Title: Stage 2, R Tech, AKS, MK6 GTI, DSG fun.
Post by: ReDBull on May 26, 2016, 01:14:33 pm
Hello everyone.
I've been looking for a new family bus for a little while now to replace the Tigiuan that's ok but not much fun. I've manage to track down a MKVI Golf GTI, DSG, leather and 49k miles on the clock which I picked up on Monday. Having owned a MK5 GTI with DSG 10 years ago it a car I always regretted selling (due to kids!).
The first thing I did after placing the deposit was ring T tech to book in for a stage 1 map. Then track down a Revo intake from TSR. I've got a VW DAB, satnav head unit to fit at some point along with cruise control. That was my plans for the car. Keep it standardish.  :happy2:

Only problem is that I've got the modifying disease that I can't cure. So I've ended up buying some 18 wheels and tyres, turbo back exhaust. Next on the list to buy is a bigger intercooler, Polar fis and sort of the suspension.

Sod standard. Tasteful modifications, with the right parts, and good software, is the way forward. Sounds like you're on the right track!

Panel alignments look fine to me mate. Wouldn't worry, main dealer wouldn't sell you a bodge repair jobbie
Rear LED lights can be got easily on eBay used, or if you want new from Carsystems. Around £330 odd new with adapters. Massive difference to the rear  :happy2:

I didn't and don't mean to sound horrible regards my message as it's a nice car. The off side looks slightly out where the bonnet meets the wing and looks a little raised and headlight to wing top corner also looks like a bigger gap or I'm just looking at it from the wrong angle. near side front bumper looks ill fitted and different shade to wing?.

Sorry to have to say this but you'd be surprised at what the main dealer sell to customers.

Modding is a good fun I guess and not as bad as some habits! I'm looking forward to my 18" arriving as well, plus I'll need them for the brakes. I've got a very clear idea of what I want to achieve with this car. Which isn't something I've had in the past.  So hopefully I won't get board mid project.
You'll love your GTI when you pick it up. They are such a good all round car. There are cars that do things much better than the GTI but none that come close to doing everything as well as a GTI.
The REVO intake is a great bit of kit. I went for it as its been proven to give good gains. Also Niki of R tech said it was the one to go for. It fit well, great build quality and didn't sound to loud.
The only problem with the REVO is that they are very difficult to get hold of at the moment. Apparently REVO have had manufacturing issues and at present they are not being made. I had to ring around a few REVO dealers to find one in stock. I got the last one TSR had. My next choice would of been Evoms which also comes highly recommended but is supposed to be a bit loader.
Hope you enjoy your car when you pick it up  :happy2:

I bought them new on eBay from a Chinese seller. They came very fast, great communication from the seller. Plus the sell put on the invoice that I payed a lot less for them so I didn't pay a huge amount of import duty. I also bought a rear spolier extension that I've not fitted yet. I really can't complain at the price I bought them for but the fit of the side skirts isn't the best.

:jumping: So I had a trip to AKS yesterday. As usual thanks to Alex for his first class work and problem solving!  :happy2:
So on went the Relentless 3.5" dp which needed a bit of work by Alex to mate up to the BCS cat back. Then a Peron inter cooler, TTRS calipers, Mintex pads and AP discs/Vagbremtechnic fitting kit.
Needless to say it was a different car that I drove home! I also had a chat with Alex about suspension setups and booked myself back in with him in September to get it sorted.
Next up is a trip to R Tech next week for Niki to work his magic.  :pomppomp:

Great Mods BCS  and 3.5 dp good combo
TTRS  brakes means it will stop well
revo the best intake
Peron also one of the best intercollers but all these must have cost a hell of alot of ££££££
let us know what it makes next week at Rtech

I basically had a budget to buy a car and it was a toss up between a 6R or buy a GTI and spend the difference on mods.
The GTI does everything I want as a family bus so will be staying for a while. This time I had a plan of what I want the car to be and have spoken to a few people about which mods are best. So I've just got on with it and given up on the idea of just going stage 1 as that was never going to happen! Doing it this way will get it done early on in my ownership and I won't get bored half way through the mods and give up. Plus bolt on mods are easy to remove and sell if I do get bored.
I'll post the results up of the trip to R Tech when I have them :happy2:

You've done some good mods. Should be a very nice result!

How did you get on?

So yesterday didn't quite go to plan! It looks like in the past my car has had some form of APR/REVO map on it. Niki fought it was likely a demo map. Unfortunately that meant that Niki was locked out of the ECU and unable to upload his map. He's worked out how to get around the issue but it meant that I had to leave my car with him and go home in a loaner.
So hopefully I should have it back and fully mapped today. I also had a chat about K04's and K04 hybrids......

Brain surgery in progress!!!

Im going k04 at the moment. what did niki say about mapping them as I have the same engine as you.

I bet you cant wait for that phone call to pick her up

The age our cars are at most will have some sort of history. So much for the one lady owner history!!!!
He said he's done a couple and they respond well. He's got 3 more booked in including a hybrid. Apparently the injectors are the limiting factor as they max out around 380bhp. Also that with his linear maps wheel spin isn't as big an issue as you'd think.
He's managed to recover the ECU and put a standard a standard map back on. This morning Niki's looking into some issues I've had with the DSG. Then hopefully he'll have time to look into the engine map. I don't need the my car back until mid next week and I've told Niki no rush.

Here's the graph
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftt26%2Fredbull2525%2FC068EB19-DCC5-42D4-975E-DBBA8D6FB435_zpsim44gmdy.jpg&hash=1d6ea2e0dfa576e8f66d83ffb4b6e6dea5daba9a)
I'm over the moon with how it drives. Niki has sorted out the issues I've had with the DSG. He also spent time intergrateing the DSG with the throttle. The throttle response is nice and linear and given the hike in power and torque. Traction is much the same as with the standard map. For tiny little turbo it certainly shifts now!!!
The service I have experience from the R Tech team is spot on. I couldn't or wouldn't expect any more from them. And I'm a bloody fussy bugger with who works on my car. That also goes for Alex at AKS as well

Nice graph! Every mk6 I've seen done at R-Tech builds torque later than a k03 mk5, but seems to hold it better at the same time. Enjoy.

Thanks matey I will. The power graph is only part of the picture. The DSG map and how the two work together are something else. The maps are so much smoother than the standard maps :happy2:

It certainly was. I had a good drive again today and the map is a work of art. It drives so much better in traffic and then when you get out of town and the road opens up . It just works SO well. I was worried that I'd struggle with wheel spin and understeer but not in the slightest.
It's a very polished well rounded package give I'm still on the standard suspension. I have to say that the brakes scary me at times with how much power they have. They're one mod that poeple should put high up there list!!! :happy2:

Thanks I'm really pleased with how the carbon parts are coming together. I'm booked in at a body shop as some t@@t has take a chunk out of my rear bumper in a car park. They are also going to be fitting some other carbon parts while it in with them. I'm hoping to have it done before VW action.

Usually around 380 is. I guess it depends on what mods you have and how good it flows. I did ask Rtech if they were mapping K04 TSI engine yet, and they told me it was still in development. things may have changed now though

Well I've been very busy with work and looking after the kids since the last time I posted. Oh and enjoying driving my car! When I first got my car back post remap. I was happy with the he gains but going on past mapping experiences, I was expecting a bit more dram. The more I've driven the car however the more I appreciate the power delivery and drivability. Considering I'm still on the standard suspension  :ashamed: it all works togeather very well. If a little scruffy on the limits. I had a tussle with a V10 M5 last night on the way home. Thoses things are fast in a straight line. But he was slowing me down in the twisty bits. The big brakes helping for sure.
On the brake front. I'm loving them still and have got used to how violently they can slow you down. One issue I have been having though is the brake balance. Mainly due to the tiny little rear solid discs. So I've tracked down a set of 8P S3 rear brakes. I'll need new discs and pads but they should help sort things out.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftt26%2Fredbull2525%2FB6A28ADB-4A82-45B1-8064-447708D396DD_zps5pheufhr.jpg&hash=479cb0f691a59ab54a83745d95f59a72710323e9)

I've also bought a K04 turbo and WMI kit to be fitted at some point in the New Year.

I'm also booked into AKS for H&R coilovers, front and rear ARB's front ALK and the Polfis at the end of the month. I'm then going to try and stop spend and enjoy the driving! As far as K04 figures I'd think around 380 HBO and 400 lbft of torque. I have a set of S3 injections but Niki doesn't think I'll need them.

The S3 injectors aren't compatible with TSI engines, just with TFSI.

Also, you don't need them to make the power you want. Your stock injectors and HPFP can handle +400 BHP.

Your engine needs the revised cam chain tensioner and chain, inlet valves cleaning, PCV delete with catch can, uprated dog bone mount, 3'' TBE system with sports cat or decat and a good CAI to go a long with the K04. The WMI is always a good upgrade too. Should be a great car to drive. :drinking:

Thanks for the info on the injectors. That's pretty much what Niki said, I'll got these S3  injections up for sale now. I'm going to get the cam chain tensioner checked to see if it has been changed as that is what I was told by the main dealer when I bough he car. I've already got a 3.5" dp,de cat and BCS cat back fitted. Along with the dog bone mount, REVO intake and Peron intercooler. I'll have a look into the PVC delete and catch tank. Is the blanking plate the same on the TFSI as TSI? I really do know very little about these engines  :ashamed:

No, the blanking plate is very different on the TSI engines. You'll have to check what's the best for your budget.

Definitely get the chain tensioner done. our engines are prone to these failing. I think I paid 450 for mine last month. better safe than sorry. You dont need a PCV delete or catch tank but its optional. Get a decent fmic, as the turbo will run hot with stage 2 k04 boost. Your induction kit will need a 25mm take of welded to it for where the DV to intake pipe woild link to. Also the turbo will need a take off welded to it as it isnt a direct fit. Your on the right track though.

Yeah, a PCV delete isn't required but retards the carbon build up in the inlet valves.

Update time since my visit to AKS on Wednesday.
On went H&R coilovers, front and rear ARBS, front anti lift kit and Polar FIS.
She's fitting very nicely now and I'm loving how she looks. One of my big worries was that the ride quality would be ruined. However it's not. It feels very similar to standard, slightly firmer but rides the bumps better than the standard set up. Alex assured me before they were fitted that I'd like the coilovers. And I'm very impressed with them. High speed corners now it just turns in. No more having to wrestle with the car. If anyone is looking for a good usable road set up I'd highly recommend these components. Alex didn't have time to set up the suspension so I'm going to go get a standard alignment soon. I don't want anything to aggressive due to the miles I do and the roads I drive.

I left the K04 with Alex so he can modify it to fit the TSI. I need to have a word with Niki about when and how long he needs my car for. Then I can get booked in to get it fitted.

Good news that the coilovers aren't harsh. It's always a bit of a heart in mouth moment when you first drive it after having them fitted. I remember going from Koni springs & dampers to Weitec coilovers on an old car, and it actually rode better 20mm further down on the Weitecs! A pleasant surprise for you I'm sure.

I think with the TFSI k04 mapping Niki has the car for a week, so I'd imagine it'll be at least that much for you.

Turning into a very nice build this. Nice work.

Thanks. It's funny you should say that as it's only the Relentless DP that's has been causing any problems. I should of gone for a full BCS system!

Thanks. I'm really pleased with how it's turned out as a package. It doesn't feel like modified cars I've had in the past. The power delivery is so smooth and the ride isn't harsh at all. It feels better to live with than the standard car. The only thing that gives it away is how violent the brakes are.

What kind of r results are people get with K04's fitted to the TSI?

AFAIK you'll get 350-380 BHP, depending on the engine and mods. With your setup I'd expect around 380 BHP.

Maybe more with meth.....

Im stock but collecting parts for k04. still not sure if i should wait for all my k04 parts or go stage 2 in between.
With the coilovers, did it disconnect the DCC or does it include the plug for it?

Since I've last been on I've been really enjoying my car. To the point that I've hardly used the 911. Unfortunately though due to my family getting bigger I'm having to put it up for sale.  More than likely I'll put it back to standard and sell the parts off separately. I'm absolutely gutted to be doing this. I envisaged keeping this car for many years. Which is why I spent the money on mods that I have. I'm also gutted that I didn't get the K04 and WMI fitted!!!

Absolutely. I don't want to see but it's just not big enough now. I have a plan to spend some money on the 911 then hopefully get a 7R estate within two years.

I've also recently had a full service inc DSG service and replaced the coilpacks for R8 items. She's running really well!
