That is definitely a symptom of an unhappy MAF.  You can try a bit of MAF cleaner on it to see if it helps.

Another thing you can check is the cam sensor.  Mine was covered in metallic dust.  I popped a new one in and the mpg improved drastically, as did the throttle response.  I recently put a magnetic sump plug in to try and reduce that problem.

pudd- how do I fit a cam sensor? Is it easy? Cleaning the maf is straight forward but I am crap at car diy. How much are cam sensors?
Thought id give the maf cleaner a go before buying a new one. Really funny matey that my car seems to have exactly the annoying little things as yours!  :happy2:

Yeah that guide covers it, cheers Mij.  Dead easy  :happy2:   Sensor is around £40 with the VAT if I remember, so not expensive for a part that lasts at least 10 years  :happy2:

Other cars with the same problem is good in a way as there is a definite problem.  Isolated issues are a pain in the neck for diagnosis!

Right, removed MAF, sprayed the metal part only, let it dry and put it back. No difference! Should I have sprayed in the plastic housing it came out of?

You spray it into the hole that faces the battery when fitted to the airbox mate  :happy2:

That metal plate is just the backing for the electronics I think.

As per our discussions, ordered one of these to see if it helps.  Well, both sets actually as I'm not sure if my end cap is 79.5mm or 84.5mm!
