As above what are people’s opinions?
Which company gives the best vfm ?
Do I need a few mods before a remap ??

Just do it.
Revo probably the best, I am very happy with my pendle performance one however.
No mods required.

There is a place on the outskirts of Gloucester that does the APR remap, I was going to give them a call .

Pro - Faster acceleration

Cons are the usual boring ones - shorter lifespan of most things and reduced mpg.

Not worried about mpg.
I do 14 miles per week and Prescott hill climb drivers day a couple of times per year.

If it's a manual, you will more than likely need a clutch.  An uprated HPFP is a wise investment also.

It’s a DSG
I am going to Turner race developments near Gloucester.
They didn’t mention I would need a HPFP for a stage 1 map but I will ring them tomorrow to double check.

No need for HPFP for stage 1, DSG will not need any upgrades unless you go for Stage2+ then a DSG map would be a good idea.

I will be sticking with stage 1.
Next on my list will be the suspension refurb.
A stiffer rear arb will be fitted along with some lowering springs.

Fuel and cool ie HPFP and s3 intercooler are helpful on these engines whatever stage of tuning you choose. Since the hpfp is cam driven, its output is determined by engine revs and can struggle in the midrange when the torque is surging. You’re looking at @£350 parts for Vis internals and a used s3 intercooler and a custom tune from the likes of Rtech will maximise their potential.

Unless you murder the clutch it will be fine for a while yet.

I had an APR map done on our BWA engined Passat, being an estate it is a heavy old thing. I ended up with 300 lb/ft of torque so I am careful with the clutch as much as I can, I don't let it labour in sixth on the motorway etc. (Not that it struggles, it just goes like stink no matter what gear it is in).
