Title: Tappys 50 shades of grey
Post by: TAPPY on January 01, 2016, 03:40:05 pm
We'll I have been on here a while now and thought I'd start a build thread as I have a little time on my hands, not too much going on just so I can keep up with any progress I make  :signLOL:

So here it was when I bought it.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimage.jpg6.jpg&hash=fb09b0d67b67d504de1ea75f94c93755ece20686)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimage.jpg4.jpg&hash=2e1ea08c8fd3398bf7a81614591008a10b143f1d)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimage.jpg2_1.jpg&hash=235ac05fe6c88d0b8c5892e02340f46e1b7bef26)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimage.jpg5.jpg&hash=9250b0517f059b67895ae00dfff23dac3102741c)

So as I have said before on other posts that I work in a bodyshop we had a customers car in for some work I decided to get the center part of my engine cover painted.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg34.jpg&hash=5a838fef8f801177cde8773102a95f9013363b3c)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg36.jpg&hash=1f1307f70785e45997a6460f693b2444139aa6ab)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg35.jpg&hash=f1a06ee8c6f14577edf9692f9be345d4dfffc1f4)
I had to wrap the vw badge though as I mullered it getting it off and managed to straighten it out but meant to get one of those sorted out.  :signLOL:

At this point I was having issues with it, we'll it just kind of felt sluggish and not as pokey as when I first got it and decided to get a newsouth boost gauge from awesome gti and installed it that weekend.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg1-2.jpg&hash=4652b85ea5bbd579f43cd1719c4b2a940a3e1cb5)

I found I was only getting 7psi of boost so reading up on here I decided together a new DV and spend a weekend sorting a few bits out.

So I ended up buying a DV+ from amd,a new pcv, gasket and pipe, cam follower and spark plugs.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg2-1.jpg&hash=cbd25b71d92dd9eb5f4f87816ed629d502e7163d)

So work commenced
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg4-1.jpg&hash=28070961d1a4df0aeec5da8a1c7adc44a59e08ed)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg3-1.jpg&hash=3ff012574c5cd70ea50c0bf704d073a72785a430)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg5.jpg&hash=5ec6d313691cc54a64fa11a936555364b89f63ac)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg3-2.jpg&hash=248f98cffb9c2e573b52cd23ff07266140f0c6d0)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg2-2.jpg&hash=47bc6e2d9b713daf924bc2e6a3c224778579a1c3)

Then onto the DV which as you can see is in a bit of a state.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg7.jpg&hash=ea0fc01cf0bf323b55be7f6838292b6c28e42774)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg6.jpg&hash=518a140f7ae6f26f9d0ea05623e81b3c071fda1f)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg8.jpg&hash=bf2bfb4a718a4ffe4f5b2241c7f5ca15746d93d0)

Now I started getting 10-12 psi and it felt better than when I first got the car. :driver:

We had a polo come into work which got written off so I managed to nab the aerial
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg1-3.jpg&hash=ae22ea189efacbf44e866965d92405ab0b1117c9)

So I fixed a friends wife's motorbike so in return he made me a bentley style key for the golf FOC
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg3-3.jpg&hash=bf38c8f2e1767be9e71c92a2c6b85f4d1d60919c)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg1-4.jpg&hash=0bb0fc6e0b7b9c665069486aa1e8c5fb2e3a3bc8)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg2-3.jpg&hash=93d444b2bd905c9243007def8cf06cfb027c3aeb)

A friend of mine works for ridgeway in Newbury and he told me about the rust warranty so thought I would take it down to be looked at, they said they would do the wings for me and blend the doors butttt when I went to pick it up I was really disappointed as the colour didn't match the bonnet and the bloke who done the work scratched both headlights but luckily I had taken pictures of it when I dropped it off as I was told that it was already like it which it wasn't.

So here's the colour but I cant find the pics of the lights before I took it in there.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg3.jpg&hash=2b2fd43b2b1bba8e7f1b402fd8284a083bfa3ca7)

So because I moaned they said they would paint the bonnet for me in the new year so took it back. It had a slightish dish in the bonnet where previous owner pushed on it to close it down so I got it repaired at work and they agreed to paint over the repair.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg2.jpg&hash=80610323738b6fb9f778f69b9990a1788dc19cb8)
 (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg4.jpg&hash=1a8e5664bcfa80ea1c5bc937db5154913a7e9329)

Then it was time to get it into work and get it colour coded, wheel refurbs, and the grill smothed.
Sorry about the c#*p phone pics lol
Stripped

Then some prep and paint  :happy2:

So I went and got the inside painter black
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg9.jpg&hash=6738078f9234b52df2cfeeaf65ab229747e8cb7e)

And the faces got done in silver ( don't have a lacquered pic for some reason)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg14.jpg&hash=c0678805c3ac11060d182309abb54ff2ce725ab6)

So we painted the whole lower part of the bumper black masked up and done the grey.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg21.jpg&hash=54b43fc9d2e035f31b52f5120df963b9e3f28242)

And this is it all done
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg39.jpg&hash=defe14b5e619990ce0c5d9a5da059c3bb1b01ff0)

The old center caps were corroded and looking naff so I got some off fleabay
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimagejpg33.jpg&hash=9e94e781f51a1d6a8a11504920ce362741664337)

I then changed the fuel filter and poured out what looked like water
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimage.jpg1_4.jpg&hash=d6db8b9aff9ef03d0b95fe1fac4511c9486a8c66)

We had an R32 come in at work which got written off so I had the rear lights
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimage.jpg3_1.jpg&hash=a68eb8cc7e0cbd92e9e9e23070c89c5534f41dd3)

I got myself a erisin head unit as it looked like oem and was cheap enough,
It's not a bad unit for the price but the sound output isn't as good as original and the radio signal is  but I have a booster to put on there but cba at the moment to take it back out.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimage.jpg2_2.jpg&hash=ecccd47b2f6772300d7b5cea274e72a3d36045f1)

So that's it for now and that took ages to do  :signLOL:

few £ spent there?

Not really because of my job I get some good discount on parts from tps and Euroasian (I think that's the company lol)
For all the body work that was done only set me back £120 as I only had to pay for paint and materials

Looking great after the work done so far, I like what you've done with the wheels to with silver faces and black barrels if thats the right term... Always complaining about the paintwork on mine, would love a full respray or even front end respray but then i still wouldn't be happy with the bottled or the roof as around where the aerial would be, there are 2-3 very slight dings and a small spec of paint missing in one spot.

Keep up the good work :happy2:

Thank you. Yeah a full respray would be good but it can be expensive and time consuming.
You can always get a small repair done on the roof or get a dent man on the job as they can be quite cheap.

Small update.
I'm not to keen on the textured boot handle the bit inside the rear badge) so I decided to have it painted gloss black.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimage.jpg2_3.jpg&hash=9e5ed34e0e688152146974e6cb4b10d793121e90)

Cheers mate. I only paid £120 for both bumpers,4 wheels, side skirts and grill.
And just had the badge backing done for free :P
But that's because I work in a bodyshop so that's why it's cheap  :signLOL:

Just a little update. I took a trip up to meet deako from here and purchased an s3 front brake set up. Just need to get them prepped ready to be painted and remove my rears as they are abit scabby.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimage.jpg1_6.jpg&hash=0b334fbd42c7666ee558ba88e602f10f9a5905c2)

Also bought a powerflex dogbone insert and a new genuine bolt just need to get it fitted but quite busy at work so can't get it on the ramp at the moment and it's too cold and wet to do it on the floor at home.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2Fimage.jpg2_4.jpg&hash=e1bceb8db0a27980404524307b7af2906d0a0fa0)

I had an led numberplate light from what I believe was a seat leon so I decided to try a non gen 1 from ecp and it works perfect wit no errors.

Right so I bought some led sides and decided to get them fitted last night after work as it's like a 5 min job...... Then it turned into a 35 min job.
So the bulbs I got were a little longer than the normal 501 bulb so I had to remove the indicator bulb holder to give me room to get it in the hole, so when I put the drivers side back in I knocked the bulb off inside the lense  :sad1:
So I went to my parents to borrow my dad's telescopic magnet to retrieve it but no luck, so I decided to remove the passenger 1 and see if it's magnetic which it's not and as I put it back in the light I dropped that 1 aswell  :fighting: (what a tw#t) and ended up removing the bumper and lights to turn them upside down to get the bulbs out. Grrrr
But it does look better with the led sides though.

cheers mate.

I managed to get my powerflex dogbone mount insert fitted on Saturday. It was a nice and easy 10 minute job as I had access to a ramp. The only problem I did have was when I opened the box the smaller washer was missing but luckily I was at work so I found one that was right for the job

So I have a small update.
Inside my rear door shut driver side I started to get a little rust where the rubber had been rubbing. So I decided to get it painted and get the clear foil to cover to it won't rub throughout the paint.

Need to do my gaiter also, was it a easy job

Yeah was really easy. Just pop the surround out with a plastic trim tool, then pull up on the knob really hard, then you will see a plastic ring holding the gator to the knob, just prize that off with a screwdriver and put the new 1 back on in the reverse order. I did get  one off ebay like this one. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=271323199505&globalID=EBAY-GB but it was cr@p and it's just ended up in the draw.

So we got an audi a4 in which was having new exhaust tips so I decided to polish the old ones up and put them on the golf as I heard on here that the fit over the old gti trims.
Easy fit just needed a bit of persuasion with a rubber mallet  :signLOL:

Nice work so far.

The tail pipes are a nice little cheap upgrade, done that myself a few months back while Ive been saving for for my BCS exhaust. Pleased to report it on order due to be delivered next week. I like the way they reflect of your freshly painted rear valance.

Haven't updated this for a while.
I noticed that the aerial seal was split and I didn't want to end up with a leak so I had ordered a new one from tps.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2FIMG_9011.jpg&hash=2cbb703a275b665bd1637f55a750d711d9c88f9b)

For those that would want a quick guide (5door)

Tools used
Trim clip remover
25 torx  screwdriver
Torch
22mm spanner
10mm ratchet spanner
Magnet
10mm socket and ratchet

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2FIMG_9016.jpg&hash=cfea725e51ab0b5dc97754ad22736ff62803e043)

First removed the upper trim by using the trim clip remover and pulling downwards.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2FIMG_9013.jpg&hash=0a6c9e232ba24735de9959c410f160334ac18870)

Then removed the airbag logos on the c pillar trims and removed the Torx 25 screws ( 1 each side )
Then removed the 2 10mm nuts and pulled the c pillar trims inwards towards the centre of the car

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2FIMG_9014.jpg&hash=32064a1aca72ce031e39ce82915a2a2d012b5e56)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2FIMG_9015.jpg&hash=6e8d24a3bec4f59d297219e5096dd454c99e335a)

Once this is done used the 10mm ratchet spanner and removed the 2 10mm nuts holding the curtain air bag igniters in place and moved out of the way slightly so I could unplug the aerial. Then removed the 22mm nut on the bottom of the aerial and removed form the roof.
Then i slid the new seal on had to use a bit of wd40 as I didn't want to split the new one.  Then refitted it all in the reverse order. Only a 30min job

New fitted

Cleaned the sealer off the sump and cleaned the old oil and loads of grime from inside the sump and cleaned the sealer and oil from the bottom of the engine where the sump fits

Also cleaned the oil pick up pipe out using brake cleaner it was starting to get quite clogged up but now looking like this
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftappy503%2FGti_mofo%2FIMG_9289.jpg&hash=972076ab874ced4c3198e2c8cb30d3d9da736cc6)

Didn't get the fuel filter done or the pollen filter due to time but will get those done Monday lunch time. Didn't use the sump plug either as it looked too big for the thread and I tried putting it in and it didn't feel right so I just reused the old plug as I didn't want to cross thread the sump using the new one.

Got the pipercross panel filter fitted and I got a downpipe from r5gtt which I removed the pre cat which I fitted today and it feels so much more responsive and picks up a lot better unfortunately due to time didn't get pics.
