Edition 30 - No Compression
« on: December 18, 2016, 08:21:34 pm »
Hi guys,

My Edition 30 has been having some problems in the last week. It had a misfire low down in the revs which was diagnosed as a misfire in cylinder 1. It felt like a bad coil to me.
I replaced all 4 coils along with the spark plugs for good measure. This did not fix the issue.
Yesterday I had a compression test done by a garage and that displayed no compression (0) in cylinder 1. There was also some oil where the spark plugs sit in cylinder 1 and 2. All other cylinders showed matching PSI (circa 190)

The car still drives but obviously there is a major problem with the engine.

Has anybody had this issue before? Can anybody advise on options? I can go down the strip down option but im thinking its better and probably more cost effective to just put in an S3 engine in it. Anybody selling an engine? The mileage on the car is 112k so not exactly low mileage

Lots of these engines have cracked a piston ring landing, which causes a misfire & a loss of compression, although yours sounds worse as you have no compression whatsoever. Never heard of that - sounds like it's running on 3 cylinders, which would sound rough.

Replacement used engines are around £1500

Yes its showing 0 but its still driving on 3 cylinders.

Would it worth rebuilding or replacing? Im thinking of the used S3 engine route and refreshing the parts on that - cambelt, chain gasket etc

All depends how bad the bore is scored on the block

Is it remapped?  Any chain replacement work done recently?

I had the same problem last month.

A valve burned out and had a piece missing. Had the chain replaced whilst the head was off and new gaskets.

£700

No it is completed standard and I am not aware of any chain replacement done in my ownership (8 months)

Looking at the history there isnt any mention of it anywhere.

Interesting with the valve burned RMK. Was it still driving but running like a bag of nails?

Did you fit the uprated exhaust valves whilst the head was off?

I am looking to get the engine rebuilt rather than repair.

Its getting stripped down tomorrow for inspection so I will keep you gents posted. Anything I should do differently when rebuilding it? Anything uprated needed?

I think you need to decide what you want the car to do. if you have an aim goal then its eaiser to decide what parts you need.

Rods and pistons would be the minimum id say, you could also uprate the head with valves since your pulling it apart anyway.
but thats all pointless if your sticking with a k03 turbo etc

It has the ko4 turbo doesnt it? Its a BYD engine code.

I just want it to be reliable. Im not looking for big power.

If your not going bigger than k04 then you could leave the rods and pistons as they are tbh.
as a minimum check the pistons rings as they can go before the rods

Let's wait for the inspection report first but I wouldn't rebuild it personally.  Get a decent used engine instead, either another BYD or a CDL from the S3.

I have looked at a replacement engine. BYD and CDL you are looking at £1700 for a good one plus fitting (circa £500) depending on if it comes complete or not.

Then I would want to replace the belts and chains on that aswell along with the head gasket while im doing it. I would have thought it would come to 2.5k up and running

I estimate a worse case scenario (head and bottom end needs replacing plus pressure testing, skimming plus new belts etc) would be less than £2k

Ok so small update it looks like an issue with a burnt valve as per @RMK87 's post

Replacement head time. Did you have anything else done? Cambelt, chain and gasket I guess but anything else ?
