Scanning software
« on: April 07, 2019, 11:32:26 am »
After picking up my mk5 yesterday, the exhaust check  light has appeared, after checking what equipment I need to run a check it appears that it can range from ebay £7 cable to a £250 + cable.

When I had a Mazda I used a Cobb devise that I could check things with take logs and use for self mapping.

As I need to scan my car to check and clear the code, what's the one to go for, would love to be able to also take logs so can check on performance.

Advise apprecaited.

Vcds. Buy a decent one from eBay and not the cheap blue cabled ones. Mine does live logs and code deletes.

As above don't buy the £3 blue cable from Ebay with the old 409.1 vag com included, it doesn't work on mk5s as they use CAN for diagnostics.

Proper VCDS costs from £225 from places like Gendan.co.uk https://www.gendan.co.uk/vcds-hex-usb-can.php?gclid=CjwKCAjw-bLVBRBMEiwAmKSB81lHGLceHkn4eE1nMPtuVLi2ARL3HNBDvLq8ffs1hVpbGpUrngPGVBoCqj8QAvD_BwE

Other (cheaper) choice is OBD eleven it's an dongle/ app for Android device (IOS support coming soon)

I have this and have been able to diagnose misfires and ABS lights in the past year.

It is cloud based so you need a decent internet connection being the only downside I can see.

Cheers, I will look to get vcds in the future, I managed to get a dongle of amazon for about £9 which read and cleared the code.
