Hi guys, hopefully someone can help...
How can I get my standard head unit to play music from my phone?
Is there a socket in the read where I can buy a cable to go direct to my phone? Is there actually a aux option?
Thanks in advance......

It all depends on which radio has been installed and also can depend whether the Bluetooth module was installed etc.

Hmmmm ok, so is there an easy way of finding this out?
There’s no aux selection etc anywhere as far as I can see...

Take a picture.
Or do you have the radio manual?

Should be within the main manual for the car.

RCD500?

You will need a Bluetooth module if I reminder right, which will also connect your phone.
I had the radio, but removed it for a RNS510, so I could have navigation.

I got some after market bits can’t remember part numbers as it was a long time ago, but if you search on here, google or bing it you will find the right answer. I think i used a Parrot bluetooth module with a module to connect into the car.
Unless you get the VW Bluetooth module, if you have the MFSW, but costs up to £300! I which I did after upgrading my radio. Wanted to go OEM.

Ok mate thanks. Don’t have the mfsw.
So the Bluetooth plug and play things on eBay etc don’t work?
-
Not really sure on which eBay offering your talking about mate, but do just a little research on it and I’m sure your have the information you need. Sorry I don’t have all the answers I would have to look it up myself.

Try PM Pashka on here pal. He's usually got RNS of various flavours for sale and is very helpful with advice for fitting too.

Ok mate thanks :happy2:

I managed to find my old Bluetooth, so have taken some pics of the model etc, but remember I’ve got the mfsw, so this may not be the right connector.

RCD310 can take an aux-in as well as a BT module. Only 50 quid from ebay and looks a lot better than the ancient standard RCD300.
I actually got rid of an RNS510 in favour of an RCD310. Phones do satnav, and phones boot up instantly, unlike the RNS. They are overrated, overhyped and overpriced stereos imo, and scumbags nick them. You need stupid MDI & BT modules to do anything with a phone....and the modules date very quickly because of the crazy pace of phone development and BT versions.
RCD310, MK6 chrome switches, aux in socket, 3.5mm to 3.5mm lead. Done.
-
Ok this sounds like the best option.
So literally old head unit out, 310 in and aux cable from the rear of the unit to my phone?
Not even bothered about Bluetooth.....
-
Yep, it’s exactly what I do. Search ebay for ‘aux-in MK5 golf’ and for a few quid you can get a kit which includes the loom for the radio, and a socket to replace a blank next to the TC button :happy2:
-
Oh even better, so just plug the cable in where the blank was, not even into back of the head unit?
-
You need to connect the loom to the back of the radio. When you want tunes from your phone, simply flip up the ‘aux’ cover and plug 3.5mm stereo lead in. Then select aux on the radio, job done!

-
Right, bought the head unit and cable.......
soooo easiest way to get the cable from the head unit to the blank socket?
-
Select aux via the “media” button?
Sorry if I sound a simpleton!
-
Yep, via the Media button chap :happy2: It remembers it as well, so you don't have to keep switching from source to source every time you start the car
When you take the old radio out, also remove the gear stick panel with the switches and blanks, you will then see the best way to route the harness :happy2:
Oh and be very very gentle when prying the stereo trim/HVAC panel off the dash, the clips break off super easy. If you do break the panel, it's not expensive to replace.
