Title: Black 3 door GTi
Post by: Simon_2.0t on November 15, 2016, 11:38:37 am
I'm back!!  :happy2:

Picked a 06 Black 3 door GTi up at the weekend. In process of selling my Mk4 GTi anniversary and will then get some pics up.

Need the full "Lunn" clean inside and out, but very pleased with first impressions.

100% standard
130K
2 previous owners
Good service history

Will upload some pics soon.

Plans:
Give full clean inside, out and under the bonnet.
Full service
Cambelt, tensioner and water pump
Cam follower
PCV valve
DV Valve

Been away from the mk5s for a while so have a few questions.

What are the later part numbers for:
Cam follower
PCV Valve
DV
please

Also what plugs is everyone running at the mo, genuine VW best for standard?

Cheers Si

Welcome back mate!

It's funny how we both sold our MK5's at similar times 2014,  bought ep3's as run arounds and now ended up back in MK5's  at similar times! It must be the Crawley air

I got the latest part numbers from rtechperformance website :happy2: I would post a link but signal is sh*t.

I'm using NGK 7's spark plugs in mine with a stage 1 tune but they state there good for stock -> 2+

James a VDS said you've emailed him, if you decide to go with him you won't be disappointment with his work mate.

Can't wait to see this and have a catch up :happy2:

Defo mate.

Apologies for the poor pics.

Day it arrived:

Overall very happy with it, does need a lot of TLC, plus full service and standard Mk5 bits doing (cam follower, DV, PCV etc). Drives well and enjoying the Mk5 feel again.

Got my work cut out on this one, DBP!:

I have always said I'd never own a black car. But hoping with all experience I now have with detailing I'll be able to bring this back to life. Maintaining plus living with may be a different story, I know I have OCD with my cars.

Anyway, treated to a full goodies from local TPS
Full filter, air, oil, pollen, fuel
Oil
Spark plugs
Cam follower and HPFP seal
PCV and new gasket
DV (Revision G)
Front brake shields and bolts
Rear wiper arm, blade, cap and new nut

Hopefully getting to my brothers garage this weekend to get up on the ramp and give car a once over plus fit some of these.

Hi Si, I've just picked up a black gti project for myself. Will be watching what you do to this. Your Anni was super clean  :happy2:

Welcome back Si!
You're braver than me, going for a black car this time but expect it'll be no fuss for you!
Your last MK5 was lovely - I do keep looking at mkivs seeing as I have so many parts left over from my killed mkiv...
My ED30 has just clicked over to 80k - don't want to get rid - it's too much fun, so think it is a keeper now.

So the anni went last weekend:

Which meant I could put the mk5 in the garage and make a start on cleaning and also got along to my brothers garage to get it up on the ramp for a once over plus service.

I've made a start under the bonnet, this is what I was greated with:

Much easy on this one than my old red mk5 as that had the two metal pipes! This only the one and the rubber. So took my time and all done in no time. Car is on 131K and no sign than been replaced before...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh506%2Fs19lun%2FIMG_0196_zpsu2yxoimt.jpg&hash=3b878950f1e521dfefeffb2b378e31b485b67cb8)

Defiantly needed it!!

Checked cam and luckily no sign of wear. Don't know why VW doesn't put these in service plans!

New HPFP seal:

Ha ha, cheers Jake.

Nice to get a few bits done.

Not done a lot at the moment, washed it three times and spent an hour or so working on the bonnet paintwork.

Will get sometime soon hopefully.

Hows you, car going all ok?

you had practise on the mk5 black paint when you did my first eddy 3-3.5 years ago!

hows the correction going on your bonnet? are you seeing what works first before hitting the whole car?

It's far to cold at the minute to be detailing isn't it, I will man up and do mine over Christmas ready for the snow!

I'm well mate just plodding along, what about you?

Car is fine, I've managed to break the intake snorkel thing so that needs replacing but not the end of the world.

Just getting basics done at the moment, front disc/pads next. Have DV to fit.

Then like to get cam belt and maybe chain done.

Hopefully next year the fun parts, Stage 2 and relevant hardware  :happy2:

I'll second that, I go to VDS too, wouldn't have anyone else look at my car! James really knows his stuff! :)

Great work , looking nice and fresh, just a question regarding the LED number plate bulbs, have you experienced any bulb out issues?

Wife kindly took my son to the shops the other weekend so I could have a day cleaning  :signLOL:

Made a start the evening before giving a full wash and dry, then got out the garage the next day to make a start.

Gave the paintwork a full clay:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh506%2Fs19lun%2FIMG_1016_zpsjzwk6ouv.jpg&hash=d5658516f5427975ecfe4daacf3df1713579edb6)

Then broke out the machine polisher:

Started with my usual, 3M FastCut and green pad. Few passes on the roof and starting to get good results:

Then next was the PB Blackhole with a black waffle pad:

Boot has a few areas to improve, plus a small dent I need to get removed:

Then gave full car a coating of DJ Purple haze:

Not bad for a days work:

Over the years I have noticed, first full detail always good. But to try and get everything at once a big job. Like with everything building up overtime really helps. This car has been used and not pampered before me. So will start to notice a big improvement with the paint work over the next few months.

Next jobs, cam belt, water pump and cam chain.

Lovely work, great improvement on the bumper lip especially!

Cheers.

Still a way to go, but defiantly an improvement on the paintwork.

Think will tackle again nearer the spring and then seal with a good sealant as heard good for black.

I am not looking forward to dusty summer days and my OCD mind....  :surprised:

James kept in contact with me all day to update how was going, and did a fnatastic job. Very pleased, excellent work and the car drives great. As was up on the ramps also asked James to fit my new Rev G DV, clearly needed it from split in old one!

Typically the day I book the car in it SNOWS! No chance to test on way home, just a gentle run home:

Once clears will update on how car performs now.

Time for an update guys, sorry for slow posts recently.

After getting the work done the other month I was getting the EML light up, nothing to do with the quality of James' work, far from it. Just one of those things, plus he went the extra mile to help diagnose.

So on collecting the car James had said was getting a P000A Bank 1 error, at first he felt was N205, so rather than just chucking a new one in he spent time cleaning old one for me, and we got the code cleared. Unfortunately it came on within 10 miles. So we felt a new N205 was the answer, another trip to TPS:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh506%2Fs19lun%2FIMG_1320_zpsyuzzk2zt.jpg&hash=e4ee291345d29df1357b6cc05149b3426d53ebe3)

Also picked up a pair of new wiper blades whilst in there.

So went back to James, he fitted the new valve. Did a live test run with VDCS and all seemed good. Was a slight concern as the values did dropped once during the test run but thought was just new valve adjusting.

Got home all fine, but light came on next day (under 20 miles) Dam!! Back to the drawing board.

After a bit of research, head scratching and calling upon my brother. We felt a oil change and pick up pipe could be the answer. Also read up about the cam chain adjuster seals going. So... another trip back to TPS! This time I got invited round the other side and my own chair pulled up! Guys in there really great and always very helpful.

So I ordered:
6 litres of oil
One genuine oil filter
Two BOSCH oil filters (had 10 litres of 5/30 oil to do the two oil flushes)
Sump plug and washer
Dipstick
Oil pick up pipe
Pick up pipe seal
Sump sealant
Cam chain gasket
Brake vacuum housing gasket (correct one this time)
Three cam chain seals
Plus two engine cover rubbers (been off so much recently old ones starting to show signs of wear!!)

Then loaded all in the car and paid my brother a visit (front discs/pads still to fit!):

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh506%2Fs19lun%2FIMG_1516_zpsmfjnzyzn.jpg&hash=75800137c4fd2bbf14a2e294e31407b21188ebf6)

Drained the old (well just over 1,000 mile!) oil and popped a BOSCH filter on, filled up and did a quick 10 mile test run to get oil flowing round. We was going to do an engine flush, but heard mixed reviews on this so went for this option. We then drain oil and fitted the second BOSCH filter and run up again.

Can see her filter on right after first change and only 10 miles, one on left was the second so defiantly clearing it up:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh506%2Fs19lun%2FIMG_1520_zpsyevyinzn.jpg&hash=e7447c0561d82bf9bf5fc9c65544c71863f9a8d8)

Plus oil coming out of second change much clearer (the first one was still black after only 10 miles):

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh506%2Fs19lun%2FIMG_1521_zps8uhkgvf3.jpg&hash=eaeed5a69f4a69b75b8d0bd8dc62dfb84e709641)

Time to drop the sump now:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh506%2Fs19lun%2FIMG_1524_zpsawknx6ut.jpg&hash=09ac2219b0c0bf9ea4d66c4c8fb2c56b634c1f2e)

Sump came of nice and easy (think test runs helped). Oil pick up pipe was in a bit of a mess, plus a lot of debris in it and the bottom of sump:

Then whilst the sealant was setting before putting good oil in, started to take the cam chain housing off. Ended up taking fuel pump, battery, turbo heat shield all off so as to make room, plus make sure nice and lined up when refitting.

Once we took the cam chain housing off, one of the seals was broken in the bottom of it, so 100% my issue. At last problem solved!!

Few updates.

As always with a new car I find myself looking in the classifieds, eBay etc for some new wheels. These came up on FB, plus fairly local. Guy selling didn't have spec for them (he was even unsure of PCD), but with a bit of research I took a gamble, they fit!

OZ Superturismo GTs
8x18
ET35
225/40/18 Toyos

From ad:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs19lun%2FMobile_Uploads%2F52a332c6-7c64-4fda-89ca-e0d405112410_zps9joysox2.png&hash=e2a4263b10c75456d1674fcd664fb92588d04e20)

Was for five of them (hence one I have in the classifieds)

Got them home:

In need of some TLC but all straight, no leaks and only two have a few little marks. If the new one doesn't sell I may stick that on and sell the other cheaper.

Made a start on bringing them up. First a wash and some Wonder wheels treatment:

Very pleased with them, plus drives and handles nice on them. I think once have a drop will be even happier. I prefer to do suspension first, but these came up first.

Also made a start on tidying up the engine bay.

Picked up a new coolant expansion tank and a black VW cap (getting the black washer fluid one to match next).

Easy job to do, drained the fluid from old tank into a jug then fitted new one and refilled.

New vs old:

Looks smart on the OZ's! I've just got a set but realised my standard wheel bolts are too short. What bolts are you using? Unsure what length I need and whether I need tapered or radius?

The coolant sensor is built into the expansion tank right?

Where did you pick it up from?

Cheers mate.

Can with the longer bolts plus lockers. Thread is 35mm long, radius seat.

Thanks

Brilliant thanks for that! Was googling last night and couldn't find a definite answer so much appreciated! Will get some ordered.

It's refreshing to see someone more obsessed with cleaning and restoring worn out parts as me. Technicians at work think I'm mad for all the little bits I order from tps for the Golf.

I read your old thread on the red golf shortly after joining this group and found it very helpful sorting some issues on my own car. Looking forward to seeing this new project progress!

Yes I'd rather get the car up to scratch first before modding.

Sad news about the old red one, spotted it on FB with no engine in!!! Last two owners neglected it a little  :sad1:

Guy who has it now sounds like bringing it back up to spec tho.

Sorry to pick up on old post but the seals or rings whatever you want to call them on the cam chain cover for the vvt what part number did you use as when I replaced mine my local tps had no clue what I was on about and after some research I found some but the ones I took off were metal and the ones I put back were plastic ? I've never had any fault codes or prOblems as such but I'm sure my vvt doesn't always work as it should.

Then whilst the sealant was setting before putting good oil in, started to take the cam chain housing off. Ended up taking fuel pump, battery, turbo heat shield all off so as to make room, plus make sure nice and lined up when refitting.

Once we took the cam chain housing off, one of the seals was broken in the bottom of it, so 100% my issue. At last problem solved!!

Plus I can report after 70 miles now no EML light!! Yes. Sorted. So pleased to get done. Plus if anyone else thinking of doing or getting cam chain done replace those seals, only £30

I'll dig out the part number mate.

Not listed as a repair for the mk5 but the three rings I did change fix the issue.

Sorry mate been ages since updated this!! I'm good thanks, how are you?

So I've fitted AP coilovers to the car, new 205/40 profile Pilot Sport tyres, uprated bushes and had the wheel alignment done. Open front fog grills, smooth plate...I think thats it. Maybe a few bits I've forgotten! Bit of carbon film to trim inside.

New to get some new pics

What a great thread, good to see what you have done and very useful information. You're local(ish) to me too. I'm in Brighton but work in Crawley Hospital so up that way 5 days in 7! The guys in Crawley TPS are great, they really helped me out recently with some bits - so friendly, they really know how to look after their customers.

If there are people in the area perhaps we can have a meet up and talk mk5?  My car isn;t up to your standards but shes gives me many smiles per mile

Thanks Molesy. Yes the guys at TPS are great. Due to head back as done 3000 miles since last oil change. Mk5 meet up sounds good to me.

very nice car.

Second set off APs I've had. Had another set on my old red Mk5. Yes they are great for daily driving. I have a 6 year old and he is fine in the back.

Cheers

Looking good Si - glad to read you still have this. How was fitting the front plate print to the US front? Just interested as I have one for mine, and am not sure if to try the vinyl, or to just go with the shortened plate. Looks a fiddly job to get the vinyl right?!

Hi Dave, how are you?

I ended up buying a vinyl and some of that removable stuff. So stuck plate to that then plinth so I can remove. Have a link somewhere.

Must have missed this thread, but that plate rings a bell. Were you on ukmkivs with a silver mk4 by any chance?

I'm good thanks - still have the ED30. Wish I could turn back time as it's coming up to 90k. Love the thing. Lots of projects I want to add to the car - just need the time & ££! My indy said it's one of the better ones they've seen (of course they'd say that when settling the bill...)...
Cheers for the link  :drinking:

Cheers guys. Not much to update really, been cleaning and such as normal. Doing oil and filter every 3,000. Just clicked over the 145,000 mark now. Got a warning light for steering rack torque sensor so have a new rack to fit soon.

Refurbed rack all fitted and coded.

In other news will be removing my pvt plate and putting the car up for sale. I will do a ad very soon. If anyone interested in a lovely example that has had all the right running maintenance done give me a shout.
