Title: Jay's Jolf "GTI"... with a 1.9.. and 221bhp.
Post by: xjay1337 on April 03, 2013, 11:16:07 am
Right well bear with me as this is going to be a bit of a cut and paste special combining several years of work..

Setting the scene...

So I needed to buy a new car... Unfortunately I had no real cash, my only asset was a 6 month old Street Triple R that I had owned from new, which cost me over £10k. For those into their bikes, it had every single factory option you can get, from the twin arrow cans to arrow rearsets, Triumph race levers and quickshifters - It was my dream bike and every day I regret having to sell it..
I was also the youngest person on a Street Triple R at just 19 (I'm 21 now) I had to also balance costs as I was private renting as I live independently. I really don't know how I managed lol.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg214.imageshack.us%2Fimg214%2F8562%2Fpa080056.jpg&hash=ca8dc732571684f256bcff8231558dffea233681)

So with a tear in my eye it was stripped back to *nearly* standard, sold, and the aftermarket parts were sold to raise additional cash.

I then trekked up to Manchester after a month of searching for the right car... to buy this.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg22.imageshack.us%2Fimg22%2F4195%2Fp3230090.jpg&hash=2ddc5002f618dfc2f16b710707ec6bf4d060a3a5)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg823.imageshack.us%2Fimg823%2F968%2Fp3230094.jpg&hash=d12c64ba8c40daa19e04200f80c5c6c8148b7e15)

Nothing special.. Just any old regular Mk5 with a full service history, and I also got the cambelt and other vital organs swapped as part of the terms of sale.

I started off on the slippery slope that is modding, by firstly fitting an iPod kit. It took me a while to "get into" the scene but now it's safe to say I'm firmly there.

The first "proper" mod shall we say was when I sprayed the engine, battery and fuse box cover.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg35.imageshack.us%2Fimg35%2F6886%2Fthe3musketeers.jpg&hash=d51b6ac04df46bf1b65dedc8b77345dc9183065e)

At the time I did not realise you could actually split the main engine cover...  :congrats:

After doing some research into diesels prior to buying the car, I started to understand the potential of a remap and my choice of company was naturally R-tech.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg688.imageshack.us%2Fimg688%2F8530%2Fimg00362201102261114.jpg&hash=3080d9bcd0772481fff2e22b7171ab3b279a1647)

Which took me to 149bhp and 264lb ft of torque.. quite a jump and it felt like a completely different car. I also got much better fuel economy which was a brucie-bonus.  :jumpmove:

I then started on the chassis by lowering it with Eibach Sportline springs.

Before:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg577.imageshack.us%2Fimg577%2F4863%2Fimg00540201106060821.jpg&hash=bfc8c5d3abe7cadef2ec9ca886fe18515a077499)

After:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg694.imageshack.us%2Fimg694%2F5053%2Fimg00546201106070839.jpg&hash=9335fb2d466fb3f97adfb01a929c83add75cab8c)

I was on the look out for a new set of wheels but I wasn't really interested in the typical BBS LM reps so waited around and ended up buying some A3 Sport alloys for £105, with 3 decent tyres (Michelin Primacys and a Conti Sport 2) and one budget. On Ebay I bought a part worn Conti Sport to match the existing one, and on the way back from collecting the alloys, I had the tyre shop I bought the tyre from to swap them over at no extra cost.

Which gave me this:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg27.imageshack.us%2Fimg27%2F8760%2Fimg0025fb.jpg&hash=0d5163efb595ffeff5a8b54497eb866813a63e9e)

They were in dreadful condition and to fund a refurb, I sold my standard 15 inch alloys which all had Goodyear Tyres (as I do not believe in budget rubbish) for over £230, so I ended up quids in really.

Result of the refurb...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg32.imageshack.us%2Fimg32%2F5301%2Fimg0638zk.jpg&hash=aaa26c02597812a5c621eaeaa4f8521ceb269b01)

You might see a box for some coilovers in the background - Well we'll get to that later.

I fitted a GT rear valance in preparation for a tasty 'Zorst....which can just about be seen here.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg836.imageshack.us%2Fimg836%2F7259%2Fimg0040q.jpg&hash=c84f2526325a314fe26911548ebba4cb4270f4cd)

I began looking to upgrade my lights and while I liked the look of the OEM Xenons, I realised that they were actually quite common and so I looked elsewhere..
In the end, I bought some Hella Celis which I got for a bargain price brand new from Ebay..  :drinking:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7059%2F6976813179_fa6c0f571e_b.jpg&hash=57f553d7a5d1deeb9e5c7c13a6bf2982419a53dd)

As my care of the car grew I started getting into detailing and started beginning to really look after the car and the paint. It also sparked me doing favours for family and friends and they would often provide me with a little monetary Gift for my efforts.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg69.imageshack.us%2Fimg69%2F1906%2Fimg0329zg.jpg&hash=727a9c8886d111d7dfd0e43baf2409a4e3eee63e)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg210.imageshack.us%2Fimg210%2F7493%2Fimg0011ti.jpg&hash=af21612ed076ba7df1b2d95e344809e795b890de)

As at the time I worked for very little money that was about it for a while...

Winter came along which also brought Christmas...
Before long, and I thought it would be funny to go a bit crazy. So I bought some Passat B5.5 alloys, which were very similar in design to my standard wheels, and sprayed them orange in a borrowed Garage.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg849.imageshack.us%2Fimg849%2F7762%2Fimg0551j.jpg&hash=322c8778c7b535171eeff235fecbc6502fa0e91c)

You might also see the Cupra R splitter which I had fitted as well, which sort of brought a little something extra to the front end.

I was given a Sat-Nav for Christmas, bearing in mind I have Nav on my phone... so I took it back and got the cash, and bought a highline cluster from Eddie which he fitted in his usual top-notch style.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7183%2F6830705370_37035bc97c_b.jpg&hash=5725c534a42ac2188fa29339d724fa4f08c994e5)

I also fitted with the help of a mate, some coilovers. They are just JOM but perfectly adequate and got me a little lower.. I can't justify £800 on some coilovers.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg11.imageshack.us%2Fimg11%2F7607%2Fimg0535qn.jpg&hash=b595dc397824aad817b2335df70733f0a1a467e4)

I also fitted LED interior lights throughout and I had also fitted a Newsouth Boost Gauge to monitor boost levels.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7036%2F6830929648_e5561eaa70_b.jpg&hash=60953f6da443a9cdd7de54a2aeb9b993b8e0b4d9)

Further to that, I painted my wheel nut covers, again in the borrowed garage, and fitted some uprated discs, pads and painted my calipers, shields and hub centres which were previously rusty and a bit mank, with some Hammerite.  :signLOL:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg818.imageshack.us%2Fimg818%2F2881%2Fimg0816n.jpg&hash=69dd97913a6deb773a1013aa44792d51cc122dc4)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg545.imageshack.us%2Fimg545%2F4948%2Fimg0834v.jpg&hash=6859d1033c745a5c317457617075def8fb0fa9bc)

I did a little video documenting Ultimate Dubs 2012 and with a bit of my car just around my local area - which you can watch here if you were so interested (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEW5qO6aY5o&hd=1)

And that's Part 1...

Starting to get expensive...

So carrying on with Part 2..

With the return of the warmer weather, and the removal of the winter wheels, I put on 20mm H&R rear spacers and brought my A3 wheels back out for some summer fun.

(before the eagle eyed viewer spots it, I did the above brake caliper painting AFTER putting the spacers back on..  :ashamed:)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg196.imageshack.us%2Fimg196%2F2678%2Fimg0654gr.jpg&hash=b8555b39b0c62abd6d416c488a0e543ccf713aac)

I was in between jobs for a while, due to a falling out with my employer at the time over pay and conditions (I was an IT networking and wireless engineer regularly going out to customer sites) on £15k a year... so I think I was right to fall out with them, so I was temping at Dominos for a month until my new job started.

While I was giving the car a once over I noticed the typical arch rust that plagued so many cars..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg137.imageshack.us%2Fimg137%2F6944%2Fimg0750hw.jpg&hash=b0de7de4ea0de0fd87f8567661e416766644a83d)

After arguing with what seemed like the most inconsiderate and rude woman from VW over a period of days, I eventually got 100% goodwill gesture and it was repaired and the arch liner modded.

Piper put up a feeler for a car to develop their cat back for the 1.9 TDI platform on, on uk-mkivs (which is my "go-to" forum shall we say, I have nearly 10k posts over there) and I was luckily first to the finish line.
I ended up with a free 2.5" Piper cat back system sounded pretty good!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg338.imageshack.us%2Fimg338%2F8780%2Fimg0805eq.jpg&hash=c068b7d6e6c2c9d412db0733f5d8f12129902e26)

And a sound clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNKRxxt0_aU).. ignore me faffing around with the camera at the start of the video.

I thought I'd tidy up the exterior and sort a few bits out underneath so I bought some proper rear LED numberplate lights (the whole units) which are great, new top mounts, drop links, and Vredestein Sessanta (http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/4452/img0882wo.jpg) tyres which I have ended up sticking with religiously as they are that good.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg545.imageshack.us%2Fimg545%2F5320%2Fimg0877p.jpg&hash=ed1a3034a157f340f71dfe7d4dfc2118a3dfae47)

I was around at the right time in the right place, and managed to get some R32/S3/A3 8P 3.2 V6 front hubs, discs, calipers, carriers, lines, etc.. basically everything to convert my 50mm hubbed 280mm shod front end to the full 55mm hubs with 345mm discs.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdistilleryimage2.instagram.com%2F01fcbaa6a1df11e1be6a12313820455d_7.jpg&hash=b831df0250b62b4507351c17611d3d5b64917626)

I also nabbed the front seats from the A3 which were a little more supportive than the standard seats, and matched the interior pretty well..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg836.imageshack.us%2Fimg836%2F6292%2Fimg0898cv.jpg&hash=85b7f72dc893f21a17cde35a806e246b9253834a)

I bought a set of GTI pedals for £50 brand new (they are often on Ebay from the Czech Republic... but they came wrapped in VW parts with genuine part numbers and stamps so they are all genuine).

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fvr-division.com%2Fimage%2Fgtigli%2520pedals.JPG&hash=b3346ae5caf4278a3f97e0ef3e961797f269ed30)

Unfortunately some little sh*te decided to lob a brick or a rock at my car which dented one of the side pillars and put a big gash on the window.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg36.imageshack.us%2Fimg36%2F6608%2Fimg0979hm.jpg&hash=7824847b544a34c539375ad384f4780139b6454b)

I bought a replacement one from Ebay however, it was a different colour so I took all of the side pillars off and wrapped them all to match.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg403.imageshack.us%2Fimg403%2F2307%2Fimg0983mu.jpg&hash=76404a1be76bae0fa452a75025408de8ea640a2d)

Yet more vandalism when a "friend" decided he'd jump on my bonnet which creased it..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg688.imageshack.us%2Fimg688%2F2425%2Fimg0941da.jpg&hash=1b19de27bcdaabb47c4b4e73d2fd20ca78b4acec)

I gave a local Dent Devils repair man a call following some good recommendations and it was on a "no fix no fee" basis.. he did manage to fix it luckily.

And here's the dent gone.  :innocent:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg708.imageshack.us%2Fimg708%2F6010%2Fimg1002ya.jpg&hash=7c5aa90da37e2f028201ad429f18c8db0b051d16)

I bought a genuine Jetta bumper and trimmed it to fit the pre-facelift car without having to fit new radiator carriers and front crossbeams.. I then had it freshly sprayed by my local friendly bodyshop.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg849.imageshack.us%2Fimg849%2F4148%2Fimg1005lo.jpg&hash=6596caabc28e18a2cb51fc5ed59478f09628da73)

On the way to pick some grills up I had my first and so far only breakdown, which was a boost hose popping up. Unfortunately I had no tools and the hose was ruined so I had to call Mr AA.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg4.imageshack.us%2Fimg4%2F8981%2Fimg1012gq.jpg&hash=aecb848c48122760094631bd692b2dc39ca62f0f)

On the plus side, we took a road trip with a mate and I picked the grills up... which I also had to trim to clear the rad-support.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg338.imageshack.us%2Fimg338%2F559%2Fimg1014hw.jpg&hash=8b14ef8b0e05729b3009d601edacfc65900d77ef)

With the help of my best mate (pictured), while the car was in the local garage waiting for a boost hose, I decided to swap the front end in the car park..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg687.imageshack.us%2Fimg687%2F7461%2Fimg1018fu.jpg&hash=49629043644f14d8d668b1b1ff5c12ceb53200a5)

And the finished result...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg441.imageshack.us%2Fimg441%2F6318%2Fimg1022k.jpg&hash=c25ee8dac00ca265be61dac2fd879f80c51b4744)

I had a matching black badge on order from Eurowagens as it was of course different from the pre-facelift grill.

And a picture from GTI International while I did an appalling time of 17.3 on the strip, due to the crappy, greasy surface in the morning and wheel spin in 3rd.  :signLOL: :signLOL:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm6.staticflickr.com%2F5338%2F7442916680_a17215f133_b.jpg&hash=f737a9fd5b97aa5c058ecd9342b0b77212ee2ff4)

I slowly began sorting out some extra power... I got some PD130/ASZ injectors which flow more fuel than the stock PD105 injectors.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg707.imageshack.us%2Fimg707%2F8953%2Fphotomsz.jpg&hash=af38ad96cc7e4a5caeb5b900b865f0cba0fba51e)

It was by now MOT time and the front LCA bushes were all shot so rather than faff around with new bushes I just bought GTI arms with new bushes

Which were kindly fitted by a mate.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg805.imageshack.us%2Fimg805%2F9886%2Fimg1115gm.jpg&hash=86665d1f9b5896445e96f2f985e56db6e6ccf50a)

And of course the obligatory tracking being done the next day.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg12.imageshack.us%2Fimg12%2F5162%2Fphotoqjh.jpg&hash=77c0e2a23b89ada749a31f8f3ee51a27f90a05c9)

And a pic from when I spent the day with a "car fwend, ohhhh!"

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FBuIld_Thread%2FGolf_Day%2FIMG_0018.jpg&hash=aa0a7a6dde0b90fbeafaea75cc15fc502d643548)

After replacing a rear caliper whichruined a set of pads in two months (http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/4552/img1256j.jpg) because it was sticky... or should I say seized.. I took the time to properly detail the wheels which had not been cleaned properly for a while.. which I was very ashamed to admit.

Quite a few pictures but you can read about that here (http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/p/426503/3384888.aspx#3384888)

I also gave the car a full detail the following weekend resulting in paint that looked like this;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg404.imageshack.us%2Fimg404%2F3453%2Fimg1354oq.jpg&hash=58d0945952530b91c9919a2dd63bd98d85f97f46)

And a car that looked like this;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg407.imageshack.us%2Fimg407%2F1813%2Fimg1355tx.jpg&hash=6f2e63c887fe28ccf8a3d9f31c334a3950afc009)

I found a US Spec GTI Cluster which I had fitted and coded which I really like.. The only reason for upgrading to the GTI cluster over my existing highline TDI was so I could have illuminated needles...  :star:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F25.media.tumblr.com%2Ftumblr_maq3tht6bH1qbr3dvo1_1280.jpg&hash=d9e6ea327dff44283660394756daf29fd1ee5890)

Then things started going downhill....quite badly.

After tyre shops and from many trips to mechanic mates for tweaks and changes the wheel nut covers were starting to chip...

I stupidly curbed a wheel which I was kicking myself about.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg542%2F7220%2Fimg1428e.jpg&hash=566f6c153859cf92b822f6bb3411ba7677445e42)

Then as I was moving into a new house with my girlfriend the car was keyed outside my mothers house overnight.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg24%2F5840%2Fphoto1kqw.jpg&hash=e77fc69ad389bcce34c636f84eb3b0bdb8fae5f2)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg405%2F5655%2Fphotohv.JPG&hash=7b9b4d676349b3c6a7cb3aaa27fc35c92375dac8)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg100%2F3760%2Fphoto2wo.jpg&hash=cf770e119f6d9090c49eaa7b76647da54400cc73)

I was going to buy new wheels (some 3SDM 005s) as I had changed jobs and basically had two months salary in one but obviously that went to pot. I felt pretty bad. To top it off me and my girlfriend then broke up in the same week.. Talking about quadrupple whammy.

Time to man up.

So onto part 3.

I left you previously in pretty much the lowest point of my life previously, everything I cared about was either leaving or being damaged or vandalised.

After sulking for a few days, I managed to buy 20 litres of screenwash for £8 (http://imageshack.us/a/img713/2027/img14681g.jpg) which surprisingly perked me up, no idea why..  :jumping: so I thought chin up, let's carry on with life and sort things out.

So rather than buying wheels or giving up on the project, which I was seriously considering, I threw all the spare money I had at the car and got the wheel refurbished and all of the paintwork done.
The car went into paint the following Wednesday following the keying (t happened on a Friday night) so I spent no time messing about.

I picked the car up and it looked beautiful once more and was getting back to the condition I always kept it in.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg689%2F8643%2Fimg1452hp.jpg&hash=567084c1b6b8d2d28d37b5f439d73b057b5d77f5)

I switched the look up a little and smoothed the front grill and began to run it US-styley

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm9.staticflickr.com%2F8049%2F8109650863_08e0918c23_b.jpg&hash=28595f9727fbf4704b8b859cc897ea7e05fae2d3)

Remember the ASZ injectors that I had lying around for so long? Well a friend (no longer unfortunately but still owe him a shout out for this) swapped my injectors over, set the correct clearances on the cam and injector lobes, and I had instantly a whole load more power, a lot of clutch slip (I had put a normal single mass conversion in by now) and a whole load of smoke!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg526%2F4159%2Fimg1477tx.jpg&hash=6b928f5d91c9a4398ec794072731520616acc071)

I then took it to a local tuner for a map tweak, as R-tech were not willing to work on the car with the PD130 injectors. I had more plans but needed the smoke reducing for the few months it would take...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg443%2F6910%2Fimg1498a.jpg&hash=894d671f6b073f08f210c45e2b8058d119a24480)

Which left me with just over 170 bhp.. not bad from a 105 with a stock turbo at 139,000 miles.

Started on a few rough edges, first being the wheelnut covers... so I bought some nice VW ones to match the rest of the colours on the vehicle.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg202%2F217%2Fimg1521igb.jpg&hash=1749107168f82adb69e610ee733de51904ee9a05)

I ticked over to 140,000 miles as well which is quite a bench mark to be honest especially on a stock and original turbo.. I do take credit for it, always allowing the car to warm up and cool down appropriately and servicing every 10k without fail.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdistilleryimage4.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fdb50e9fe37d411e2807c22000a1fba57_7.jpg&hash=72fb7e6631d6cba4fad42c56b8bd7eca5e9f1636)

To prepare for future increases in power I bought front and rear Whiteline Anti Roll Bars, which are 3 way adjustable, and arguably the best out there. I also had the oil and filter swapped and fitted a subframe spacer kit to stop the silly creaks and rattles from the front end.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg194%2F7609%2Fphotoweb.jpg&hash=063339fb1c9398b7e7b1277affd05fe785cdf4d0)

Another road-trip to Eddie landed me an Arm Rest which does match the trim (it's just the iPhone photo which makes it look like it doesn't)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg845%2F9185%2Fphoto4zu.jpg&hash=deba0626933378560d76cb2e0cd43429e8b523a5)

And a very very dirty car, which I jet washed clean at 10pm in a local petrol station.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg40%2F5820%2Fphoto3amx.jpg&hash=9c567d1d7d6f5f239bcc2c1a25223a397905063a)

I then began trialling a few car sealants, doing a little more in the way of detailing, while sorting out a new clutch...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg594%2F7020%2Fimg1650y.jpg&hash=a4faa0c3f97a90aefbd0e7e1722afcd190739ed8)

After a whole load of trouble which included being sent a clutch kit that fitted but wouldn't disengage the clutch, meaning doing a clutch swap at 3am so I could get home from London....I finally got the right clutch kit I needed, which was a custom flywheel with a G60 friction disc and an uprated pressure plate.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg839%2F5395%2Fimg1659zn.jpg&hash=9662593dd7c2c57bf477da4608e6549018468ca7)

(The JLS mug is not mine, leave it out).

I then took the opportunity late one evening to go out for a pretty raggo drive, the whole schebang... unfortunately I also got a puncture.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg59%2F3634%2Fimg1661p.jpg&hash=d75b228e3b0c7907841cbecf87d5cae5f07a51af)

So I had to put the space saver on to nurse me home.. unfortunately the tyre was buggered but I had a spare Dunlop laying around at home which went on and I will be replacing both rear tyres next month.

On Boxing Day after going out for a meal I was driving home and a terrible clunk developed, luckily I was only a few miles from home so nursed it back expecting to find a loose drop link in the ARB or that the securing nut on the coilovers had worked loose but instead I found this..

You can read about that in more detail here.. (http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/p/426503/3472090.aspx#3472090)

Which was not cool... new coilovers under warranty and that was that one fixed.

I began replacing all of the IC hoses and seals in preparation for an upgrade...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg577.imageshack.us%2Fimg577%2F2984%2Fphotozdzs.jpg&hash=dff5e5e9d675a8a3434cb110ed82884850514ddf)

My iPod kit decided to stop working so I replaced it and also gained another brucie-bonus that is charging of my iPhone!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg221.imageshack.us%2Fimg221%2F8372%2Fimg1719ey.jpg&hash=5c84d0bd32cad12e7781e193ad4f8f4e3c1138b4)

So after months of talking and changing what I wanted and sorting dates out I finally had something aranged...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg89.imageshack.us%2Fimg89%2F4459%2Fphotonqi.jpg&hash=a9a1e978317836bd96987a47da49240377172543)

I went to Darkside Developments who are highly regarded as one of the best VAG TDI tuners in the UK and bought a GTB Turbo Kit from them with a GTB1756vk with a Vacuum conversion.

Here's the turbo.

And here's the result.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg571.imageshack.us%2Fimg571%2F5242%2Fdarksidedynoresult.jpg&hash=e8dd64b2af93ccf52ca07453bc033d3f980679f5)

The car is on Darksides Website (http://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/golf-mk5-1-9-8v-bkc/) if you wanted to look which has a full kit list of what went into it;

I also have a video comparison of 30-70 in 3rd gear between my old circa 155-160bhp setup and the new setup with 221bhp, and I also had a hard cut limiter mapped in by the guys as well as the new tune being MAFless.

30-70 run (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fYWMTVjowM&hd=1)
Hardcut limiter and exhaust noise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV7i0ODgIgQ)

From a meet a couple of months ago.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm9.staticflickr.com%2F8105%2F8529628203_6fbab9cefe_b.jpg&hash=2160b8121b3da69cd6d3de6b8712f6959959e469)

I decided I was going to start the colour coding by having the front grill professionally smoothed and colour coded.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm9.staticflickr.com%2F8384%2F8565035234_700c036f4c_b.jpg&hash=72a354f3b6b63f377d95526c699691d94de43a96)

And a decent picture showing the US DRLs I have coded in with VCDS

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm9.staticflickr.com%2F8250%2F8612315779_d65a0569d9_b.jpg&hash=15313a1a54db8bfb791ae8bcb8c2d777b9848e67)
(above photo by simonleedsphotography.co.uk)

Very recently I fitted an uprated dogbone mount to keep the engine movement in check with the extra power..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg507%2F5605%2Fphotoig.jpg&hash=141939d470e7a6b98acdfe2d36a592b313a826ab)

And only yesterday after work I put my recently aquired R32 rear lights on... which really sort the back end out I think.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg405%2F8500%2Fphoto1dx.jpg&hash=53655f59f45ee99ed50c01158960b7bc77fb7c58)

And that's pretty much where I am with the project at the moment..
Got a few more things coming over the next months, wanting to colour code the rub strips, GTI skirts, R32 rear bumper (just need the lower valance really), Votex front splitter, new wheels and next year when the credit card is paid off, air ride will be coming.

Cheers for reading
Jay

Yeah, originally it's the classified that brought me here.. being a dieseler didn't really think much about posting but another forum can only be a good thing..

Thanks mate, no they only come in that colour. You can either split them and Joey-mod them yourself (I think one guy has done this before but I am too scared; I'd buy a spare set to do that) or you can just Lamin-X them.  :happy2:

Who did the map? Anything between 140 and 150 is about normal for these engines bud.  :happy2:

Yeah dude absolutely. It's very expensive after you get past a remap, you would need to uprate the clutch when going past around 160bhp as it will start to slip... you'd need to upgrade brakes, suspension, roll bars... On engine tuning alone I've probably spent over £4000.. as the clutch and turbo kit alone came to around £2600 in total, not forgetting the injectors and the other maps I've had over the years.  :scared:

What engine code is it ? Take it its not BXE ? Bit worried about taking mine further after whats been happening to some BXE engines

It's a BKC as the car is 04, I don't think BXE came along until later. I wouldn't worry about it bud, there's a Leon with a BXE on Darksides site, running over 260bhp and so far that's fine. I think it's like the old Mk4 PD150 camshaft issues... it just happens or doesn't happen.

Yeah dude it's definitely worth it. Their labour rates are pretty decent to be honest.

now this is what i call TDI tuning!

:happy2: I won't be pushing it much further at this mileage, only tweaking and refining what I have at the moment. I might fit slightly larger injectors to allow it to make the power with a lower injection duration but that's no great rush.

Cheers man. On Uk-mkivs because the build thread is like 45 pages of jokes and dogging references things get lost over time. I've had people think I just have a standard Mk5, they don't often realise the work and money that has gone into it. But hey, doesn't matter too much.

Hey buddy, that's not quite true. The PD150 and PD130 injectors are both the same, they have the same part number. The only difference engine wise on the PD150 over the PD130, was the fact it came with an OEM front mount and the turbos had slightly different internals.  :happy2:

great build thread mate.

Hey mate, I think it's around £270, if you go through UK-MKIVS (or just email Piper and say you are from uk-mkivs and saw the 1.9 TDI exhaust on Jays Mk5 and you wanted one) you'll get a discount and free shipping I do believe.

Holy crap that's a lot of work. It looks so much nicer! Might have been cheaper to buy a 1.9 170 and remap though  :P haha

Yes it would have but, I drive a mile and a half to work every day which would be no good for the DPF, even though it does get a run regularly. Plus the cost in terms of selling, and buying and then re-insuring would be quite high and the only thing stopping me from going to an ED30 or an S3 - Plus at my age, I can't even get insured on a base 2.0 140 for a reasonable price. Even with the mods and the power declared on my policy I'm paying under £1000.. a stock 2.0 140 is over double that!!

Also, where did you get the Hella Celis lights from? I can't seem to find them anywhere!

I think I mentioned it bud, Ebay. But they are very rare now indeed, almost impossible to find. There are some on German Ebay I believe (or at least there were, as I was looking into buying a spare set to split) but they are around £320...

What a great read! It's nice to see such a transformation from a standard car to what you have now without the 45 page thread to see the finished article.

Thank you very much buddy. Haha, yeah, that's the only downside I suppose. A lot of discussion/banter/random stuff goes on uk-mkivs which adds character though, so I don't mind.  :driver: :driver:
I've recently bought a few bits of bodywork and hopefully will be buying some more if the guy gets back to me, and will be able to update with some exciting new additions soon.

I got more stuff tucked away in other bags and drawers.  :signLOL: :signLOL: :stupid: :popcornsoda:

What's on the car there in that video is:

AutoFinesse Tripple topped with Collinite 476s (following a full paint decontamination, light refining and a pre-wax cleanser of course).
The glass is wearing Dodojuice Supernatural Glass Sealant, the glass was clayed and wiped down with IPA prior to application.

Yes I'm pretty sad.

Lol, luckily I don't have another half to have to worry about.
You think that's bad, I got a full set of front and rear lights, a clutch kit, centre console, EGR, EGR cooler, various pipes and connectors, original basic dash cluster and 3 spoke steering wheel in my bedroom.. it was only a few weeks ago I had a turbo and manifold being used as a door stop.

Thanks  :happy2: I have had a look through your thread as well, I must say it's pretty nice.. and the colour is great.

A few issues with bodywork, as a valance I bought unfortunately broke while removing, however I was refunded by the seller (on here, thank you Jonny). I have fortunately managed to source another GTI valance posted for £40... let's hope an omen doesn't curse that one.

I'm trying to get an ED30 splitter, news on that to come, with any luck I will have it tomorrow, otherwise I will have to wait until a few months down the line and I will buy one new.

It's my 22nd Birthday in May (woop woop) and so I have asked for GTI Skirts, which I will get painted as well.. then along with the rest of the colour coding going on, I would get the door handles and rub strips done.. quite excited over what's to come over the next few months.

Looking forward to GTI Springfest next Sunday, I will be aiming for a 14.xx, having known what a friend run in his tuned diesel, and mine is just a little quicker than his, I think it's within reason.

I think the ED30 front valance (splitter) looks very, very good.
If you want to buy it new, this site might help: http://shop.ahw-shop.de/vw-golf-5-1k/aussenausstattung/stossstangen-und-spoiler/jubi-gti-30-jahre-frontspoiler-golf-5-jetta?c=1758
Follow the discounts and you may get a ED30 splitter at 200 EURO (like I did).
Best of luck!

Thank you buddy. Yes, I do miss the bike a lot.. kind of like a holiday romance in a way, as I only had it 6 months, and it was hidden away over winter for 3... I'd do anything to have it back.
Speed 1050 is a lovely bike as well! Tasty with the single sided swinger, plus the same lovely engine note. My Dad had a Tiger 1050, something about those engines which are pretty special..

Todays spur of the moment purchase was brought to you by Lucozade. (or rather the 4 bottles I drank before I went to sleep which kept me up, and meant I found it in the classifieds..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg442.imageshack.us%2Fimg442%2F5547%2Fimg1902r.jpg&hash=35d086003b4866a5ccd2ff3997bb235bdea0bffe)

MFD2 DVD. Bought it from DSG Steel, really nice bloke and pleasure to deal with.. Not jealous of the Civic at all...  :sad1:

5 minutes on the laptop with Vagcom and I got compass to display in my highline cluster and also route guidance, which was quite helpful.

Why did I go for an MFD2 over an RNS510?
Couple of reasons... firstly, MFD2s are far less desirable. Thus less likely to be nicked. They are also half the price.
Secondly, with my car being 2004/05 I would need to change the Can gateway thingy, to stop the battery drain, an addition £80 or so... A quick text to Eddie with a super speedy answer (thank you!!!) confirmed my suspicions that this would be fine with my existing hardware.
Thirdly, what does an RNS have over an MFD2 really? You can get it working as a DVD player if you really want it, the sat-nav guided me through London quite happily, I found it pretty simple to use after 2 minutes prodding around and it's really improved my audio quality over the RCD300 that was in there.

Although I think next renewal I will be looking to change, I don't like their call center and the waiting times when you do phone up.

My mate is with Admiral now on his Corsa VXR - He had a Corsa 1.7 SRI before, and with Admiral it was half the price of the 1.7... sometimes I think it's completely pot luck.
I can't really complain aside from the half-witted call centre staff.. I remember when I went to add the exhaust system originally, when I first had the Piper Cat-back, I said "I have a cat-back exhaust" and the woman goes "sorry what is that? a cab back? do you have a truck".

Cheers man
Yeah Edition 30 rear would be nice but it's costs vs looks. I was originally going for an R32 rear however that went a bit pear shaped when I actually thought I could afford it when I couldn't, the cost of the pipes would basically make it £500, the same as an Edition 30 rear..

Thinking of selling the wheels anytime soon?

Depends if I had another set... which is on the cards but the wheels I'm saving for are £1200, then the £500 for some decent rubber on top, so might be a while...  :signLOL::jumping:

On the strip today at Santa Pod.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm9.staticflickr.com%2F8120%2F8649980690_228bd9feee_b.jpg&hash=05d8a33b57c4d27f9321a335bd2210412e7c0fe7)

I think the best time I managed was a 15.4 or a 15.6, I found it really hard to launch, 2750 rpm and it would bog, 3000 rpm and it would wheelspin into oblivion.. Petrols are much more forgiving. Considering the track and conditions I am pretty happy with the times.

I was happy to go all day unfortunately my gearbox wasn't.

Also in the car park at Santa Pod..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm9.staticflickr.com%2F8241%2F8649979784_5f8f6e4073_b.jpg&hash=fa36d42e6856b303f367f3eeda1d51b1f9d3ce1f)

I now have a nice hole in the back of my gearbox where the diff deciding to sh*t it's loins out. Luckily it was out the back rather than into the clutch case so a near gearbox and we'll be rolling again.. Left the Pod at 3 to be towed to a local petrol station to avoid any odd questions, got home about 15-20 minutes ago.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm9.staticflickr.com%2F8120%2F8649980690_228bd9feee_b.jpg&hash=05d8a33b57c4d27f9321a335bd2210412e7c0fe7)

I think the best time I managed was a 15.4 or a 15.6, I found it really hard to launch, 2750 rpm and it would bog, 3000 rpm and it would wheelspin into oblivion.. Petrols are much more forgiving. Considering the track and conditions I am pretty happy with the times.

I was happy to go all day unfortunately my gearbox wasn't.

Also in the car park at Santa Pod..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm9.staticflickr.com%2F8241%2F8649979784_5f8f6e4073_b.jpg&hash=fa36d42e6856b303f367f3eeda1d51b1f9d3ce1f)

I now have a nice hole in the back of my gearbox where the diff deciding to sh*t it's loins out. Luckily it was out the back rather than into the clutch case so a near gearbox and we'll be rolling again.. Left the Pod at 3 to be towed to a local petrol station to avoid any odd questions, got home about 15-20 minutes ago.

darn what did i miss at the pod today? was it just a run what you brung day?

Well no point in whining about it, I felt pretty bad yesterday but when I got home then it was alright.. I was only waiting from about 3pm till 7:30 for the recovery truck...
Cheers for the kind words, and I have JOM coilovers. I wish it went another 10mm lower on the front but they are wound all the way down unfortunately. I would replace with some Apex RDX but I'm looking to get air ride after I've paid off the credit card at the end of the year.

I am looking into my options for a gearbox replacement - I can get a recon box with a 12 month warranty for £600 - Or ideally buy a lower mileage box (30-60k for around £400) - The upgrade I need is a 6 speed conversion from the 2.0 TDI - With driveshafts, starter, shift linkages and a new clutch kit, the parts for the 6 speed conversion only come to around £700, but the clutch to take the power I'm running would be another £800 on top of that...

I'm speaking to Darkside to see how much it would be to LSD my 5 speed with an uprated internal bolt kit, if that is around £700-800 then I would just do that.

Either way I can luckily afford to buy another gearbox with my salary when I get paid on the 26th.

I will just be detailing the car at evenings and weekends now to keep the love alive.

Yeah, cheers Andy!
I've spoken to Darkside, they tell me I can get a 6 speed box which will fit straight in with my current driveshafts, starter and will also take my clutch! So I will just do that.

It's a GQN box from a Touran apparently. My box that blew was the stock 5 speed GQQ code.
My clutch, shafts everything will bolt straight into the GQN so yeah.

Air sounds awesome mate.

Pricey clutch kit, who's it made by? Love the 6 speed idea.

Haha yeah hopefully I won't forget too many times. Apparently the gearing is a bit longer now so runs to 58 in 2nd rather than my current 54.. mmmm...

Air sounds awesome mate.

Starting to wish I bought air instead now lol. I'd happily take it to Show n Shine..
What clutch kit is pricey? The one I got? Around 600.. custom flywheel with Darkside heavy duty pressure plate and G60 friction disc.

That one, but with the pressure plate and friction disc it makes sense. Still what one are you going for? Obviously not an oem one?

The 6 speed box from a Touran is a direct bolt on replacement for my gearbox and will take my current clutch buddy. Which cost around £600. It's only 4 months old and not really done many miles, and should be fine (it obviously did a run or two while dripping oil out and didn't slip).

Sorry I should have clarified.  :popcornsoda: That's the only reason I am putting the 6 speed in otherwise I would replace with a normal 5.

The best upgrade would be the 2.0 TDI 6 speed as they are bolted and can take the abuse, but that's where you run into the clutch, driveshaft and starter motor problems - being that you need to swap everything out!

My mates t4 on the dyno, it was hugely overfuelling as you can see, still made 140 bhp and stupid amounts of torque for the sh*tty engine that is in the t4

Normally you want a smoke free map. It depends on the car or the map, tune or style that deems smoke. The Darkide Ibiza had nos and I suspect massive injector duration, with massive injectors it's only natural for a bit of smoke I guess.

Ahh ok, my bad  :ashamed: sounds good anyway. Is they any videos of yours down the strip? Is it as smokey as i imagine?

No worries bro! Only one vid so far I'll get a link later. It's not really smokey at all!

19 a bit too big for what I'd want mate, rather stick with my 17s for now, 18s on the cards though but that is getting further and further away with these broken bits that keep cropping up haha. There are some really nice Merc/Brabus wheels around, AMG Aero IIs for a start..

Today I got busy with the detailing..

The car was already on axle stands as I got started so first off, wheels all came off placed to one side.

What we were up against.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg823%2F816%2Fimg1932rb.jpg&hash=3a9b9c97de8043d2b723e5fb012de8de65f647b3)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg824%2F8343%2Fimg1930xw.jpg&hash=97d6986ff5b5ea09233ffbef9895cbdccadf4adf)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg823%2F8667%2Fimg1928vy.jpg&hash=eb2d0d538921a8cbf505d1b4a3083d6950953a58)

The paint is pretty darn good but the wheels had a fair few swirls in them..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg543%2F8378%2Fimg1927k.jpg&hash=09afefdff064baf3b03e0df76a429de32fba9ea9)

So onto the start of the clean... with all the wheels removed there was easy pickings for the arches. I attacked this first with Bilt Hamber Auto Foam followed by a thorough rinse, then Bilt Hamber Surfex HD diluted 1:10 in a double action hand sprayer, with a couple of detailing brushes and a larger brush for the arch liners themselves.

Rear before:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg189.imageshack.us%2Fimg189%2F3913%2Fimg1931w.jpg&hash=c351d953600b48bfe3066eb0eb2b43280a0b6ca1)

Front during:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg41%2F9591%2Fimg1934n.jpg&hash=6dccbcfee890ca45c2d687e85c967c28341e75cd)

Rear during:

Only got a pic of the rear finished but you can see the different easily.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg41.imageshack.us%2Fimg41%2F1184%2Fimg1935s.jpg&hash=c7c87ed1be4a3bd14e74beecaf6dc3ce23284e2c)

Onto the rest of the car now.

I snowed the car and let it dwell...

And jetted it off, followed by a single bucket method wash with Autoglym BSC - as I washed the car last weekend, and it's only been sat on the drive so not really dirty.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg32.imageshack.us%2Fimg32%2F879%2Fimg1920wj.jpg&hash=7071839f10d330d6f387f27068f2615e44141938)

I removed the bonnet lining... revealed me this..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg849%2F9356%2Fimg1938sl.jpg&hash=f5e03001b99d5431daa9b46edf57dc18caabbc32)

And after

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg845%2F1397%2Fimg1940cq.jpg&hash=71bfef6b94e89e12bfe41ebb186f14a45b651e48)

I'm aware of the oil cap being upside down  - Again tools of the trade were some brushes, a few old Microfibres and BH Surfex.

Wheels were completely decontaminated, using a mixture of Auto Finesse Imperial and Auto Finesse Iron Out.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg802%2F4598%2Fimg1937h.jpg&hash=28b294e6daeb722ec6312dab54bc26b15a67a30d)

....and polished, as from the before of the swirling above, and after.

G3 Scratch remover on a tri-foam hand pad with Auto Finesse Tripple as a topper, and coated with a double-helping of Colinite 476s.

I then buffed everything, applied Megs Endurance Gel and stuck them in the house for keeping overnight.

Then going back around the rough edges...

Boot hinges were looking mucky

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg10%2F1725%2Fimg1945iv.jpg&hash=77850d256bc9438d53c4fb05fd99103c3a0e5a6d)

And sorted

And hinges looking a lot better for themselves.

I called it a day at this point after 7 hours of working. Tomorrow I will be sealing the layers with 2 or 3 more layers of sealant, sorting out a few bits of bumper trim, re-painting the calipers and brake shields, and also painting the suspension arms as they are starting to get a bit grubby and it bugs me.

Anyway thanks for reading so far and check back tomorrow for more!  :P

Can you please tell us the products you used (or maybe PM them to me if it is more ore less a professional secret).
I cleaned my car this spring but the results were nowhere near (I don't think I am using the proper products)!

Nah it's all good.

I use too many products to list out really but some of the main ones are

Bilt Hamber Autoclay
Bilt Hamber Autofoam
Bilt Hamber Surfex HD
Autoglym BSC (any Ph neutral shampoo will do)
Auto Finesse Tripple
Auto Finesse Imperial
Auto Finesse Iron Out / Iron X
Auto Finesse Soul
Auto Finesse Crystal
Auto Finesse Finale
Collinite 476s
G3 Scratch Remover
G3 Super Resin Liquid Wax
Meguiars Endurance Tyre Gel
Variety of applicator pads (microfibre and sponge), brushes and wash mitts.

When I had a DAS6 I had Menzerna polishes (SF2500 is a pretty good go-to polish) and Hexlogic pads.

I got a picture of most of my collection a few pages back haha.

And here is what I got cracking with today...

First of all I got the help of my BFFL with changing the rear valance over...didn't get many pictures of this as it's incredibly fiddly..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg13%2F6416%2Fimg1955ff.jpg&hash=c2b1136b83fc6a314ebccb305c056e9c36988e86)

Everything given another spray down with BH Surfex at 1:20 and agitated with a brush, jetted off and any left over wiped off with a microfibre. Didn't get any finished pictures of this part but it was like new!

Onto the rest of the car..

Wheels/hubs/calipers..

You might notice on the spacer I had got some paint on when I painted my last set of discs - no great bother. Also the clips on the front calipers, I painted last time - I just went over these again, because I will be getting S3 caliper clips in the future so it's no fuss.. I would have removed and painted them silver but I didn't have any silver paint with me..

So out with the Hammerite, and variety of brushes.. Results..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg713%2F6863%2Fimg1957r.jpg&hash=b3cf6a15b897884aed1f87cda222daaca98ad9be)

While I am really OCD I didn't have time today to tape everything off, the little bit of over-brush I can live with on the hub face.. it's not ever seen anyway. The calipers were painted previously and I gave them a quick once-over to fill any chips and what not in. They are not perfect by any means but for now it's much better than nothing. :p

And the rears

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg202%2F8271%2Fimg1958k.jpg&hash=db9e2ef80d859dab2ae929f3363d5ba06b8aab6c)

Bit more awkward these ones, because if you paint too far on the back of the caliper you get paint on the sliders and they seize... :wall::wall:

Finally, gave the car a wipe down with Finale to remove the dust that had settled overnight, and another 2 layers of my new favourite wax...

All of the grills and the splitter given the trim gel treatment and everything was buffed off, leaving the finished pictures..

And the GTI rear valance fitted... I was waiting to get it painted, however since I'm £800 down getting this replacement gearbox, it will be at least another two months before everything comes to plan...

Well, after nearly 16 hours of work, my work is done. I'm really happy with how everything has turned out, knowing that it's been done now will hopefully mean when I come to do things in the future, it will take a lot less effort! Haha

Very impressive work here Jay, silver does come up lovely  :happy2: I may be ordering some of what your using  :drinking:
Is your smoothed GT grill sprayed or wrapped?
Only thing, prob stupid question. Why have you removed the over rider-thingys from the non fog grills?

Keep up the good work  :happy2:

Cheers pal. Yeah she's looking good. Go for it, haha!
The GT grill was sprayed mate, it's a pain in the arse to wrap (I did it twice already) and always bubbled in the corners because of the curve.

I've not removed them, I just haven't got them yet and haven't since I've had the bumper!  :signLOL: I'm trying to buy some replica bits off Ebay, but it's just not on the list of priorities at the moment..

Looks great Jay. I like getting jobs like that done. On my list to do.

I see you have some 20mm rear H&R spacers. Thinking of getting some for my Monzas, with the being 7.5, ET51 think would stick out to far? Or be ok? You running any spacers on the front?

Cheers Si

On the rear you will be fine.
On the front I would put a 10mm spacer on. I have no spacers on the front of mine bud.

A bit of bad news, I've just had an email from DsD who say the gearbox they've split has a damaged bell housing. They said I can use my existing bell-housing but I'm not sure what's involved in swapping the bell housing, or whether it can be welded as a repair.

I have gone back to them with some queries and hopefully will hear more today.

 :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: :sad1:

Just checked my gearbox and the bell housing is the part that has a hole in it.. so I can't even take my current bell housing off to use on the Touran replacement box.

I've emailed DsD, discussing a 2.0 - 6 speed swap but it's whether they can get the parts and for the cost I can afford.

I've priced it up on Ebay and it's around £650 with a (that's gearbox, starters, both driveshafts and a used DMF/Clutch kit).. A suitable clutch and single mass flywheel for my power is £925 + vat

I wouldn't do it now myself without having enough to throw at it incase bits don't fit, I can't go for another month without my car. I'd rather get the car up and running again with a 5 speed box and buy the 6 speed bits over a couple of months.

We'll see what happens over the next few days.

New plan.

Spoke to Darkside. We talked about a plan over the next month or two. They really are top lads. - For now they are going to refund my deposit (they offered that straight away all credit to them) and I will just get another 5 speed box to roll around in.

I could afford to do a 2.0 TDI box transplant but it would be with a clutch that's incapable of dealing with 365lb ft of torque, which is almost just as bad as the current box.

Over the next 4-5 months, I will just have to be careful doing heavy launches and I will be upgrading to a 2.0 TDI box with LSD, buying bits and pieces here and there.

Touch wood will be back on the road next week

nice to see someone having a go at modding the 1.9 engine, i have had a look but as you confirmed, its big bucks to go 200+bhp

very nice car though mate  :happy2: love how clean you keep it!

Thanks pal glad you enjoyed it. Yeah get a thread up I would like to take a look
It's worth breaking the 200bhp barrier definately, on a stock car Darkside would do it for around £2000+clutch+injectors, so to double your stock BHP it's not really that much in terms of £s per horsepower.. you could do it for less but it would be awkward in terms of finding parts, fitting them etc.

Yeah I am quite OCD haha  :surprised:

Something I kept quiet because I was embarrassed, when I detailed the car and was putting the wheels on I had the door open and as I'm an idiot I caught the door with the torque wrench and gashed the lower sectioni about an inch and a half long.

I wasn't too annoyed as I knew I would just get it repaired professionally, but my buddy Stuart let me use his touch up kit and this is the result.

Before

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg17%2F4418%2Fimg19811.jpg&hash=2479e6e20f3559612d90f38aa84350340199772f)

After

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg705%2F248%2Fimg19841.jpg&hash=f30ea8d96df4c314841aa9a0a980a194e94911d5)

I will still have it professionally done but for now at least it's presentable.

Wow! You've done some amount to this car. Credit to u for it.

Don't mean to pick but is that rust on ur sills where the wings meets? Might be worth trying to get it done under warranty from vw.

No mate it was a halfords one.. I had ordered the VW one but my buddy had the Halfords one in the car. I'll try the VW one as well and then give it to my friend.

Different people have different ways of doing it..
For me I took a piece of kitchen towel, and applied very thinly using the brush in the kit, which was actually very good.. very very thin at the end.

I'd then wipe it off with the kitchen towel.. and repeat.. and repeat.. It sort of seems odd but you want to basically bring the touch up out to as even as possible with the existing surface on a microscopic level.
And then of course with the lacquer. Same process again, I found the laquer was better to use as the colour match was not perfect from the touch up kit..

It's better to put too little on than too much. Don't forget if you do apply too much can use a wet fingernail to scrape the paint/laquer off the surface before it sets.. might want to keep a clar bar handy as well.

Thank you buddy much appreciated.
And yes it is, when I had the wing repaired I brought it up but was told as it's not from the "inside out" (I did argue but they weren't having any of it) it wasn't covered... I'm lucky I had the wing done!!

I'm considering having it sorted properly, just a bit awkward as the door and wing would need to come off to do it properly. Might just blow over it myself with a rattle can.

I think it's pretty common across the vag range tbh.

Wonder if u rattle canned it then used waxoyl in the gap it would stop it coming back.

Yeah that would probably work buddy, but I'm not really looking to bodge it, if I'm going to do it, I'd make sure it's done properly. Remove the rust, prime it and repaint it would be fine for years to come. :)

Anyway today was the day, some very good friends popped down to make it a bit of a car related day at my house.. No rush to get anything done but still made good time.. good laughs.

Driving again. Filled the replacement gearbox with fresh gearbox oil.
Everything seems much tighter, awesome job.

Dissembled the old gearbox for fun since it was scrap and found out what the problem was..

For fun we also got the car about 10mm lower by changing a bracket on the coilover strut at the front.. nothing bodgey or dangerous. But now got me sitting where I want it at the front, well happy all round.
