Title: Your driving pet peeves...
Post by: barelyrelevant on April 17, 2017, 05:31:34 pm
Thought this would be a good topic, especially as we are all into cars and driving.

My two biggies are:

1) People on your right not indicating to turn left at a roundabout  :fighting:

2) Being a passenger in a car when the driver is about 2 gears too high and labouring the engine at 1050rpm. Just change down a gear FFS! Also hear this a lot as a cyclist where people obviously haven't got the faintest idea about how to use a gearbox and they take about 50m to overtake you doing 20mph in 5th gear.

1. Cyclists
2. Cycle lanes

1. Drivers that turn right without indicating.
2. People that don't say 'thank you' at a zebra crossing.
3. Cyclists...Where do I start?!

Drivers in front that slow to a near stop, and THEN look right at roundabouts.

40 in a NSL.

40 in a NSL and braking at the slightest hint of nothing.

Cushions on the parcel shelf - BEWARE.

Car in front that qualifies for 'Pick the worst possible new car on the market' (Renault sh*tebox etc) - BEWARE.

Infuriatingly bad lane discipline on DC or MW. If you're in lane 2 or 3, you're supposed to be overtaking. No other reason. Do not be in lane 2 or 3 to roll along oblivious to other drivers and the whole ****ing point of having more than one lane. Get back over when you're done. Use your mirrors. Motorways are saturated with incompetence. No wonder we get pileups.

And just to add, no, I don't sit up those ^ drivers' arses flashing my lights. I sit in a bemusingly empty lane 1, wondering why the hell I can't get a step on.

Bad lane discipline on roundabout so when I'm going past they nearly stray into me, there's f*cking lines on the road stay in them you twat.

People who slow down before taking a turning and then slam the brakes to a near halt just as they're about to turn.

People in the outside lane of a slip road when they're not overtaking anyone because if I'm in that lane you need to be going for it to stay out my way

People who don't say thank you

People who don't indicate on roundabouts

People who indicate incorrectly on roundabouts

People who don't change their broken bulbs

People with fog lights on when they don't need to be

Don't flash at me because you think I'm going to fast when you're doing 45 in a 70 you grumpy old twat.

Basically i don't like other people.

the way people attemp to move sheep that are stood in the middle of the road by sitting 10-20 meters back pointlessly peeping their horns, the daft things never shift from that. Also the way people slow down to ridicolous speeds e.g 5mph to drive over cattle grids  :fighting:

Being a country boy you can always tell who's a local and who's not by them two points above.

Bad lane discipline is a given but my biggie at the moment are pople who cant use slip roads.....theyre for speeding up/ slowing down. You dont crawl up it at 40, merge badly causing HGVs to move into middle lane and then speed up and you certainly dont slow down to 40 whilst indicating to leave the motorway!!!

I really don't know where to start!

Let's just say almost all of the above? But...

.... I don't like cattle grids, nor does my Eddy (and I do live in the country)   :signLOL:

So let's add lazy feckin farmers who leave 2" of cow sh*te sprayed across an A road! How are they allowed to get away with it? Lethal!

I drove through the deepest, darkest hills of Wales last Autumn.

Navigated (or so I thought) a large deposit of horse/cow/monster sh*t on a B road by straddling it dead on. Not til I got to the Tesco garage at Cardigan did I realise I hadn't avoided a single bit of it. Huge lump of it, with straw sticking out of it and everything, bang in the middle of the splitter and engorged in the honeycomb. Nice.

+1
These selfish tw@ts are a very significant PITA if you're towing a trailer yourself, and so are prohibited from using outside lane on a motorway!

Drivers that flash other drivers waiting at T junctions to come out when if they look in the rearview mirror first they will notice I'm the only one behind them for miles therby no need to flash the waiting driver which is always the slowest tw4t on the road........ BREATHE!

Que jumpers that won't wait in a build up of traffic, drive up the inside and cut in front of those that are waiting, really makes my piss boil.

- People who don't indicate or indicate last second when you could have pulled out time before
- People who don't say thank you when letting them out or when people cross the road
- People who middle lane hog or don't get out the outside lane when you're behind them
- People who don't have a clue what correct lane to be in on a roundabout
- Old people. They're a genuine danger.
- People who brake excessively earlier coming to a junction or roundabout.
- Cyclists. Granted some stick to the side, but majority of them think the width of the road is all for them. F*ck off quick.
- People who drive with stupidly bright headlights so you can't see sh*t

I don't get it  I just fly over them nothing at all to worry about. Certainly wouldn't go to silly low speeds of 5-10mph  :rolleye:

Good point on the sprayed sh*t  been once or twice I'm been driving past fields and all of a sudden out of no where my car is covered in sh*t that's be thrown from the spreader over the hedge onto my car  :fighting: lucky haven't happened in my R....yet

  Love these crap road craft threads!

Pistonheads have their own "Crap driving caught on camera" and "One single thing that makes you think, knob" threads dedicated to this very subject

Driving must be up there in the top 5 most emotive topics in this country, for both enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike.   I've seen the most pleasant, kindest, placid people turn into absolute arseholes behind the wheel, like a light switch.  It's a very English thing to take very minor motoring infractions very seriously, myself included!

Anyway, where to start!  AJP's "People who don't look for a clear path onto roundabouts until they've come to stop first" is a great one, and it really does p1ss me off because it causes significant congestion where I live.

I think for me it's just people taking their schitty attitudes out on others that encompasses all of my pet peeves.  So you've had a crap day at work and you're sat in a traffic jam.  Deal with it, so have I, so have the rest of us.  Your journey is not more important than ours.....and yes, it's YOU people who just dive out of junctions into the queue of traffic uninvited I'm referring to.....with no acknowledgment to the person you just barged in front of.  Cluckin Runts.

I actually got out of my car and took someone to task for it after they barged in front of me......and guess what.  Doors were locked.  Windows wound up.  Wouldn't look at or acknowledge me.  Stared straight ahead.  Spineless cluckin runt, as well as an arrogant cluckin runt.  Would they do that in a Post office queue and risk a beating?  On reflection I shouldn't have done that, but it's just the bare faced arrogance of just pushing in with no "thanks" hand gesture, nothing.....grrrrrr.  Utter gusset stain.

I also hate the stupid elephant racing HGV drivers insist on doing.  Militant helmet-cam cyclists who are deliberately obstructive to annoy motorists, well, they deserve to knocked off and run over quite frankly.

There's just a lot of high and mightiness on the roads at the moment, and everyone else is in the wrong.  People forget that driving is a social event and we all share the roads.  Unfortunately it's a symptom of over crowding.  Watch what happens when you put 1000 rats in a cramped space.  Humans are no different.  We all want our space.

Had one like this two days ago. Here we were, a situation where the outside lane closes off - I'm on the  inside lane, queuing along with others, when this car comes alongside trying to jump the queue, and had the cheek to blast their horn when I wouldn't let them in. Blasted my horn back and looked in the mirror and surprised to see there's this stupid b1tch in the drivers seat, hand gestures and the like...... Her passenger / boyfriend/ partner/ whatever looking very sheepish though.  Such arrogance.

I used to think that women were much better drivers than men, but seems there's now a general 'attitude' generation coming on all about me; me; me....

I had one yesterday. It's ignorant / arrogant / unconsiderate / impatient drivers.

So, I was queuing in the RH lane to go right on a roundabout in town.  Indicator on, traffic was coming from the right which then filled and blocked my exit. Somehow, I must have missed a miniscule gap to force my way through the queuing traffic, to which the 'gentleman' in the VW UP behind took exception to. Cue some beeping and gesticulating from his side.
Utter prat. Where on earth do you expect me to go when cars are blocking me. And then, round the next corner, we arrive at another queue. Your beeping and gittishness wouldn't get you anywhere sooner. Maybe to your heart-attack...

Chill the f*** out. Make progress when you can, and be polite. Somewhere you'll get repaid with someone letting you out of a junction, etc.

Rant mode off...

You raise a good point there because I'm finding more and more it's the women who are the aggressors these days!!   Well, apart from the typical shaven headed, middle aged Essex builder type in a big black X5 who took exception to some assertive driving on my part the other day.  'Assertive' meaning I got into a gap before he did, and it made his penis shrivel up apparently.   He threatened to shoot me, and stab me (for good measure), in front of my girlfriend etc blah blah.....all the biggest threats in the world.....and then he drove off after having his near coronary explosion.......but anyway, yeah, women!!   Maybe they aren't getting any from their boyfs/husbands?

And yep, the people like her getting angry because their attempts at queue barging failed is on the rise.  Self important arrogant fckwits.   Who knows where all this hostile combat driving will end, but I predict road rage is only going to increase the more crowded the roads get.

I shouldn't laugh. Obviously having a bother-boy threaten you with death isn't a lighthearted matter, but the way you put it really made me chuckle.

Do you write, or have you even written professionally? Serious question. I get the impression you're not shy of that kind of thing.

Anyway, post of the day for me

Anyway, post of the day for me

  It was surreal really.....whilst he was yelling out of his window, all I could focus on was the copious amounts of spit flickering out of his mouth like a sparkler, huge pulsing veins in his neck, and his face turning into a football sized beetroot!  Threatened to be shot at and/or stabbed (which ever took his fancy from the weapons arsenal in his boot) was secondary on my mind

With men I find it's 95% intimidation, 5% intention to harm.   It's the women who are more likely to dish out a portion of b1tch slaps!

Classic case in point: I remember this chap in a Range Rover chasing me down for no apparent reason on a quiet 50mph limit DC.  Aggressive tailgating, hand gestures, all of it.  Eventually I was getting too close to home for comfort (I never let road rage stalkers know where I live - I drive them to the police station if it gets bad enough), so against my better judgment, I stopped the car, got out and stood calmly by the door.  He screeched to a halt in front and came sprinting over over to me (again, big ol Beetroot head + foaming rabid dog mouth) yelling something about me crossing a white line to over take the dawdler in front of, miles back.

I stood my ground, looked him in the eye and said "Are you serious mate?  You broke the speed limit, drove without due care and attention and incited road rage just to tell me about a very minor motoring infraction?".   And then all of a sudden, it was like a light switch was pressed and he was a completely different bloke.  Friendly, complimentary of what I was wearing and my car (I think he ended up fancying me) and we had a quick chat and went about our ways.
Weird surreal moments eh?  A lot of pent up anger out there these days and people just need to vent..... it doesn't always have to end with a stabbing, although that is a real danger and I need to stop getting out of my car!!

Funny you should say that, my Mum keeps mentioning creative writing courses to me, and nope, never done it as a profession.  Wouldn't know where to start or if it even interests me tbh.  I suppose it must if I spend most of my day on forums

I think most of us do

Funny thing is, every time we go out and I'm driving, my gf's eyes droop like a sad puppys, followed by "Please can you drive normally! No speeding, no road rage, no bullying, I just want a relaxed journey".  Oh the irony and double standards!!  When she drives, it's like Apocalypse now.  I need to buy her a Range Rover I think, and rearrange the letters to Road Rager or something.

People who think I'm in the wrong for using a bus lane outside of its operational hours.

My Mrs is terrible for road rage, but she'd never say anything to them although it builds up and then affects her driving for the rest of the journey, she can't let the little things go. I know I drive too fast at times, but in queuing and town environments I'm generally courteous and let people get away with small mistakes we all make them. Plus we forget about our local little quirks or weird road layouts as we are used to them, and a visiting driver may not realise.

I am one for shouting in the safety of my own car as I tend to avoid confrontation like the plague, but over the weekend I realised I was in the wrong lane so I indicated left and waited for a suitable gap then pulled out. The car that I pulled out of took exception to this (despite not needing to change his speed) and flashed at me. I would always leave this be but we both ended up parking in the same supermarket a few rows apart, as he passed my car he muttered something like 'ill get you next time' under his breath. Again I let it go.
then whilst i was fiddling for a trolley token he muttered 'knob' under his breath at which point I turned to him calling him out, calmly stated the facts about the situation and that if he wanted to 'get me next time' he was more than welcome to try. I walked off and he stood there embarrassed in front of a handful of other shoppers.

Fully expected a keyed car on my return but it seems he thought better of it.

The point is, like P3T3R pointed out above, there are certain weird layouts and sudden lane changes that catch even locals (me) out but people love to get aggressive towards people who make those mistakes!

Cyclists going through red lights when the rest of us wait til green, And why do councils waste a lot of good money on cycle lanes when 9/10 adult cyclists ride on all footpaths anyway ?

1. People that hog the fast lane then speed up when you go to undertake, so not to let you in.
2. People that don't let ambulances or other services out.
3. People smoking in their cars (to me just as bad as on the phone)
4. People that look at you like you just punched their child for honking at them when they've sat at a green light until it goes red.

1. People that treat the lanes on the motorway as 60-70-80
2. People who can't maintain a consistent speed so you end up overtaking them over and over again as the speed up past you, drop in then slow down
3. Que jumpers
4. People who approach a flowing motorway form a clear slip road at 30mph
5. Wrong indication on roundabouts
6. Old people
7. How women on the motorway NEVER give you a gap to get out, i.e off a slip road into traffic.
8. Other drivers
9. People who don't replace bulbs
10. People who insist on flooring it at red lights to slam on

I smoked for years. I have used my car whilst driving years ago. It's nowhere near as distracting, for one you can put both hands on the wheel whilst smoking. Secondly, a lot of phone users try to text with a touch screen. That's just dangerous. You can spot someone on the phone from miles off, they're generally swerving all over the middle lane whilst getting under and overtaken. Smokers are harder to spot until the burning embers flying towards your bonnet

Ahhh, they're not your generic smoker. They're rookies with poor fagmin. A pro knows where there lighter is at all times

2. People who can't maintain a consistent speed so you end up overtaking them over and over again as the speed up past you, drop in then slow down
Oh yes - this is one of mine too. WTF! Saw so much of this at the weekend on a rare trip up to Lincolnshire. I thought driving on the M4 was bad, and then I've seen how people are on a less crowded motorway like the A1M. Honestly.., just pick your speed and keep to it! Don't tailgate me to get me out of the way and then slow down once you're past... I'd rather you keep going so you're in front & I can anticipate some moronic move you'll pull...!

Merge lanes.
Angry women drivers.

I just dread it when I come across lanes that merge two into one.
One day an old woman was so close that her mirror was overlapping my mirror, she was going mental.
Same junction months later, woman trying to push in, not merging just bloody mindedly forcing her way in. She leant on the horn for a good ten seconds (offence) then for some random reason got her huge phone out (offence) and took a photo of our car stopped at a roundabout further along.

Yeah lane merging usually always gets heated these days, and ties in nicely with......

......people who think indicating = right of way.

You know the sorts.  Throbbers in vans (usually) who pull alongside you in the left lane, then indicate and steer at the same time to force a gap that didn't exist.   Arrogant bank stains.  I pinch them off now. Not standing for that rubbish anymore.  Join the queue like everyone else.

I've got no problem with people merging in turn when they are already in front of me on the road. These days I even give way to someone alongside me who politely indicates without forcing their way in.....

It's the ones that try to race forward/to make up as much ground as possible, or those that think an indicator means right of way that I end up being stubborn with, even if it means bumper to bumper with the car in front to stop them taking the piss

I am a lot more sedate these days than I once was, mainly as I often have my two young children in the car

Ha, the worst are the ones who force their way in with no indication or acknowledgment!

Similarly, being let out of a side road seems to have become a god given right to some people as well.   The people who just drive out into the road and EXPECT someone to yield I always block off regardless, but what is becoming increasingly more common is zero gratitude from those you do flash out of a side road.   It happens to me so often now, I've just stopped letting anyone out full stop.

1. People that treat the lanes on the motorway as 60-70-80
2. People who can't maintain a consistent speed so you end up overtaking them over and over again as the speed up past you, drop in then slow down

Point 2 is especially annoying when you are on cruise control and don't want to speed up to pass them..

Point 1 - isnt it more like 56-58-100?

Where a slip road joins the main carriageway there are dotted lines telling you it is a give way. I hate it when people just push their way on expecting you to brake or move over even if there is other traffic.

1. Those who hog motorway middle lanes
2. Anyone who doesn't have the ability to understand roundabouts & what lane they should be in for their exit
3. Failing to acknowledge when you have given way to someone or let them out.

Roundabout Retards I call them.  They crawl up to it, slam the brakes on and THEN look for a gap.  And naturally, 5 opportunities a bus could have pulled into pass by before said retards muster up any gumption to press the accelerator.

It's like the Walking Dead disease has infected British motorists.  Absolutely no sense of urgency or consideration for anyone else.  Yeah I'll sit here at 60 in the outside lane forever, just because - my road, my speed, f'ck everyone else.

:signLOL: this thred has made my day :jumpmove: :jumpmove: :jumpmove: :jumpmove:

I have driven trucks all over europe for years now and also i have worked for the highways agency for 7 years working all over the UK. I drive a car and also ride motorbikes and cycles.

From what i have seen over this time is that its not down to the mode of transport these people are useing but down to the people themselves causing the problems. A f**kwit in a car is still a f**kwit on a bike. MOSTLY...

The one true thing i have noticed is anyone in a BMW/MERC that didnt get the upgraded lights that have indicators. Like WTF you spend 50k+ on a brand new car get all your added extras but dont have the money for the indicators thats my main pet peeve.

People who speed up toward you on a roundabout, as if they are pretending they are going to crash into you. Even when you went in a gap, but they get annoyed because they sped onto the roundabout.

People at junctions who hesitate, hesitate, hesitate, and then pull out in front of you.

People who tailgate. Seriously, that’s dangerous mainly for you, moron.

People who speed up behind me during a merge in turn, and then don’t let me in. There was a gap. I was ahead of you. Just let me in FFS. Also happens when I’m in the inside lane and rather than taking the obvious gap, they try and get round one or two last cars, overtaking again to force their way in.

You say that, but I've noticed VAG drivers with the new strobing/sweeping/KnightRider indicators use them all the time to show them off!   Go VW.  If that's what it takes to make dumb arses use indicators....

And what is it with people joining motorways at 40mph these days?  f*cking retards.  Everyone has to slam their brakes on because Mr 40mph comes up against a HGV in the inside lane (they never move over) so rather than accelerate, he brakes........  :fighting:

When I think of this I always remember this:

Also, people who try to accelerate when you overtake them - then proceed to flash you like a nutcase, including hitting the indicators - they are soo angry you had the audacity to over THEM!

Wow, that's quite special. What a caravanning moron. I see this a lot around my way on the M4 - indicating at a junction means I'm cutting you up to make my exit. Also, there is the increasing lack of indicating when changing lanes - juuuust drifting across.... they're obviously more important people who don't need to indicate, and I'm a mind reader!

Mid lane hoggers need to be the worst. Approaching motorway at 40-50mph (should be going faster) and boom straight into the middle lane. left hand lane didn’t even get a chance. Then they proceed to sit there for the next 5 miles. Causing all the other traffic to move to the right hand lane to get around them because they are still at 50 which then becomes congested and this whole time the left hand lane is completely empty for 6-700 yards. Which with my frustration I simply driver straight up it and under take about a million cars. I need to stop doing that someone one of these days is gonna pull into the left lane and I’m gonna get caught out

Yep, the shoving their foot down sorts are just as simple.

How the system will prosecute you for driving 3-4mph over the speed limit on an A/B road, however it’s perfectly acceptable to drive 20mph UNDER the speed limit.

It isn't acceptable, but old duffers seem to view it as 'safe'.  They should be nabbed for it under the 'Driving without due care.....' penalty.  HGVs swerving to avoid knobbers casually drifting onto DCs at 40mph is bloody dangerous.

Folk taking liberties really gets my goat up. Golden rule of motoring, if theres a car parked or an obstruction on your side of the lane then you have to stop to let the clear lane through! Simple.
So many times folk just seem to think that they have the right of way then either totally ignore you or give you the smile and thankyou wave  :innocent:

Nooo, that's not how it works....If my side of the road is blocked by a parked car, I can just drive onto your side, so that you have to wait for me! Why should I have to wait? I'm more important than you......... Me; Me; Me............

Where my lad lives it's like that, with cars parked up - one old fart d1ck touched my mirror trying to squeze by on my side, and when I opened the window to bollo*k him, he just said what else could he do??? WTF - try waiting until it's clear, you Muppet! Unbelievable it is - I want an old landrover, with those stickie out side steps, just to gouge down the side of their cars for times like that, Grrrrr........ :slap:

I wonder if it's because of no discipline being dished out in the way they were brought up - 'mummy's little precious angel  wouldn't be naughty', so the result is they can never be wrong - and don't understand the basics of  right and wrong.

Another possibility is that they were brought up by 'couldn't give a sh1t' , knuckle dragging parents - producing young morons who throw bricks and stuff at fire fighters and ambulance crews. Either way, it's a very sad reflection on today's society. So much for progress.....

Gawd knows mate.  I think it's just society in general becoming more selfish and self centered.  I had 3 people do the same thing to me and my mate when we were on our push bikes today.  Just blatantly pulled out of junctions in front of us.  I am by no means a militant lycra warrior.  Being both a car and mountain bike enthusiast, I respect both groups of road user, but the standards of driving and respect for other people is massively on the decline.

I blame it on police presence being practically zero these days, especially in my area.  Having been on holiday to a few places recently where armed police patrol the streets, and I mean proper combat gear and MP5s dangling from their shoulders......I think that's what the UK needs.  Something for the throbbers of society to be afraid of.

Just slow right down for a bit then boot it, slow down again and do the same if they run up to you again. Most times the tailgater gets the message after that.

I have millions, I must be the grumpiest driver ever but my biggest ones are people who have no idea what size their car is and therefore have to drive in the middle of a narrow lane or have to constantly brake as they are worried their car might not get passed the car coming in the opposite direction.  Also, people who purchase large 4x4 vehicles and never use them for the purpose in with which they are intended and when you meet them down a narrow lane with pull ins they refuse to move over as they don't want to get their large 4x4 dirty or put it in the rough stuff!  :fighting:

Not a driving peeve, but just an observation. I'm from the Midlands, and I reckon we're a friendly and considerate lot, in general, but we  moved to the South Coast a few years back , and people just seem to be so inconsiderate down here...Two examples.... Walking along the pavement into to town, and there is on-street parking, as many towns have, but the self centred morons who have just parked up, then just throw their doors open, without even looking or giving a second thought that some poor pedestrian might be walking along the pavement.....I sometimes stop and ask if they would like me to wait while they get out......I was carrying shopping bags one day and they caught on the car door that this woman passenger had flung open,  as I was alongside it (accidentally - of course), and the woman said loudly to her husband, "his bags have just banged on our car door .... WTF do you expect if you open it without looking, derrrrr!  The husband didn't say a word!  Next one, in a similar fashion, around here people  just barge straight out from  shop doors, without looking, or pausing, to see if anyone might be walking in front of the shops along the street. It's just Me; Me; Me....People are so rude and inconsiderate to other people.  Thoughts??
