Title: Metallic tapping sound from engine when warm.
Post by: rob46 on June 07, 2018, 03:42:58 pm
Have a 2006 gti (tfsi) dsg with 73,000 fsh. When cold engine is sweet but as soon as it warms up you can hear what sounds like a noisy tappet. Sound worse on the n/side more like a diesal. Had the tappet renewed on the fuel pump still the same. Took it to VWS Exeter who removed the cam chain cover and camshaft cover, checked it out and all mechanically good. They suggested perhaps a sticking valve or noisy tappet however the car goes really well, ticks over evenly so doubt the former. A friend who is a VW technician replaced all the hydraulic tappets but still the same. I then took the car to Monnington Motors who are VAG specialists. I explained my saga to a technician who had been working on VW’s for 15 years and he told me that I was chasing the unachievable. Frustrated!!  Any comments would be welcome.

Check the Alternator clutch and aux belt tensioner as well. Although you say it's coming from the nearside, probably not going to be that.

Learn to ignore it like I did. Before I bought my gti I viewed a audi a3 s-line  and that was noisy just the same.

It will be the cam adjuster.  It comes in kit form, which includes the cam adjuster, chain, tensioner and housing.  I had mine done many years ago on a 2005 axx engine.  The symptoms are lovely and quiet when cold and then sounding like a diesel when warm.  It is more noticeable inside the cabin than head under bonnet.
