Hi guys,
Been lurking on here a little while, usually spend my time over at VWROC. I'm Ollie, 22 and from Cardiff.
Thought I'd start a build thread for my 2012 Golf R. Currently lowered on BC coilovers, with H&R anti roll bars and power flex bushes. Also upgraded to EBC slotted discs and Yellowstuff pads all round.
The car is an ex VW demo with every option available, including the Recaro wing backs. This is actually my second Golf 6 R - unfortunately my first was written off in an accident.
Will update over the next few days when I get a bit more time :)

She's a beauty. Welcome to the forum. :happy2:
-
Nice! My perfect 6R spec! Welcome mate :happy2:
-
Great looking car that sits perfectly in my book Ollie, welcome :happy2: :drinking:
Hope this one has a better life while with you
-
Welcome along, will keep an eye out. Lovely looking R you have
-
Thanks all - it was a PITA to source one with that spec. As luck would have it, someone over at VWROC heard about my accident and messaged me as he was thinking of selling up in the near future.
Did GTI Inters this Sunday, will try and get some more photos up later
Welcome along, will keep an eye out. Lovely looking R you have
Thanks Dan! I can see you're local and have VCDS - are you able to turn on the large speedo on my MFD? Drop me a message if this is something you can do :happy2:

Cheers both :happy2:
I did wind it down some more out of curiosity, but the wheels were catching the inner lip. Now back to a practical-ish height, just had it aligned too so feels spot on.
I do have some wider SRS-Tec arches which I'm unsure about, been meaning to do a trial fit, hopefully this weekend.

Car had it's MOT yesterday, flew through with no advisories.
Not too much to update other than;
Whipped the diverter valve off. Car has a rev. D fitted, will be upgrading to a GFB DV+ soon as it's a fit and forget item.

Got hold of a TTS engine cover, thought I'd offer it up whilst the engine cover was off. Need a nice intake before I can fit it, thinking EvoMS or Revo.

Also updated the RNS510 firmware and upgraded the maps.

Not much planned at the moment, insurance is up next month so that's the next purchase :sad1:

eBay bud, had these discs a little while though, think they have since released a new maps (v13).
Worth doing if you haven't already, speeds it up to use and also enables video in motion. :pomppomp:

Gave the car it's weekly maintenance wash today, a friend also called around with his R32 GTR. Gave it another coat of Dodo Juice Blue Velvet just to finish the proceedings.

I was also contacted through VWROC by a freelance journalist who was compiling a buyers guide for Evo mag. He asked me to share a few words as to why I chose to buy one. Six weeks later a free copy popped through the door!

Car looks really good Ollie! Definitely the best colour for an R :happy2:
The GFB DV+ was nice and easy to fit and hopefully won't need touching again!

Cheers Josh! I read on here yesterday someone had been through two rev G's in two weeks, think the DV+ is much more cost effective and total peace of mind.
those seats :happy2:
They do finish the interior off very nicely!
-
This sits so damn well on those 19s! Does it still ride well?
Apparently the GFB DV+ is even more responsive than the Rev G, which in turn is (in theory) more responsive than the Rev D, so you should feel a nice improvement. And it's better in terms of reliability like you say.
Really like the mk6 R. This one looks top notch.

Not going to lie but it's pretty stiff, but I'm sure thats down to the polybushes. The BC coils are a lot nicer than the standard shocks, which had Adaptive Chassis Control. However, took the long way home from work this week through some iconic Welsh B-roads that Chris Harris uses often on his Youtube videos. Despite the stiff ride when pottering around, all is forgiven when on a hoon. It's totally planted, no flex in the chassis whatsoever.
Will try and order a GV+ soon, also need to do cam follower and PCV valve.
-
Yep, that pretty much sums up the mk5/6. A bit rough round town but once you're up to speed spot on in the bends. I'll be hitting a few Welsh B-roads myself in a couple of weeks. Quite looking forward to it.
-
Definitely. Great fun when you want it but also a (relatively) comfortable and practical car for any occasion.
-
When we next go for a blast up to Brecon you should tag along! Few nice picture opportunities! Nate PE can sort you out with a DV+ too.
-
Looking good Ollie :happy2:

Definitely mate, we head up that way quite a bit, you on Instagram? Shoot me a message if so, @olliedunstall, have a few mates who would tag along too!
Looking good Ollie :happy2:
Cheers bud :happy2:

Lovely car you've got, I've just put a deposit on a white one really really would of liked a blue one but when there isn't too many to pick from and when you want a Manual, low milage etc etc it's seems impossible so had to give on something so white it is :happy2: can't wait
In that mag picture it's says only 800 mk6 r are in the uk, is this correct?

Glad to hear mate, you will love it.
Definitely under 1000 and many state around 800 - take away a few that have been stolen/written off (I did one of them :sad1:)
They are hard to find when you're looking, especially when you have a desired spec. I got very lucky with both of my 6R's, this one was the jackpot IMO!
Get a thread going when you collect! :happy2:

457bhp and 430lb/ft. And it spools like a k04 by the look of things. Want.

Car look's awesome! I assume you can fit a TTS engine cover even with an aftermarket Intake?
-
Saw some pictures of this the other day.... taken by my dad of all people!
Think he's doing some work at your place? Looked lovely in the photos anyway!
-

Cheers mate! Yes, the TTS one will only go on with an aftermarket intake as the current cover has the intake built into it

Nice one mate!
I did see that BCS are running a Black Friday sale. Christmas could get very expensive, very quick.

No "update" as of yet, but been collecting bits and pieces ahead of my deep clean planned for Christmas.

High temperature paint, hoping to give the calipers a tidy up, along with clean/dress the inner arches.

New sill protectors. Been wanting these for ages, as mine are quite scabby from previous owners, but only had two options;
i) Buy the cheap Chinese replicas at £50 for the pair
ii) Buy the genuine articles from VW @ £70 EACH
Contacted Lockwood International (who do the Golf 7 R sill protectors popular on VWROC) but they don't make them for the 6R as there is no demand to warrant designing etc.
Very luckily found two genuine protectors on eBay yesterday, brand new in the box. And the best bit... £29 delivered! Chuffed.
Looking forward to getting things fitted. Just waiting on the new decals for the calipers, should be with me tomorrow.
-
Good find on the Sill Protectors! Bargain too.
Looking forward to seeing the end product when its finished, I will be going to town cleaning mine when the Suspension and Wheels are fitted in January
-
Looks like you've got a really nice example and one with a great spec would love one of as my next car after the gti :happy2:

Cheers bud. Truthfully, condition was good but I'm very OCD and so I saw a lot of room for improvement. Externally it's clean (aside from usual stonechip or two and a few wheel grazes - soon to be fixed!) but inside needed a little TLC. I've slowly been replacing the trims bit by bit, will be better than factory when I'm done :happy2:
-
Been neglecting the thread on here - some images from over Christmas.
Car received the following;
1. Brake calipers repainted gloss black with OEM decals applied

Plugged it straight into the computer and updated the software. Hopefully get it installed this weekend. For those who don't know, it displays an additional screen on the MFD and allows you to view over 150+ engine parameters, i.e. AFR, Boost etc.
Didn't really intend to buy it just yet, but managed to get one brand new unused for a good price off a fellow VAG owner who no longer wanted to install it.
FINALLY, a recent favourite photo:

Better late than never I guess...
07.01.2016
Service time.
Car has just ticked over 50k. I had the DSG, Haldex, Brake Fluid & Major Service completed at VW last year within a week of buying it at approx. 43k. I also had the car put back to time/distance servicing, as it was previously on a Longline service plan.
Therefore, this year, minor service and also timing belt and water pump were due. I held off with the plugs - although not due, I will be replacing them to NGK BKR7EIX soon.

- Oil Service (switched to 5w40 which is recommended for the TFSI, especially as I have plans to map it this year. Went with Total Quartz 9000 fully synthetic).
- OEM Air & Oil Filters
- OEM Genuine VW Timing Belt
- OEM Genuine VW Waterpump
Luckily a friend is an Audi technician, and therefore can get me parts at trade price plus install for me.
I also thought it was a good time to change the cam follower. For those who may not know, this sits small tappet sits on the cam lobe behind the fuel pump. Although it's not a 'serviceable item' so to speak, it's well worth replacing and periodically checking. They are prone to wear over time, some worse than others, and if not replaced can wear through and cause damage to the camshaft.

Above is mine after 50k. I'm pretty sure this is the first time it has been replaced.
Finally, I managed to borrow his garage to fit my PolarFIS Advanced:

So far, so good. Install was a PITA. I opted to fit it via the driver cubby hole, move the fuse/relay board slightly and reach right back to the CAN gateway. The main struggle was getting to the CAN, once I'd located it I managed to install it within 30 seconds. Plug and play.

Truthfully I've not had much time to use it yet, but it's super easy to use and should come in handy later down the line.

Hopefully I'll get some time this weekend to explore the full list of features.
One final image from when the roads weren't as salty!

Thanks both, means a lot :happy2:
A little slow on updates. No pictures as the car is hanging with salt and dirt. I haven't washed it since Christmas (possibly a record for me!) as every time I reach for the pressure washer it seems to piddle down. Hopefully I get a chance this weekend!
Anyway, in the last few weeks I have...
1. Booked in for front end respray - bonnet (including underside), front bumper and front arches being gently rolled and painted. Should be totally mint when done and get rid of some of the nasty stone chips. It's booked in for 3 weeks time
2. Bought a Revo Intake & GFB DV+. Still waiting to be fitted, though. I figured it will be a sensible time once the paint is done, as I can put my TTS engine cover on too and finish everything off nicely. Thanks to AKS for these, great service. I also bought black washer and coolant caps to finish things off a little, just need an R8 oil cap now.
3. Just ordered a BCS Powervalve TBE! I've heard only good things from BCS, and their Powervalve system seems to tick all the boxes - sedate and fairly quiet off boost, but loud when you give it the beans. They're currently running a group buy which I had to jump on - a few phone calls back and forth with Nige to discuss the options and it's officially done. He fried my head as he talked me through the engineering behind it but it's clear he knows his stuff. I've gone for 200cel sports cat, single centre box and twin rear silencers. It's a little louder than their regular system and I've no doubt it's going to sound epic!
All I need now is two new tyres (thinking Michelin PSS - for an all round tyre with good fast road capabilities - anyone running them?) and a wheel refurb and it should be immaculate for the summer.
Cheers, Ollie :happy2:

The Golf has been in the bodyshop for the last week, having the front end tarted up. Had a phone call this afternoon saying it should be done by end of the week. A little longer than expected but happy to wait for a good job.
In the meantime, I've got stuck into this. Trying to keep it OEM/understated as I can, should look good next to the Revo intake.
One standard TTS engine cover;

Filled the recess for the Audi badge in with filler. Absolute ball ache to do, wasn't happy first time to tried again. The end result;

Satin black cover with gloss black inserts.
Not completely happy, you can see some light sanding marks in direct light and if you look closely from a certain angle you can see a small sink in the filler. It took hours of filling/sanding and don't think I can get it any better myself, and I don't think you'd notice the flaws in the engine bay unless you were looking very closely.
I did consider having it done professionally but thought it would be a fun little DIY job to have a go at. Kept me amused for a few hours and certainly tested my patience!
-
Interested to see if the Bodywork is done a top standard! Hopefully you are happy with it.
As for the Engine Cover, It never bothered me having nothing there when I had the Revo Intake but that said my Engine Bay was Detailed regularly so never got chance to get dusty and look a mess. Having an Engine cover does make it easier to keep clean.
Have to say though I have never really been a fan of the Audi TTS Cover, Just looks a bit tacky to me

Having seen the previous work he's carried out I've plenty of faith in the body shop.
Dust/dirt isn't an issue for me as I also keep on top of it, however I can't help but think it looks a bit incomplete without a cover.

Sunday 09 April:
Got my car back from the bodyshop on Sunday.
Really pleased with the finish. Total work done is as follows:
- Roll the front wings. Nothing extreme, just some more room, and still retain the OEM mudguards.
- Flush out the screw holes in front bumper
- Paint the front bumper, bonnet, wings & blend slightly into the door
- Paint the underside of bonnet
Quick photo from when I called in previously - straight out of the gun before flat & polish:

The colour match is spot on, I've been inspecting it in several lights and you really can't tell it's been painted. The rest of the car could do with a detail now to bring it all up to standard!
I was unsure what to do regarding the front plate. After some research, I've installed some very strong magnets behind the rear bumper, and the same on the reverse of the plate. Whips off and on with ease, and lines up perfectly every time. Now I can have the best of both worlds for keeping it legal/posing for photos, lol.
Also decided to sort the bay out and fit some parts I've been piling. Had some help from a friend and did the following:
- Install GFB DV+
Been meaning to do this for a while. Fit and forget item, can't really notice any difference (came from rev D) but only done 10mls since fitting.
- Install Revo CAI
Loud, but good. Not intrusive when pottering around (which I was originally worried about), but give it some welly and you can really hear it. Feels a little more responsive, too.
- Install TTS Engine Cover & Black Coolant/Washer Caps
Purely for aesthetic reasons, not a fan of the open TFSI engine (looks messy) and the blue caps were ugly. Just needs an R8 oil cap now to finish it off.

Arguably the best Golf front end ever!!

Gorgeous car this. And done with lots of care, with the right mods. If I had a mk6 R (and believe me, I want one) I'd be aiming for something like this.
Top work.

Thanks for the kind words mate
I'm trying to keep it as OEM+ as possible; subtle but purposeful.
The only other thing exterior-wise I'm considering is a Kerscher carbon front lip and an OEM rear diffuser in carbon to match. I'm just worried about ground clearance on the front
In other news, got my BCS system fitted yesterday... wow!
What a noise and what a difference. Will try and get some pictures and videos today

If so, I'd go for it. It follows the lines of the bumper and isn't OTT. Definitely OEM+ in my opinion. I think you'll be able to fit it quite flush like the one in the pic, or slightly further forward for a more 'chinny' look.
As for the BCS, they're a bit good aren't they?! Not just the noise, but the power gains. I got 15bhp and 20lb/ft straight away, then an extra 10bhp and 25lb/ft on top of that after a tweak to Stage 2, no other mods. And that's on a k03.
Enjoy!

That's the badger! It's the only aftermarket one I like to be honest. The others are a bit shouty and can look a bit 'stuck on' or tacky.
The car definitely feels a little torquier, but since the intake, GFB and exhaust have gone on a LOT more responsive. Pin the throttle and you're gone.
I love the way it's so sedate when cruising, but WOT it's crazy loud! Looking forward to some spirited drives now :jumpmove:

BCS is the best mod I've done. Sounds like you agree! What map are you on, and did you go decat or sport cat?

Went for 200cel sports cat. The cat back has one centre silencer (instead of the usual two) but then two boxes on the rear which are valved. In essence, under WOT, the rear boxes are bypassed so there's only one small resonator in the middle.
I'll just leave this here....

Made up with it mate, really impressed and has certainly exceeded my expectations considering it's only a 4 pot! And all without a drop of drone.
That's a friends R32 GTR, first outing this year since it's fresh paint :happy2:

They're 100mm which is just shy of 4" (3.93701" to be exact ), and fill the diffuser recesses perfectly IMO.

Been quiet with the updates recently. Nothing too much has happened; I've reached a point where I'm enjoying the car but going into my third year of ownership I can't help but focus on what's next. The Golf has been faultless and is an incredible all-rounder, but who knows what next year may bring. I toyed with the idea of a fuel pump and 2+ map however I think I'd rather keep the cash and enjoy it as is.
Had my wheels refurbished back to OEM hyper silver;

Whilst the wheels were off it was a good excuse for a deep clean; arches washed, decontaminated and dressed in Poorboys Natural Look. Brake disc bells painted black (apologies for the shocking photograph!)

Gave all wheels two coats of Gtechniq C5 Wheel Armour including the inner barrels. Yet to comment on the product as I haven't washed it yet but it was easy to apply and certainly gave them a glossy finish.

Hi guys,
Been a while since I posted on here.
Just a quick message to send out a feeler to anyone who may be interested in buying my car. It's not officially for sale yet, will probably putting it up toward the end of the year, but just a heads up to anyone who might be interested. I could be persuaded to let it go beforehand if I get a good offer.
Hopefully I don't need to bang on about condition etc - hopefully my documentation of the car over the last few pages will show how well it's been cherished. Full service history, MOT is due next month but will be sorted.
2012 (62) Golf 6 R DSG, currently on 54k'ish, will rise gently as I cover around 500mls/month. Every possible extra (including RNS510, Recaros, DCC, Dynaudio, blah blah blah) plus some OEM+ mods (listed below) that make this car drive so, so well (and look the part, too!).
Been serviced at the correct intervals, with OEM genuine parts, can provide more info. if required.
Mods include BC Racing Coilovers, H&R Anti Roll Bars, Polybushed, BCS Powervalve Exhaust w/ 200cel Sports Cat, Revo CAI, GFB DV+, Polar FIS Advanced, TTS engine cover, Carbon mirror caps, probably more that I've missed; thats just off the top of my swede.
Genuine reason for sale as I'm itching to get into something with a flat six motor, something I've wanted to do for a while and now seems the time to do it before I have to be sensible.
Please get in touch if you are - or know anyone that may be - interested. Happy to sell in standard form if I have buyers for the parts, but would rather it go as is.
Cheers, Ollie.

Long time, no update.
The car is staying - toyed with the idea of a 981 Cayman S however prices are holding strong (not a bad thing!) but my budget would see me in a car which I wouldn't 100% be happy with spec wise.
So, the Golf gets some more loving...
Fuel pump fiasco - long story short, bought a "brand new, never fitted" LOBA fuel pump from eBay. Fitted it and it was knackered - pissing fuel everywhere which is of course extremely dangerous. Took it off and upon further inspection there was a hairline crack in the side, and several of the fittings had been butchered. Managed to get my money back through PayPal after opening a claim.
It just so happens that this was the day before I was due to go to R Tech for Stage 2+ map. Unfortunately I couldn't make it, spoke with R Tech who were very understanding and allowed me to move my booking without losing the deposit.
I have ordered new internals which are currently at R Tech who will fit them for me when I go there. I'm sick of taking my fuel pump on and off and was cheesed off with the LOBA pump so decided to let them do it for me!
Bought a set of 19" OZ Ultraleggera HLT and some Michelin Pilot Sport 4S for them to wear:

Car hasn't been driven in around 2 months, hoping to give it a blast this weekend. Will wait until the car has been mapped (09 May) before I fit the wheels and splitter! Here are some trial fit pictures:

Stunning :happy2:
Lovely rims, but I would say that as I have 18s on my MK7. Really suit the car and colour.

Great choice of wheel Ollie :happy2:
cheers

Thanks for the kind words; originally I was going to have them refurbished in an anthracite but I'll keep them black for a while first. I think it compliments the black/carbon accents around the car.

Cheers Nige - still haven't stopped singing your praises 12 months on :happy2:

Two weeks since my trip to R Tech, the car feels totally different. The torque is sublime and has made the car a LOT more useable. Can't reccomend the guys there enough, very professional and accomodating.
Got the wheels on, four wheel alignment and went for a drive through Brecon Beacons - been ages since I've properly driven it and it felt good!
Now running 19 x 8J OZ Ultraleggera with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S' all round:

how did you rate the ps4 tyres as I'm considering them myself.

They are great, I run them on my OEM Talladega's also. A good fast road tyre but also very good in the wet.
Hoping to get the car on track later in the year so will be interesting to see how they perform there.
