ED30 Dampers/Springs
« on: February 22, 2019, 10:38:37 am »
My ED30 needs new front Dampers. Given the age and mileage 108,000 I am going to change the Springs and Mount/Bearings as well.
I know the OEM dampers/springs are rebadged Sachs items, checking Euro Car Parts I can get Sachs Dampers/Springs for just over £200 on Sale, Id expect to pay
double this If I buy from the dealer.
Anybody else bought these from ECP , are they the same without the VW branding tax ?

Cheers.

Looking to do the same and thinking the same thing. Carparts4less, their sister site, may be cheaper.

Want to get rid of my H&R ultralow coilovers
Will be up for sale if anyone is interested by the way

Dampers were ~£60 each from VW last time I checked.  Very reasonable for how long they last imo.

Yes VW dampers are Sachs, but that doesn't mean the cheap Sachs ECP sell are the same quality.   I don't know where this "it's the same thing without the tax" myth comes from.   Someone on here fitted that ECP stuff to his recently and ended up with a very bouncy rear end because the dampers were pants.  You have been warned

I think it's only very early GTIs that were 50mm (2005-2006) but a ruler will confirm, or calipers if you have them.  Measure the diameter of the damper where it slides into the hub knuckle.

Blimey! My fronts were completely shot by 50k miles. I got the B12 kit (B8 dampers with Eibach springs) and it transformed the handling. Probably would have been a big enough improvement even with new standard dampers, but Id recommend the B12s - still feeling awesome 25k later.  There is a "pro" kit with minimal lowering or a sport kit which is around 25mm (and perfect).   I changed the mounts too - mine were fine but def worth doing at 100k.
