Title: Chris’s first MK 5 GTI
Post by: BaldwinGTI on March 25, 2018, 01:46:34 pm
So last week I bought a 2007 gti in silver.
I’ve followed to forum since I decided to buy the golf. I used to be quite into my cars before work/ wife/ kids took over. Decided to step back into it. I’ve had a good trawl through previous posts.. but I’m sure I’ll ask some of the same old questions for those that have been on here a lot longer.

I’m going to use this thread to keep a log of work done, either garage or by myself. I’m kind of an OEM look as much as possible for visual mods. But hoping to hit around 250/260 bhp with this motor.

The photos are from the cars advert and will get some more when I’ve given it a nice clean.
Although for anyone in the know..
Does it look like it’s been lowered already or is that the standard height? (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180325/e11e66ecd922296c3d1b4da77f4c2776.jpg)
And these alloys.. are they monzas? And do we think they came from factory like this? As I actually prefer the diamond cut and want to look at getting it done retrospectively. If this is possible.

Welcome. Looks like a lovely spec. They are the monza alloys powder coated. Personally, I like them and they suit the car  :happy2:

Thanks. It’s got an excellent spec to be honest. It’s also as clean as I believe it can be for a 10 year old car.
So am I right in thinking that all monzas can from factory diamond cut? And then people had them powder coated instead or refurbish the diamond finish. I do quite like the colour actually but the n/s front is quite beat up.

Cheers. Based on that I doubt I’ll drop it. It already feels like it’s on rails when pushing it. It’s comfy on the motorway, but it is bumpy on the very poor local road.

Looks very tidy pal.
Hopefully be getting something similar in summer. Plans sound best way in my opinion, can’t beat OEM+  :happy2:

I’m really pleased about the sunroof. For some reason a sunroof feels really old school these days.

Nothing wrong with old school. Bring back the 80's and early 90's when almost every car had a sunroof.

New key fobs fitted and obviously my VW showy key rings
Although I didn’t realise they would be missing the VW badge, so I’ve had to order it this week.

Little wash this afternoon when I had a spare moment.. has highlighted a few paint issues I didn’t spot at first. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180407/d754aff14d8d04e4e781cd30cf1ebc66.jpg)

Judging by your username and the title of this thread, your name is Chris Baldwin...?

Just thought I'd say hello as another Silver Mk5 GTi owning (albeit a Pirelli eddition)Chris Baldwin... haha

Been quiet on this post. Had an accident in the car a week or so ago. Only found out today the insurers are going to repair. They were hinting at a write off. Apparently it’ll take around 3 weeks to repair!!
Once it’s back I can finally look to fit the part I bought and start making further plans.

Shocked they were looking at writing this off. Apparently they write anything off these days.

Small update with some photos to follow.

Car back from body shop. All the repairs are done and are top notch. Also got a brand new rear tyre out of it, a blinder really as it was on the markers. Getting another put on the near side to match.

Replaced my cam follower. Was easier than I thought. I followed good advice off of this forum and also used the ecs tuning video. I had the dreaded banjo bolt. Which tbh wasn’t as bad as I thought. I used masking tape to put the spline bit into a box spanner.

Also had to hack my rear brake dust shield off yesterday. Again used great advice of this forum. Jacked car up and used a set of tin snips. Took me about 30mins or so. I’m no mechanic but what a useless piece of engineering. Especially the fact that you can’t replace them without taking the hub off.. it almost as if they did it on purpose.

Hopefully getting pressed plates delivered next week.

Nice mk5, I've recently got another myself but this time I went for a TDi as it came up for decent money! I see your planning on getting an R-tech map. I cant recommend Nick enough you're definitely making the right choice! My old mk5 gti was stage2+ from R-tech and to say it was a lot of fun is an understatement. Still regret selling it 4 years later.

Great news on the repair. Glad it got sorted in the end mate.

Had a similar issue with my rear backing plate rattling constantly. Ended up putting spacers in to get the bolts to stick on to the car as they were all corroded.
