R8 coils - new info
« on: March 30, 2019, 10:14:09 am »
These have been discussed 129,873 times and the general consensus is - they are the same as the black ones, just prettier.  Or are they?

I stumbled onto this video last night and was surprised to see the R8 coil kicking out so many MJ of energy.  It was ranked 6th out of 16 for strongest spark energy!  Pretty surprised by that.

The video goes into great detail about measuring coil output.  Simple resistance comparisons tells you nothing, hence why previous information was invalid because nobody has tested them like this before.

So it is very likely the red coils are indeed much stronger than the black ones  :happy2:

But does that equate to more power?

Only if the stock coils struggle to ignite the charge from remaps and/or big turbo conversions.

The engine does seem to run a bit smoother with red coils + iridiums vs black coils and stock plugs.

This was my experience also, smoother and more responsive.

Good find pudding, it appears that people’s theories and “I’m sure they’ve made a difference” etc etc.. have physically been confirmed.
Plus the red ones make the bay look nicer ;-P

p.s: the R8 coils came 7th (just proving I watched it lol)

So did I!  The black coil is a totally different part number to the red coil, so I guess that could be more evidence.   Normally VW just change 1 number or letter if it's the same base part with a subtle change, or a handed part.

It's true what the chap in the video said, in that if you don't charge the coils up with the right dwell time, you won't get the benefit......but apparently the red coils are 'smart' and won't fire if the dwell is wrong.   As they work fine with the GTI ECUs, I guess the dwell time is right and we are indeed getting the benefit

Thanks pudding for yet more great research without your info I wouldn't have bothered with the Red coil packs as all info before pointed to there being no difference having had new black packs about 18 months ago I can say that the Red ones with the same iridium plugs do make a difference to the drive as you said more responsive
Thanks again for all your posts
