rear wheel bearing
« on: January 09, 2010, 12:28:52 pm »
Hi im just after a little more info on the replacing of a rear wheel bearing. i searched and found the free pdf files posted on here and it looks straight forward so going to give it a go. Im just wondering what tools i will need if there are any special ones im not aware of. also is there any torque settings anyone is aware of? also does anybody know any thing else that might be of help.
any help appreciated
Lloyd

Are you sure its not tyre rumble your getting??

What tyres are you running?

If you have Dunlop sportmax, they deform across the tread making the rear sound like the wheel bearings are rumbling.

just a thought. Tis a common complaint.

Just make sure you have the right size socket, its a bit of a strange size IIRC.  When we did the one on my Ibiza they had to pack a big socket with paper towel to get it off!

I apologise, just looked on www.vagcat.com and it appears that they've changed the design so its now secured with just 1 M16x1.5x70 bolt.

Any news?
Thinking of changing mine, but currently got the dunlop noise.
How much from the dealer?
What tools did you need?
How long did it take?
Cheers

Hi mate sorry taken so long to reply
Got the bearing done on my driveway and it was fairly easy i read one of the guides in this section of the forum under Free Golf Mk5 official workshop manuals one of the wheel bearing ones. its basically remove wheel then brake caliper and disc. once these are removed then take off the dust cover and you will see the bolt that needs removing this is the only trouble i had because i needed a special bit, i think it was a m18 spline, but i got this sorted before i started by taking the new bolt to my local tool supplier. once thats out then its pull of the old hub and bearing ,its one unit, and then fit the new one and replace other parts in reverse order. i used one of the guides to get the right torque settings too.

I didnt buy my new bearing from VW i went to my local parts dealer and it cost me around £55 so not too much and it took me about an hour as it was the first time doing one but it is very easy.

it really is simple and i would definitely reccomend doing it and save some cash dont know what VW would charge but sure it wouldnt be cheap.

hope this helps mate  :happy2:

You get quite a distincive sound at different speeds.
Hard to describe but an undulating groan/whirr?

If you can jack the car up there should be no play or movement if you tug on the wheels.

But as mentioned, some Tyres can replicate this noise.
I was convinced mine were shot when I got the car. Had a test run out with MatEd30 who diagnosed Tyres
