These are the mods:

The first one was the S3 intercooler, full aluminium, larger then the stock (gti) one:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2Fpost-2-1246880726_zpsywgaa9ym.jpg&hash=6f0eef0e7d1e28e5f3fa22e292c0c8d4b2eb5a4e)

Then came the cold air intake, I choose EVO-MS for the WRC like sound and the good reviews at the time:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2F25032010308_zpswz0mcql0.jpg&hash=0b52a6c8aa0b94e4386320ab24f86c17abf61050)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2F25032010322_zpsrrq6vuq6.jpg&hash=7a6f90651514f3df7c09c6fe35dfa64e59fb1c54)

Got the Blueflame exhaust, 3", 100 cel catalyst (later de-cat):

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FHPIM3431_zpsudfl4xn5.jpg&hash=0927a52b4f89f0f5dc1800c5f94aa53da0ecb176)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FHPIM3428_zpsu4ldylce.jpg&hash=fff4545566a76873d44d4bee5df02e5abde271bd)

The car made a lot of power, but it had some hard time staying on the road. It was time for coilovers, Bilstein PSS10:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0497_zps8pmyvjdc.jpg&hash=3d533cddba8fc2e9b1db86884e8602ecf8067178)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0504_zps4kdfu0ml.jpg&hash=dd0fbe121e86214268f3f691819e28aae28f23cc)

...and for anti roll bars - H&R 26mm front, 24mm rear:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0486_zpsppoyazlc.jpg&hash=9e278b359fcffd00947b7b37dd31f5c4d9856464)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0480_zps4cfhjawe.jpg&hash=ba8c6b7dda8d7b14d19d9a7221c33545a003e566)

...i decided i needed more power  :signLOL: - APR high pressure fuel pump:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0518_zps9a82rk7l.jpg&hash=e048eda2160177ff317ffd309089e41cf7ff6f61)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0597_zpsqmntzvvy.jpg&hash=ec2adda659b58745aab385594768ebabe20eff50)

...and the clutch couldn't take it...so I have bought Southbend Stage 3 Endurance + SMF:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0522_zps3ysugofc.jpg&hash=0d7e6a25a38f14a7724c69435515c7af350dbc04)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0525_zpsgsn6e9rr.jpg&hash=c48c28911f204963d77c0dcbb08759595143d844)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0565_zpsjx3op08q.jpg&hash=00aa14f2f0bcfce4c58eab023d4266f940abe4bf)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0590_zpsguksks1n.jpg&hash=7a3b31805f429757a8f2b73220fa4b672fa5c2ae)

Then I had upgraded the dogbone + mount insert with the ones from BSH:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0506_zpsyomkv4tl.jpg&hash=b36253004c971e4304474dc105d2519bea6b501a)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0615_zpswlofd4ov.jpg&hash=c05c0f4364db6d3ef38dae0914ff7e3a15bc5e87)

I've found some cheap used TT lower arms (it proved to be one of the best upgrades that I've ever made). Because of the negative camber everything changed, superb steering feel, greatly reduced understeer:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0289_zps8ka4zkwn.jpg&hash=a29bceae36bc64185035de0bdee5af258d164b8a)

Then I got my Wavetrack LSD:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0530_zpsyoj6qgva.jpg&hash=66fee233ea4a36fc556da0f86fb148a9d7bf359a)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0532_zpsxugnenbl.jpg&hash=174c8a6b56149dfe2bf7cab52a787cfa01699793)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0568_zpsukyml14r.jpg&hash=d8ccdcc8d2f16c0ba5fc35ab2a888589f081f822)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0576_zpsipnqpt61.jpg&hash=9df98cb4f556c426312f680f3ba6872654676dbe)

Installed new coils and plugs (NGK Iridium BKR8EIX):

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2F260920111039_zpsdqlhb5bv.jpg&hash=708ab3012f5e6c20834e092763eb0edeb6e7c70d)

... and the RS4 fuel pressure regulator:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2F2011-11-08095415_zps423i24x6.jpg&hash=b35173a2feca596d5f22d916abb51911ba7b6fa4)

Then I had to change the lower mount to Vibratechnics and motor + gearbox to 034 density line - (no real picture) to eliminate the wheel hop:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0276_zpsno0k2tr0.jpg&hash=e612eaf83f57b0ec18477799adf6243b9fb66459)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0274_zpswkilnxzj.jpg&hash=3ef43b7767f4767e5add3b1d1bdd3d42ad0a4a6b)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FMk5_Mount_Pair_zpszjqv5jly.jpg&hash=740bad9cf0aa0bef4c04ce32987bd0ab7832ee4f)

Then the endless problem with braking overheating begun - at first I have upgraded the front with Tarox F2000 discs and Carbotech RP2 and rear with DS2500 brake pads:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0285_zpstjrhvgop.jpg&hash=4ab0245fe2e704287c97110e9ad4192c5202a32a)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0077_zpspqvopxe1.jpg&hash=00e97a7605c4358109d65c060da2105040a38da1)

...then the trackday wheels OEM Seat Leon FR 7J + Federal FZ 201 semislicks (which were too close to the brakes):

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0310_zpsss6m4riq.jpg&hash=dc0beb3de52ccd9e882c34b68e1066d7b5a640d9)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_0314_zpszinc8jnk.jpg&hash=53697b5541e9142b920cfe6d2ed5106a40e46d46)

Because they were 7J (no brake clearance - or so I thought at the time) I boiled the brake fluid at my first trackday after upgrading and cracked one disc...so I've decided to change them with these (BBS VZ 032 8J):

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_1142_zpsoo4ndzyp.jpg&hash=2f52f641d7c3039a578b713b1d2a6df47c9f9cf5)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_1121_zpscq6ddbdi.jpg&hash=690b708d85e5e2d79b92bbdcecf58ecc60996bdf)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FCupra%2FCupra_mpr_zps5qxrd34q.jpg&hash=c31d05f43aeddd0576a142ca66d3e17f30902e0b)

Same thing happened, everything cooked again, calipers, pads, fluid:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FParts%2Fcoocked_brakes%2FIMG_4688_zpsnut0jao3.jpg&hash=1a8ded7e2bd1b8a5f36be13d89579bfca0b24c24)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FParts%2Fcoocked_brakes%2FIMG_4866_zpsatzk2iyv.jpg&hash=d3da9c7844de770f3bc47a22fd0b1cb53c4ddca7)

I've received the rear brakes to S3/R32 310mm and I've sent them for a paint job so they will match with the AP Racing BBK that I've ordered:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_4907_zps1lahj7o5.jpg&hash=f547a3af3bab714e43448b8455ff55ac43e2268e)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_4905_zpskwxt6iq2.jpg&hash=043f5fce61715e8572d0618315a514c79ed0e958)

I really hope the new ventilated rear rotors will help with the heat dissipation, otherwise it is just added weight, front's do all the braking.

Because I've ordered AP Racing's Formula BBK CP5575M1011R2.CG12, I had to also order a new set of 8x18 Team Dynamics wheels and new 18" tyres, these will not fit under 17" wheels.
The tyres are here:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_4759_zps6ukezon7.jpg&hash=128d9b7c283ff24e9a1f6ec786e897a1e0df0e70)

They are DMAK Trackday tyres, never used them before, I will see what they can do. They have kevlar sidewall, I've never seen anything harder
Now I still have to wait 2 weeks for the wheels and 7 for the BBK.

If the overheating problem continues I will have to build brake ducts.

By the way the car was remaped by Revo (Stage 2+).

Yesterday I got the rear calipers powder-coated:

If they don't help with the cooling, it is just added weight:

Caliper:                1,8 Kg
Caliper Carrier:      1,3 Kg
Rotor:                  6,8 Kg

I still have to find out how much the GTI rear brakes weigh.

Awesome Teo, I'll check the track vids out in a bit  :happy2:

Some great spec going in here.
I like the BBS, a rarer set in the UK.

I've sorted a used S3 intercooler out now, too

Going well so far there. Add some Ground control adjustable camber mounts.

Also you could opt for the Superpro front control arm kit.

Thanks Pete! The BBS are gone now, they were 17" and the new BBK needs minimum 18" wheel.
I made somebody very happy, I used them once.
I've ordered TD Pro Race 1.2 8x18. (eta 2 weeks)

Great news with the IC, it will be more than enough for your setup!  :happy2:

Thanks for your suggestions!
I was thinking about camber plates, but I still have to find some for Cupra/B16.
I will read more about the Superpro front control arm kit.

Cheers!  :drinking:

Update:

I had to repaint the passenger sill and the tailgate, there were  some old "injuries". I have some before and after pictures.

Before:

And the new wheels arrived so i put the DMACK's on them. Because of the kevlar sidewall it was a real battle getting then on the rim. After inflating to 9.5 bar, they've given up.
Still 3 weeks until the final piece, AP Racing's BBk. And then....race mode - on.  :driver:

New wheels again. Gues I'm a wheel whore!

This time for look and everyday use.  :jumping:
I decided I don't want to use spacers with the OEM wheel after BBK.

So here they are, OZ Ultraleggera 8x18 ET45:

I drive more carefully with the OZ. :|

Unfortunately I'm still looking for wheels, those Ultraleggera were ET35, the guy advertising them thought they were ET45. They didn't fit.
But I'm happy, finally my AP Racing BBK is ready.

My car is waiting for the front brakes at my mechanic's for 3 months now. Don't know how AP Racing work but I'm sure that 10000 Fiesta's were borned from March.
Today I couldn't help taking it for a spin even with almost no front pads, I've ignored al the warning noises:  :jumping:
I think it looks good with the trackday wheels also:

I'm happy that I had no rubbing with my Team Dynamics 8J ET45 wheels and TT lower arms with -2.3 camber, but I was driving at normal town speed. I'm still to find out on 27th how this setup will work on track, there is a bolt on the inner side of the wheel arch that is worryingly close. It was also the first spin for the DMACK tyres. They felt pretty grippy but their test will be on the trackday.

I've ordered o new set of Ultraleggeras, this time Matt Graphite Silver 8x18 ET45. Maybe I should have ordered ET48, but I didn't want to risk not clearing the new calipers.

I think I will also keep the OEM Orion wheels for the winter, so I will have 3 sets for different use. I wanted to get rid of them because they will not fit over the AP Racing calipers. But I thing they might.
AP Racing say that this kit will fit under the OEM 2008 Audi S3 wheel + 3mm spacer. That wheel is 7.5J ET54. Orion wheels are 7.5J ET 51 so .... :jumping:
Help me decide which color should I refurbish them, I'm thinking anthracite or matt gunmetal.

Can't wait for the next 2 weeks for the brakes and Ultraleggeras!  :jumping:

That's the Palace of Parliament, largest civilian building and the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon with a floor area of 360,000 square meters. It is a symbol of Ceausecu's madness from the communist era.  :stupid:

I lean towards gunmetal myself.

Looking good.  Semi slicks are normally as touch wider than the road equivelant of the size due to a more square profile. If you don't get any catchin glike that you should be fine.

The little plastic knob and screw under the arch, most people remove :)

Did manage to loose some weight, but I've added some on the back:

Front brakes:

       AP Racing
       -calipers ~2,85 Kg
       -carriers ~0,88 Kg
       -discs ~8,5 Kg

       Cupra/S3/R32
       -calipers+carriers ~9 Kg
       -discs ~12 Kg

Rear brakes:

        Cupra/S3/R32
        -calipers ~1,8 Kg
        -carriers ~1,3 Kg
        -discs (Zimmerman) ~6,8 Kg

         Cupra/GTI
         -calipers+carriers+disc ~7.7Kg

So the weight saving in front ~8,77 x2 Kg minus the added weight at the back ~2.2 x2 Kg gives a total of ~13,14 Kg.
Happy with this result given that this is upsprung/rotational weight.

Some updates:

It was a lot of work trying to get to the track on Saturday, but I've managed to install everything, but there are some faults that should be corrected.
First we have installed the front brakes and a rudimentary cooling duct:

Because I couldn't be there i asked the mechanic to try to connect the duct in the center of the disc where the vanes take air, but he connected them to the side of the disc.
He also told me that the calipers were perfect centered and he didn't even have to use the spacers from AP Racing. I found out later that it wasn't so.  :scared:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_6010_zpsrwtksrak.jpg&hash=f64bc64e1f347b47d460bf112790afa179ed29c9) (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_6009_zpstf3efaxc.jpg&hash=d410ef8ff5c10aee6ca9372c13c762e9eb81952d)

Then we have installed the S3 rear brakes:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_6031_zpspuxezsh3.jpg&hash=0a2fc14b10e94f2b066154d45a42072df17fa44e) (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_6032_zpsucibnmkw.jpg&hash=1c9ade3b851ea80b5b492c15b197ef88473880c4)

This was the final result:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_6039_zpsyjbk248y.jpg&hash=c8c51032591c133e946620c7be085e39536d2e6c) (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_6037_zps0yhdgcph.jpg&hash=36db619561700aa0ac2bb1efd49cdc0c3be83f53)

After this we've tried to do a quick geometry because it was 11 at night and I had to be ready for the track the next day.
After only 30 laps of a 3,3 km circuit the front right tyre, a new DMACK Trackday medium tyre looked like this:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_6088_zps47spnoj4.jpg&hash=c60031821ea16f12ffbfaa85b535daa801cecd87)

Unfortunately, the ducts were pulled off from the brake shields and the cooling didn't work, the heat shields stopped the vanes to take colder air.   Also the pads were new, and the calipers were not correctly centered so the exterior pads were always in contact with the discs. This has caused a lot of heat, I boiled the new Castrol RBF brake fluid and my top speed was about ~10Km/h less than the last time. I was also slower then the last time by 1.5-2 seconds per lap.  :sad1:

This is how the front calipers look now, on the exterior they are purple:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_6147_zpskxwx8p5o.jpg&hash=822347733a0dce293d24168d181c82448769d9c4) (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FParts%2FIMG_6146_zpswvshmblq.jpg&hash=258deca5f202c9f82d21435ad4aae3d2f14eb5e0)

The slower speeds can have 2 causes: it was hotter by 10 degrees C and my timing was higher than usual (revo settings 6) or the brake pads were always in contact with the discs and this was slowing me down.

Sorry to know you had issues running the new brakes on track. I hope you get them sorted soon.

Thanks man!  :happy2:

Next week I'll go to a new mechanic, he's very skilled. He's the guy in charge of building the cars for my friends fuscobal, bogdanbd and drsilviuro.
He has already taken a look at the car and told me everything wrong with it. We will redo the brake ducts, center the calipers, change the fuel filter and check the gearbox which has some nasty oil on it, could be a real problem or it could be the boiled brake fluid that has overflown.

After that I'll do some logs and send them to Revo for analysis and find out the best setting for me.

Shame to hear about your issues mate. So much potential but you can't make the best of it because of silly problems (as usual). Should be an awesome car when its all working properly  :happy2:

You're right, problems as usual.  But you don't drown by falling in the water, you drown by not swimming up.
I will solve them eventually.  :happy2:

I didn't understand anything from the last trackday, my water temperature went at 120C, no power, overheated brakes. So i asked a hillclimb pilot that was there to try the car, thinking that the biggest problem was me. Turns out that my time was 1 second faster. I know my car.  :driver:

Today was a good day, we,ve finished installing the brake ducts version 2, they are discrete, barely noticeable behind the fog grills, unfortunately they produce a lot of new noises.

Next is a cap for street use especially winter street use. So "brake ducts" are out of the wish list. This is how they look:

I'm not sure yet, maybe on 1st August. There is a trackday, but I didn't decide yet.
If there are over 30 degrees C, I'm not sure I want to stress the engine. An accurate weather report will be within 3-4 days ahead.

Yesterday despite it was Sunday I've taken the car back to the mechanic, (who opened the shop at about 22 to take a look at my car, great guy... :congrats:) because of a terrible noise coming from the front side. The whole car vibrates. Until now, I've ignored this thinking it's the brake ducts rubbing on the drive shaft, but it was so annoying that I decided to check it out.
It seems that the ducts are fine, no rubbing tracks on them. So with the car on the elevator he told me to turn the ESP off and do a hard launch on fifth, put it on neutral, and kill the engine.
The conclusion is that the front left wheel barring has died.
So i left the car at the shop, until the wheel barring arrives it will be lowered by 1 cm because I finally decided to participate to this time attack event on 8-9 August:

http://rotac.ro/

I've reserved number 26:

Until then some new pictures:

Hi,

This is the result of my time attack effort:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fteo_parvu%2FRaces%2Fpodium_ss_class_zpsuvdfqsuw.jpg&hash=663c538226088fd7f59437dfeeecbd74ab2849c3)

Third place unfortunately, but I'll get them next time.  :driver:
One of the M4s, the one who took first place, should have been in a different class, it had a weight/power ratio of 3,77 (1628kg/431hp). The class limit was 3,8, and the organizers said it was a mistake after the race. Also I've heard that they were both remapped by AcSchnitzer. Only the weight was checked, the power has been declared by each one of us, gentlemen agreement.
Overall I'm happy with this result, because there were 34 degrees C in the shadow and 49 degrees C at the asphalt level, so I had massive heat soak with the S3 intercooler. On the main straight I had 10 km/h less than usual and I've struggled to keep the engine safe. After just one fast lap the water temperature was over 110 degrees C.

Congrats on the great result! The competition was high!  :congrats:

If they were tuned it'd be very hard for you to compete with them. I don't see how a tuned M4 would have that power output. They'd have to be stock.

It was hot this weekend (even hotter here) so not the best for what you needed. When you upgrade your IC you'll be able to enjoy longer your mean machine.
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra
Post by: teo_parvu on August 11, 2015, 01:06:41 pm
Unfortunately for me, they were not stock, the only way to prove that would've been to challenge the result. In that case the organizers whould've tested them with an accelerometer, but I'll get them next time.
I need to shave 2 seconds,  with a good intercooler that is within reach.
The budget is low now but i found a cheap one from ebay that has the same spesc as Wagner:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEU-Golf-V-2-0TFSI-Tuning-Ladeluftkuhler-Intercooler-von-KWE-/161567442694

I'm gathering more information about it.

Yeah, that IC is bigger than what you have at the moment. Just the quality of the aluminium might differ from a Peron/Wagner. I got the Darkside Developments S3 IC but maybe I was better off with that, if the aluminium is the same quality as the DD. The prices are similar. The DD silicone hoses use jubilee clips instead.

I will not gamble with the intercooler, I must beat those M4's.
But now I cannot decide between Peron and Wagner, good thing I've got a lot of time.

Help! Anyone?

I don't know of any direct comparison. They both have great feedback.

You can search for the more extreme projects and see what IC are they using. I think you'll be happy with either one.

I've got plenty of time to decide, most probably it will be Wagner, I want something good and bolt on. It has some nice reviews:

http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=180325

This week I realized that I've never changed my timing belt, forgot about this completely. The car has only 74000km but it's 7 years old so I'm pretty lucky I still have my engine.  :signLOL:
So I've ordered:

- HEPU water pump
- INA Timing belt complete kit
- Cam Follower (06D 109 309 C)
- Millers Oils CFS 10W-60NT

I've decided to change from Motul 300V 5W40 to Millers 10W-60 because I mostly race this car. This oil will be more resistant to abuse, I really felt Motul was to thin for the temperatures that my engine generates.
i hope it's the right choice.

And a short clip from the last race is ready, it looks really good:

Yesterday we've serviced the car, the timing belt looked as if it could take another 7 years of abuse:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FParts%2FService%2Ftimming_belt_zpsa7nsilky.jpg&hash=617bb0feb21649b71a18fcb5552c11a7cd842298)

...but the camfollower was near the end of it's life:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FParts%2FService%2FIMG_6909_zpser3cu5hu.jpg&hash=6d2be6e86aa514b1850698db60324cf966f05b83)

Unfortunately not everything was smooth. The thread where the motor mount sits was really damaged, don't know what happened there:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FParts%2FService%2Fmotor_mount_screw_zpsxtswyc1b.jpg&hash=595cd0c3f2e78ef0021c6d71787f292cd9dbf145)

My mechanic managed to repair it somehow and put a longer screw there, I hope it will be ok.
I decided not to use 10W60 oil, instead I've gone for Millers Nanodrive 10W50 which should be better when starting cold in the morning and sustain higher temperature than my old Motul 300V 5W40.
I've also find out why my washing fluid was gone in 3 days, I've had a damaged o-ring.

Unfortunately I've touched the front bumper on a pole leaving the shop, trying to use every space available between one S3 and one GTR, and now I have a 1 cm scratch on the front lip.  :sad1:

I too know how it's like to damage the lip leaving a shop.

The mechanic has solved this, repaired the thread, but we will check it in 3 months and replace the mount if it fails again. I already have a spare one, but not not from 034 motorsport. It's custom made, a strengthened OEM one.

The new season of time attack starts so I'll revive this dusty topic.
I've got a much bigger intercooler than the S3 one (Wagner Tuning). :D Also i removed the cat converter.
I bought new 235/40/18 Federal FZ-201 tyres...so now i need new wider fenders. I tried to modify the OEM ones...worst idea ever.

I'm finally happy!
I've started the first 2016 time attack race on the "Romanian time attack challenge", winning my class, Supersport with the best overall time. A good friend had a better time in practice on "Unlimited" class with his modded 911 Turbo, but unfortunately he had some problems and couldn't compete after practice. My biggest competitor was a really beautiful Lotus on Hoosier slicks with a lot of aero mods.

Here's some pictures from the event:

Thank you guys!  :notworthy:

I hope i can keep up with the pack during the rest of the season now, i had the element of surprise.  :rolleye:
I live about 1 km from thee Palace of Parliament where that episode of Top Gear was created. It is a massive reminiscence of the communist era, the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon but the maintenance costs are ....pfff. Stupid thing!

I have decided to install an additional water cooler, OEM from the Golf R (Gti cup has 2 of them). Anyone knows the list of parts needed?

This is what i have so far, but I'm not sure that all of them are needed:

1K0 121 212 C     SECOND RADIATOR
1K0 122 051 BC   WATER HOSE HOT CLIMATE
1K0 121 064 A     WATER PIPE
1K0 121 101 CB   WATER PIPE
1K0 121 087 J      ADAPTER
1K0 121 156 BA   WATER HOSE
1K0 121 333 A     AIR DUCT
1K0 122 291 M     QUICK COUPLING PIECE
1K0 121 156 BC   WATER HOSE WITH QUICK COUPLING PIECE

Yes I have, but thanks!  :happy2:

The only think that for sure will be different for me will be the air guide: 1K0 121 333 A, the rest of the parts will for sure work. I have to check if a version for Leon is there or i'll have to build one.
The biggest problem is that the brake duct is exactly where this should be installed.

If you check ETKA the Leon also has this kit available for warm weather countries and DSG (BWA and BWJ).

You're right, the only thing that remains is the brake duct relocation. That should take some work, it was very hard installing them because u need space to turn the wheels.

LE: I've checked ETKA online and it seems that there is no code for the air duct (41), exacly what should be different.

AFAIK your Leon doesn't use that part, so it might not be needed/compatible. I've checked other years and none has that part.

Yeah, I will talk to my mechanic to see if we can fit the extra radiator without affecting the brake ducts. If I'd have to choose between brake and engine cooling, it'll be brake cooling.

Congratulations on the win mate, so close between 1st and 2nd.

Thanks mate! Yeah it was really close indeed, there were 3 practice sessions of 15 min and 3 race sessions. I missed one practice session because I wasn't paying attention when my group was called.  :signLOL:
And I had only one change for a good laptime because of the traffic in the first race session. After that, my brakes have overheated and I tried one more fast lap. At over 180km/h I tried to brake for the only hairpin of the track, i felt i had no brakes and I decided to keep the wheels straight and use the field to stop. Got out of there and went straight to the box. I've seen that my brake fluid has spilled out of the recipient. Scary moment!
I decided to not take part in the second and third race session, because I've seen my laptime and at that point I was 1 seconds faster then the fastest guy at "Race" class and 2 sec faster then the Lotus which was in my class, "Supersport". I could only hope.
Then I've seen their laptimes drop, but I've got lucky.  :jumping:
I have to be better prepared because the weather is getting warmer as the summer is approaching.

Wow I bet that was seriously intense watching his lap times.

Yeah fading brakes is scary so I can imagine no brakes is  :scared:, good that there was plenty of run off and all was OK in the end

Yeah doing time attacks is hard work as it is so doing it in that heat is a real challenge. Winning whilst only taking part in half of the sessions is very impressive though  :congrats:

Upgrade the oil cooler before doing the extra water radiator.
Good progress so far bud and great racing.

Unfortunately, oil cooler requires a lot more mods and it is more expensive, INA is not bolt on as they claim, and other products require manufacturing of brackets etc...
I've talked to fuscobal who has done this mod. Before doing it he was always complaining about overheating, now he has no more problems.

Thanks Jay!

LE: I believe this is for DSG, I'm wondering how can this be connected to the oil filter and if it is not dangerous running an oil cooler in the winter.
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra

No, it's for manuals or DSG.

You can use it as an oil cooler or a DSG oil cooler.
You just plumb it up differently.

After a while I'll revive this old topic...little time for forum these days.  :ashamed:

Unfortunately on the rest of the season I still couldn’t beat the Lotus (on Hoosier A7) but the difference was minimal so I finished second on SuperSport class this year but with a new record for me. Here’s some pictures from the last race:

I have a really annoying high RPM shifting problem for years that nobody can solve. I’ve talked with fuscobal who told me that a WOT box might be the only solution for that. (I’m still reading to learn how that thing is used)
Still have to find out what happened with the rear wheel alignment because it can be seen with the naked eye that I have about -1 camber on the right wheel and -2 on the left (I did a short visit of the track with the right side)
New parts ordered, the new goal now is weight saving and more grip:

-   TT aluminum rear hubs (I'd really appreciate if someone could tell the weight of them vs oem)
-   Sparco PRO 2000 II LF racing seat (I will take out my OEM Cupra sets)
-   1.9 Kgs HOCO Battery and charger
-   OMP Corsica Steering Wheel, Suede Leather, Black Anodized
-   New custom forged Vennom wheels, 9x18 front 8x18 rear
-   Used 250/660/18 Yokohama front slicks and 235/40/18 Pirreli rears

Still to do:
-   oil radiator installation
-   air conditioning system removal
-   carbon fiber bonnet
-       WOT box (still thinking about )

So Helix is not the answer....
Just before the finishing line there is something visible, the speed drops until i manage to shift. In the video looks ok, but many fast laps are finished in gearbox cranking and me cursing... :signLOL:

I have helix SMF paddle kit but it was used. Around 1000miles on it.  Im going to have it tested.  It maybe an issue with my gearbox, ill keep you posted.

I know the feeling, mid - high rpm and it wont go into gear  :fighting:

Thanks man!  :happy2:

I've just talked to fuscobal again, seems that the WOT-Box on track is not a good idea, because the gearbox is severely overheating. For me that is the worse news ever, my gearbox is already overheating after 2-3 fast laps, when I've installed the brake ducts I covered a part of the gearbox cooling duct that Cupra has. I will redo the brake ducts from the fog lights to get more gearbox cooling, check inside the gearbox and clutch and abort WOT-box installation.

Today was ebay day.  :signLOL:
I've ordered 2 new cheap China radiators, one to be used as on oil cooler, the other as an additional water cooler. Also I've ordered the aluminum oil filter housing from an A4 2.0 06b115417f so it can be adapted for the 1.8T oil pump, which i still need to order, by my mechanic. My plastic oil filter housing was leaking oil due to high temperatures. I bought a new plastic one, but it will happen again so this aluminum one is immortal and will replace that too.

What about rolling or extending the wheel arches a bit? I don't know if there are already wider front wings like SRS-Tec sells for Golfs mk5.

Long time since I've posted any updates here and a lot has happened.

The car lost a lot of weight and has become more track oriented, i think I'm doing not more than 2000 miles per year now.

I've done the 1.8T oil pump conversion and balance shaft delete, installed a new custom clutch from Atix Racing Solutions, Turn-One 6 point race harnesses, quick release for the racing OMP steering wheel, redesigned the brake ducts  and bought new Team Dynamics 9J front wheels to use racing slicks.

Had also a bad situation which cost me my top part of the engine and a HPFP, this chain broke. I had to buy a new Autotech pump which feels no different than APR.
I think this happened because I was to lazy to change gears. I was returning from the race track, tired and had to overtake a very slow lorry. I did that in sixth gear from 30-35 mph, when I put my foot down I believe I've forced the turbo into overboost.
It was a big set-back, but at least it's like new now:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.tinypic.com%2F2r72d5y.jpg&hash=bf5ca04ec32699c8813aebd182d89d515a8ccc2c)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi67.tinypic.com%2Fi1z7g6.jpg&hash=2d5b5e41a01aff827a217e05cfff8ca292562a15)

I've used for a short time some "not so cheap" AP Racing replacement discs from Reyland with custom bells which obviously failed:

So back to AP Racing now, there is no other way:

I'm still to solve a problem, the car was not making the same boost near the redline.
So I've changed the DV, did a PCV delete and looked for boost leaks everywhere.
I installed a new Forge actuator because I thought that the springs are worn. In the end I've rebuilt my turbo because there was shaft play and marks on the housing and blades. At the moment the turbo is working good at high rpm, boost is ok, over 17 psi. But now it seems that the Forge actuator is not working perfectly with Revo and It makes the ECU to reduce the load in the mid range. I think this is an overboost protection.
Last ting I did is to buy a GFB boost controller which I still have to install, hopefully it will be the key.

I think this has not affected too much my car's behavior on track because it is never under 4500 rpm so I've achieved a new personal best and FWD track record:

Now I've gathered everything for a DSG conversion:

New Quaife DSG LSD --- my Wavetrac will be posted up for sale
KNC gearbox
driveshafts
DSG wiring loom
DSG cooling radiator
flywheel
engine starter

I will also remap the box Revo stage 2. I hope the stock DSG clutch pack will handle Revo stage 2+ remap and track abuse. Any info will be appreciated.

I've bought some race oriented coilovers, they are on the way. I'll say goodbye to my Bilsteins PSS10, which I believe are the best road/track compromise for the money but they are too soft for what i need.
So if anyone needs them or the LSD (Wavetrac is the best out there - I choose Quaife because after all the DSG parts, a new Wavetrac was a bit above my current budget) give me a buzz.

At first seemed that the mechatronic was dead because it didn't respond to our first attempt to connect to it. So I was already looking for a new one everywhere. Yesterday I got the good news that a connection was established:

I will probably go with MRC for the coding.

Also my new AST 5300, 3 way addjustable coliovers arrived. Really hope they will help to improve my laptimes, Bilstein B16 is already a very good kit:  :driver:

And something that I should've done long ago, before i started using slicks, polyurethane bushings from Strongflex. They are a cheaper alternative to Powerflex or Superpro, but I see no reason why they wouldn't do the job just as good:

The only thing that concerns me right now is whether the Quaife LSD will fit my DSG gearbox. It seems that they are 2 types, QDF19R - 20 Tooth Parking Ring and QDF28R - 25 Tooth Parking Ring.
Early DSG gearboxes, until 2008 had 20 Tooth diffs, from 2008 onward they have 25. My gearbox is from January 2008, KNC code and I got the 25 tooth parking ring diff, hopefully it will fit. Otherwise I'll have to pay the shipping from Bucharest to UK and back and I'll have to wait for the replacement. Or use the old manual parking brake, mount the LSD without that ring and save 1-2 kgs.
If anyone knows if KNC DSG gearbox has 20 or 25 tooth ring pls share, since Quaife didn't bothered to find out.  :drinking:

This will be the front mounted DSG cooler:

Hopefully it will do the job on track because i see the really expensive kits come with an oil pump which i believe moves the oil faster between the DSG and the cooler.
Don’t know much about it or where should it be mounted. If it replaces the stock pump or works along with it.

Awesome work mate!

I'm also thinking of doing a DSG conversion for my MK5 tdi.

Waiting to get back my engine top from the workshop that will level it and make new valve seats and all that. Then it'll be ready to have all the good parts installed :)

Anyway, back to your DSG job.
Why do you change the driveshafts? - heard this wasn't needed to swap when you're doing the conversion?

Thanks man!

I've bought new driveshafts using a friend's VIN from his DSG ED30 even before my gearbox arrived but with the option to return them at my expense in case they will not fit.
I was hoping that mine will fit and get the money back. When the gearbox arrived, we tested them, but mine were different and the new ones were ok.

I don't know if this is a rule but in my case the 02Q driveshafts were different than the 02E ones.

All right, well then you should be sorted if you used a VIN matching a car that was "born" with the DSG.
What about the ECU, wire harness and all this?

I also have the 02Q 6-speed manual gearbox in my 2.0tdi which hopefully someday will have th DSG running smooth :D Replacing my engine with a freshbuild one along with new exhaust system, so if I should do the conversion it would be same with these jobs. Guess it would make the job alot easier when everything is off the car anyway.

Will also install new subframe, anti roll bars, end links, brakes etc etc.

But guess it'll make my job easier to find same model as mine and use that VIN to shop the correct parts.

What about the fram the holds the pedals? Do you change this or can you use the manuel frame that holds 3 pedals to the 2 pedals from DSG?

The ECU will have to be adapted I believe, MRC will take care of that.
I've bought a complete wiring loom from a 2013 Passat CC TSI which should be ok, we'll use the parts we need, apart from the DSG connector which is different, but we'll modify it.
At first I will use the old pedals, they will work, no problem. I will only remove the clutch pedal for weight saving. Maybe later I'll buy a DSG brake pedal.

I went for the 20 teeth parking brake LSD version. My Ed. 30 was built in February of 2008 and the gearbox code is KNB. Hope we both got it right.  :signLOL:

Loving all the new bits you bought. I've read that the external oil pump for the DSG cooler is advised. The stock pump is too weak. Hope others can help you with that upgrade too.

That’s valuable information for me, Joaquim. Thanks bro!

Since your gearbox is KNB and mine KNC, for sure I too have 20T. I will have to get the LSD changed.
I will not take the chance to overheat the gearbox, I’m going to buy an external oil pump then. :/

Ordered:
 - DSG Oil Cooler Auxiliary Pump
 - Auxiliary Oil Pump Temperature Switch

So future plans are:

 - Carbon sunroof delete
 - Rear wiper delete
 - Maybe change the engine map to MRC

Something like this, but I cannot find it in Europe (Passat, Golf, Leon, Altea use the same sunroof):

@Shoduchi (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10590) - Man, seems that my KNC gearbox which should be the same age as yours has 25T parking brake. I was about to send the diff back to Darkside Developments, but they said it is better to wait and look. My mechanic opened the gearbox today and said it has 25T. :jumping: :jumping: :jumping:
I'm very happy about this because shipping to and back from Bucharest is expensive and takes at least 10 days.

Unfortunately all my brake pads for next year are 25mm thick:

Need to find out where to machine them to 18mm now.

Just checked ETKA following your information mine must be 25T as you said. Yours came out in the Audi A3 and was produced from 11/2007 till 06/2008. Mine was produced from 05/2007 till 12/2008. :sad1:

No problem, I'm so glad that I don't have to change it.  :happy2:
If you have the possibility to check (maybe the order/invoice) will be great, it will help the guys from Darkside Development to build a database of gearbox codes and parking rings. They are already working on it. Then it will be shared with the producers to help others in the future.

After the good news with the LSD that fits the gearbox, I got the bad one, seems that the starter motor is the new version 02E911023S and I need the old one 02E911023J. Ebay here I come.

Just shipped my 20T park brake ring LSD to MFactory UK today. Then I'll have to pay the shipment of the correct version to me once they check the one I shipped. The great price I got it is now diminishing. :sad1:

Did you replace the gasket I listed in my build thread? I had to order it from AC Parts since VW doesn't sell it separately.
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG conversion in progress
Post by: teo_parvu on December 21, 2017, 02:46:31 pm
Sorry to hear that man, but are u sure? Did you check inside the gearbox? These must be the only 2 codes from MK5 with 25T.  :sad1: At least you can replace the LSD, unfortunately I cannot replace the starter because more than 14 days have passed.

 Hmm, regarding the gasket, I don't know....the gearbox is already on the car, my mechanic sort it out, I believe he reused the old one. He knows these boxes.

Another problem for me is that we are now blocked waiting for the new starter, the oil pump and the thermostat for it. I did the fatal mistake to buy it without tracking from Demon-Tweeks, because it was advertised to arrive in 4-6 days. I've emailed and called them telling that the only reason I did not pay the extra 10 pounds for a tracked service is because 4-6 days was ok for me but the  answer is:

"Your order was despatched via an economy untracked service on the 12/12/2017.
Due to it being an untracked service there are no tracking details for the parcel and the couriers terms and conditions state that they have up to 30 working days to deliver any post.
If after this date you have still not received the parcel please contact our customer service team."

They should put a remark that delivery could take up to 30 days.
These is also no possibility to get my money back until 30+ working days have passed, so I can order again with a better shipping option.  :scared:

I haven't checked inside the gearbox. I need the car for daily use. But seeing that the equivalent gearbox from the A3 (yours) is already 25T, mine must be as well. Mine was also made till 12/2008 so maybe I should have looked for that date before ordering in the website. MFactory just lists 20T LSD for DSG for mk5, so I guess it was easier to ask for a swap because of that.

Yeah, they are the same generation 99,99% they are the same on the inside also. Unfortunately there is no clear information about when the MK5 got the 25T gearbox anywhere.
Seems that I have to dig deep in my account to buy another thing: adjustable sway bar end links. The ASTs lowered the car so much that the OEM links don't fit anymore.

Whoops, didn't know that. From what i see in some googled pictures they will fit, but last night at about 2 AM I bought these:

http://www.venommotorsport.com/product/suspension/SU54935/

Hope they'll be up to the job, they have good reviews on ebay, are aluminium made with with uniball "Lightweight aluminium bodies CNC machined from 7075 aluminium. The motorsport specification ball joints are nickel plated steel with high polished stainless steel inserts."

Hope they're not cheap China made.

What a build   Loving the brakes and suspension  :happy2:   I didn't think AP Racing did J hook discs?  Were they Reyland's own discs?  I had AP Racing years ago and the grooved discs lasted 60k miles on the road.  No cracks.

Where did you get the Li-ion battery?

How do you find the Wagner intercooler vs S3?  Did it add any lag?

Great work  :happy2:
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG conversion in progress

Thanks, Pud!  :happy2: I try to keep up with the guys from this time attack series in which I participate.
Hmmm, good one with this Wagner, I thought I'll will see a massive improvement over the S3 ic during the summer.
For sure is better but not by a landslide, I believe the difference is on the track only. But do not worry about any lag with K04, it feels even better than with the S3 ic. This is strange because it has a bigger volume, but I think they did some serious testing and got a superior design.

I got the battery from a motorcycle site: www.germany-motorsports.com
Had only one problem with it, when I had to stay with the hazard lights on for 30 mins it was almost flat dried. It took me more than 24h to charge it with it's special charger (at first the charged declared it dead, but I insisted and ar some point charging begun). Since then absolutely flawless, starts the car perfectly, but I try to avoid staying with consumers and engine turned off for more than 5 mins.

The J hooked disks are Reyland's own. I tought they will fit my AP Racing bells as a cheaper alternative. I have checked offset, pcd, etc. but I forgot to check the mounting holes. My original kit and bells have 11 holes and Reyland had 12. I realized that only when we were trying to install then.  :fighting:
I ordered new custom bells from Reyland and I got to use them for less then 1000km and 20 hard laps before they cracked, even tough I have big brake cooling ducts. So now I've ordered discs from AP.

I see you got some podium finishes, which is great  :happy2:

I was looking at the APR intercooler, very expensive  :surprised:  Maybe the Wagner is a good alternative.  I don't track my car, I'm just trying to run more timing with the Revo 2+ tune  :happy2:  S3 cooler starts to warm up after a few hard pulls and timing hits -3 with T5 on the SPS settings.  I like to see zero pull
Good to hear you don't feel any lag with the Wagner!

I did wonder about that with lithium ion batteries.  I want to move my battery to the boot so I have more room for intake design and use the TT-S MAF to move it away from turbo turbulence.  The MAF gets a bit of oil on it from the rear PCV.  How about this bad boy, about the same AH rating as stock - http://www.lithiumion-batteries.com/products/12-volt-lithium-ion-batteries/12v-75ah-lithium-ion-battery.php    But it's heavy and expensive

You will have no problem with genuine AP Racing discs  :happy2:  Back in the day I used those with Pagid RS15 pads, which was a great combination on the road.  Would be even better on the track!

Yeah, manage to win the championship this year - race class. But this thing is growing fast and I'd like to be there next year too.

When I bought the intercooler I've seen a thread with a lot of graphs and tests where this intercooler was clearly superior, can't remember where exactly now, but you can't go wrong with it.
I'm racing with B9 T5 F9, 0 timing retard at 35 degrees Celsius, but I also have extra water and oil coolers.

Unfortunately that link doesn't work now. Lithium batteries have a lot of starting power, their problem is capacity. The best lithium batteries are https://www.liteblox.de/, with carbon fiber case, but I think my right kidney is cheaper.
I'd recommend something from http://www.go-aliant.com/ ,they seem to be the best value, but make sure to check PB eq chart, a 20ah lithium battery has a higher PB equivalent.

Today was a good one for me, my OEM paddle shifters and Stance+ droplinks arrived. They are nicer than expected, seem like a quality product:

I've ordered a Carbon fiber adjustable splitter.

The next step is to improve the aerodynamics of the car so along the splitter I've ordered:
 - VW Cup rear wing
 - 1K0825237P - under-body panel - to improve airflow beneath the car
 - Ford Focus RS MK2 style bonnet/fender vents
 - regular Leon 1P rear bumper which will be cut for maximum airflow and minimum drag
I will complete the under-body paneling with 0.5 mm aluminium sheet.

Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG conversion in progress
Post by: teo_parvu on February 11, 2018, 05:55:40 am
Last night I had the first test drive with the DSG. I now have MRC DSG software, but Cupra's software doesn't recognize the gearbox, it works but it is far from ok. The gear changes are slow and it never downshifts properly. The paddle shifters don't work neither.
Unfortunately Revo can't solve the software issue so I will change the tuner. For this I need RS4 fuel injectors and BOSCH 044 LPFP.

Another problem is that the cheap ARB links are clunking and it drives me mad. I've heard that Whiteline are no better and Racingline are damn expensive. Maybe Superpro....? What are you using guys?
@Shoduchi (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10590), you've told about using MB Vito W639 droplinks, could you please tell me where can I find more information on this? I could only find that they will fit MK4 platftorm. Tx
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG conversion in progress
Post by: Shoduchi on February 11, 2018, 09:47:46 am
I've read on Facebook 3 or 4 guys recommending those drop links for our cars with coilovers. I've recommended them to a friend in my country who has BC Racing and he confirmed me that they fit.

Love your coolers setup. Hope you can sort the DSG shifting. Why not a DW65V pump instead?

The coolers are overkill for today's weather, water stays at 70-80 degrees C. I will have to cover some ducts.

I've missed this view:

Thanks for the info man, now I'll to decide between Superpro, I found them in Portugal  at a good price 150 euros and MB Vito OEM end-links.
The only reason to use Bosch is that the new tuner has experience with it. He told me to get the RS4 injectors because it it the way he works. The gearbox will remain MRC tuned. I hope to get this fixed soon.

Congratz with the DSG mate!

Did you have to wire anything to the central electronic module?
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG conversion in progress

Thanks! I still have a lot of software issues to solve, it is functional, but slower than manual now. Fortunately wiring to the central electronic module was not needed.

Get the 2nd gen RS4 injectors. They work well with our engines. I think AKS Tuning can source them with the adapter loom. I have the VWR drop links and they clunk a little on cobble roads.

Post by: teo_parvu on February 11, 2018, 12:04:20 pm
Unfortunately I have no time to get anything from UK, I'm scheduled for the end of the next week and i get them from the guy who is doing the software update and the new remap. He did a Skoda Octavia with 2 TFSi engines and 2 DSG gearboxes, I believe he knows what he has to do.
Tomorrow morning I'll call to see where I can get some Vito drop-links and get them installed along with a new wheel alignment since even the most expensive ones (VWR) clunk.
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG conversion in progress
Post by: Shoduchi on February 11, 2018, 02:53:43 pm
The VWR drop links clunk because they're all metal and they rotate, so the sides of the rose ball joint will eventually touch the damper/coilover drop link bracket where they're attached. It's just on bad surface roads where the whole car shakes.
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG conversion in progress
Post by: teo_parvu on February 11, 2018, 06:02:15 pm
I'm thinking that maybe they were installed too short and the sway-bar is touching the driveshaft or too long and the sway-bar is touching the lower arm.
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG conversion in progress
Post by: Shoduchi on February 11, 2018, 06:48:55 pm
You'd see contact marks on the driveshaft. I'm referring to my personal experience with my VWR drop links. I have no contact marks on my driveshaft and I can hear some light metallic clunks on flat roads with small bumps (like cobble stone roads).
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG conversion in progress
Post by: teo_parvu on February 11, 2018, 06:57:28 pm
On mine it would be hard to detect new marks on the driveshafts because the brake ducts are always touching.  :happy2:

Today I got more bad news.
I went to do a wheel alignment and I've bought some MB Vito endlinks to change there. We did a full inspection of points of impact, we found nothing. After, we removed the adjustable endlink and nothing changed. The guy who usually does my wheel alignment told me that he thinks it a problem with the shock. Told me to put my hand on the wheel and he balanced the car. I could feel the knocking/clunking even with the endlink off.  :sad1:
At this point he told me that it could be something wrong with the front left shock. I got the car back to my mechanic, where I installed the AST. I hope he's got some time these days to check the left shock, and Install MB Vito endlinks just to be sure, everything else seems fine.

Sad to know the issue with the front shock. Should be covered by the warranty, right? :sad1:
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG conversion in progress
Post by: teo_parvu on February 12, 2018, 03:38:18 pm
Hey! Yes it is, but...I was hoping to have a good car for the 29th March time attack race. I'm still in with DSG and software/boost problems, sending the shock to AST in Netherlands and getting it back will take ages.
Still need to install the rear wing, front splitter, bonnet and fender vents and do some tests. I'm hoping that such an expensive piece cannot fail in 10 km of usage. Maybe it's something else, I'm waiting for some feedback from the mechanic now.  :sad1:

UPDATE: I've just got a phone call from the mechanic. He said that after playing with the adjustment knobs and hardening a bit the shocks, he balanced the car with the hand on the wheel is gone. He will install Vito endlinks and we'll see what happens.

I think I know why the paddle shifters don't work also. They don't even lit up.
The control module and the shifters I bought are for MK6 Golf:

5K0959542
5K0951527
5K0951528

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi66.tinypic.com%2Fo030ux.jpg&hash=35a70be85ae92d110c4ecf2153665de1bfdfab6f)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi67.tinypic.com%2Ft7o49e.jpg&hash=ba60bcfc10eac96a2de6fdb1976c58de3be142eb)

And I've read that if you retrofit a MK6 steering wheel on the Mk5, you need a LIN 2 capable steering wheel control module. I haven't checked mine because I don't have the car, but I'm pretty sure it is LIN 1.3

So I think I need one of these 3:
1K0953549CK
1K0953549CH
1K0953549CD

If anyone knows more about this please help!

Get the 1K0953549CH module. It's the most compatible. Even good when you want a mk7 steering wheel, although you need to add some more emulator modules and do some hardware changes.

Also buy a new cruise control stalk if you're buying the CH module. You cruise control stalk must be revision "G" to work with the CH module.

Pffff...it never ends.  :fighting:

Just got this one, was about to take it to the mechanic, one hour drive:

It will not work at all? Or only the cruise control or some functions. As long as the headlights and signals work I'm happy with it.

I've just read that if you do some clever wiring it might work, but the pictures of this thread don't work anymore:

Today my mechanic took the control module. He will install it and in case i don't have revision "G" cc stalk he'll merge the yellow wires to pin 10.
The RS4 fuel injectors are in, runner flap delete is done and BOSH 044 lpfp will be ready today also:

New ECU and mapping in. The guy doing the remap says the car pulls like a train and the gearbox is lightning fast. But they cannot do some proper runs because it is cold and wet outside and even on 4th gear it cannot put the power down completely.
Can’t wait until tomorrow to get it.
One more issue remains, the CC stalk is dead atm and I have almost no powersteering. Tomorrow I’ll sort that somehow. I hope that the pins beetween the stalk and the cotrol module were not bent.

UPDATE:

I've reinstalled the adjustable droplinks, the noise is gone after softening the suspension.
Seems that the CH steering wheel control module was defective, I'm back on mine now, now everything works again (power-steering, cc stalk) except the paddles.
Today I did a wheel alignment and immediately after the car pulls to the left and ESP is interfering, I had to disable it.
I thought this is because I did a G85 recalibration yesterday (to get the power steering back) with no wheel alignment after installing the AST suspension. I tried to recalibrate G85 control module again, but at some point I did something wrong and now I'm left with this:

(https://preview.ibb.co/mnMfCc/IMG_5731_1.jpg) (https://ibb.co/hK1fCc)

Anyway, I haven't bothered anymore with this, I will change the steering wheel control module again in one week so I will have to do it again, I just hope that it will solve the pulling to the left and ESP problem.
In the meantime I left my car at the shop to get a front splitter, rear wing, bonnet/fender vents and rear wiper delete. I've done all this quickly because it started snowing and it was my last opportunity to move it on summer tires.
The new RS4 fuel pressure regulator it is on it's way and I got these thingies:

After installing the third rev CH control module and new CC stalk, I've managed to get the paddles and everything else to work. :fighting:
Now I'm left with errors on cornering lights, which I believe has something to do with the coding since I don't have fog-lights anymore and a gearbox error because I don't have a key locking mechanism when not in "P".
I've installed the extensions also, they look good with the OMP steering wheel:

Another very annoying thing is that I cannot use the quick release anymore and I'm left with a China made steering wheel hub which makes my steering wheel 3-4 degrees to the left. New OMP hub ordered, I hope the Chinese din't do a perfect copy and that's why my steering wheel is not centered.

I've ordered new ATS DTC 8.5J ET35 wheels and now the car is at the shop getting hood vents, splitter, rear wing and wider rear wheel arches to fit the wider wheels. I still have 2x 9J Team Dynamics wheels for the front axle to use with wider tires on very hot weather. Today they got a well deserved cleaning. They were full of melted brake pad materials:

With some patience and a lot of WD40 I managed to get them like this:

Guys, anyone knows how can I get rid of these errors and the annoying yellow light on my dashboard?
I got these after my friend replaced the last CH steering wheel control module:

I've checked every fuse/bulb.
I don't have fog-lights anymore, but they have been coded out. What am I missing? Any new leads?

Aren't those the side lamps that American cars have on the front bumper? Maybe you need to code yours for Europe?

Well it can be alot of different things mate.. Does your car have original xenon lights? - If so, then check the leveling sensor at the left rear axle..  If there's nothing wrong here then see you CECM coding (09 central elect.) and see what the coding says about the cornering light :)

Maybe you need to code out the cornering lights with the fog lamps? Have you checked if that option is deactivated?

I'll google and see what I cand find, maybe there is a bit somewhere and it will solve it.

Hmmm...I have the original xenon lights, but they were running fine, this started after replacing the control module. I've tried some things on/off in central electrics, unfortunately it didn't solve it.
I thing I might have to go to someone specialized in retrofitting.

I've already did that or at least i think so. I will try to check everything again in central electrics when I'll have my car back.
If I don't find anything, I'll try to find someone skilled in VCDS coding.

Normally when a car gives this error, it's has always been the leveling sensor that's making the issue .. Would defo check that, on LHD cars it sits on the left side on the rear subframe

Next week the car should be back from the rear wing installation, hopefully the snow will clear and I’ll check it. I believe I should remove it, inspect for any physical damage, grease it, wd40, reinstall it. Maybe it will solve the issue.

It's snowing for 14 hours here in Bucharest, now we have at least 20 cm of snow. While at home with some time to spare, I decided to make my own wing end plates, never liked the plastic ones that came with the wing:

(https://thumb.ibb.co/dmak7x/881430_AE_BD2_A_41_AF_BA95_13_B0_CF64_E0_D9.jpg) (https://ibb.co/dmak7x) (https://thumb.ibb.co/nMgE0H/DC8_C13_AE_ECF4_4279_80_B9_F42_F1_DA92_FFC.jpg) (https://ibb.co/nMgE0H)

I bought a small angle grinder and I've cut them out from the splitter plate leftovers. The result is much better that the original ones:

While I was doing the plates the guys at shop finished the mounts for the wing, the original Golf VI ones don't fit on my Leon's roof top:  :fighting:

 :drinking: Cheers Joaquim!

Thanks good to know, I will not bother with it anymore. I drove a PDK Cayman S and the software was so good that you never needed paddles, perfect downshifts. MRC softwere is almost as good, just needed a little earlier shifts.

There are many questions now: How quick will I adapt to paddles? Will the DSG cooling work? Will the brakes keep up with the new speed? How good are the new coilovers? Will I feel any downforce and adapt?  ...
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG converted track car

I think you'll adapt pretty quickly to just using the paddles. Your brakes will suffer a bit more, I hope they can handle the extra stress.

About the DSG cooling. I read that Alex Kerr only liked this cooling system for our DSG: http://sspperformance.shopgate.com/item/3635 (http://sspperformance.shopgate.com/item/3635). It's very expensive. I never felt any problems with mine so far, I hope my bigger oil cooler will handle my needs.

The biggest concern are the brakes, last year in the middle of the summer I overheated them despite the brake ducts. Under hard braking the weight transfer rear-front was massive. The front brakes couldn't handle it for more than 1-2 laps. That was the main reason I bought the ASTs, they should help keeping some weight on the rear, reduce nose-dive effect under hard braking. I have 310mm and Pagid RS19 rear brakes that were doing nothing, now they should also help.

I agree with Alex, that is the only working cooling system that you can buy. That's why my DSG cooling is inspired by SSP. They are using an oil pump to get the oil to the radiator, because they are connected to the DSG in the low pressure area directly to the oil pan. I believe they are the only ones doing it like this and it is the right way. Otherwise the hoses, radiator could fail under the massive pressure if they are connected to the top side. 99% that they are using a Mocal/Setrab 2.1 LPH oil pump and Setrab oil radiator because there are some unique marking on their pump that I've recognized.

What we did is to connect to the lower pressure oil pan (with the help of a very talented welder, the one who build my new wing mounts) and use the same Mocal oil pump as SSP with our own temperature switch and high quality hoses:

Normally it should work but it needs to pass the track test.

A dirty car with a big gay wing:

Clearly I need spacers for the everyday wheels, but I'm quite out of funds and never liked the idea of spacers.
More important is that I still don't have constant 130 bar rail pressure, on the medium rpm it sometimes drops to 110.
I've changed the RS4 fpr, no improvement. Now I've disassemble and resemble the HPFP. Tomorrow I'll do some logging...still hoping I will not have to change the pump.  :sad1:

Will the rear wing supports hold the downforce without bending the rear wing spoiler? Seems a bit too further away to really hold much weight.

Are you getting any ignition timing retardation when the rail pressure drops? Or a too rich air/fuel mixture? Or is it the other way around, and the boost drops to compensate the lack of fuel?
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG converted track car
Post by: teo_parvu on March 27, 2018, 06:24:10 am
Heylo! The roof of the car has been hardened where the mounts seat, it can hold my weight now, l’m a bit concern that it could develop play on the long term. The guy who installed it sais that it is highly unlikely.

I have no missfire, boost is fine, It holds 1.2@7000 rpm, no timing retardation (that is absolut perfect 0.0.0.0). Good ideea to check the AFR. Before the new software the boost demand dropped at high rpm, maybe there was a lack of fueling, but now i have RS4 injectors and Bosh LPFP.

Got a bigger problem now...I'm glad the race has been postponed. My clutch started slipping while doing logs yesterday so I'll leave the pump problem for now. First I thought that I have no grip because it was really wet and that the wing creates so much drag that I could barely reach the end of fifth gear. But today on dry tarmac it was clear, the clutch is gone.

I really need some help to get the latest revision OEM clutch for DSG 6 DQ250. Anyone can help with the code? Is the Golf VII R DSG clutch compatible?

Only from the 7R, since the 7.5R has a DQ380 with 7 speeds. You'll need to get a new shims kit to put the new clutches with the factory slack. Check the video on the 3:15 time.

Thanks a lot man!  :happy2:

Do you know if the shims kit comes with 02E398029C?
I still don't know if I have a clutch or mechatronics problem. Now it slips, goes in N and jerks on R an first gear. I'm suspecting the mechatronics now, but I've called one of the best DSG specialists and he told me that we should see errors on VCDS for mechatronics and that I could have too much oil in the gearbox.

After I've taken out 1L DSG oil, the car behavior is a lot better but I've found metal filings in it shining on the sun.
I've decided to change the clutch pack, oil and filter as soon as possible so I'll have some time for at least 200-300 km of city driving before the race.

Nothing gay about that wing, it's a track car  :happy2:

Spacers - yuk, hate them.  Research 'scrub radius'  :happy2:  Always better to do proper TT wide track with arms than throw spacers on

Fuel pump - what HPFP do you have?  How old is it?  Could be a dying LPFP.  Pop the HPFP out and smell the oil that gathers in the chain cover casing.  If it smells of raw gas, the HPFP piston seal has gone.   The trouble is VCDS only measures pressure, not flow, but as your pressure is down 20 bar, it's not looking good  :ashamed:
As Shoduchi said, see what the short term lambda is on hard boost.  If it's pegged out at +25%, time for a new pump.

Good luck with the clutch pack.  Your hard track work is killing your hardware  :happy2:

Thanks man!  :happy2:

I've improved the looks of the wing by wrapping the aluminium legs and using different end plates. I quite like it.
Since I have to move the car around the city it is unmounted now. I don't want to find out what is the police opinion about it.

I already have the TT arms, but I'm using 9J wheels for the track, same ones used by the Milltek VW Cup. The street wheels now look a bit funny under the widened wheel arches.
But I don't want to mess with the scrub radius that I believe VAG has researched with spacers, I'll leave it as it is.

The HPFP is my original one upgraded last year with Autotech internals after the chain between the camshafts broke and took my APR pump with it. My friend reinstalled the internals this week, it seems to operate better now. I had the opportunity to do some logs, I'm 5-10 bars down only when the turbo loads, when it overboosts. I didn't log everything because after the DSG decided to go in N I took the car home quickly.

Next week I hope to have the new clutch in, something I should have done before fitting a 100K km old DSG into a track car, but I thought I'll get away with it.

I’m really happy that with the new clutch pack, it’s transformed. Thank you Joaquim for the video, it really helped to calculate the shim thickness correctly.
I'm still medium boost until I'll get a software update. It seems that a lower torque value could've been sent to the DSG software. That could be the cause for the fried clutch.

I got the wheels from Germany, you can try also VW Racing Poland.

The car is running ok, but it is pretty hard to keep my hands off the boost controller until the software update.  :driver:
Unfortunately a new problem has come up. It seems that while driving the car on D, at low rpm, immediately after some spirited driving, the oil pressure red light is coming up and I have to stop. After 5 mins, I start the car and everything seems ok again. Oil level is fine.

I have the 1.8T pump which makes lower pressure than the 2.0T oil pump, but I didn't have this problem over the course of 1 year. My theory is that I never drove the car at such low rpm as now, while in D the DSG gearbox shifts at under 2000 rpm and maybe this causes the pump to do lower pressure than my 2.0T pressure sensor is expecting.
My mechanic told me that we'll first change the oil and filter and told me he'll check my oil pressure. I don't know how he will do that, I don't have a gauge, but he's assuring me that he can do it.
And I have to check the subframe bolts, I've heard a knock at lower speeds and I know that was unmounted to change the clutch. It never ends... :phew:

Can't wait to see the wheels fitted, they look brilliant

What oil are you running?  You could try a thicker grade to help with the lower pressure?

Your mechanic will likely connect a mechanical pressure gauge to the outlet on the oil filter housing  :happy2:

Do you have the TyrolSport deadset fitted to the subframe?  It sorts that problem once and for all!

No, it doesn't ever end!  All cars are the same though.  At least with these cars the prices are reasonable.  If you were racing a 911, your bank account would die very quickly!!

You're a car master, I've spoken with the mechanic, that is exactly how he will control the oil pressure. :notworthy:

I think now I have Motul 300V Power 5W40. I have to check when I'll get home on Wednesday (here is the Orthodox Ester and It's a small holiday) what I have in my reserve. I believe I have 2 types, 6L Motul 300V Power 5W40 and 4L Motul 300V Competition 15W-50 (which is not enough because of the extra oil radiator, I believe I need a bit over 5L).
I don't know exactly what to use because 5W40 worked well until the DSG and If I keep the car in manual mode, always over 2000 rpms, everything seems ok. It might be that the oil gets thinner in time, I have about 6000km with it, some of them pretty hard ones. But my mechanic also suggested thicker oil and I could try 15W50 of which I only need 2 more litres.

You're right, It never ends. A problem which I thought I solved has reappeared, seems that the hpfp is faulty. I'm getting some mid rpms fuel cuts which are getting worse. Last time I've logged the hpfp I've seen numbers like 117-125 but this was not felt, now the cuts are obvious. I'm worried that I'll not get away without a new pump.  :phew:

On the plus side the DSG is brilliant. Now, with the new clutch pack it is lightning fast and I love the sound. I can't wait to see how it looks on those wheels with slicks too. Not much time left until 22.04 and I need to solve everything whith whatever resources I have.
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG converted track car
Post by: pudding on April 07, 2018, 04:22:22 pm
That is how I would do it  :happy2:

They are very good oils  :happy2:  I always had good luck with this and it's reasonably priced - https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwivh5evuqjaAhUMJMAKHYLxBQUQFghjMAE&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.opieoils.co.uk%2Fp-68898-fuchs-titan-race-pro-s-10w-50-ester-fully-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx&usg=AOvVaw0YQApCaUyPfbD4qOR9z7sq

So you have an external oil cooler?  Maybe that could be causing a pressure drop?  You could try bypassing it and see if the pressure comes back to normal?

I do wonder about these aftermarket HPFPs. I have a Loba pump, 3 years old now, and I also get really bad flat spots around 2000rpm.  I haven't logged the rail pressure yet but maybe the aftermarket pumps just aren't as well made as OEM and don't last?  Not sure!

Glad you like the DSG   I like it too, especially the latest version in the MK7.5   I hate it in auto mode though, it's always trying to find top gear too soon and when you kick down it seems to take too long to find the right gear.  If only there was a way to lock it to the paddles only!

Good luck with the problems mate, I'm sure you will sort them all out  :happy2:

A far better chassis, engine, is38, more refined, just wow... Best of luck with it!

I have my DSG locked to what I do with the paddles/gear lever when in Manual Mode. It just down shifts by itself. It never up shifts. You can have that with a remap. Also, no kick down if I press too much the accelerator.

I only drive in Manual Mode but I do rarely use the gear lever when turning the wheel too much and needing to change a gear.

I’ve lately used the DSG in manual mode too, the only problem is when the wheel is too turned. I still have trouble with the stick because it is unatural to shift exactly oposite to a secvential, but I’m slowly getting used to it.

A small update:

I've logged the HPFP again, the car was clearly struggling to accelerate but the pump was doing 130+ bar, so the pump is not the root cause. That was a surprise, so I pulled over thinking to check for misfire, timing issues, etc. It was the last time this problem appeared and all the data logged looks good. Magically the problem disappeared.  :jumping:

I have just 8 days until the race and a low budget so I've ordered a new set of subframe spacers (Tyrol Sport will have to wait for next time  :sad1:), 15W-50W Motul Competition oil and a new filter, a CV boot (I have a broken one and it made a real mess) and a new diesel undertray for good airflow 1K0 825 237.
After everything will be installed I should do a new wheel alignment so I've scheduled one next Friday. With that I will be finally ready.

Good stuff  :happy2:

No no, I haven't bought a Golf R   I have driven one though. I was just saying I find the throttle response very laggy in auto mode.  It's more the gearbox than the engine though  :happy2:  With the paddles it's fine.  It can be dangerous in auto actually.  A couple of occasions I'd go for an overtake, shove my foot right down and it feels like it's slammed the brakes on whilst it faffs around finding a gear.  Really bad.  Not everyone will experience that, but I seem to find weaknesses in anything very quickly

You're not the only one, Pudd...I found this quite scary. I was trying to overtake while I still had some visibility and it took 1 sec to select the gear.  :scared: I'm trying to anticipate this and decelerate a bit before putting my foot down, but in a real emergency this is no solution.
I find it easy to use it in manual now.

Yep, bad isn't it.  The things car makers don't tell you when you sign on the dotted line

But yes, manual mode only for me.  I prefer to be in control of the gears rather than a computer!  Just a shame you can't leave it in manual mode permanently.  It switches back to auto when you next start the car!  I do really like DSG though, much much better for getting a good launch without bogging the engine down  :happy2:

What a day - Sunday ...

First of all a little about the race, time attack is more like a qualifying day in F1, you need to do a fast lap. We were split into 3 groups (green, yellow, blue) and 6 classes (Street, Tuned, Supersport, Race, Race+ and Unlimited) and 2 new ones according to some international rules that require roll cage (Pocket Rocket and Clubsprint) each claass with a specific weight/power ratio where coefficients are added for race tyres, adjustable suspension, aero, etc. After the technical inspection, I was in Race class.
For each group there are 3 15 min practice session in the morning, then there is a break, drivers briefing and 2 15 min race sessions. Then the first 5 from each class compete in a final session named Superlap that consists in warmup lap, fast lap, cooling lap.

I arrived at ROTAC (Romanian Time Attack Challenge) despite not doing any test lap with the car. I didn't know what to expect and I wanted to see where the package driver/car stands. So I've tried to get used to the car as quickly as possible, pushing it.
I beat my last year's record (1:54.238) in the first practice session (1:52.7), then in the second, I dropped one more second to 1:51.7. This was it, was wow, shaking, maximum happiness ... The time was so good, I was moved to the superior class, RACE+, according to the rules:

11.2 The ”104” Rule During practice or competition sessions, if the race officials observe a vehicle registering lap times lower than the average lap time of the imedtiately upper class, the respective vehicle will be promoted to the upper class for the following sessions. Average lap time means the average amount of times between "best time" of class and "best time" + 4%.

I was glad anyway, I still had some reserve and I was leading my class 2 seconds away from a 991 Turbo after the first 2 practice sessions, and second overall after a 991 GT3 CUP.  :surprised:

I was exited, but a DSG oil patch under the car was dragging me back on Earth. In the first race session race, a strange Nissan racecar with a wide wing didn't let me pass so I decided to do a cooldown and try again on the next lap. Then came the moment of panic, rear left puncture. At the same time unfortunately a BMW left the track and the session was to be restarted after the track would be safe again. I went urgently in the pits where a very nice guy from Ukraine helped me with a wheel (used Michelin CUP2 on OZ Ultraleggera). With one slick tyre and a semislick I was again at 1:54, last year's record, when the race was restarted.

Unfortunately the rear was at a lower level of grip now and in the second session I did 1:53.8 and 1:53.9 with the DSG on "false neutral" 50m before the finish line overheated because I tried 2 fast laps consecutively. I was now second in my new class RACE+ behind the 911 turbo who was doing lower and lower times, was now at 1:51.9.

In the superlap session I pushed a bit over the limit ended up off the track on a fast left corner (the semislick tyre was on the right and the slick on the left).
End of the day with second in RACE +, the Turbo did 1:50.8 in superlap. Overall, mega-satisfied, car, result, atmosphere, friends.
I'll come back with pictures, I hope to get some in a few days but first I need to show you how good everything looked after the practice sessions, only the GT3 Cup was faster:

https://speedhive.mylaps.com/Sessions/4808591

Overall mega happy, I'm really pleased how the car drives now, and I still have to adapt. I feel there's more...hope

:happy2: Yes it was unbelievably fast, in the practice sessions the Leon was between the 991 GT3 Cup and 991 Turbo S and at the end of the day right behind them. Now, because I've been promoted to the next class, I have to find ways to increase my power and reduce weight. TTE420 sounds good now, too bad I'm out of funds....

(https://preview.ibb.co/cn3N9H/IMG_6594.jpg) (https://ibb.co/m3ch9H)

On Friday, just before the race, I had the opportunity to get a passenger lap with Simone Tempestini, junior WRC world rally champion and god some good tips.

Thanks, man! I was woooow....surprised, how fast the car felt. I'm really hoping that the DSG will hold, that false neutral was not a good sign. I also find a bit strange how the Turbo S dropped 3 seconds after the break, I suspect a "party mode" for race sessions.

That's very good! You can still test if the Nitrous Formula Race octane booster can allow you to push more your engine safely. At the highest concentration it was verified to increase the octane rating (RON) by 2,8. The best in ex eaquo with another brand
that was more expensive.

Thanks! I should look into anything that can give me more power safely. I also need to get a bigger DSG cooler and more weight reduction. I have the worse weight/power ratio in my class now.
Sometimes when the oil is really hot I get pressure problems, I'm thinking that not buying the OEM 1.8T oil pump was a mistake. I bought Kolbenschmidt:

Maybe it's not OE quality. :/

Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG converted track car
Post by: pudding on April 25, 2018, 09:44:30 am
OK cool  :happy2:

I mentioned that kit because it also changes the oil filter housing to the metal spin on type. This is because the EA113 oil pump has the pressure regulator built in. This kit moves the regulator to the oil filter housing to maintain proper pressure. It might be why you have pressure issues running a 1.8T with shaft delete? Maybe a full delete is the solution!
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG converted track car
Post by: teo_parvu on April 25, 2018, 10:18:04 am
I told you, you're the car master and I'm anything but... :happy2:

I'm pretty sure that changing the oil pump will not solve anything, but my mechanic tells me that his solution with Suzuki Swift filter (allows higher pressure), Audi A4/Passat oil filter housing 06B115417F (it may have the regulator and that's why he is using it), 1.8T oil pump  and balance shaft delete works and that I should've bought the OEM oil pump. So I just want to take this out of consideration. He will also check everything again . I'm now thinking that the oil pump might be too week for the extra radiator.

Because this is happening only when the oil is super hot and I'm on cooldown lap under 2000 rpms, I'll change again the oil from Motul 15W-50 to even thicker Millers CFS 10W-60 NT+, maybe it will help.

Thanks man!

I was about to give a bad review for ASTs before the race, but now I can tell that they are one of the best performance mods out there. For street use, better get another set.
At least mine, with hard springs, even at the softest setting it is useless for everyday use, you feel every dent on the road. The harness jumps on the bar, driving me crazy, i'm at the second undertray in 2 months because the car is very low, I can feel some knocking noises when I'm on soft setting and my front left adjusting knob fell off in 1000 km of road use, the remaining rod puncturing one CV boot. This is not covered by warranty, by the way.
On the track tough...they are wow, the car is quickly stabilized between corners, there is no nose dive anymore under hard braking, really good traction and the overall feeling of the car is on another level. Could be that the aero mods are also contributing, but the car feels 911 quick and this gives me a lot of confidence.

My new DSG clutch is slipping again... :sad1:
I'm a bit desperate now, since race 2 is in 3 days. There's no way i could change the clutch again that quick and the problem seems bigger then that. MRC DSG remap is not holding my torque with the OEM clutch.
Tomorrow I'll change the DSG map to Dynodrome, it's the best thing I can do until Saturday. It's a greek company specialized in drag racing with DSG. They are stating 600+ nm on stock clutches with their DSG tune guaranteed.

Yeah man, with a good boost controller I could limit the torque on mid rpm where it is really savage, but with mine I can only lower the boost everywhere and loose a lot of power.  :sad1:
I'm really hoping that the new tune will solve this. They say "We are the only company guaranteed that the stock clutches not sleep, you shouldn’t worry about"

Well, a map tweak to reduce the boost a bit on the slipping RPM won't hurt that much your available engine power on track, I think. It shouldn't slip on high RPM where you'll drive it more. Don't you agree?

I’m back in the game, the new remap did the trick.
It was a painful week, we couldn’t write the new map, the K-line wire was not connected since the conversion. At first we tought there is a protection or a software missmatch somewhere because we only got “unknown ecu hardware” error. Thankfully, after trying with different tools sent urgently from Greece, one clever guy checked the wiring and discovered the missing connection.
Now I see 14-15bar constantly, even saw 17+ one time in the logs. The shifts are more aggressive, and I can feel this. Don’t know if it is normal.
Now I wonder if I should do a DSG recalibration.

I needed to do a DSG reset after the new engine and DSG remaps.

I’ve talked with the guys, they did the recalibration already. They’ve also told me that this is the way it should feel, there’s nothing wrong.
Another good thing, I feel that the DSG is not overheating anymore. Maybe there was a slight slip that was generating heat. I’ll know for sure tomorrow.

If it was slipping it would get hot much faster. Hope it's all sorted now. Enjoy your track time! We'll wait for your final feedback.

The DSG was perfect this time and I got my first win with a new personal and FWD track record 1:51.537.

This time I had some understeer, whenever I tried to go faster, the laptime was worse. Might be the near end-of-life front slicks, the fact that I lowered the back by 1.5cm or the wider rear slicks. Anyway, this was the fastest lap of the day:

In the final session the 997 Turbo S came really close, 0.1 between us, but I got it. ;)

I'll post more pictures when I'll get them, but first one made with the phone with the racing wheels on:

While still waiting for some pictures from Race 2 on Motorpark Romania, I've completed Race 3 on Hungaroring.
A very good result - 2:05.412 with an enormous mistake, braking on the curb, but enough for 2 podiums - 3rd in Magyar Time Attack and 1st in Romanian Time Attack Challenge:

And one training lap with the wife, loosing left paddle-shifter  :signLOL:

I didn't feel any difference on the track between the 2 LSD's, so I quite like Quaife more because it seems to do the same job for less money. I don't know about wet or gravel, and I don't care much.

ASTs are far superior on the race track than my old Bilstein B16, but really hard and at least in my opinion, not for road use. They will cost more to run them everyday and they are no where near as confortable as B16.

@Shoduchi (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10590)  I use 10/10 on the B16 on smooth tracks (aka not Nurburgring)...

I've only done 4 laps with fuscobal's car, I personally like AST's more on track and I believe they are faster, but they're more expensive than Ohlins Road and Track and almost unusable on anything else than good tarmac. I had to choose another road back from Hungaroring to avoid 30 km of bumpy surface.

Hi Teo,
I'm getting ready to build a race car and wanted to know why did you swap the manual box for DSG? With the exact same config was the DSG any faster around the track?
I need to choose which gearbox and most of the Gti circuit racers in the UK have gone back to manual from DSG.
thanks
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG converted track car
Post by: teo_parvu on July 23, 2018, 08:06:28 am
Hi! Sure it is faster, that's why some TCR cars are using it.
Manual is a lot more fun and involving, but when it comes to pure laptimes, DSG is way better.
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG converted track car
Post by: bricksnmortar on July 23, 2018, 12:58:55 pm
Thanks Teo. Jabba in UK told me that racers were going back to manual boxes because of the weight distribution (20kg more over one of the front wheels) so the weight across each wheel isn't as balanced and because the DSG box doesn't engine brake as much so the lap times weren't any faster in the Mk5 gti series. They said guys were even swapping the DSG box to go back to manual when they found it wasn't any faster in laptime so the race winners now were all manuals?
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG converted track car
Post by: teo_parvu on July 23, 2018, 01:12:41 pm
In a car this heavy, 20KG more on the front it's close to nothing and you could always balance it by moving the battery in the back. Also with a good AP Racing brake system, engine brake should be neglected, it makes almost no difference other than destabilizing the car without heel and toe downshifts.
I'm still to find a clutch that will work perfectly with 7000 rpm shift and engine brake without overheating in 1-2 really fast laps, after that refusing to get into gear. ;)
DSG is the future, whether we like it or not. With a really good remap it will also do some engine brake, but it will engage rough 1st and reverse. The engagement is hard and direct at 16 or more PSI clutch pressure.  :happy2:

Thanks Teo.

"I'm still to find a clutch that will work perfectly with 7000 rpm shift and engine brake without overheating in 1-2 really fast laps, after that refusing to get into gear. ;) "
Do you mean its hard to find a clutch in a manual box or a clutch in a DSG?

Is the lack of engine braking because the DSG slips its clutch when you come off the throttle or because it still keeps some fuel injected into the engine? Why would they do this, to protect the DSG box on throttle lift?
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG converted track car
Post by: teo_parvu on July 25, 2018, 06:29:10 pm
I mean a clutch for manual gearbox. One of the reasons to switch to DSG was the clutch, I had Southbend Stage 3 Endurance, a custom kit made by Atix Racing Solutions here in RO and I've driven fuscobal's Sachs Performance clutch. all of them awful. U simply cannot shift quickly at high rpm.
I don't know where the lack of engine break comes, but as said, I have engine break, maybe because of the aggressive tune.

Interesting, did your laptimes change when you put in the DSG or did you make other changes at the same time so you couldn't tell?
Who did your DSG tune? And did you put in a different DSG clutch? I see you put in a DSG cooler.

On slicks it doesn't bother me, it is not that intrusive on my Cupra, I just deactivate it from the button. Sometimes when i really exaggerate, I feel it, but that means loosing time anyway.

I've unmounted the sunroof with the rails and I've bolted a carbon plate directly on the roof. I've waterproofed it with windshield sealant.

And a video from the training sessions. The track is superb, unfortunately the camera was out of focus. At least it feels fast:

Nice work.  Certainly a lot of weight removed from the roof!  Approx 15kg with the glass panel?

TTE480 turbocharger ordered from www.all-stars-motorsport.com . I hope it is the right turbo for me.
It will take a while until I'll get it, because I've chose to upgrade my k04. Right now still waiting for their procedure to send it to TTE.
I will not push it all the way, I'm still with stock internals. Looking for 430-440 bhp.

I hope you like the turbo. It should be really good for track since you'll always run in high revs where you won't have any lag.

I hope so too. My current k04 setup is hard to beat on mid rpm's:

But my best 100-200 was 9.2 without aero mods and 9.8 with the rear wing on. I hope to get it a lot lower and not loose the exit speed on low rpms.

Yeap, you're pushing the K04 to its limits. With was petrol do you run usually? It's noticeable the difference in higher revs when I add octane booster to my RON98.

I was using OMV MaxxMotion 100plus, They say it's 100RON, but who knows.
My tuner said he tried octane booster without any noticeable improvement, that's why I haven't tried it. But I think I'll give it a try with the new turbo. ;)

What octane booster has he tried? I've always had good improvements on the road and on the dyno with the Nitrous Formula Race Octane Booster.

I don't know what he tried, but I'll make some 100-200 VBOX runs with and without and I'll judge myself. I would try Millers first, I can get it for free.

If you can get it for free, I'd always run it on my car and only on important races I'd go with the Nitrous Formula octane booster.  :signLOL:

I used that in my old n'asp VR6 a long time ago and it made the spark plug tips and piston crowns orange    It wasn't that good imo.  Couldn't advance more than a couple of degrees.

Years ago I had access to Sunoco 110 octane race fuel and I was able to advance My VR6 turbo's ignition a full 10 degrees in boost, and a good 15-20 degrees off boost.   10% throttle did the same job as 25% throttle on pump fuel!  Awesome stuff, but waaaaaay too expensive for regular use

WOOOW! That sounds awesome.
I'm concerned about more than 430-440 bhp and 600nm with stock clutches and stock internals. I'm already pushing it, good thing I'm only racing short sessions. With the new turbo that power should be achievable on pump gas.
Next step will be forged pistons & conrods and I'll try some race fuel.
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG converted track car
Post by: pudding on December 08, 2018, 07:27:26 pm
Yeah forged pistons  :happy2:  I had good luck with Wössner.  They're not as loose in the cylinders as say Wiseco or JE, so the oil consumption isn't high.  If you can, use drop-in ones and don't touch the factory honing.  That can also affect oil consumption.

Nice rods from Carillo would be cool  :happy2:  I think you can also use coated RS4 rod bearings in the EA113 as well for extra reliability  :happy2:

As for the clutch, you can use a TTRS pressure plate with stock or Helix friction plate, which is good for around 500lbft torque, maybe a bit more.

The weak link is the DMF, but not a lot you can do about that.  You could use a single mass flywheel I suppose if it's just for racing  :happy2:

Yes, the spark plugs tips get orange. Well, a couple of degrees is better than nothing. The engine can make around 15 HP more with the booster (following measures made with the factory K04 and what the tuner expected from the map with pump fuel). For a sporadic use, it’s good and much cheaper than 110 octane fuel.

Pud, you're an infinite source of knowledge.  :happy2:
Good to know that the TTRS pressure plate can be used on our platform. Fortunately after 2 awful single-mass clutch kits, I've switched to DSG. With increased clutch pressure software, it handles 580NM superb right now, but i don't know what will happen with new TTE480 torque numbers.

Carrillo rods are probably the best, but way too expensive and I don't think the rods are the weakest link. Was considering Tuscan rods and Mahle pistons, now I’m looking also at Wossner. If I got it right I should use 82.5. ;)

This upgrade is planned on the second part of the 2019 season, each advice is welcomed and appreciated. I've just started looking into it, because of the coming TTE.

What do you think about this kit?:
https://www.bar-tek-tuning.com/2-0l-tfsi-high-performance-pistons-conrods-set-mahle

Joaquim - 15 more hp is huge man, as I said, I appreciate all your knowledge and I hope to have the funds to try everything. So keep it coming and thanks!  :notworthy:

I've just spoke with my tuner who told me that he has 4 damaged Mahle motorsport pistons from different engines. They are not much better than BWJ semiforged Mahle and that he recommends JE but with service every 20k km.
Also he said that my engine should be ok for TTE480 without forged rods and pistons, and that I shouldn't worry. :scared:
In case of a failure most probably will be a piston, not a rod so there will be not much damage and that we can use 83mm pistons then.  :surprised:
Told me that my problem now will be fueling and that I should get a 165 bar valve.
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG converted track car
Post by: teo_parvu on December 10, 2018, 08:16:20 pm
After some ...  I've decided to be on the safe side and order that kit from Bar-Tek containing:

Mahle forged pistons 83mm bore and 9:1 CR
Their own Bar-Tek I Beam light rods - they say up to 1000hp
ACL Motorsport Bearings
ARP 2000 3/8 inches Connection Bolts

I hope it's the right choice because this will be a big hole on the budget, I will have to do some honing for the new pistons and revise the top side of the engine too. I already had some misfire on my last run and I suspect a valve. I will have to open the cylinder head anyway.
Title: Re: White "Lion" Cupra - DSG converted track car

Because I'll have to revise the cylinder head anyway, at least I'll do it right. I ordered the ARP 2.0 TFSI Head Stud Kit:

(https://i.ibb.co/DVBzkfy/204-4302-1.jpg) (https://ibb.co/DVBzkfy)

After 400+ bhp there is a risk of stretching the head bolts and lifting the top.

Mahle are the best pistons available  :happy2:  I suspect if your tuner has seen bad ones, it was probably because of a bad tune, or other factors.  I would take Wossner as a second choice and then Wiseco.  I don't like JE.  I've used them in the past and they were sloppy in the cylinders (bad piston slap when cold) and one of them scratched a bore in my VR6 and basically ended that block

I ran Wossner in my VR6 turbo for 60K miles with a lot of boost.  After that mileage they were spotless, the coating was still on the skirts.  Great pistons.

The OEM pistons are a special pressure casting with good quality material. They can take a lot of abuse but do give up eventually.  The main advantage of 4032 and 2618 piston alloys is the material is denser than cast, so can handle heavier loads before cracking.  Usually with aftermarket pistons, you will see a thicker top ring landing and reinforcements in the gudgeon pin area, which adds even more strength.  And they are lighter  :happy2:  You won't go wrong with Mahle.  They are OEM supplier to just about every high performance car maker out there  :happy2:

ARP head bolts, great move!  Get some ARP rod bolts as well, although they might come with the Bar-Tek kit?  I do like Bar-Tek, again, you can't go wrong with those guys  :happy2:

9:1 is a little low for the compression.  You may find engine braking reduces, starting takes a little longer and off boost response suffers a little, but you may not notice these things in a race car    But the up side is you can run more boost safely and also make up the compression loss with more ignition timing  :happy2:

Hey, really glad to read this. I'm happy then, I've made the right decision. VR6 turbo, WOOOW...better cars, better times
Was concern a bit about this operation, never rebuilt an engine, at least not the main block. The only repaired part was the cylinder head when the variator chain broke.

Got ARP rod bolts as well, you're right they come with the kit.

I've spoke with Bartek Bartoszewicz from Bar-Tek, who, I must mention, is a really helpful guy, he is responding my emails within minutes even late in the evening. He said that 9:1 compression is when using their race gasket. I will use a new OEM gasket. Mahle PowerPak+ pistons are really 9.3:1, which I hope it's good.

These PowerPak Plus pistons for TFSI are forged from M142 alloy which combines the strength of 2618 and the oem behaviour of 4032. They are triple coated first with a phosphate dry film to protect the pin bores from galling. Next, MAHLE’s proprietary anti-friction Grafal is applied to the skirts. Finally, to withstand the higher cylinder temperatures and pressures, the top ring grooves are hard anodized to protect against micro-welding.
