Cambelt and Water Pump - Cheshire/Lancashire
« on: June 13, 2018, 10:13:33 am »
Good morning all,

Had my GTi about three weeks now and loving it, the car is coming up for a cambelt change in the next few thousand miles/months. I didn't buy the car locally and have never had a VAG car before so am wondering, does anyone in the Cheshire/Lancashire area (I travel between the two regularly) know a good VAG specialist for doing the cambelt & water pump?

Live in Nantwich so anywhere close to this would be ideal!

Jack

Main dealer is also worth considering when they do their £349 deal, inc water pump.   Normal price is £449.   VW are bound by internal governance to replace all of the engine mount bolts though, where as most indies do not.   Engines dropping out from reusing the bolts is a fact, not a myth.

does the offside engine mount have to come off to do the cam belt and water pump?

It does indeed.  And also the bracket the mount bolts to.  Lots of stretch bolts to replace unfortunately, which are all included in the price at VW.   Normally I would let my indie do it, but at £349, I can't argue with genuine parts, 2 year warranty, wash / vac and courtesy car.

A full set of stretch bolts for all of  the mounts comes to about 40 quid alone!

I was in tps last week and the bloke was adamant those engine/gearbox mounts bolts aren't stretch. Ecs say that they are though.

Is this price an offer from vw that anyone can get?

TPS chap is wrong.  All of the engine mount bolts are XXnm + 90 degrees, therefore stretchers.  Main dealers are no longer allowed to sign off a job unless stretch bolts are replaced, due to an engine dropping out in Italy fairly recently.   VW perform ruthless spot checks on dealers these days, so they don't chance it anymore.

Yeah the £349 promotion price is available to everyone, when they do it.  Normally once every 2 years is the pattern I've noticed so far.

I had mine done at VW also, pretty sure it was £399 though for cam and pump.
