Slipping Locking Nut Key
« on: April 28, 2019, 09:12:18 am »
Need advice..

The locking nut is stuck.  The socket jumps of the slot as soon as I apply pressure.  The head is worn down to a needle point on parts where the other nuts are flat.

1) Is it as simple solution as hammering a socket round the outer circumference? The gap between the outside of the socket and the wheel is really narrow.

2) Will it have to be drilled out?

3) Can I get the individual bolt replaced from VW to match the key or is it a whole new set of locking nuts.  If so, VW or an After market set?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi @El1M1N8OR my advise to your questions:
1) worth a try.. you don't know until you've tried. You can also get locking wheel nut removers from ebay/amazon. (don't know quality etc, but would have thought its worth a try for £20) or go to a garage who does locking wheel nut removals (some are even mobile) and chuck them a score.
2) if number 1 fails, this will more than likely be the solution.
3) not sure, but at a guess they'll probs want to sell you the whole lot. Give VW a call and see what they say for sure. Or if you're not overly bothered, remove all of them and just get 4 new normal bolts. wont know with the covers over them :)

Thanks guys..

The gargage was able to remove the offender along with the other locking nuts when the car was in getting the suspension done.

Not sure how they done it.

I got the tri-lock bolts £24.99 from Ebay delivered today and fitted them in.  Not took it for a run yet but will do very soon.

For anyone the bolt size is M14 x 1.5.

Thanks again  :happy2:
