Exhaust heat shield

Blue GTI:
Rearmost (under boot) exhaust heat shield is rattling like hell, a couple of the mounting points on it have corroded/broken, would heat from standard rear silencer cause any damage to underside of the car if I just took it off? Has anyone else done this? Cheers in advance.
