Title: Seans Graphite Blue GTI
Post by: sean.smithy94 on July 07, 2016, 06:30:46 pm
Hellooo,

I'm new to the world of golfs but so far im loving it, my previous car was a Honda Civic, fairly quick and felt like it was about to fall apart  :signLOL: the golf is soo much better in every aspect!  The golf has got a full service history, mostly vw but the later ones went to an independant garage, roughly 65,000 on the clock and im the 5th owner.  The thermostat was sticking open so got that sorted under warranty, touch wood i hope thats it for a fair while!  But so far its been good, love the colour too! Ive not seen many like it.

I am also an admin of a car club from South Wales if any would like to take a look, Status: Modified we are called and we have a group on Facebook

I do intend on modifying the car but dont expect fast progress  but i will update you as often as i can!

So heres a photo of my honda.

Now a few photos of the golf

I then decided to have an argument with the curb and my alloy lost

I then went on to changing the cam follower which wasnt worn too bad and upgraded the DV to the Revision G.

Not really an update, just a quick photo from when I attended Cruise Culture on Sunday in Carmarthen, the biggest modified car show in Wales.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh616%2Fseansmithy%2FIMG_0689.jpg&hash=605a007659f1eea8a93f6931196579d07147e317)

Not sure what route to go down next, do I go down the performance route first and leave the cosmetics till last? or do i make it look pretty and performance last? Decisions decisions!

Never realized that there was a show in Carmarthen, briefly went to Volkfest in Brecon on the Sunday, but was disappointed, it rained that weekend again!!!

Love the graphite blue :happy2:

I've only ever seen one G/B car here in Dublin

Where did you source the smooth grille? eBay? Quality any good?

Super expensive from VW :surprised:

Yeah  i went there last year and this year, this years weather was far better! it rained all day last year, its a really good show, indoor and outdoor show and shine, DJs all day, car competitions like car limbo, sound off, flame off and club stands  its normally the last weekend in August, the Sunday just before the bank holiday

I thought it was a rare colour in my area until i bought one, then a fair few more popped up and i have no realised its quite common, not the most common colour though by all means  xenonzuk i got mine from, you get the whole set of grilles, it cost me £85, there are ones on ebay for cheaper but when i bought one, i got refunded due to the batch being damaged, i got impatient and paid more for one  :signLOL:

the quality is alright, really not as good as i expected as the fit isnt quite 100% but you cant really tell unless you get close up, so i was happy overall, but theres ones on ebay for around £30

That's quite alright, people I know who have bought ones off eBay have been happy and for £30 roughly, it's not a bad price so if things arnt quite 100% you can justify it a little.

Yeah it looks good from a distance  just don't look at mine too close  :signLOL:

Little update, I gave in to my temptations and I bought an oversize ramair intake, can't wait for it to arrive! I'll get some photos and maybe some videos once it's arrived and fitted, can't wait!

Good times

I love my oversized RamAir. It's a bit of a pain to fit and at first I wasn't really sure about all the racket it makes.

But now I actually look forward to driving the car so I can plant it WOT above 4K rpm and just bathe in the sound!!

Enjoy :happy2:

It's being delivered tomorrow, I'm like a little kid at Christmas  :signLOL:

What problems did you come across when fitting it? And noise wise, I take it it's loud?  :happy2:

Make sure you put a clean rag in the top of the turbo once the original air intake is off, you dont want to drop any tools down there thats for for sure.

The kit should come with instructions, my Neuspeed did.

Hardest part for me was getting the old one off the turbo, ended up smashing myself in the face with the grips  :signLOL:

It's not too bad in all fairness. It's just that it was late at night and me and my friend were wrecked by the time we got to it!

Issues we encountered were....
1) The big heat shield tray (at the air filter end) didn't actually fit. We had to cut it down a good bit with a hacksaw. It must have been for an Audi or maybe a later model golf? Anyway some hacksaw attention and it fit a treat!!
2) There aren't any instructions for the heat shield that goes above the turbo. You need to remove the two engine cover bungs to uncover the bolt holes for the heat shield. Not hard but fiddly.
3) The bit of rubber pipe that the air filter attaches to was way too long and again required cutting down to size
4) There's lots of jubilee clips and they're proper fiddly :happy2:

If you go at it with a calm head nice and early in the morning I imagine it will be a LOT easier than approaching it after midnight with about 10 red bulls on board like we did

Noise wise - it's bananas!!
No induction roar like you get on a naturally aspirated motor. Just loads of quite loud sucky, hoovery noise until you pass 4K rpm at which point it just sounds great!!

I wasn't too sure I liked the noise at first as when you're cruising on a partial throttle it's a bit irritating. But I find it's all worth it when you open the taps!!

Anyways! I'm pleased with it :happy2:

Let us know how you get on!

Yeah getting the old turbo pipe off was a right pain in the arse when fitting my Revo! There is a rubber piece that fits to the bottom of the pipe that stayed on the turbo and had to remove that separately, that happen to you?

Enjoy the new intake! Do you get any squealing? I get some with my Revo intake but apparently all normal, only happens when putting my foot right down.

Yeah that rubber thing definitely needs to come out. Don't get any squealing with the RamAir. Can't really think why it would squeal?

I've read it's the tubo sucking in more air making a squeal, that or something isnt tight enough, going to give it a once over again at the weekend  :signLOL:

Helloooo!!! After a long 3 hours after work it's finally fitted, started around half 5 and finished around half 8, the instructions really arnt the best so it was 2 steps forward and many back sometimes  :signLOL: got it all done in the end though! Hopefully everything is secured properly  :signLOL: the heatshield at the back annoyed me, couldn't get it to fit right no matter how many times I tried, but settled with it in the end and I think it's okay, other than that went straight forward  :happy2:

Took it for a little spin then! I don't think it's too bad under normal driving but then when you plant your foot, it makes some lovely noises!

So overall I'm happy but I might go back again at some point and see if I can get the heatshield to fit decent, any tips on that side of things?

Well done buddy
Good times :happy2:

Funnily enough, once I'd uncovered the bolt holes for it, the heatshield went on pretty ok.

I did notice it deformed a good bit though as I was tightening the big P clip that holds the intake to the heatshield? Maybe that happened to you too?

In what way is it not sitting right?

Maybe i did the order of the whole thing wrong, I don't think it's rotated around enough so it's not sitting quite flat over the holes but it's not terrible, I just really struggled getting it in to the correct position.

But yeah mine has warped a fair bit too, so whether that's why it doesn't sit right but it looks alright till I get bored and faff with it to make it better  :signLOL:

Yeah. If you come back to it fresh another day I bet You'll get it to line up better :happy2:

For now just enjoy it and let us know what you think :driver:

Myself and r5gtt noticed poor fuel economy after we fitted our induction kits. Will be interested to see if you experience the same problem

Yeah I would have thought so, me and my brother started to get annoyed at the whole situation and it was going dark so in the end we just put it together as best as we could and called it a day  :signLOL:

I'm sure I will enjoy it but I shall indeed let you know how I get on with it  :driver:

Did your fuel economy drop drastically? I'll keep an eye on that and report back when I find out something
Title: Re: Seans Graphite Blue GTI - Update!
Post by: ducman77 on September 07, 2016, 08:11:31 am
Not really sure what caused my fuel economy to drop? I've had a dodgy coil, fitted a 3in turbo back exhaust and the RamAir since the car was mapped. So I'm not sure which if any of those caused the economy to drop. But it's definitely dropped a good bit. I got just 280mls from my last full tank :surprised:

I'm fitting a Peron Intercooler soon and then heading back to my tuner. I'll chat to him about it and I'm sure he'll be able to figure out what's up!!

Enjoy your new kit!

Also here is a quick photo I took of it fitted yesterday  :happy2:

Not posted in a while but I have an update, just not a good one I don't think  :sad1: I've noticed at slower speeds I can feel a little knock in the steering but as far as I'm aware I can't hear anything from the outside?

But the for worst one, I've noticed a noise from the gearbox area, the noise goes when I put my foot on the clutch but comes back when I take it off, there's like a what sounds like a clunk the faster you put the pedal down? My drivers seat can wobble from time to time and the gears can be a little notchy too, so I'm maybe thinking the DMF, the input shaft bearing or both?  :sad1:

I've never had a dual mass flywheel before so I don't really know what I'm listening for but I'm not liking where is going.

My friend works in VW and can get the clutch and flywheel done for £500, that could solve the gearing issues but won't know the full extent till the gearbox is off.  As far as the steering issue goes, I have no idea, but at the moment sounds like I'm up s**t creek without a paddle  :sad1:

Getting my car sorted also at the end of this month! still no idea whats what but im leaving it with my friend for a day or two to get it repaired.

On the plus side, after that ill be on the look out for some lowering springs! im thinking either:

Apex - lowers the car 35mm - £109.13
H&R - lowers the car 30mm - £180
Eibach Pro Kit - lowers the car 30mm - £170.88

decisions decisions!

I'm on H&R mate, recommend them. They work well with OEM shocks too, not crash or harsh.

Turns out my car isn't as bad as I thought which is a good sign, so I'm going to save up and then get it done, found out though my rear passenger caliper is binding, I've heard it's a common thing to go wrong so I'll be getting that sorted soon.

Next on the list for mods though is springs and get an r32 rear and exhaust, exhaust wise, I'm thinking of getting a bcs power valve r32 style cat back

Bulbs arrived today, but just my luck I bought 100w instead of 55w  so I have a set of bulbs for sale if anyone wants them.  I also bought some sidelights but I can't for the life of me get them out! So I've given up for now and I'll try again on Friday when the other bulbs come.

I'm on the Eibach Pro Kit - it's on a 2.0FSI but the drop is perfect (might be a little low on the ground-clearance front but that's because I've got the vortex kit on). Ride isn't bumpy or uncomfortable despite the lowering.

I almost bought it! Whilst I was still deciding you slipped in there and got it!
Bought myself a tornado red a few miles up the road instead.
Nice to see how it's come along, I love the colour!

Awh I snatched it up just before you, oh I love tornado red, got any photos? Thank you! It's slow and steady but it's coming along!

Awh okay, thank you, that's good to know, one of my friends had just bought FK springs, so depending on what they are like for him, I guess that's another option for me.

Heres a quick photo of my new sidelight and headlight bulbs! They are much whiter and really make the front end nicer at night, also got the us running lights now too, they come on the when the sidelights are turned on.

Sorry about the quality, crappy iPhone photo.

Also, my most recent purchase, an 8" android head unit, so far i have nothing bad to say and for £270 i cant complain, i wanted to keep the oem look and this stereo ticked all the boxes, dead impressed by it!  i would happily recommend it to anyone whos looking to improve the interior of their car.  a little before and after of the stereo.

Got some wind deflectors for Christmas so I'll get them fitted over the next couple of days, possibly when I clean it as I also got an auto finesse cleaning bag and a few more cleaning goodies to use!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fseansmithy%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20161230_212407.jpg&hash=25e4e3e523495373abb1b97d34f81c3a4b1a663a)

Also, how many speakers should my car have? As I only have one that works in my door along with the tweeter and then one in the back, which makes 4 speakers and 2 tweeters, does that sound right or wrong?

Love the colour, nice car! IIRC earlier cars had 10 speakers and later ones 8. Not too sure on that one though tbh  :happy2:

Thank you, oh I have absolutely no idea then! I want to change the switches and grab handles and I know the passenger door card has to come off so whenever I get round to changing them, I'll inspect what's there

Fitted the wind deflectors and gave it a good clean and a wax with auto finesse luxury car wax, came up lovely, no photos though unfortunately, back to work tomorrow though!

As for the service, i had the cam follower changed also so that's all good for a little while, they also realised that the outer front cv boot on the passenger side needs doing, along with new top mounts and front console bushes.  But for the bushes, I'm thinking of getting the anti lift kit as an upgrade.  :happy2:

It's just getting the standard one drilled out, with that and the res delete its sounds nice but not too loud, I just wanted it to sound like It should have from the factory, I'd recommend it :happy2:

Obviously if you can afford a new downpipe then do that, but this is basically free.

I already have a resonator or middle box delete, so should make it a little more fruity. I'll give it a go when the weather is a litlle less British.

@stacy2704 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=18669) ah fair enough! Yeah I'd definitely do it, it's a free or cheap enough mod to do with nothing but benefits

A little update, my mot is due at the end of April and I noticed I had a number plate bulb out, so I bought a whole set of error free leds for the number plate and interior, so that should freshen up the look a fair bit, hopefully they will arrive quickly!  new top mounts, cv boot and anti lift kit needs to be sorted for my mot also!

Got round to fitting my number plate and interior leds the other night, bye bye yellow and hello white! Looks much better in my opinion (excuse the dirty interior)

Got round to buying the powerflex anti lift kit last night to replace the worn bushes, going to get it fitted next saturday along with my top mounts and cv boot.

How are you finding it with the anti lift kit?

How are you finding it with the anti lift kit?

The ride at the front ive found is much harsher! Even the smallest of bumps can feel and sound horrendous in the car, I'm avoiding many more parts in the road now than I was prior to it being fitted, but it has helped no end regards wheel hop and stuff like that.

Still got a problem with a knocking/creaking when turning, it also happens occasionally when I pull off and come to a stop, it started when I had the springs fitted but when I got the anti lift kit fitted, found that it's got worse, I also had both front top mounts changed so it's not that I don't think, back to the drawing board and hope it's a cheap fix

So my plans for today went ahead  :happy2: got myself some bbs lm reps, they're second hand so aren't perfect but aslong as I maintain them they should be okay for a fair while! I'm happy with the look! Let me know what you think

Thanks @prp74 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6320)  and @SurreyED30 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=8478)  I've been unsure on what wheels to get for ages! These came up and I couldn't miss on the opportunity, was worth the hour and a half drive! They aren't perfect by any means when you get up close but overall I'm happy!

Thank you @spwd (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4339)  :happy2: loving the wheels but I'm finding the powerflex anti lift kit really harsh on bumps, I knew it would stiffen it up but not to the extent it has, looks like I'm drunk when I'm driving as I'm avoiding everything  :signLOL: I'm more concerned about my wheels as even the smallest bumps jolt the car  :scared: it probably feels worse than it actually is

Well I had the car back from the garage with not a lot of joy, for starters the noise didn't happen when he drove it, typical, i was told that all of the suspension seems good but when the car was in the air, the steering seemed heavier then it should be? Leading him to maybe believe that it could be a ball joint being the problem or the steering rack? Got it booked back in for next Tuesday so he can investigate further. Whatever is wrong I hope it's not too expensive  :sad1:

Thought I'd have a bash at restoring my headlight as it was letting the front end of the car down, for a first attempt it's not bad! Much better than it was, you can see faint sandpaper scratches if you look close enough, but overall I'm happy with the result.

Mods are on hold at the moment till my mot on the 15th, also need to decide what to do about replacing my steering rack.

I'm also off to spring action day at castle combe on Saturday, day off work tomorrow to give the car a deep clean  :happy2: anybody off here going?

Managed to get myself a second hand bcs downpipe and sports cat! It's being delivered next week, with me having a back box delete, how much of a difference is it going to make to the exhaust sound?
