Made a start on this. Will be a similar format to my 996TT kit review.
So many of you know Ive had my fair share of brake configurations!
The last set being the Porsche 996TT / 350mm setup (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,42137.msg491789.html#msg491789). So I think Ive got a fair bit to compare to & judge.
My ultimate goal when I started modifying the car for fast road & occasional track day use was to have a lightweight, proper 2 piece brake kit that didn't look lost behind 18's.
What is the AKS Brembo Kit?
- Brembo Gt Senior 4 pot calipers
- Brembo Motorsort 370mm 2 piece fully floating rotors
- Alloy AKS caliper brackets
- HEL braided brake lines with stainless steel fittings.
- Textar (Porsche OEM compound) pads (Massive choice of pads when ordering)
Okay, show me some more pictures!

Bit of Tech Spec...
370mm by 32mm brembo Motorsport castings. Cast in Italy different to the stuff in the GT kits.
Originally off the Tarmac kit for a 2005 focus World rally car it's got the thin flange to get the weight down.
Calipers are road GT Calipers straight of a standard Ferrari F50. They're configured to trail on the Ferrari so to convert them to leading for VAG Alex reverses them so the small piston leads first.
Bells are CNC machined then hard anodised and Lasered up with the AKS logo.

Brackets are lightweight aluminium front mounted so the kit fits TTs S3 GTI Octavia out of the box. The brackets are helicoiled for durability.

Pad is a standard F40/F50 pad available in 20 different compounds from road to compounds for ceramic discs. I plan on trying Pagid blue or RS29 pads next.
But not sure how they will behave in daily use. The pads I have in that come with the kit as standard give awesome stopping power both on the road and on track I'm just curious as to if there's even more to be had from this kit.
I'll possibly have a road and track pad if the Blues or 29's are noisy as a daily pad.
Calipers are 4 piston with 40/44mm piston sizes. Slightly oversize for the GTI/S3 master cylinder but work well on the road due to rotor size.
There is a master cylinder upgrade available for £300 which I was concerned I might end up needing (concerned due to my budget) but I have found the kit feels really really good in daily road use. I'm not sure what it would take for me to feel the need the MC upgrade.
Dave B advised "Really needs the MC upgrade when tracking the car as the pads will be slow to release and slow to go on the disc increasing wear."
Calipers are spaced out to accommodate the 370mm discs.
By removing the spacer it's possible to run the vagbremtechnic TTRS disc assembly at 362mm without further mods adds a bit of choice at rotor replacement time but I believe the 370mm rotor kit is the same weight or fractionally lighter than the 362mm kit.
Sourcing & Cost...
Alex at AKS tuning supplied and fitted this kit for me.
The Brake kit cost £1495 which I think is great value compared to some of the alternatives.
Fitting costs £90
Alex is meticulous in his work and as many know he is the one I choose to tune & maintain my pride & joy. I would really recommend him.
AKS is located in Bedford. Alex can be found on the forum here; Click for Alexs contact page (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1981)
Alternatively the kit can be shipped for £30
Conclusion
It's easy to say good things about something you've spent considerable money on be it to re-assure yourself (or others) it was really worth it.
However. I am properly over the moon with this kit. It's what Ive aimed for for a long time and gladly it's more than lived upto my expectations so far!
Ive covered a fair few miles on the Derbyshire dales country roads, up and down the M1 and around Cadwell park circuit. One of my favourite 'performance' mods. Really adds to making the car a pleasure to drive.
I know Alex often shows people how the AKS Vrs goes and STOPS! Maybe anyone who's experienced it would back up how great these brakes are.
Also Matt Holman (Bignod00) & Ben Dickinson (Bendy) have these so will hopefully add anything they have found or I might have missed.
Any questions please fire ahead. Sorry this info has taken a decade! I didn't want to do it before doing a trackday, then since I started the review I've been really busy!
Thanks to Ben for a bit more input;
Great review Mike :happy2:. Plenty of technical info.
I can confirm this brake kit is awesome! Can shed huge amounts of speed very quickly. I have done two track days with these brakes and they have been fantastic. Once they have got some heat in them it is very confidence inspiring around track. Also I have not had any brake fade at all yet. They do get a bit noisy when really hot but still perform well.
Alex also provides a great service and if you decide to go for one of these kit I would recommend making the journey to AKS to meet Alex and see how things should be done properly.
Here is a cheeky picture. Sorry about the dirty car :ashamed:

Made a start on this. Will be a similar format to my 996TT kit review.
Got loads on so will try and smash this out tomorrow night :happy2:
Soooooooooo, were 2 days and 17 posts into a review thread without a review in sight. At this rate we'll match Hurdys Golf R build thread which was about 17 pages long before he even got the car

I know pads are app. 240£ :happy2:

I believe that replacement discs are fairly pricey (being proper hardcore motorsport items), but will last for a decent amount of time - making them good value overall :happy2:
I'd suggest that you contact Alex or DaveB directly - both are very busy guys and may not see this thread straight away when they visit the forum.
IMO for £1,500 (ish) this brake setup is a performance bargain :happy2:

Again. Apologies for the delay, I'm involved in the national event for Armed forces day this week & have been mega busy!

Updated, work in progress.

Nice write up Mike, they look amazing. :happy2:
I maybe should of went for this kit instead of the TTRS setup.
What discs are you planning on running for the 335mm rears?
-
I haven't decided on the 335mm kit as ££ is short & I have things higher on the list.
Alex has them on the Octavia and they look
-
Just seen them on AKS Tuning FB page. That will be some stopping power with that setup
I can imagine it wont be cheap with the alloy hubs too.

You can use the 362mm AP kit on the RS3's. The person to get a review of the 362's is Rich (Cupra R on here) great kit

1270 for fully floating rotors, brackets, bolts and lines. Pads are extra.

Thanks for the extremely thorough review Mike, it was interesting reading! :congrats: Thought I should add my views on this brake kit to the thread too (because you asked so nicely.)
After hearing the good reviews I finally took the plunge and got this kit fitted to my car. I love the way it performs and how it feels almost exactly the opposite to how the standard OEM 345mm single piston setup feels. IMHO the OEM setup is massively over servo'd at low speed and on initial application of the brakes. This however isn't matched when braking extremely hard/at high speed (and on track) as the brake power seems to reach its limit very quickly.
On the other hand the AKS setup on initial application is very linear and progressive all the way through to it locking up the front wheels due to its amazing clamping power. This is just what I wanted as it is really easy to control your level of braking and is much easier for left-foot braking as well.
The way to think of it is like the difference between a standard REVO (other tuners are available  ) throttle map and a linear throttle map. Instead of all the action happening within the first 10-20% of pedal travel its spread evenly throughout so therefore much more controllable when on the edge.
Anyway, here's some pics!

I should point out that those OZ are 19" so don't really show just how big these brakes are!
Here they are behind some 18" 1.2's.

I was amazed that they fitted behind these wheels tbh, I thought I'd have to use at least some 10mm spacers.

See, no spacers! :happy2:
Lastly I'd like to say thanks to Alex for putting this kit together, it really is great. :drinking:
-
I can't believe those brakes fit behind the 18x7.5J ET51 Orions
So now you finally got Summer, Winter and Track wheels :congrats:
Orions look good , and I LOVE the purple/white combo, but those OZ look crap. :P
:sad1:
Now Mike, go get some cheap Orions for winter. :happy2:
-
Thanks very much for the fitment examples Matt.
You should add the video! Haha!
I did 3x 20min sessions at oulton park today. My god. :driver: I will add my thoughts later to the review. But as a brief hint. Fan, bloody, tactic!!

I'm equally surprised by the Orions matey, really shocking. Yeah, very happy that the wheels saga is finally at an end.
OZ rock, I don't care what you say Carlo! :P
These Orions don't actually come up that often, well, I haven't seen many anyway!

Messing about with the GoPro today whilst checking the wheel fitment.

Gotta love the Partyboy music! :pomppomp:
Wanna party? :pomppomp:
I sold my Orion's cheap to a mate :sad1: Orion's would go on the list as winter wheels but we don't use my car that much so probably not that cost effective
Need to have a spin with his new setup. In fact, you 've changed loads since i last drove this!!

Everyone told me your car was always in Oakley Mike.
Everytime I go over to see Alex it's never f***ing there! :sad1: :booty:

Was very tempted by the DB9 calipers I saw in the workshop until Alex told me the discs alone were four figures :ashamed:

Happy for you mate :happy2:
My next major input to the review will be after a track day or after trying different pads.
Im curious about the MC upgrade but dont want to lose the great progressive pedal feel.
-
I just found this review, sounds really good am glad I rang Alex at the start of month and I got my Cupra R booked in for a set. 4 weeks to go till I make the trip down to AKS for my new brakes, can't wait.

I had this brake kit fit a week last Saturday. I haven't really had chance to test them yet, but am going to Croft on the 7th so I'll test them out there. Here is a couple of pics taken at AKS after fitting.

How did you get on mate?
Croft went really well, brakes performed amazingly over the standard 345mm brakes, no brake fade at all in the 20min or so I was stopping out for.
I'll be going again when the weather gets better about April time, hopefully by then I'll have a Wavetrac LSD and light weight wheels with track tryes.

Does anyone know if Alex sold the last set?

Just an update on my set of this kit.
Works fantastic in every day use and so far the only brakesetup that haven't shown any weakness during trackdays.
I'm extremely pleased with this and so far haven't found anything i want to replace it with :happy2:
-
Will have an update on this awesome kit soon.
Have been away a lot with work but planning on fitting some pagid blue pads now Alex has tried them in the AKS Vrs.
Then after the family holiday a test at Bedford or Donnington :driver:
-
You fancy fitting them on the wrong Red Cupra? :P
They do look like beasts though!
-
Haha. It's an amazing kit. Ticks all the boxes for me. Over the moon with them.
-
Good stuff.
Just been having a read of your build thread... lots of nice work.
And I thought Alex was fed up with me pestering him...
-
Don't know how he puts up with us obsessive compulsive modders! :stupid: :innocent:
-
Well, my list of mods is a fraction of yours and will continue to stay that way after I get it back (for a while anyway!)

So u decided on not selling up mate...aks told me u might b stripping the car a few months ago?
-
Really happy with my set too
Slightly different calipers on mine being the db9 Aston martins ones but such an awesome setup that inspires confidence
Just had them swapped onto my new S3 from the old GTI and feel even better, probably as it's dsg so getting extra braking as it drops down the gears :notworthy:
Dave
-
I have them, with the pagid pads and they are awesome. "They do work" was a friends comment!!
-
Alex, are you planning on doing any more kits of 370mm or above?
-
Alex, are you planning on doing any more kits of 370mm or above?
I've spoken to Alex about if he will anymore of these kits...it a one off mate
Maybe if there where enough demand he might do it...
Best is to give him a call

Yeah thought might do the Mike upgrade from 350mm to 370mm
-
Rumour has it he's got another pair of lightly used Brembo F40 calipers in for refurb at the moment to go on the AP Racing rotors used on the Seat SuperCopa Race car....
But hey what do I know......
I'd be asking sooner rather than later and getting them painted a funky groovy colour
-
These rotors?
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo56%2F2968Gsi_Mike%2F100_0689.jpg&hash=f4acccec085401ed0eca6baedac7d56e6b38c244)

Supercopa rotor is CP4542-112/113 they're not available J hooked so I would guess they arent the ones....very similar though - they look like BTCC items at 366mmx35mm Supercopa are 362x32mm
So near as dammit!
-
4mm smaller so I'll just knock off one drool face
Another epic kit almost ready for someone then
-
remember Mike diameter means nothing.....its all about the radius! so 2mm so u owe me one half smiley
-

I assume how wide the braking surface is Rich
-
We consider effective radius in brake Calcs Rich...
Diameter is only here to sell kits
For example
TTS disc is 340mm, R32 disc is 345mm. Pad sits in exactly the same position on both is the R32 disc better even though the extra 2.5mm is just creating a lip and isn't touched by the pad???
Also you would normally use the centre point of the pad radially for calculations, some pads are available with hugely different heights from 41-54mm say.......so by using a smaller pad you are technically moving it further out...that make sense?

Yes that makes absolute sense.
So as i went for 340mm over 345mm, the pad sits in the same place, same "radial position" braking effect is the same despite loosing 2.5mm disc size radius.

Does the extra diameter have much effect on heat dissipation?
-
Does the extra diameter have much effect on heat dissipation?
Id wager not enough to notice unless your a racing driver, racing in a racing car in a race!

I didn't ask if it would be noticeable :P

I don't think so.... but alex can do similar kits.

Cheers, will ask him and see what he says.

He still does the 362mm kit which is equally awesome

Cheers Mike, dont suppose you know the going rate?

sh*t the bed!! Perhaps thats not the kit for me then LOL. Would like to sort some uprated brakes before adding more power. But dont want to go bankrupt in the process
Will try and give Alex a call to see what would be best for my needs and how much its going to cost me. :)

R32/S3 is a good place to start. ~400quid for everything :happy2:

Already have the same as S3. Car is a 2010 Cupra R :ashamed:

Ahh ok. :happy2:
Next steps up then would be
NQSBBK 4pot boxster caliper over 312mm disc http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,13985.0.html
Porsche 996 Turbo 4 pots over 350mm disc.. http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,42137.0.html

Cheers for that!! :happy2:
-
DB9 and 362mm floating kit is £1900 with pads. That's with grooved discs, drilled for some crazy unknown reason are more.

Still looking great.
Currently using Pagid Blues. Can't remember if I'm currently using oem or superglue racing but they performed fantastically.
Haven't got around to doing the MC upgrade but seems to perform great without.

Can this kit be used with the cheaper 362mm AP discs?
Also anyone know if they will go under pescaras with/without spacers?
