Title: Josh's Edition 35 - Stage 2
Post by: JoshH on September 01, 2016, 09:07:10 am
Hi all!

Collected my fine example of an E35 this weekend and so far I am over the moon with it!

It's 5 door and DSG, both were important to me particularly the DSG as I'm shortly due an op to fuse my left wrist so driving manuals will become more difficult for me!

Here's a couple of pics. I'll warn you I'm a serial modder so by day 2 bits were being ordered!

Couple of pics on the day I collected it from Redline in Harrogate, a long 4 hour trip back to Cardiff was had!

The modding begins...!

Popped in to see the guys at Performance Engineering in Cardiff, they have worked on all my previous cars, Nathan the owner is a former calibration engineer from a big tuner in the U.K. So really knows his stuff when it comes to the remapping side of things.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpp147%2FNitroJosh%2F20667D02-BCAA-4797-AF27-008D79AF98F1_zpsxqa5hsbb.jpg&hash=4b113965cdf1fb169468b879513eb4182151c278)

After a good chat I've decided to cover all of the basics before going for power, I'm going to replace the fuel pump cam follower and oil pick up inside the sump. The car has only done 28k miles but better safe than sorry!

I did buy a GoFastBits DV+ from them there and then though!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpp147%2FNitroJosh%2F8D53D53E-C14F-437E-995A-CA05ABA2BFAB_zpsg0bfjqwa.jpg&hash=43cad71e1aa77a9429a4248b2111c1ebf0c8bbf8)

Then arrived home and the postman had been!

Welcome! Car looks good indeed. Don't see many Mk6 GTI's around, let alone an ED35
Good work to take care of all the maintenance parts first - I did the same with my ED30, and then all the braking and handling mods. However, need to do the pick up in the sump, and probably a carbon clean on the head. Jeez, there's always something to do on these...!

Hope you enjoy your new car!

Thanks guy!

They are quite rare I can't recall seeing one around before but maybe I just wasn't looking! The colour is great too, anybody know what it is called?

Fitted some dsg paddle extensions this morning as the standard ones are way too small. And being at 3 and 9 o'clock positions I found them very awkward to use with any lock on as they're at the wheels widest point!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpp147%2FNitroJosh%2FFFAE46ED-E9C7-4BAB-AFF1-F008AD411736_zps52ujajts.jpg&hash=feaf280be4df482120537754a3731e5d44ad47cf)

On the look out for an evoms intake now but it's proving difficult to find one in stock over here/one for sale second hand.

Looks like Carbon Grey to me.  Paint code should be LA9W I think.  Enjoy it!

Decided to smash the precat out

Little more noise and response and dsg makes a bit more of a crack noise than a muffled fart!

The free mods are the best Josh!  :innocent:

Looks like good work, let me know if you find some of the lag has been eradicated and if you notice better fuel economy. I know a handful of cases on the MK5 where this did exactly that on both fronts  :happy2:

Keen to see a vid of the change if ever you get round to doing one, even though it's subtle

I've had mine done, definitely felt a difference, bit of a deeper exhaust tone, felt more torquey too, less spool time

great little mod
Title: Re: Josh's Edition 35
Post by: JoshH on September 30, 2016, 11:58:20 pm
Ok so yep definitely a noticeable difference!

Sound wise deeper engine note and louder dsg cracks, I had the centre silencer removed a few weeks ago which made a HUGE sound difference but also brought in a bit of a boom/drone removing the precat seems to have made that boominess much less!

Picks up abut nicer and generally feels a bit more freed up in power.

Mpg I've not really noticed as I average around 18-20mpg lol.

Here's a little vid I put together, not the best but hopefully shows how it's changed.

Will more than likely be getting a Scorpion turbo back exhaust soon

After all that effort tonight I ordered a 3.5" downpipe from Sam Bryant/Relentless tuning.

Makes perfect sense to me as the 3.5" is a port match to the turbo/gasket whereas all the 3" ones are smaller than the turbo outlet!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpp147%2FNitroJosh%2F4EDF8C56-25CF-428B-81D0-251AF5713AAA_zpslxkxau7s.jpg&hash=e147061740aa00e2037884a3f9c2b635606a56b6)

Had surgery on my wrist this week to permanently fuse it in one place after an accident at work last year. Shame it has come to this but that's why I bought a DSG! Still, I won't be driving for a few weeks at least!

Gonna have a juicy scar though:

Very cool vid Josh, given it a like  :happy2:

Sounds the mutts on that launch you did, the farts are probably more 'drawn-out' and deeper I guess lol? My good mate runs a MK7 GTI with a scorpion decat and it reminds me of that in some ways, lot dirtier and vocal without sounding too forced.

Thanks Pete!

Altogether it sounds a lot nicer now but perhaps a bit too much drone from removing the centre resonator, not sure I would recommend that mod but you live and learn!

Today I ordered up a Scorpion 3" catback

Good work bud, it'll be loud haha! Should sound something like this, bearing in mind his is decatted.

What about a sports cat, that might take away some of the drone?

Loud is ok but the boom/drone can be annoying! A big box has arrived already with the scorpion so we will soon see, just waiting on the downpipe now.

That mk7 sounds pretty good! Started following you too  :happy2:

Nice looking car. I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
On the Relentless 3.5" dp. Is it one of the originals or the revised revision? I have one of the early ones fitted and was told that you should fit a poly bush in the dog bone mount. This is due to the flexy being to small and it will cause the hanger to fail.

It's the new version but I plan to fit a poly mount insert anyway! Just had a quick look at your project thread and love what you've done with your car! What issues did Alex have mating up to the BCS catback? Hoping I can fit straight onto my scorpion with no messing about!

Looking at your photos it looks like the old version with the smaller flexy. Either way if your fitting the insert you'll be ok. I hate the bloody insert though it vibrates so much it g t I n my tits.
Alex had to fabricate a section to make it line up with the BCS. It's the section after the dp with the lambda boss welded in. I'm not sure if it's just because I have the BCS prestige cat back with the extra silancer. Alex message Sam with what he had to do. So it might be worth asking Sam to make sure. Other wise it looked a well made but it's of kit for the price.
Thanks, I'm happy with how the mods are going so far. I'll definitely keep an eye on you thread  :happy2:

Ah ok the pic is one ive pinched from Sams page! My downpipe is winging its at fro China as I type this lol.

Next week we will see, fingers crossed that issue may have been resolved in the new tweaked design.

The catback has landed, resisting the urge to get it fitted is tough!

Fitted! Sounds mega, a bit noisey but can be driven around fairly easily if needed.

Exhaust sounds great! Has a proper tone to it not just noise if that makes sense. It's loud though! Cold starts are fairly bad, not as bad as my old focus RS mk2 that would set off my neighbours car alarm at 5am  :rolleye:

 Vid to come!

Sits nicely, rides super smooth but another 10mm lower up front would have been ideal but for £145 delivered you can't grumble! Wheels need spacing out a touch.

No DCC mate, rides nice and smooth without it too even on the 19's.

Replaced cam follower yesterday unsure if it had ever been changed but I now have piece of mind.

And finished off the brakes this morning ready to go on. Found some gti stickers similar to the mk7 gti PP brakes

Here's a quick vid of the exhaust swap over and before/after runs.

It may not sound it from the vid but it's 10x better now!
