Hi,
So I recently purchase a new genuine overhead light console, as the rocker switch for the door on mine was fd and kept blowing fuses. I have a 5 door.
Had a lil trouble finding the right part code for the item as they changed the number, but with a little help from your knowledgeable blokes got it sorted i think.
I received the new part yesterday and everything looks fine, except when i took the dome light plastic cover off. This mofo only has 2 501 bulbs and not the centre license plate one, like the original.
I dont know whether i can blame the supplier as they have ordered it using the vin and so i guess correct part number. Theres no reason a 3 door (or any car with black interior witha sunroof) wouldn't have the middle bulb that only turns on when the doors open so why is it missing? I'll probably try and mod the new part to look like the old as the connectors are all still there but would like to take some advice before i do irreversible damage to the new expensive part.
Also it seems the white plastic is a little weaker then the black i had.
What do you guys reckon i should do?

Think it was part of VW 2006 cost cutting. Hence 1 less bulb and thinner plastic.
-
Yeah my 07 plate golf only has 2 bulbs, not 3.
-
Yep... later revision. my 05 had 3.... my 07 has 2
-
You've got the correct part..... they superseded it with two bulb version.
Apparently the reason was that three bulbs drew too much current and burnt the switch out over time.
I don't like the two bulb style and had to replace mine....already doing my research I bought a good second hand unit from ebay.
Fitted all LED bulbs so won't draw the current of incandescent bulbs so should be good :D

Thanks for clearing things up guys.
Ive made a cuppa and gone out for some fresh air, the phone has been locked away again.
I can't believe they did that, like there going broke. The two 501s do sh*t all, n mine are led. The fing visor light is better then them two together.
Does that mean i got one of the better ones being an Apr06? /:innocent:

Aghh ohhh. Thanks Ady, that makes alot of sense and explains why i had to get a new one in the first place.
I only use led bulbs, but don't think the previous owner did.
I tried second hand but they were the same price as this.
Just thinking and so i should probably downrate my fuses for this item again, as i went upto 15 from 7.5 to get some use out of the old unit.

You could have bought one off the for sale section gti breaking for parts off danboy.
-
Ive been looking for a while. Even placed a wanted recently. Read one of the guys on here repaired his and it still fkd up in the end.
£60 with piece of mind is fine with me, (well its not but ive been looking for a while and is best opt i could find) £60 is not fine for a fing switch. Thieves
Danboy didnt have a sunroof and i was unsure if the 3dr would make a difference aswell.
-
I'm certain there is no difference to between the one with a sun roof and ones without. I was looking at them a month back and all the lights looked the same from both cars. Best thing if you don't like it is find a breakers yard and there are loads breaking.

Mine is a 56 with the 3 bulbs, but my switch is a little iffy to say the least.....
-
It's probably the halogen bulbs over heating and causing the unit to melt.

@Beej. You should do something about that.
Mines started like that when i got it. Pressed the button accidentally once and it kept blowing the interior light fuse.
No overhead, no visors, no glovy, jus footwells. Its fine in weather like this but when its nighttime and you hear something fall out a pocket. Its a pain

Yeah I will add it on the ongoing and ever increasing 'to do' list!

As said it is totally normal. The challenge for me was finding a new old stock one that has the lit up dial and switch. My '08 didn't have that, now it does. Doesn't look like yours doesn't either.
Lots of searching and waiting. Mine is grey as it's the GT but this is the original set up. The dial IMO is much better and matches the air con and light switch better.

Replaced my bulbs with LEDs I. The front and back lights ice white in the rear and blue in the front lighting is so much better than standard dull VW fitted regular bulbs worth the tenner as a noticable upgrade
