Title: Crout's Tornado GTi
Post by: Zipupurmickey on January 23, 2017, 01:16:18 am
So I picked this up back in October, it was a impulse buy over coffee with one of my good mates who was the second owner of the car with only 121k km. He had owned it for the past 3 years and only racked up a mer 10k Km during his ownership. He's away at sea for half the year so the car was driven rarely and garaged every night. I always wanted to scratch the Mk5 itch. So the deal was done and I collected the car the following week. I am absolutely delighted with it, drives superb, it ticks a lot of boxes for me. The car is a 2006 AXX Tornado Red GTi, completely standard bar the wheels and Parrot hands free kit.

The car spec is by no means epic compared to some of the cars on here, my plan was to keep it standard(ish) and just keep her maintained and fresh.

Spec:
Usual GTi extras
Genuine 18" Bbs Ch's
6 speed man
Leather heated seats
Sun roof
Factory aero wipers
Blue tinted glass all round
Passenger mirror tilt when in reverse
Heated mirrors
Midline display
Auto lights
Auto wipers
Auto dim mirror
Cup holders
Iso fix
Tpms
I'm sure there's more but no point in boring you with a list of extras that most GTi's came with anyway.

Here's the car

I kept the car standard apart from a Parrot hands free kit and just gave it the usual care.

The modding bug didn't stay buried for long, this GTi came to my attention about two weeks ago and it was only 15 minutes up the road from me, it had a knackered bottom end but with a breathtaking spec, I thought if I transferred all the extras into mine and break the rest to make some of the money back surely it would be worth while. So I had the car home the following day.

So the bits I have transferred over are,

Genuine xenon headlights
Rns510 with aux button beside traction control
R32 front and back brakes with braided lines
Turbo back Milltek with sports cat
Forge fmic with piping
Evolution V flow intake
H&R cup kit
Power flex wishbones + dog bone mount
Valeo led tail lights
R8 coilpacks and red harness
Dv rev D
Porsche oil cap
Porsche washer fluid cap
Porsche coolant cap
Alu ashtray
GTi seat inserts
Alu GTi dead pedal
Cruise control retro fitted

Next on the cards is a hpfp and a remap from our local guru Joe Power.

It's the little things that matter! I might look into doing it black at some stage, but then the GTi badge might stick out.

Looking great buddy  :happy2:

Fellow Dublin based tornado red GTI owner Here!

I have some similar mods to you. Have a set of Valeos waiting to be fitted!

Joe power has worked his majic on my car already (just stage 1). Highly recommended!!

I've fitted a 3in TBE exhaust and ram air intake since I was with him. I've a hpfp and Peron intercooler to get fitted before I head back to him for stage 2 mapping  :happy2:

Looking forward to keeping an eye on your progress  :happy2:
Regards,
Dave

Looks great Gerrit, great way to upgrade

have you got VCDS? Just make sure you disable the cold diagnosis for the rear lights if you didn't already know about it. The Leds don't like the start up process and flicker and burn out quicker

What's that about fab5freddy? Will be fitting my Valeos soon and hadn't heard about this cold diagnosis on the VCDS?
Hope you're keeping well mate?
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks for the kind words Dave, I'm looking forward to getting her mapped by Joe, he mapped my old S3 and my current V6 4Mo and he transformed them completely, lovely lad to deal with too. Those bits will make a good difference to your car.

Thanks James, I have Vcds yes but I didn't know about the leds having that issue, I will definitely look into that tomorrow, I appreciate the heads up, Dave if you want yours done I can code them for you too.

I was 50/50 for the first few days Stephen but they've really grown on me, they look very different at night too.

Yeah, sorry Dave, forgot you were fitting these, if you can't hook up with Gerrit, I can do this for you  :happy2:

From my understanding the cecm sends pulses out to all the lights if activated to test for bulb outs, it makes the leds flicker and shortens the life span apparently

Interesting James, so I need to go into central electrics then and go into long coding to change that? My xenon adapters arrived this morning too so I'll be coding in the shutters today so I'll do both while I'm at it.

That's it mate, you'll see a big block for the cold diagnosis of all lights, just disable rear lights

Cheers buddy. Looking forward to getting all the bits fitted soon. Cheers for the offer of the VCDS coding. I have VCDS, so should be able to get it sorted :happy2:

That's brilliant buddy. Cheers. I'll make sure to do that with mine too. I think VCDS was one of the best purchases I made :happy2:

No problem at all Dave, brilliant bit of kit to have. I've used mine quite a bit now between Drl to coding some of the nifty locked features.

Got the rears sorted today James, didn't actually notice that they did that until I got someone else to start my car earlier while I stood behind.

Welcome 76tow, no you won't need it for a standard map to let's say 240-250ish. Once you sort out supporting mods I.e dp with sports cat, panel filter etc then look into it.

So myself and a buddy got around to fitting the xenons and fmic this evening, coded in the shutters too as they were flickering like crazy until I coded them in. To say I'm delighted is an understatement. The new cooler has definitely made the air flow sound louder (hard to explain). There's a bend after the pancake pipe that I'm not happy with as there's too much of a bend/kink, I'd like to sort that as smooth airflow is everything and I don't want to loose to much pressure loss, so I've two options to look into, get a smaller pipe or cut the inlet on the cooler itself. Apart from that it was easy enough to fit the core as it was a oem fit for the Mk5. It's still pretty hidden in behind the grille.

Some pics,

The car had some work done over the weekend by a friend of mine. He installed the H&R springs, powerflexed wishbones, and the R32 front and back brakes.

The springs and new wishbones have definitely tightened the ride and made the steering more snappy and responsive, yet it's not too low and still gives it an Oe look. While fitting the springs she got two new top mounts to freshen it up a bit more.

The R32 brakes are fantastic, up front are 345s, each side complete weighs close to 20kg rears are 310s with braided lines all round.

Brought her for a long enjoyable spin today. She's filthy but hey.

Nice set of upgrades! The front R32 brakes are heavy - 340mm discs help save a bit of weight. Ali wishbones helped on mine after the R brakes....

Did you keep all the autolevelling / washer gubbins from the donor car??

Thanks Dave, yup I now have the lighter wishbones and solid bushes front and back, just need to fit the solid engine mount and we're laughing. I'd consider the 340s but these discs are only a week old. have you a build thread Dave?

Spot on Dave I'll check that out, I sent your two trims today btw so you should have them in a few days. They're in tip top order.

Quick one for anyone reading, what kind of mpg's are you guys getting? Around the town driving I'm getting close to 18 litres to 100kg which roughly works out 14-15mpg. Is this normal enough? Longer trips I see 10-11 litres to 100km which roughly works out to 24mpg. When I first got the car I was seeing 6-7 litres to 100kg, maybe I'm driving it harder or could the mods effect this and a remap might sort it out?

No update on this really bar enjoying her!

Thanks to FabFreddy I replaced the pcv valve with the Rev R, next on the list is hopefully fitting the turbo back Milltek this week and Powerflex dogbone mount. I'm on the lookout for a Loba hpfp if anyone knows of one going before I go new.

Went out for a burn with two of my buddies the other morning, that bike really moves!!

Hi - two great looking cars. The breaker is fantastic!

Tried to PM you but since I'm pretty new around here I can't... I have a GTI with the cream interior too but it has a factory fit mobile phone holder which has been fitted to the cream trim around the glove box - don't suppose you still have that part and if so how much??

Hi Dave, I hope all is well?

Thanks, appreciate the kind words, the steel grey one is rough around the edges and had nearly double the mileage, it was fairly well spec'd though, so she lives on in my tornado Golf. I do indeed, I'm open to offers, I have whatsapp if you want to contact me there? 00353877641555

Got around to darkening the honey comb grilles yesterday, over due big time! Took apart the front grille and fog inserts and gave them a coat.

Last thing on my list before the remap is a Rs4 relief valve and hpfp, so should have these in the next few weeks all going well.

How did you blacken the plastic inserts?

Mine could do with some TLC.

Thought about VHT black gloss but was worried about flaking.
