You need an open ended 15mm(?) spanner on the swuad bit on the tensioner, take it up all the way and the belt goes floppy.
Just don't slip off as it can really hurt your hand.

If you are dojng it alone, then best to prop the tensioner open with a little drill bit/allen key L, I usually just have a mate assist.

You were right, just checked this morning and I think it's the alternator.  (Turns both ways)
