Title: How to: VW OEM Rear View Camera Install
Post by: SteveP on December 18, 2009, 10:55:29 pm
Well hear we go, the first draft of my how to guide.

Firstly thanks to the people behind the CamelCC and my-gti.com guides, without them this would have been a lot more difficult.  :notworthy: :notworthy:

There are still some more / better pictures to be added but this should start to give you an idea of what's involved in the installation. If you have any questions about the install please post them in the thread or if you want some help sourcing the parts or completing the phyiscal install then drop me a PM  :happy2:

What does it do:

Here's a couple of pic's of the badge/camera

Camera activated: -

Step 1 - Creating the Loom

Here's a very basic wiring diagram to show where everything goes: -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fkk207%2FStevep_010%2Fwires.jpg&hash=4337ff6275f6dd27d8063be951877fb628c9eaa7)

Here's an overview showing the approx lengths of each of the runs between connections: -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fkk207%2FStevep_010%2FIMG_3085.jpg&hash=ce0dec281091dad3a22ad595822a9ab4acef16d9)

The red 12v live feed wire I added around 700mm to this and then cut down when connecting it to the cable being run from the fuse box.

Connectors 1J0 972 923 & 1J0 972 212 and the repair wires 000 979 133 & 000 979 129 for the reverse signal pick-up: -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3073.jpg&hash=726c568fb564b5cd31f3dd593bcf5f82abef0cc0)

Connector 1J0 973 802 and repair wire 000 979 132 for the pick-up of the original latch connections: -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3077.jpg&hash=5e281acb3976a2abdbccaba5c87591fac11fbdee)

With this connector remember to move the purple plastic prongs in the direction shown to lock off the wires into place: -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3080.jpg&hash=e15c68cb348ce418d48066195a15687cb427d7e3)

Connector 4B0 973 712 and repair wires 000 979 131 for connection to the latch connections on the new camera badge unit: -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3081.jpg&hash=8ed05b6bd3aefda14a9c0a6da743ea0bc66ece4a)

Again the purple plastic needs to be moved in the direction shown to lock off the wires: -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3082.jpg&hash=ca46afe22106f671026432719a7cbd574db9579e)

Connector 3B0 972 722 and repair wire 000 979 131 for connection to the camera power side of the new camera badge: -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3084.jpg&hash=b05c1516195e6ecc26d71c89ec9ad475260985fc)

Once the cable has been made up I would recommend testing it with a multi meter first. Then it can be wrapped with the OEM webbing, and here is the finished article.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fkk207%2FStevep_010%2FIMG_3091a.jpg&hash=b7cbad4df0ec86c3d24f0cd4b93ac85438aa47e6)

Step 2 - Connecting the Coax Cable to RNS-510

Pop off the top vent cover using a trim tool

Towards the back of the vent unit remove the single T20 screw.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3042.jpg&hash=c0de54258b1f00532d6d9c00bc6ee373232bc3c9)

Again using the trim tool lift out the inner vent.

Now remove the two T20 screws holding the rest of the plastic surround in place

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3043.jpg&hash=0f411661b2ed61eb10c87b920a158e7752725395)

Lift out the top part of the plastic surround with the trim tool.

Now gently prize the upper and lower trim sections apart with the trim tool and lift away the whole section.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3037.jpg&hash=f80a3330f4f6794e03c13498071efc2e3d5b8648)

Now remove the two T20 screws hold the top corners of the lower trim piece in place.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3033.jpg&hash=b6ae01c98b854ba3e67df7b1b5fde915aea372d3)

Now working from the bottom upwards gently lift out the lower trim with the trim tool.

Then remove the 4 T20 screws holding the RNS510 in place.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3022.jpg&hash=5a10f51d33958cb9f3e21da550ae9c71b906ca09)

Now connect the long coax cable to the back of the RNS

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3024.jpg&hash=44a2941bda3b25ce6d04ff46d44684a9a2e352a3)

Remove the steering wheel all the way inwards and downwards and pop off the trim piece in between the steering wheel and clocks.

Now remove the two T20 screws holding the clocks in place (locations shown below). Now move the steering wheel all the way outwards and gently slide the clocks out.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3030.jpg&hash=f12cb13316ae6f88d7cca9a776c3ea8b8b30e5bf)

The Coax cable can now be feed through from the RNS, up behind the clock connector and out to the fuse box (shown with the dotted line).

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3031.jpg&hash=85fa2df55a4de89086b9dac86b876fc915e4d7bc)

Now refit the clocks, RNS and trim/vent in reverse order of above.

Step 3 - Connecting the 12v perm live

To do, fuse box guide for adding a new circuit.

Step 4 - Running the Coax and 12v perm live Cables to the rear

Prepare to run the two cables to the rear of the car by lifting the sill trim(s) with a trim removal tool.

Now remove the right hand plastic covering to the side of the rear seats, if you drop down the rear bench you will find a small panel behind it is two T20 screws, remove these and then the panel will pop off. (best to have a magnetic screw driver for these).

Now release the right hand parcel shelf support, this is attached by one screws under the joint between the lower edge of the support and top of the inside edge of the boot trim (just inside the boot by the seal). The support can now be pulled away, it is attached with three white threaded stud which take a reasonable amount of force to shift.

Next is the C pillar trim, first remove the long central trim at the top of the boot opening, this will reveal a 10mm plastic nut, remove this. Now pop out the airbag plastic label from the other side of the c pillar trim and remove the T20 screw behind it. The C pillar trim can now be popped off, again this will require reasonable force with the trim tools.

You can now run the two cables up to the rear of the car. Make sure these are securely fastened along the way up to the rear and are kept clear of the seat belt mechanism.

I feed the cables out and behind the brace at the back of the C pillar

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3061.jpg&hash=2d917a387b5f574cc12d48483a88c4ab2ab515cf)

Step 5 - Boot Lid Trim Removal

Now remove the lower boot lid trim by firstly taking out the two slightly hidden phillips screws for the handles

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3071.jpg&hash=9d53887add8008dbdd41a3519f7477dc8f55a25c)

Now with a trim removal trim work you way along the bottom of the trim "popping" it off, again it will take some reasonable force as it uses some metal spring clips. Once it has been removed pop off the upper window trim, this should take far less force.

Step 6 - Removal of rear wiper and existing Badge

To remove the rear wiper from the outside pop off the plastic cap from the end of the wiper arm and remove the 13mm nut, the wiper arm should now pull off. Then from inside disconnect the washer fluid feed and electrical connector, next remove the 3 x 10mm bolts holding the wiper mechanism in place. It may take some wiggling to free the wiper mechanism but it will eventually come free.

Next remove the electrical connection and three screws holding the rear badge in place

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3064-1.jpg&hash=882393b7cd24a1ab9557f5f7f3556088e7a319a3)

The badge will now twist right and can be puled out.

Now the metal work needs to be trimmed the measurements for the cuts are 60mm horizontal and 55mm vertical.

Before cutting it's adviseable to pop out the electrical wires that are clipped in place near where you will be cutting.

Here is a very rough outline for the cut: -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3064-2.jpg&hash=482c5bc77738d7504b7dee6f220609c830fa3da4)

Once cut grind back the sharp edges and cover the bare metal with some primer or a touch-up pen.

Step 7 - Feeding the cables and connecting the new

Now release the rubber channel between the boot lid and inner roof line, then feed the two cables up through hole in the inner roof line

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3060.jpg&hash=fdb876f28b06de99ad4229ea95d176c4f832ddde)

Remove the blue plastic cover from the end of the coax cable

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3062.jpg&hash=495f1ab8084dcbcd1908db116088c9ab51fa15a3)

Now feed the two cables through the rubber channel, i found compressing the channel ends together and pulling the cables through using a wire coat hangers was the easiest way.

Then feed cables through the outer hole of the boot lid

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3063.jpg&hash=2418f7cd5a52c271559725a4af8c13b784c7923f)

Re-install the plastic cover on the coax cable

Now connect the pre-made loom starting from the left hand side by connecting the reverse signal pick-up and secure the wires in place up to the left hand side of the new badge camera unit

Now install the new badge by twisting it into place and securing it with the three screws removed from the original badge.

Then attach the remaining three connections plug in connections on the new loom (start from the left the original badge signal pick-up (1), new badge lock connection (2) and camera power connector (3)).

Next connect the blue coax cable onto the right hand side of the badge (4) and connect the 12v live feed wire into the new loom.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3070-1.jpg&hash=dc25143a96a9d3acf3b30b0ffc2ad7d9285f1e63)

Finally connect the drain tube to outlet on the bottom of the new badge.

Step 8 - Re-installing the rear wiper

To be able to re-install the rear wiper one of the support arms has to be removed, this is the left hand lower arm.

My initial cut wasn't enough but the picture below shows the area to complete the cut

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3066.jpg&hash=be9d01eaff3e27830143ab5569c6100c15720670)

The rear wiper works fine when installed with the two arms.

Step 9 - Coding the RNS-510 & Testing

Open the Navigation (37) controller and select coding, then long coding helper, then in the forth block set bit 6 to on (shown as "Backup Camera Low"), close the long coding and saving the new coding. Reboot the RNS-510 by pressing the "<" & ">" & "i" button.

If not already connected, attach the 12v permanent feed into the fuse box.

Select reverse and as if by magic the image should appear on the screen  :happy2:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FCamera_Install%2FIMG_3065.jpg&hash=6b0eeb8d53b494c0f7bc30308aa3df2c3613e0a6)

Step 10 - Finishing up

Re-install the boot lid, Rear Windows Trim, C pillar cover, parcel shelf support and sill trims, making sure all cables are secured and won't get trapped in any of the trim clips.

RVC Install........................................Done  :innocent:

Excellent work, and a superb DIY. I just thought of one thing; Hoe about the mk 6 rear wiper, if you don't feel like cutting one supportarm off, will it be possible to use the one from the 6??

The Mk6 one is quiet different as it doesn't include the washer jet in the wiper arm anymore, but I like the thinking  :happy2:

Steve would it be possible you could put the prices next to the part numbers,  would give people an idea of what it cost and then your excellent write up will show the rest.

I love this mod, would be top of my list if I had a GTi.  I was kinda hoping Mr Hedge would have done it by now so I could have a look at it.

One design change that occured on the MK6 is that the rear badge is actually slightly lower in the boot lid.

Mate, awesome guide so far. I saw the other forumite who had done it (can't recall the name) and would have done it if I didn't have to cut bits of the car off.

Would you consider a downloadable PDF when the write-up's finished, so we can print it out and work on the car at the same time?

Make sure you fit the drain hose and point it to the offside of the car and into the inner skin of the door so that any water that gains access through the badge a) doesn't fall onto the lock assembly and b) enter the boot and start to fill the spare wheel well
l
Its not 100% necessary to remove the C pillar trim, you can feed the wire up the side, mine refused to budge without the threat of a crease forming

Don't be tempted to use a fused spur high than 5A, if the motor has any problems in the winter cold weather the fuse will blow before causing any more serious problems and it needs to be a permanent feed and not fed from the ignition if you want to gain access to the boot without the key in the ignition

The view from the camera at night is really good considering the lack of light from the tail lights and reversing light

Great write up. I was beginning to talk myself out of the RNS as Alpine and Kenwood units are so much cheaper, but i love the OEMness of the camera!

Am i right in thinking theres a cheaper camera that doesnt go in the VW badge? Anyone know where it is located?

Any photos of the boot after the mount triangle was cut away?

^^^ I am going to be doing another couple of installs soon so will improve the photo's and will get some better ones of the cutting of the boot triangle.

There are plenty of other cameras that can be used on the after market head units or with the RNS-510 by purchasing an expensive adapter from Kufatec, have a look at Hurdy's build thread for his camera on the Kenwood Double Din Headunit  :happy2:

The Kufatec IMA adaptor is rubbish, it doesn't always know that the car is in reverse, and when it does it spends the rest of the time saying that the camera isn't available at this time. If found it was working ok when I stopped for petrol, after filling up it would almost always say it wasn't available

I will update the thread properly in the next few days, but here is the revised setup for the drain tube to prevent the water building up in the boot or tailgate. Thanks to StokeBalloon for the heads up on this  :happy2:

Remove the plastic bung (which will be painted over) directly below on the badge in the tailgate and feed the drain tube up into the tailgate. (very tight fit)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fkk207%2FStevep_010%2Fb27b9c7a.jpg&hash=3eec9764b5a746c15a8f8d34214dbe667c75e616)

Using a 6mm tube connector

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fkk207%2FStevep_010%2F0496c185.jpg&hash=39fab4e636299bc8c3636431e4a15bc9f2577a89)

I join the Drain tube to some 5mm clear tubing

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fkk207%2FStevep_010%2F866424bd.jpg&hash=e4ab56060ee15403d7a157c27bb5ac4899b54336)

And attach to the outlet on the bottom of the badge

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fkk207%2FStevep_010%2F697edd7b.jpg&hash=7576e35b3144ccfa6fef021147c91e6835ba2bc1)

I also tied off the tubes with some cables ties too.

Any water will now run directly from the badge onto the top of the bumper  :happy2:

Rob, shaun's kit will include the piggy back fuse holder so it's plug and play if you don't want to remove the fuse box.

Otherwise if you want one of the repair wires listed in the my-GTI.com guide just drop me a PM as I have a few spares so will post you one out rather than paying a stealer  :happy2:

Ok got the kit today, just taken a look at the piggy bank fuse holder. Which location does this go into in the fuse box. I take it all I do once I've got the right location is plug in a 5a mini fuse.

Just realised this project is a little easier now I have a pre-made loom boot end that been proved good.

Ok I've completed my install and everythings working just as it should

Only points I'd note thats not covered in the install is that be careful when you tidy the new loom up in the hatch as if you cable tie them up too tight you pull the coax cable out of the badge and its a real PIA to but back in so much so that I had to take the badge back off the car (difficult angle).

Also I think Steve said when you remove the C pillar trim be careful not to drop the screw behind as I did despite using a mgnetic screwdriver as I had to take the rear seats out to retrieve it

I nearly hit a car in my works car park the other day I was about 2 inch from its front bumper cos I was just looking at the camera :innocent:

Does any one get the camera not activating now and again?  I have to reset the RNS to get it back on?

Heres another annoyance with RVC;

Quite often when I get in the car I have to reverse out of somewhere like my drive. If the car hasn't been started for a while you get the VW splash screen on for about 10-15 seconds (even if reverse is engaged). Anyway to speed up this splashscreen so I can see the RV quicker?

That's not a coding issue, that sounds like the 12v supply isn't connected correctly.

Hi Steve, Thanks for your reply, I used your site to fit camera I did this step by step, after making boot harness up I put meter on and double checked it, I put my Ross Tec on car but got (E234) short or ground will check again.
Should the boot open with the handle without coding ?

As Steve said, the badge needs 12v to operate the release

If you have vag-com then why don't you code it yourself

Thanks for any help with this.

I thought I answered your question in text messages

The Camera has Grey plug, all cameras with the Grey plugs require a module and extra wiring

http://www.carsystems.pl/vw-rear-emblem-camera-kit-retrofit-passat-b6-cc,id235.html

If your camera has a blue plug then it doesn't require a module

Thanks ed. I couldn't find any more information on it and didnt like to keep asking you. Will be hard trying to find a second hand module for sale. There no way around not using a module then, I can't change the grey connecter to a blue one? Or is that stupid.

Thanks

Hi Steve

Would like to know if you have installed the Retrofit rear view camera on a Golf 5, does the boot opening function still work if the car is not locked and what prevents the boot from not opening if the car is shifted into reverse and it’s not locked??

Hope to hear back.

Boot opening will work till you lock the car even with the ignition off (providing it has been wired up correctly)

quick question....
i have a loom that was supplied with the rvc
3 grey wires about a foot long ..1.has round loop connection for an earth
2.says steady fast and has a female terminal pin on the end(12v live i guess)
3rd one says signal wire with no connection just bare wire end but where can it go to????....too short to go to switch or to rear lamp...is there a cecm pin location for this wire to go or somewhere i can splice into??

any words of wisdom???

Hopefully someone can help with this. I bought a car that the previous owner had fitted a mk6 badge into. But when reverse is engaged the screen goes black on the 510, but the camera on the badge doesn't flip open. Also you can't open the boot using the handle only the key will open it off the solenoid. Any ideas as to if a wire has come loose. Sounds like 12v permanent might be the culprit??? Any advice appreciated.

Does sound like a 12v issue. Check the fuse or the wire if it's got 12v with a voltmeter.

This happened to me today a few times but fixed itself. Might be something to do with the snow and cold weather.

A super excellent write up... I want one!

Will this be just as easy with an RCD510?
