Title: The Wifey-Mobile: The GTi She Didn't Want...
Post by: FJ1000 on September 27, 2015, 11:55:54 pm
I'd been thinking about a MK5 GTi DSG for a while, but made my mind up after this:

Wife: "You're going to kill me...I'm so sorry"
Me (senses danger to my RS4's wheels): You didn't, not again...
Wifey: I was turning left into our road, and there was another car...and and
Me: 3 times in a month!!! Aggghghhhg!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I bought her a GTi.

A good one too.

5dr DSG in good nick, well looked after, with loads of options: leather, factory wingback seats, xenons, cruise, nav, MFSW, sunroof, rear parking sensors. A few pics from the autotrader advert, from when I bought it in August 2015:

Her reaction: why did you buy that?? I was fine driving your car!

Treated it to a thorough clean once home and took these. Shiny  :happy2:

Then the modifications began...

First off, swapped the xenon bulbs for some 6000K ones from EM Tuning, and some LED sidelights (shown next to the standard ones):

Next, plasti-dipped the front and rear VW badges, the red grill stripe, and the front GTI logo:

Then, lowered it on VW Raccing springs. The ride height is just where I want it, and has barely affected the ride quality. Highly recommended:

And finally, for now, picked these up on ebay.de, just waiting for them to arrive:

Things that I should be doing soon:
- Bluefin (already got the bluefin handset, just need to reset)
- Fit interior LED kit I've bought
- Tint front windows
- Lamin x headlights and spray tint tail lights

Such a great looking and spec'd car , i think u should leave the aesthetic stuff except ride height and it looks fantastic .not a fan of the wheels or stuff with the the front grill.

Sorry just being honest. :happy2:

 :sad1:

Thanks for your honesty! That's fair enough, not everyone has the same taste! The great thing about plastidip is I can reverse the grill mods in seconds if I choose to.

I'm such a big fan of the speedlines, I've got another (19") set sat in the garage for my RS!! Well I actually bought them for the golf, then I saw how stretched the tyres would be on a 9" wide rim, and the tyres on them were already the perfect size for the RS and brand new. So, had them refurbed and powder coated in a gun metal grey...

At the moment, yeah I probably do! It really is a hoot to drive especially with the DSG box.

I'm glad to report she quite likes it now (apart from the monzas).

Very nice. I'm a big fan of the Speedlines on the Mk5. Are they 18's?

The gunmetal centres look fantastic m9xxr, that's how I'd do them too. Are yours 19's?

Got the speedlines on (ET54, so 8mm H&R hubcentric spacers front, 10mm rear)

Also smoked the rear lights - took the clusters out then 4 coats of hycote lens spray

The smoked lights aren't to my taste personally.

One of the things I've been meaning to get to is tinting the front windows....getting done tomorrow. Car was looking good when I dropped it off so grabbed a couple of pics while I was waiting for my uber to arrive:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F10%2F06%2Fde09e872644ad0d36e6ac942cdde6829.jpg&hash=bcda1dbb94b1b65c1ad06d077d9c6c4510fbc4c4)

I reckon I could get away with 15mm rear spacers, might give it a go to fill the arches better.

Been a while since I posted some pics, so here we have a few from Donington on Monday. Fun day, but unfortunately it didn't end all that well!

After my bro-in-law put a hole in the sump and damaged a wheel on the sausage kerbs at the chicane. Luckily, found a replacement wheel on ebay, and no other damage apart from the sump. Could have been bad if we tried to run the engine after the sump started leaking oil. Should all be fixed later today.  :happy2:

Nice looking MK5 with some nice touches, however I'm sure your wife does not like those seats, I have a lovely set of standard leather front seats which I am more than happy swap

Hahahha! Nice try. Although she probably wouldn't notice if the seats were swapped. I don't think she'd notice that the car has now been bluefin'd either if I didn't tell her.

Do you know what, on the track that day as my bro in law lost control the thought that went through my head was "if he stacks it, and it's a write off, how am I going to find another GTi with the same seats!?".

Luckily he didn't stack it, but he'll never live this down now. The whole family has been taking the piss out of him non stop, which has been quite entertaining. "Oh no Jeff is turning right, watch out!!!!"

I'm pleased to report that the car was back on the road by Wednesday, thanks to the speedy work by Volks Autos in Sutton.

By way of apology to the Golf for the hard time it had last week...

Had a pioneer Apple CarPlay head unit fitted, with iPhone cable run to the compartment by the handbrake. Installer did a nice neat job...the surround fits perfect too.

All interior lights swapped for LEDs too, and fitted one of Olsen-72's USB sockets.

Also found a dial in the glovebox....is that what I think it is?

It's to enable/disable the vent which lets aircon into the glovebox. Good for chocolate bars in summer. That's about it.

Ha, thanks for that, started getting my hopes up it was refrigerated and I just hadn't noticed!

At least my yorkie bars will be safe now

You can use it for a small bottle of water, or something like it. The glovebox isn't really big enough to put there much.

Cheers, so do I! I wish I got the same unit for my other car. I got a more expensive pioneer unit (AVH-X8700BT) but needn't have bothered, the SPH-DA120 does everything I need. I think it looks better too.

I got it installed by Safensound in Thornton Heath, chap called David. I highly recommend him; very diligent, wants to do a good job, and reasonable prices.

He did me a good deal on the headunit itself as a one-off, as I've had a few things done by him. On top of the unit cost, he charged me £69 for the fascia, steering control module and aerial booster + £49 installation.

I'm actually from Dublin so I'll probably get it done in halfords. So if you had a choice again and both the AVH-X8700BT and the SPH-DA120 cost the same what would you go for?

My only issue here is that Halfords won't be able to supply a fascia, control module and aerial booster... I doubt you have much info on these parts do you?

Ha, yeah that might be a problem.

The Fascia etc. all came from connects2 - If you have a look on their website, all the parts you need should be there.

The SPH-DA120 is a smaller screeen, and doesn't have android auto. Those are really the only drawbacks that were relevant to me when I was deciding on a headunit a few months back when I upgraded my RS4. After deciding on the AVH-X8700BT, I didn't get on with android auto when I did try it, and ended up switching my phone to an iphone anyway! There are other differences in spec, but they weren't things that concerned me; no CD player on the SPH-DA120, or USB input, or capability to add pioneer navigation.

If you have an iphone, I'd get the cheaper model. It looks better in the dashboard anyway, cleaner lines and doesn't protrude.

So just had a run down to Halfords (should be working but I have a fast car  :signLOL:) and the guy at the counter for the first time ever impressed me! He knew every single part required from your list without me saying a word. He then wrote down all of the serial numbers etc. and it turns out Halfords can supply it all.

Fascia DFP-703 €25

Yeah that seems a fair price, very close to what I paid actually.

Did they say where they would run the USB cables for the phone connection?

Have you tried any car audio installers for a price?

New private reg for the Mrs (birthday June 12th, and name is Sofia)

Also gave it a wash and a couple of coats of jetseal - great stuff.

6 months since an update!

It was mostly uneventful till a couple of weeks ago (apart from some maintenance stuff, inc new shocks all round, and top mounts).

Then, after I resigned from my old job, and had some time on my hands before starting at the new place, I started looking for things to do....

So in the last couple of weeks, the car has had the following bits done:

- Nearly new 18" BBS CH-R, on new GY Eagle F1 tyres
- Revo induction kit
- Genuine R32 rear
- BCS turbo back exhaust (sport non-powervalve, 100 cel cat, black tips).
- Votex front splitter
- Open fog grilles

I owe most of those bits to @GTIRichard - thanks very much mate!

Pleased with the way the car looks now.

Next up; brakes! Got my eye on some brembo 18z calipers, with 350mm discs.

Really do like the look of that, I have to swear at you though  After seeing that car in 5-Door, Black and with Anthracite BBS CH-R's I am now 50/50 split on going for Silver BBS VZ's OR Satin Anthracite BBS VZ'S on my Diamond Black Pearl Edition 30

It looks so right in that Colour combination!

Ahhhhhhhh

With regards to silver or grey wheels on a black car; I like both, and have done both. In terms of my current preference though, I think pics of the other car answer that question:

Drive one and have someone else drive the other so you can see it in motion

Though I'm guessing you run one or both on Shell V-Power or equivalent so would be expensive - but hey the phrase smiles per gallon comes to mind and this is almost double the smiles per gallon   :signLOL:

Nice cars btw

Haha, well I guess I've had similar experience when the wife and I have been in convoy, but not since the golf has had all the recent stuff done.

I don't think I'll ever see the RS in motion, as I don't let anyone else drive it!

Went with the GTi for the Nandos run!

6 months since the last update!!?

I gave the car some TLC and took some decent pics so thought I'd update this thread. It'll be in a few parts, so bear with me...

I'd been thinking about upgrading the brakes as the OEM brakes seemed pretty poor, but then after my wife complained about them too, that was enough of an excuse to go for it!

I looked at a number of options, and decided the Brembo 18z 6pot upgrade was the best bang for your buck option. I got hold of a used kit, including the adapter bolts, braided lines and 350mm merc discs. Decided to buy some drilled discs instead though. I then spotted some R32 rear brakes up for sale in the classifieds and had to have them! Got some drilled discs for the rear too.

Had the whole lot fitted, topped up the ATE typ200 fluid, and there was one slight issue...the front wheels wouldn't clear the calipers!

The garage managed to get hold of some 12mm spacers, which allowed just enough clearance. However, the ET47 wheels were now effectively ET35. Queue loads of rubbing!!

I could've tried to make the BBS's work if I increased camber and rolled arches, but I decided to just change the wheels. I looked at the usual big brake clearance options (OZ wheels or Team Dynamics), but neither did it for me. After a forum member tipped me off to US based Neuspeed, I got in contact with them about their newest design and confirmed they'd clear the 18z's (they checked vs a scale diagram of the brakes). Ordered through Awesome, and they arrived from the US a couple of weeks later.

I got them fitted and they look great! Sold the BBS wheels.

One slight problem though - they exposed just how rusty the hubs of the new MTEC discs were! I neglected to notice when I ordered the discs that for £25 I could've got them coated silver or black. Doh.

That brings us to today...

This is how the car looked when I started:

And the rusty hubs:

I gave the car a clean and got started.

Sanded off the rust as best I could, ready for paint

After paint on one corner. Repeat for the other 3...

While the paint was drying, I attended to some scratches on the wing, polished up with my DA. The wife is adamant she has nothing to do with them...

I also gave the interior a clean, and sealed with chemical guys jetseal.

Thanks guys!

True - I didn't actually talk about the brake setup! In a word: epic.

They just feel so strong, with amazing bite. They inspire a lot of confidence, whereas the OEM brakes did the opposite! I'd have to say they actually feel more powerful than the brakes on my RS4 - although they obviously are trying to stop a much heavier car, and the pads take some time to warm up.

If I compare to the RS- the new GTi setup does take a little getting used to; the RS4 brakes are more progressive and the first couple of times I apply the brakes in the GTi, I find myself stopping a lot quicker than I meant to!

All in all though, it really pulls together the whole driving experience of the GTi, and was the one area that was really lacking before. It's a hoot to drive now.

Thanks!

They went for £650 for a quick sale, as they are (without refurb) and collected. I could have got more, but then would have had the hassle of getting the kerbing fixed, putting up an ad, and possibly posting them. Went to a guy on audisport that had a wanted ad up for 18" BBS wheels.

Great to know that the setup pleases you too. :drinking:

I never felt that lack of progressiveness since the other big brakes that I know are the R32 front brakes that bite with even  less pedal pressure. :signLOL:

Went for a drive yesterday with some friends to the mountains. Awesome fun!  :driver:

Time to upgrade the audio!

I already had a pioneer SPH-DA120 headunit installed, but everything else OEM.

On a recent trip to NY for work, I picked up a JL XD500 amp for the GTi, and a JL TW series sub for my RS4...which means I could pinch the JL 10" W0 sub from the RS4. I already had a custom sub box sat in the garage which I bought off eBay.

All got installed yesterday by David at SafeNsound (who I used last time). Can't recommend him enough. He's fully mobile now, so came to me to do the work.

So setup now is

- Pioneer SPH-DA120
- JL XD500 3 channel under the passenger seat, powering OEM front speakers and the sub
- Dynamat in the front doors
- Rear speakers disconnected
- JL 10" W0 sub in a custom box, to keep the boot space

Needs a vacuum!

It sounds so much better!! By retaining the OEM speakers (which are good but just need better amplification) and fitting the dynamat, keeps away any annoying rattles. I still need to tweak settings to my taste, but a worthwhile upgrade
