I sent him a deposit!
Even he commented that he was surprised it sold so fast - dont think he knew what it could have fetched!
But hey - I am a VW enthusiast so it will get some love and mods rather than being stripped for parts!

A mate of mine popped over today and he gave me a Forge Short shift kit and some fresh bushes!  :happy2:
Just fitted it on the car and it has transformed the gear change! Very happy!
All for the price of a beer!

Some billet aluminum rings for the climate panel arrived from Awesome GTI too - so they have also been slipped on to lift the interior slightly!

Pics of the cam follower when they pop it out mate!

Still can't get over what a bargain your car was. Not many of us on here buy a car knowing you could sell it the next day for a profit (or at least break it for a profit)

Will be keeping an eye on this BT to see what you do with it  :happy2:

Awesome car - looks like it has been well cared for as I'd never guess it had done those miles!
Great price you paid for the spec - would love to find one like it for that money!

Look forward to how your build progresses!

Got the car back from the garage today after all the work!
Cambelt, Water-pump, Replacement Engine Mount, Major Service, New Cam follower, Eibach Sportline Springs inc fitment and 4xwheel alignment
Well what can I say - the handling is transformed with the new springs and the engine is purring!

Big thanks to Lincoln VW Specialists - very happy with their service!  :happy2:
And they are a REVO dealer so I will be back at some point when the coffers aren't so dry :signLOL:

Little bit lower, less roll, still supple and compliant over the poor surfaces found on Lincolnshire's roads!
The garage commented on the fantastic condition of the vehicle considering the mileage - a testament to the PO

Some pics for you peeps
New springs with the original ones retained in case I want to return to standard in the future

Had the Cam Follower replaced on everyones advice - it didnt look too bad to my untrained eyes considering it has covered 167700 miles

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fsdfordyce1978%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_1136_zps5063e902.jpg&hash=c7be82aaca6587b160dd27c6351b7613b43a9d6b)

Overall - an expensive day all things considered but I need to get the ground work completed before I begin increasing the output of the motor.
Nice that no nasties were uncovered and confident now to look ahead to 2+ power, R32 Brakes and so on!  :happy2:

Looks so much better lowered! How do you find the ride quality?
Title: Re: StuF presents Candy White 3 Door GTI - Bargain Buy of the Year!
Post by: StuF on November 04, 2014, 06:36:55 pm
Find the ride brilliant although I have only covered a few miles - since collecting I have
Taken the car around some fast smooth sections on an airfield with a significant reduction in body roll and very confidence inspiring at speed
Over some terrible condition patchwork roads that really need resurfacing - no bumps, crashes or real difference from standard
Across a few speed bumps - nothing of note to worry about compared to the OG springs, slightly firmer return after clearing bump
And finally along some nice fast country lanes with varied camber and condition - again confidence is great, takes the bumps and lumps brilliantly

Big test will be a journey with the wife onboard and see if she notices!!  :signLOL:

I can't get over how tidy this car is for its milage and what you paid! If you had posted it had done 67k rather than 167k I'd probably believe you based on the pictures, the previous owner obviously took exceptionally good care of it!

Decided as there was a half hour break in the torrential rain to alter a few bits on the car - I am liking the contrast between the white and black so am going with that theme for the time being.
I have replaced the rear badge with a fresh one - the old one was a little pitted and worn

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fsdfordyce1978%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_1145_zpsaa42f8a8.jpg&hash=448ee6cdfe5d1c58618777ec38adeb52d56c72f6)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fsdfordyce1978%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_1147_zpsb2b97ff4.jpg&hash=d6081cc23b7985b6ebd7430a494de161fe8f8ed2)

Whilst at the rear I fitted some CF stickers in the rear badge

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fsdfordyce1978%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_1146_zps71bb6c9e.jpg&hash=feefb089d504f875548bfe55eac6b8fba32254c1)

And then at the front I have removed the standard GTI badge and fitted a Black one!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fsdfordyce1978%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_1148_zpsf8775fc6.jpg&hash=d08e3de38e87abe9b2224e691fde2349fdb134e1)

Its the little tweaks that keep me happy!  :happy2:

I like your theme choice. You should check this out;

http://store.blackforestindustries.com/bficcacroils.html

Not so much the product itself but looking down the page there's 2 shots of the engine bay which has the same white and black theme you're going for, looks really neat and think it'd look right at home in your GTI.

Up bright and early this morning so decided to replace the hazard switch with a cherry red one!
Also took a pic of the B pillars I wrapped in Carbon Fibre effect vinyl

Today got the Xenons re-levelled after installing the Eibach's - they were too low and I couldnt adjust them without VCDS!
All work carried out gratis thanks to Lincs VW Specialists!  :happy2:

My Stainless Steel Tipped switches arrived today too so they have been installed - was an easy job although I did manage to destroy all the standard switches removing them  :ashamed:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fsdfordyce1978%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_1157_zps42dd8acd.jpg&hash=bae1fd6871e69c60ed80fd689cbcbfb0d90fe682)

Job for tomorrow is to remove the wheels and spray them up with PlastiDip Matte Black Paint! More pics to follow tomorrow  :happy2:

Some nice mods there.

I'm amazed with the plastidip (not sure if you've used it before)... did mine about 18 months ago and the rear two have had new tyres fitted and the plastidip is still on and pretty much perfect.  I kerbed the other two, so need to touch them up.

My process was to get the wheels super clean (Brake cleaner spray is good), dried and finished... I used a fine first coat, and then just kept loading it up once each layer was dry it's really easy to use... I used about a can a wheel.

My advice would be to get the cans warm in this weather... I placed mine in a tub of warmish (but not boiling) water and the spray mist is far, far better... when they're cold they spit.

Dark wheels on a white car is one of my favs... there's a glossifier now too, but I haven't used it.

Cheers @Scottymon (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=7640) that is exactly my plan - have 4 tins (1 per wheel) and a heater in the garage to keep things civilized.
Going to attempt to do 2 wheels at a time so jacking the car up is easier!

Cans will be sat in a lovely hot bath of water to prevent them spitting - actually really looking forward to getting them done!
Weather was too grim today to attempt it!

Will take loads of pics tomorrow  :happy2:

Well today I made a start on Plasti Dipping the wheels - unfortunately because I decided to run a half marathon this morning I only managed to get two of the four done!

Was remarkably easy to do and would recommend this product to anyone! I should get it finished tomorrow and transform the look of the car

Here are the pics of progress so far

PlastiDip Cans from eBay

Front wheel removed and washed - its not in a brilliant state and needs a refurb but I dont have the £300+ required at the moment!

I used a heatgun and a pan of boiling water on the paint as the ambient temp is pretty low here in Lincoln

Looks good. Don't you need to sand and prep the alloy face before using it? Also, why use PlastiDip over normal paint? I'm just curious...
Title: Re: StuF presents Candy White 3 Door GTI - Bargain Buy of the Year!
Post by: StuF on November 16, 2014, 05:26:16 pm
Nope - no prep required, plastidip dries as a rubberised paint layer that can simply be peeled off when it is no longer required.
Can be used on almost anything and comes in a variety of colours - everything from black to bright orange!
I guess normal paint would require prep, primer and so on!

Suitable on engine parts? Does look smart and it's the alloy wheel equivalent of a vinyl wrap.

Afternoon fellas - between trips to the post office and dodging the rain I have managed to get the wheels done on the car! I am very happy with the finish I achieved especially as I am a rank amateur when it comes to painting/spraying anything!

Even managed to give the car a quick rinse inbetween showers

Will keep an eye on how the finish lasts but have a little left in one of the cans incase touch ups are required! Overall a result for me!

Loving the candy white (not that I'm biased of course!) you've got yourself a cracking bargain.
I like the idea of plastidip on the alloys it gives them a new lease of life for not much money.
Have you thought of colour coding the skirts & bumpers? Its transformed the look on mine. I've kept the rear diffuser & the middle of the front splitter black though. Along with my gloss black Monza's it looks pretty trick (even if I do say so myself!)

Got a can of smoke plastidip to do my taillights but was hesitant in the end because I was worried about how they would stand up to washing and stone chips.

Be interested to see how they hold up! Let me know!

Small update - today I finished installing the leather armrest and new cup holder that I kindly received from @DamoP (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2936)
Cracking kit and great quality - really lifts the interior, just need to find a cubby box to fit inside the actual armrest

Nice job, did you have to loosen the handbrake mounting bolts?
What make rubber mats you got in the back, like the raised lip to hold water/snow in.

Hi Paul,

Nope didnt need to loosen and of the handbrake mounting bolts although I could have quite happily removed the gearknob and linkage if possible to replace the cupholder! :signLOL:

As far as I know the front and rear mats are standard VW issue - although I am pretty sure nobody has ever sat in the back of the car before me today as they were totally unmarked!

I would allocate a couple of hours to swap the whole lot out including new cupholder
Damo's guide was very useful however I cannot stress how much you need to use a "stubby" torx driver
Some of the screws are upside down in weird locations that are impossible to get to!

Saying that if I managed to do it with my shovel hands anyone should manage it!

The wingback seats really are very good - I am fairly tall at 6ft4 and about 13.5stone so are supportive and comfy for my frame. The heating in them is excellent too.
One of the reasons I purchased the car was that it came with them so I am pleased they are comfy

Sean,

I used 4 tins of paint - 1 per wheel and several thin coats, can't remember how many but did use a heat gun between applications until the paint went matte

The finish is very robust and I am very happy with it

No tips really buddy, I just cleaned my wheels, covered the tyres and cracked on in the garage. I would jack your car up and do two wheels one day, let them dry over night and do the other two the day after.

Honestly it's easy stuff to use and very forgiving - wish I was brave enough to go for a more lairy colour scheme!

A new plastidip shop opened near me so I went in to get some smoke spray to do my rear lights and got chatting to the owner.

He told me a girl called in with a beat up old clio with steel wheels and bought neon green and neon pink spray.
She sprayed her steel wheels neon pink and the hub caps neon green and went on her merry way  :driver:

He did actually have one useful tip. He told me the guys doing the Cannonball run came in with their flash cars and bought cans of the clear plastidip. They sprayed their bonnets to prevent stone chips and when they finished they just peeled it off. Good idea!

Small update - today I decided to finish fitting the upgraded xenon bulbs
I bought a pair of Osram D2S Xenarc 4300k from eBay to replace the standard Philips items.

The drivers side bulb was replaced no bother however I couldn't get the passenger side unit to unclip so I read up and decided to remove the whole light unit.

Was pretty straightforward and all sorted now. Hoping for an improved light output now.

Hi Stuf,
Think the gti is looking the dogs m8. Had you fitted the eibach sport line springs when you posted the photos under the list of mods? I have recently bought a 56 reg black gti but needs dropping and thought the drop on yours looked the exact look I was after. Are the springs fitted to standard shocks and would you say the ride height is good for everyday use ... Including speed bumps and petrol four court gulleys? Is the ride bearable or too crashy?
Cheers for any advice in advance

Hi buddy,
Thanks for the kind words - the pics on page 3 show the golf after the Eibach springs were fitted, the ones on the first page show the car on the standard springs
After around 2k miles on the springs which are fitted to the standard shocks the ride is still brilliant - no appreciable difference from stock to be honest, however it handles like its on rails.
Have several speed bumps on my way to work which it takes with ease, its my daily so gets driven in all weathers/conditions and I cant fault the springs.

Will be tipping over to 170,000 miles in the near future and feels tight as a drum!

I have noticed the difference - have driven a few 100 miles in poor weather since installing the fresh xenon bulbs, the light output feels crisper and more defined with a brighter whiter light than before. My old philips bulbs were ok but had seen many many hours of use so wanted to get a fresh set in.

Haha - thats the plan, 200k+ on (mostly) original parts!
I know it is still running happily on its factory DMF, Clutch, Dampers, Wheels,Intercooler and so on!
Did nearly 500 miles last week without using a mm of oil although the same cannot be said for windscreen washer fluid!

Was planning performance mods however am moving towards improving the tunes/satnav to a RNS including reverse camera and updated climate panel
Feel the 200bhp is adequate at the moment although maybe thats my age! Turning 37 this year!

Would be interesting to see how she performs on a Dyno run

Dyno run could be interesting - wonder how many horses have departed the stable over the last 170,000 miles  :signLOL:

I recently remembered I had a set of standard lights buried away at the back of my garage so dug them out and decided to see if I could do a reasonable job on converting them into ED30/R32 rears.
We are saving hard for our 10 year wedding anni trip to Sri Lanka so cant go spending £150+ on a real set  :ashamed:
Off to eBay I went and purchased some cheap tinting spray - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351198040901?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Retrieved my old lights from the depths of the garage, cleaned them then masked them up ready for a play

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fsdfordyce1978%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_1310_zps6c93c91f.jpg&hash=37eb5b5433b1024d6a228f845b9adbb726fe9baf)

I managed to blag a couple of hours free at work today to do a bit of painting, so two light coats of the tint were applied over 2/3 hours, didnt want to go too dark and at the end of the day I finished with two further applications of clear gloss effect lacquer.

End results can be seen below

I am quite pleased with the effect although I dont know how long the tint will last - but hey if it looks pants after a while I can refit my standard lights and have another go!  :happy2:
Also the wifelet is happy as I have done it without spending much cash!

I was going to do the exact same so I tried it out with smoke plasti dip on a spare light and it turned out great.

I didn't follow through because I questioned its durability. Would that paint coating hold up to stone chips and constant washing I wonder.

What clear lacquer did you use? Did you just lacquer the sprayed bit or did you do the whole light?
Title: Re: StuF presents Candy White 3 Door GTI - Bargain Buy of the Year!

Not sure how durable it will be to be honest but wouldn't be a massive chore if it lasts a couple of months and then reapply.
I just used a clear lacquer - like this sort of stuff

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Clear-Lacquer-Spray-500ml-Quality-Clear-Coat-Gloss-PROFESSIONAL-QUALITY-/251651860862?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3a979ea97e

I applied it over the whole light once I had removed the masking tape, let me have a uniform finish across the lens.
For the cost of doing it I don't mind if it gets a bit worn - even the plasticoated wheels are doing fine with not a single issue so far, in particular I have had a tyre removed and refitted without damaging the finish!

So to sum up the whole process was -
Clean lenses with soapy water and dry
Mask of centre areas with tape
Spray light coats of tint to achieve desired colour +2hrs between coats (probably less in summer)
Remove masking tape
Two light coats of clear lacquer across whole lens surface +2hrs between each
Check finish and install

I'm off next week so I think I'll give it a go. How many bottles of smoke spray did you need? I assume the one can is more than enough?

Hi Stuf,
Yeah love the eibach drop, which springs did you go for in the end was it the 25mm front and 20mm back sportline sure I have seen somewhere 40mm front and 35mm back. Did you fit the springs to the original shocks? I'm not sure to get the shocks as well while I'm on as have heard the original shocks dont last that long once lowered!!

Marticroft

My shocks are the original ones and have nearly covered 170k - all without any issues so far, no leaks or problems.
I suppose it depends on how hard a life they have had.
As for which springs I went for they were these

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fsdfordyce1978%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_1132_zps794923e5.jpg&hash=318e7f40c7e6c9d286db1d24ce23bdbf6442e9ff)

If the shocks start to fail or the ride gets a bit ragged over the next few 1000 miles I will probably replace them with another set of standard items

Cheers for the offer @GrayMK5GTI (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2907)  - will let you know if anything is mentioned in the MOT ref the state of my shocks!

I have had an interesting week - the wife had enough of me mooning at RNS510 headunits on eBay and she ordered me one as a surprise!
Apologies to the guys that offered me options on theirs - it was a total shock when the parcel arrived from Eastern Europe.
I am now the proud owner of a RNS510 Version R LED SSD headunit with 2015 Maps and the most recent firmware!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fsdfordyce1978%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_1332_zpswyws7vjk.jpg&hash=170f5f62829e0b563575b7a99a8ef6ebb2b00bab)

Whilst removing the RCD500 unit I decided to have a go at wrapping the dash components in Carbon Fibre vinyl - its not a flawless result but I am happy with how it turned out considering my art and craft skills are poor!!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fsdfordyce1978%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_1339_zpskkd0h6fs.jpg&hash=36e58d34dd73431e4b57d5eb801418d041633ffb)

After installing the headunit a mate of mine had to work some magic with VCDS to get it to display the NAV correctly on the MFD however it still needs a bit of fettling to work correctly with my Dension Pro BT unit which is currently unplugged - it kept making the highline display flicker and wasnt showing NAV directions with it plugged in. Should be sorted tomorrow though as I think it is a canbus coding issue.

After treating the car to a shiny new headunit it decided to let me down on the way to work yesterday quite spectacularly - ended up with a seized caliper on the front passenger side wheel! Car was dragging and seemed low on power so I tried to drive faster, only realised it was the brake when I stopped at traffic lights and smoke started billowing from the wheel arch! I pulled over and let it cool down! The wheel was very very hot and the brakes wernt far off melting.

After half an hour cool down I decided to limp slowly in rush hour traffic to the nearest garage - I didnt have any tools onboard!
Kwik Fit it was!!!! And fair play to them, they showed me the seized caliper, the pad and disk were ok and £140 later I was rolling!!

I now have 3xRed calipers and 1xsilver!! Have some high temp red paint on order to rectify the issue!!

Overall an eventful week!

Cheers Batfink - the plastidip paint is very robust stuff!

Today I decided to install a shiny stainless steel ashtray instead of the open cubby that was there before.
The car has never been and never will be smoked in however I wanted a bit more bling so in came my eBay bargain!

As it was with the open cubby and 12v supply

I have also transferred the 12v power supply across from the old one so I can still charge the phone and so on!
Easy and quick mod that adds a little more the interior  :happy2:

Well today despite the rain and generally foul weather I decided to fit my smooth front end.
I have spent the week carefully attaching Neodymium magnets to the rear of the grille and metal plate
Now that it is all dried and solid I cracked on and installed it.

Before pics with my old front end and plate with holder

It should improve your shifting. Good addition but when I searched it, it wasn't cheap. You probably got it for a great price.

Took me 20mins to swap out the shifter for a shiny new one

For comparison - old plastic one vs new metal one

Have a lovely tight action now

Well today despite the rain and generally foul weather I decided to fit my smooth front end.
I have spent the week carefully attaching Neodymium magnets to the rear of the grille and metal plate
Now that it is all dried and solid I cracked on and installed it.

Before pics with my old front end and plate with holder

New US style smooth grille with magnets stuck on the inside edge

Shame it isn't just the grille

True - but to be honest I would have paid £75 just for the grill so I considered the other bits to be an added bonus

Today the car was treated to a wash and polish with an interior valet and leather clean - came up like new!

Hi Stu,

Enjoyed reading your thread. I am a UK citizen living in Canada and looking at a GTI it has done the same amount of miles as yours with excellent history up to 20000/1 year ago. Any tips on what to look at?
Thanks

Steve,

Best advice really is the overall condition of the vehicle. Check for service history and evidence it has been cherished by the previous owner - receipts for all the work and so on. Little things like the quality of the tyres reflect on the owner in my opinion - I was very fortunate with my car and its condition despite the huge mileage. I have since had it independently inspected for piece of mind and everything came back in the green. Maybe you could arrange to have one of these done to the vehicle you are looking at. Finally see if you can take a code reader to the viewing and check the ECU for any issues?
Good luck  :happy2:

Cheers for the encouragement - yep it is in great condition considering the mileage but it goes to show that motorway miles off turbo dont count as that makes up nearly 90% of the odometer reading!

After clocking 170k I had a nice parcel waiting for me when I got home from work

First impressions are very good - it is well made and everything fitted well

After hearing a screaming noise coming from under the bonnet this morning on the way to work, when backing off boost -  I sort of self diagnosed a failed PCV valve being the issue!
Was still on the one it came out of the factory with!

So I went online and found a replacement from GSF for £25 - result in my book!
Finished work early, collected the new valve and have just installed it - one of the easiest jobs I have done!

Some pics for those who may attempt the job in the future

New valve straight out of the package!

Slight update - dash camera installed and hard wired into an ignition live so always recording when I am enjoying Lincolnshires roads.
Decided to go for a Transcend 16GB DrivePro 200 from Amazon and am very impressed with the image and recording facilities.

Also today had the GTI mot'd and it sailed through no issues whatsoever! Happy days and another 13 months of motoring for me!

No worries mate - was easy to install

Switched live from fuse box, butchered the 12v plug and added a fused connector to a 12v switched ignition live
Fed the cable up through the headlining and down the air-bag pillar and into the fuse box

Will post some footage from the dash camera when I get round to it!

All those empty spaces you could have parked across and you swung in right next to a car  :signLOL:

Just had these fitted at work, by all accounts they are really good for the price, do you mind if I ask how you wired this into your car, seriously considering one of these.

hi mate,

loving the thread. just a quick question, on your highline clocks how did you get the oil temp etc to appear? is it just a case of cycling through the menu or do you have to do some coding?

Thanks

keep up the good work

Installation of the fiscon is easy - took me all of 15 mins!
Headunit out, piggyback the wiring, run the mic upto the light unit and refit headunit
Easy as that!

Just read through the entire thread. I really like the mods you have done, the lower half of the car along with the standard Black bumper works really well.

Had a break from playing with the Golf due to spending loads of time away in our 1970 EarlyBay Camper - been all over Europe and the UK over the summer having a ball
Happy to say the GTI is doing fine - still purring away happily and being driven hard (where appropriate)
Just ticked over 172500 miles and has just been washed, polished and waxed in some nice Bilt Hamber so trying to keep the car nice and clean

Treated it to a good wash and wax so should stay fresh in the crap weather
Got its annual service coming up soon with a brake fluid change so should have a nice clean bill of health for the winter!

Title: Re: StuF presents Candy White 3 Door GTI - New Boots!
Post by: StuF on April 01, 2016, 04:03:28 pm
Afternoon all  :happy2:

Been a busy week with the motor - checked the tyres on the car last weekend and noticed the fronts were a little past their best!!  :innocent:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fsdfordyce1978%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_2930_zpscouxzv7y.jpg&hash=6730444c0aecff509013d6ce848678c4cb03a432)

So I decided to order a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy 3's from F1 Autocentre here in Lincoln
Manged to get a set of 4 fitted and balanced for under £400 which I was happy with.

No real comments so far after a single day of driving other than its nice to be "legal" again  :signLOL:

Also passed another milestone on the way to work

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fsdfordyce1978%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_2978_zpsjwqsklgf.jpg&hash=d01fc25ca9dcea5570f2b77b3a1e61873b824963)

Almost 12 months to the day since I passed 170k and still going strong - so basically I managed 5k a year although that will be significantly reduced this year as I am heading off to the Falklands for 6months in Sept

Car needs a good wash and polish so will get some decent pics of the fresh rubber when its clean!

Mark - the front number plate is a little smaller than it should be, cant remember the exact size although it is an ebay special and held on with magnets
Do a search on ebay for short metal pressed plates and it should appear  :happy2:

Gave the car some love today
Nice wash and wax and took some pics
Not too shabby considering the mileage the old girl has covered

Snow foam as a pre wash then followed by some megs shampoo then onto a little wax

Looking good Stu.

It's a great spec you have there, I was holding out for something with a few more options, but in the end condition and history ruled out.

I asked you about your car a few weeks back on 'Early Bay'. I think you're totally right regarding the mileage, the condition is far more important. At least half of the 'low mileage' ones that were advertised had mileage discrepancies with the MOT database.

Cheers Phil - yep I was a bit naughty posting some pics of the mighty GTI on EarlyBay!
Gave the car a nice bath today as it has a nice new stablemate on the driveway.
We now have a full compliment of VW's on the drive!

White MK5 GTI
White 1970 EarlyBay
And a brand new White Touareg R-Line

After a day of working on the car and replacing the following items all is good again!  :drinking:

Low Pressure Fuel Sensor
CamShaft Sensor
Crankshaft Sensor

Full oil and filter change with Mobil 1

The first two sensors were easy to change - took me literally 5 mins to sort them however the crank sensor was buried deep in the engine and took ages to get to!
Dont want to have to do that again!

Oil change went well and the filter replacement was due - im good now for a few more thousand miles

Some pics of my work today!

Moved the bus out of the garage so I could work on a hard surface!

Just make sure it has been serviced regularly and not been abused

Now knocking on the door of 180k and still tight as a drum

Would post some pics however photobucket is holding my pics to ransom and im refusing to pay $399 for the convenience of image hosting!
Build threads are in tatters all over the web!

Well the motor is still going strong - now 183k and still in daily use!
Might be getting a company car next year so potentially be going to 3rd car status.
Not sure if the wingback seats will be staying as they still seem to fetch strong money but thatll be next year!

Front brake pads are getting to the end of their life so anyone got any link to some decent OEM ones? Not that bothered about ultimate braking force just some normal replacements that I can pop in over the weekend.
Im pretty sure the GTI will hit 200k before the company car arrives and Im looking forward to that milestone  :happy2:

Interesting thread!

In a good way I hope

Changed the coolant temp sensor yesterday as the gauge was slow to creep up and fingers crossed that will fix it, off on long trip tomorrow to Shropshire from Lincoln so will get a decent run out.
Ive also installed a phone holder and charger on the dash as the satnav is ageing and I use Waze predominately over the standard VW Nav.
If my business mileage increases as expected 200k is in with a chance!

Been in my new job for a month now and the Golf has been sat hidden away in the garage not getting much use!
In the last few weeks Ive completed a few jobs :

Front pads changed  as the old ones were getting a little worn - Brembos were on offer so they went on.

Full oil and filter change as I do every year regardless of mileage including cabin filter

Nice fresh pair of front tyres Goodyear Eagle F1's - done about 10 miles on them so far!

Interior cleanup and hoover along with a leather treatment on the wingbacks.

Fresh wiper blades all round - Bosch

Headlight levelling sensor was replaced as the old one cracked - under the passenger side suspension area.

New crank sensor as the old one failed - genuine VW part too which was £140! Real pain to change but I managed it.

Brand new 12v battery as the old one was getting tired - put a high CCA Honda Diesel one in!

Im looking around for a set of standard grey leather front seats as the Wingbacks are coming out and will be heading to new home at some point in the future - seems to be a decent market for people installing them in their MK7 R's
MOT is due in another couple of months and once thats been done Ill probably be looking to swap the car for something else - fancy a Porsche 996 Turbo to be honest, must be mid life crisis time!

Some pics of the old girl taken today in the unseasonably warm weather.

Just read this from start to finish. Great thread!

I’d keep the seats if you don’t need the money! I’ve just bought a set, and the difference to standard seats is night and day!

Car feels a much more special place, and they’re so much more comfortable (especially for the wider gentleman) than the standard GTI seats.

Car looks great and well looked after, real credit to your care and attention

Cheers Ollie,

The car is in fantastic condition considering the mileage. A good friend has asked for first refusal once I’m ready to let it go and I’ve a set of standard grey leather leather seats going in hopefully this weekend so the wingbacks might find themselves up for sale at some point in the future too.

Not a clue what they go for to be fair but I’ll have a look round and see what they are likely to fetch if I decide not to reuse them in another vehicle.

Thanks for the kind words.
