Good light for detailing?

3M sun gun is pretty good....at £479 it should be.... Instructions how to make your own on detailing world.

A decent halogen light (security type light) on a frame will do a pretty good job....

The home made swirl spotters as mentioned are good. Either make one yourself or see if anyone on DW is selling them.
Alternatively, a little hand held LED torch can be useful on darker colours.

For bigger portable lights, halogen are ok but metal halide is the way to go really. Search on eBay and there are plenty for sale. 150w will be plenty and show up pretty much all defects on any paint colour (including silvers/whites)

I use a 2000 lumen bike light, it's really bright and cost around £65

Freestanding LED units can be had for £15 and Halogen towers for about £40.

Ideally you want a few of each as certain defects depending on the type and colour of car may only show up under certain lights.
Usually an LED light source is fine for dark or lights
But I found halogen doesn't work very well on silver/light/white cars.

Found within 30 seconds. I'm sure you could find cheaper still.

Failing that any decent torch with a little flat surface would be better than nothing.
