I was wondering if there is a thread about the history of the forum?
Who were the founder members, details of their first Mk5 GTi's or other cars at the time etc. :happy2:
-
Nope not something we have at present but will put some details together on the history a bit later today :happy2:

Great, cheers Steve :happy2:
-
OK, here's a start :happy2:
Part 1 - The Humble Beginnings: -
The site was created by Tom (Top Cat) and myself in October 2008. We felt there was a gap in the big world of the t'interweb for a site more focused towards the current generation (as it was at the time) GTI.
We gave ourselves a simple brief that the site had to be free of the ties from commercial sponsors and advertising. So all the initial costs where covered by us.
We number of people got involved during mid October to help test and prove the site before we formally launched later that month. This included people like Greeners (or Greenouse as he was known then ), 182_Blue and 08Micsta. 08Micsta was the main person who helped with the forum design and some of the images used on the site.
We all meet through the Golf GTI forum that covers all marks of the Golf, golfgtiforum.co.uk.
Back then Mk5 GTI ownership was a common theme between us as well, I had a Steel Grey Edition 30, Top Cat had a Candy White GTI, Greeners was in a Diamond Black Edition 30, 182_Blue owned a Candy White Edition 30 and 08Micsta at the time didn't drive but his family owned a Tornado Red GTI (He comes from South Africa).
The site officially launched on the 30th October and through word of mouth / internet chatter grew to 150+ members in it's first month.
Initially the member base was made up of purely Mk5 owners but quickly this began to expand to all things 2.0TFSI and more recently pretty much anything VAG.
More to follow :happy2:

:notworthy: Great topic

Subscribed :popcornsoda: :congrats:
More please

Wow Ian. Great post. Cant wait for this to evolve more. Compelling reading so far steve. :congrats:
-
Interesting to know! I only joined this site fairly recently, but in that time I have learned so much from here! I have had all kinds of questions answered and have even managed to help other people with theirs. I have had my MKV GTI from when they first came out, and I wish I had found this site much sooner! :notworthy:
-
very interesting, i did not think when i bought my mk 5 this site could lead to so much.
it is brilliant but it has completely reduced my savings to zero ha ha
-
So what happened to the Mk6 version of the forum as I can see you set one up, but it seems to lack any traffic with most owners over on the generic GTi forum.
By comparison this has far more info and obviously all the subsections which is great, and even though I don't own a mk5 I still like coming on here, weird I know :stupid:
Do you think the mk6 will naturally evolve as the cars drop out of warranty and the owners start tinkering more?
-
Brilliant, thanks Steve, really interesting. :happy2:
This forum has enhanced my motoring life, and I'm sure that's the case for a huge number of us on here. I have learnt an incredible amount, and the knowledge has been freely and enthusiastically given. I'm really enjoying going to meets and learning more about my car and all the others closely linked to the Mk5 GTi.
-
Interesting reading.
As another member who doesnt actually own a Golf, I still find this the most friendly of all the Forums I've ever used. Everyone is welcoming and freindly, maybe I just need to buy a Golf now! :happy2:
-
a simple brief that the site had to be free of the ties from commercial sponsors and advertising. So all the initial costs where covered by us.
In my opinion one of the best things about this forum. Far too many others are crippled as they are in the pockets of big tuning companies.

+1 , i dont mind throwing in a few ££££'s once in a while to keep things running as they are. Great place to be this place. :happy2:

+2, if chipping in every now and agian keeps the advertising away, that's fine with me. :happy2:
One of the many good things (apart from invaluable advice and great peeps) is not being bombarded with advertising banners and those really annoying pop ups!
:drinking:

Part 2 - Some History & Highlights: -
June 2009 - Forum Rolling Road Day @ Superchips
A great turn out with Lots of generous numbers seen on the Maha dyno  http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,3928.0.html
Dec 2008 - Mk5 Golf GTI was featured in VW Driver Magazine!
In the January edition of the VW Driver Magazine on Page 53 (Technical Forum Section) the site gets a mention. The magazine is out on the 19th Dec. Details of the article can be found here (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,878.html) or visit the VW Driver Magazine Website http://www.volkswagendrivermag.co.uk/
Nov 2008 - 1st Mk5 Golf GTI Forum meet is held!
The first organised meet for the site was held on Saturday 29th November near (a very foggy) Stafford. Over 20 cars in attendance. Details and pictures can be found here (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,672.html).
-
The Superchips Rolling Road Day was an excellent meet/dyno day.
Personally speaking it must feature as one of the highlights of my forum membership purely because of the number of people there and the friendly atmosphere. :happy2:

I'll echo your comments Hedge, but for the first meet, wasn't a great day weather wise, but was great to see so many mk5's (and an imposter ), was early days of mk5 modding :happy2:
-
The first meet, was the best one for me. Like a lot things in life the first is often the best and most memorable. The pics of all the GTI's lined up was amazing. :pomppomp:
-
+1. It might've been foggy but loved it.

Think I've seen the car on monzas and badgeless honeycomb grille at work...

Part 3 - The Future
So on to the site's future, and in simple terms it's time for a change.
While the site has been a challenge at times I have still enjoyed my time running it but now I have to focus on some other priorities in life and as part of a major change in my career I need to find someone to take over the ownership / day to day running the site, i.e. as the site administrator.
It's needs to be someone with a true passion for it because it does take a lot of time and commitment!
You will also need some technical skills on web site hosting (apache webserver, PHP, MySQL and SMF Forum Software).
We have been approached in the past by other forums offering to take this place over but I would really like to find someone to take the site on and forward in something similar to it's current guise.
So if your interested in helping or just want to ask any questions please drop me a line
As always I appreciate all the contributions, help and support you have all given me and the site over the past 4 years :notworthy: :notworthy:
Thanks,
SteveP
-
Got to say its been a great forum from day one and has if I am honest been the best forum I go on. Even if it's just to see how many times Saint Steve can throw his toys out of the pram :signLOL: . The first few get togethers we had were great even in the fog  and I have met some great people on the site so lets hope that the site grows and only gets better :drinking:
-
Well Mr.P
I'm afraid i don't have any of the skills required to run the site. Which is why i'd personally like to thank you for all you've done for this community and the obvious hard work/time and effort gone into it :notworthy:
When reading the above, the mere thought of this forum changing made me feel sick to my stomach. I really hope there is someone willing and able to fill your very large shoes.

I have spent so much of my time on this forum over the past 2 years and its been great.
Definitely the best mk5 forum! I hope someone can take over to keep it going.
A massive thanks to the admin team :happy2:
-
Suddenly I'm filled with unease at this news. :scared:
SteveP has been a great since the beginning with this forum, keeping it free of adverts and sponsors has definitely made this site the thriving community it is today and it is a sad day that he cannot continue to run/own the site. His commitment has been unwavering, even in the adversity of constant personal peanut head attacks :signLOL:
I for one salute you MrP :notworthy:
-
Respect is due :notworthy: giving up four years of your life is very noteworthy :congrats:
Big shoes to fill!
Thank you steve :drinking:
-
This is the best car forum I have ever joined. Lets hope it stays that way. :drinking:
-
Only been on the this forum less than a year and frequent the others no more! :happy2:
The spirit of community and freindship are it's greatest assets and that comes down from the top. In the time I've been here ive made some good friends, learnt invaluable things about the car and just about everything else you care to mention and in the background is steveP making everything run like clockwork without a lot of praise.
Never met you Steve but have the upmost respect for the work you have done. Hope you find a person/persons who will keep the forum going as if nothing as changed. A hard act to follow :notworthy:
(P.S. this would be a good time to ask for forum donations peeps)
:happy2:
-
Ahhh reading about the good old days! I remember that first forum meet very well. I was the 9th member to sign up :chicken:
-
This is really bad news.
Steve, I wish I had the skills but I don't. I have the time when I am on nights but.............
The two years has certainly cost me some money but thoroughly enjoyed it.
Please reconsider.................... :popcornsoda:
-
Sounds like someone who's retired and have lots of time on his hands is needed
Any ideas??
-
Joined this forum less than a month ago and I cannot believe how friendly and helpful everyone is!
Good luck to whoever takes this over and a big :congrats: for running this for 4 years. This forum is truly awsome. I need to find out when the next meet is??

I dont even own a vw anymore but always pop in to see whats new and see what hurdy's bought next :P but life moves on hopefully it can move on as per before, Its been a credit to you SteveP

Brilliant idea! Central to the country would be good. I would love to help organise this if needed. :happy2:

....I've come to the conclusion that you are a meets whore, Ian! [I'll post pics of our mini-meet elsewhere].
We found before that somewhere near Wolverhampton was fairly 'central' for the forum's membership, although it doesn't suit Scotland etc. The location will always be a compromise.
May I suggest you start a new thread on the subject, Ian? :happy2:. And if you need any advice/tips on organising it, just ask.

....You don't need permission to start a meet thread but it would be a good idea to inform the Admin team (SteveP, TopCat, Greeners) by PM. They could then perhaps consider posting a header notice (under 'News' at top) like the one linked to this thread, in due course.

@ Ian: Some folks think that Wolverhampton is a dodgy area - I lost my front number plate there but they did me a favour by me losing the mount as well.
That first mega meet wasn't at Wolverhampton but somewhere not too far away IIRC - Stafford?

I was thinking of maybe turning it into a show, maybe to celebrate 5 years of the forum in 2013? It would be great to do it somewhere with a track or hill-climb or even just a long straight? We could pay for it with sponsorship from tuners and parts companies? Perhaps a bit ambitious, but it would be amazing! Call it Mark 5. Nice and simple. All Dubbers welcome, but a focus on the Mk5 and it's part-sharing VAG family?

....Any event with a hillclimb or track has to have proper Marshalls, flags, fire extinguishers, ambulance in attendance etc. I'm not saying it couldn't be done but some forum members won't want to go on track but would still need to pay for their attendance so the circuit's fees could be met.
I stand to be corrected of course, but I don't think that the forum's Admin team would want to get invloved in any form of sponsorship.
Sorry, I'm not trying to dampen your enthusiasm but am just playing devil's advocate and pointing out what might be involved etc.
-
A track day meets would be awesome... but shotgun NOT organising it... :scared:
-

@Robin
Would allowing them to pay to have stands count as sponsorship? They could simply be advertising the products we all buy anyway. It would allow us to see some great demo's and maybe get some meet-day special deals?
Just an idea.

....What, like a mini GTI International Show?
I don't think that many aftermarket supply businesses wouldn't be very interested unless they could rely on sufficient business income from the event. Believe me, it's not an easy task getting everyone to agree a meeting place and a commitment to attend, let alone everything else.
But, I think it's worthwhile contacting a few circuit owners to see what the deal would be for a private club meet with track access.
-
Club GTI do it... maybe ask Deako, see if he knows how it works for them.
-

Ok I'll ask Steve P Greeners and Top Cat if I can do a thread based on a mega-meet at a track or hill-climb and see if people would be keen to celebrate 5 years of the Forum. I'll need some help though if they go for it!
-
I think a track day would be fairly easy.
People like club MSV may even organise it for you/us?
-
^^^^
Be aware that for hillclimbs, participants need fireproof overalls as well as trackday helmets. A trackday circuit would be easier.
-
Sounds good, but I think you should ensure that it's not only a track-oriented meet. A lot of owners like me I imagine have never been on a track (but would like to try) and don't have highly tuned/modified cars.
I just think you might alienate a fair few members with this approach. I would however love to see some stage 2+ Ed30's bombing around a track!
-
You will have just as much fun in a 'standard' GTI as you would a 2+.
I would even do it in the Touran, be a right laugh :happy2:

....When any meet is at a track you are not obliged to go on track yourself. But with a helmet you could blag a passenger ride with someone if you wanted.
-
I think you've picked me up incorrectly. I was just inferring that it might be an idea to have some 'sideshow' events alongside the track stuff. Maybe a VAG babes '
least best dressed lady' competition...helmets required
-
There have been forum meets at both Shakespeare raceway and Santa Pod (RWYB days). Either of those appeal?
-
Please start a new thread if you want to organise a forum meet :happy2:
Back to the topic in hand, this place needs a new admin so keep the PM's coming

Fingers crossed that the new forum admin retains the ethos set buy the current team. :-)

Im back in the UK soon after my Saudi job abruptly ended yesterday when I returned back from vacation!... Have to say, I was sorted of relieved in a way and been away for three years and coming back to this forum. Hope the atmosphere stays as it was before. SteveP, thanks for taking a lot of your time out and I take it you are sticking around?
-
Thanks for running the forum SteveP, I've learned a lot from here, and have been helped out a lot aswell :happy2:
Just hope the future admin runs it the same way :drinking:
-
Just want to say thanks to Steve for his hard work on this site. I don't post on here that often but visit nearly everyday and it is by far one of the best forums I have been on.
-
Easiest to navigate, welcoming, most helpful forum with a real sense of community. Congrats to Steve and the admin team :congrats:
Mate some good mates from here and still meeting more forum members all the time (Great to meet you today Sie)
-
You will have just as much fun in a 'standard' GTI as you would a 2+.
I would even do it in the Touran, be a right laugh :happy2:
(
I have a couple of annecdotes first:
1. Doing Donington last year just after Inters i saw my brakes get so hot i had no brakes left, so i had to do 3 laps without using them, while doing that i lapped a stock mk 5 GTI  (mine being a stage 3)
2. Doing Knutstorp last saturday a swede who's cupra was at the workshop, took the r888's and fitted them to his chipped but otherwise stock caddy, he had just as much fun as the rest of us.
Back to the subject a trackday meet would allow a lot of people to experience the mods the might have considered, so an excellent idea IMO
-
Please start a new thread if you want to organise a forum meet :happy2:
Back to the topic in hand, this place needs a new admin so keep the PM's coming
Is there a deadline before lights out?
-
Ideally needs to be done in the next 3 weeks.
-
Really sorry to hear this, Its been a great place for the last few years. I wish I was technically competent enough to do what steve does, i hope we remain with the same ethos that has made this place great over the last 4 years
-
What happens if no one steps forward in three weeks? :scared:

We really need to do massive group meet sooner than later!!! try get in a magazine massive photo!! this site has everything a mk5 owner would need, ever wanted!!! got to take my hat off to steve :notworthy: :notworthy:!! maybe have group meet thank those who put all long hours, hard work to make it what it is now!!!! maybe donations on the meet to go towards making it stronger and bigger for future!!!!! :happy2:

Is it time to consider an annual membership fee along the lines of £10 that way we can pay someone (hopefully a member) to help Steve & the gang to keep the site running. It may suit someone whos self-employed
There is a lot of great advice & info built up on this site over the years, it would be a shame to lose it. We also make that info free to anyone, if they (the greater public) want access maybe they should join and fund the site through additional membership
Just an idea
-
this place needs a new admin so keep the PM's coming
Is there a deadline before lights out?
....Hold on, a change is a comin'!:
^ SteveP blacks up pretty well
-
Superb forum...it shouldn't just die. I'm certainly willing to pay a yearly sub if that's what it takes to keep it going. I'm sure most folks here have saved a few quid due to advice, tips, etc. from others. Although no doubt most have spent more than they thought possible!
Thanks Steve and all the others involved (I don't know you, but hey) for all your hard work.

I am sure there would be a lot of members willing to cough an annual fee too. This is up there with the best forums Ive been on - such a massive knowledge base!
Im sure my missus expects to see me on some "adult sites" but 9 times out of 10 I'ts this forum thats on my screen!
Cheers Steve! :drinking:

Not sure if you want to put it in the public domain or discuss privately but roughly how much does this forum cost to host and run per year and taking any moderation duties out of the equation, how much time does the admin side take up.
-
Costs are around £95 a month and time is variable but at least one day per week typically.
-
Wow, I don't have the time or the money to do that, you clearly have a lot of commitment and that it what makes this forum one of the best. Hats off to you :congrats:

Hello Steve P. I was given your name by a mate as someone local who could help me put cruise onto my 06 Oct VRS. It's got the maxidot display. Let me know on 07765866489. Cheers

Can you PM me more details on how its currently running - guessing its a dedicated VPS somewhere?

Second that, happy to pay a membership fee.
Probably been considered or mentioned but why not charge for putting things in the "For Sale" section, even if it's only a £1 per listing (irrelevant of value or number of items in that 1 listing), it would soon add up. So far this month there are 8 pages of listings alone. No idea how that would be managed or monitored though
:happy2:
-
.
Sorry, but I'm not happy to pay a compulsory membership fee. Beyond paying an Internet Provider, I strongly believe that access to all web sites should be free and I don't bother to visit those which charge, whoever they are and whatever they provide.
As far as this site is concerned I consider that I already contribute enough in the form of help to others etc etc not to have to pay for access. Sorry, my view might be unpopular but I'm just being honest about my feelings in this respect.
If it must be done, then the suggestion of a £1 per "For Sale" item listing is a good and fair one, in my opinion. :happy2:
-
I can safely say if I was to take it on, itd operate in the way it does now
I.e. donations if hosting needed to be paid for etc.
I dont believe in membership sites, though as RR says, a classified fee is an option if necessary.

....It's merely a link to my Facebook page where you can enjoy my music and photos. Nothing is sold from that Facebook link which benefits myself financially.

I think a pound for each listing in the for sale section is a good idea it's only a £1

I think a pound for each listing in the for sale section is a good idea it's only a £1
....And only £1 less from what someone is profiting from selling an item for. So it's a kind of gentle 'tax'. Pity that the feckin' govn'ment doesn't tax people for £1 per transaction rather than 20% vat!

Alex/Steve
I don't have many posts currently, but I will joining the MK6 fold in a few weeks with a Golf R, so I'll be spending more time around here. I'd be happy to helpout if any assistance is required. I'm an IT Manager by trade with tonnes of LAMP experience.
I know one of the current site sponsors who I'm sure will vouch for me if needs be.
So if you need a hand, either now or in the future, ping me an email - I'm more than happy for the current Admin team to pass on my email addy.

I don't remember Steve asking for suggestions of how to make money for the forum??
He has asked for people to come forward if they feel they are able to take on the Admin role as he has his hands full! :rolleye:

He didn't ask.. and i'm not sure if he is presuming the new admin will take over the cost or if he would continue to cover this himself?
Either way.. Its not completely fair 1 person paying the cost.. At the same time I dont think moving to a paid subscription is the way forwards purely because it will stunt the growth of the forum. Cost aside, most people will log on, see it costs money and not want to bother sorting it out so they will go elsewhere. I think the forum has become as big as it has because its free and easy to join and see ALL the sections from the start. I look at it from my point of view.. Yes I'm an active user and I would probably pay a small annual fee now.. But at the start when I first logged on it would have put me off and I'd have never signed up.
I like the idea of the paid sales section though. Either £1 per item or £5 for 1 month for unlimited items or similar? Not sure how easy it would be to implement on this forum software though.
This is help cover the running costs and maybe even create a pot of money for future upgrades / expansion.

I actually can't see anything wrong with a tenner a year say.
The reason?
Have you seen the members list with people who join then never come on here?
Also it stops the time wasters and people who just want to wind people up, sammy, trolling I think its called.

Yeah thats great for all of us. But can you honestly say that when you first came to the forum, without having seen it, or got to know any people, you would have paid a tenner to join?
-
Its not really difficult all this is it?
Restricted membership until you join fully.
The Mitsubishi Evo forum has the same format and they get a magazine, lanyard etc etc.
Not that bothered about all that but I am just saying paying for all the fun I have on here is not a big deal.

....Nath, I think that the thread's title "History of the Forum" has become 'Future of the Forum' and it does seem an ideal opportunity for folks to post and share their views and ideas about how the forum can best manage to self-finance itself (without financial profit) in its new future without SteveP as Admin.
Of course, any Admin team can choose to ignore the views expressed and arrange matters as only they think best. The forum isn't a democracy AFAIK.

I understand this Robin, but it just turns into another thread like the one about Phil where the whole thread is made up of guesswork and speculative suggestions. Until such a time when someone does take over from Steve they may indeed ask the members for suggestions, but until that time I really don't see the point in all this talk of suggesting members have to pay!

Must admit that as someone who has only joined the site a few days ago I feel gobsmacked that it could close down. Please, please will someone with the requisite skills please take it over? Despite the fact that I'm a newbie I really do think the site is a good forum and I would thank all involved for their contributions especially the Site Administrator who I am sure contributes massively to making it such a success.
Please don't let it sink without trace!!!
-
^^^^
I don't think that anyone has suggested that the site would close down. The hunt is on to find a replacement just for Admin SteveP as he now has other commitments etc.
-
wish i knew how to do it but alas i dont :rolleye:

This forum has been great for me. The golf for me was three cars ago and I still come on here!
I have through this forum
* Been to the BTCC with full hospitality for the weekend with AmD
* Sold my old camera!
* Bought various bits and pieces saving some cash
* fixed various broken stuff on the golf!
I love they way the forum is run and the friendly folk. I do hope that someone steps forward and runs it in the same vein as Mr P.
One small word of caution - if you introduce membership fees you will loose a lot of folk like me who are just around for the banter!
Big thanks to Steve for his dedication so far and for making the forum what it is.
-
I concur, I sold my GTi a few years ago too yet still browse on here.
The forum is easy to navigate and full of useful details and informative members.
-
I too would love to be able to look after the forum, but I'm more a hammer and chisel man than a PC and software man.

....I think that you would make a very good 'local' Moderator for the Modifications & Technical area of the forum, rather like richwig is for the How-to Guides area. Plus you already have experience of being a Moderator on another forum website.
If it helps, I could probably only be trusted to Moderate the VAG Babes area - Like an alcoholic in a brewery!
But by appointing different Moderators restricted to specific areas it will lighten the load of Global Moderators in the site's future.

2nd that... You would make A certain Cat unemployed in my book. :popcornsoda:
Hope someone comes foward to take over, will be a shame to see the site close. Difficult boots to fill of Mr Pounds.

Sounds like someone who's retired and have lots of time on his hands is needed
Any ideas??
yeah a retired guy driving a gti lol

sorry have to disagree with you redrobin, i think a token gesture of maybe £10 or £20 per year would be more than fair then maybe £1 per listed for sale item if needed, we all save a lot of money on this site so i think most people would be ok with it

....That's a good idea - It would achieve the same and doubtless be much easier to manage for both this site's Admin team and for the sellers. :happy2:
However, the Admin team have to find a replacement for SteveP first. Without a public announcement, we don't know when this will happen - The changover is likely to be seamless apart from the possibility of an interruption to change servers.

....Someone who is retired and who consequently has a lot of time and dedication is clearly an advantage but absolutely useless if they don't have an extensive expertise in IT (as SteveP has).
I think that having extra Moderators who are limited to specific areas (like already done with richwig is on How-to Guides) is an excellent idea because it lightens the load on Global Moderators. What happens is of course up to the decisions of the Admin team.

apologies rr i posted my comment before reading all your replies, it is a good point with regards to newbies coming in and seing the £10 or so charge, they would prob not join as you say, maybe something like a 3 month trial then if you want to stay then a token fee per annum charge or up to £20 or so would be the best bet, topped with maybe a £1 charge or so for listing an item for sale,,, in this day and age i think these charges are fine, i mean who is going to come in and love this site then turn round and say i aint gonna pay £20 a year or so - nobody i would think - , lets give the admin team - new or old - something to work with here, if they turn a small profit then great, but if we dont then it may only be a matter of time before we are full of advertisements to deal with dont you think.
£20 - lets do it possible new admin team

Time to bring this up to date.
I haven't had much time to follow up some of the enquires from possible new Admins, but have today replied to the people who have come forward so far that myself and the other mods felt are the best fit so far.
My change of job has now been completed so it's more important than ever for me to move away from the Admin role of the site, as I don't want it to be seen as a conflict of interests for me, the site or my new company.
As with before if you or know of someone that has some of the skills needed to run a forum then please get in touch ASAP :happy2:
