Saved from the scrap heap. 150,000 mile MK5 GTI.
« on: June 11, 2019, 08:01:49 PM »
(Copied over from my thread on PistonHeads)

I’m not sure where to start, but here goes! I took a brave pill the other day and bought a 150,000 mile MK5 Golf GTI for the princely sum of £1200!

It was a trade in at a local dealer that was originally going to be scrapped on one of their “Scrappage“ deals, however they deemed the car too good for the scrap yard and changed the deal at the last minute.

I was expecting the car to be an absolute nail, however it drove extremely well for the mileage with only a faint knock from one of the bushes. Everything else felt tight and despite the mileage it felt like a good’un!

It’s been well maintained throughout it’s life by a local independent, having had an annual service every 10,000 miles up to 120,000.

My first job is to do the cam belt, water pump and a full service. I’ve got some good contacts in the trade so all being well, I should have a useable MK5 GTI for just less than shed money!

I plan to keep the car long term, I’ve always fancied a Golf GTI and I’ve got a little more time on my hands for a project now.

I’ve already had the cam belt + water pump replaced along with the cam follower for the HPFP. I’ve also ordered a new PCV along with a new diverter valve.

The next job will be to source some 18” Monza alloys (as I’m not 100% sure on the BBS wheels), refurb the drivers seat bolster and sort the A/C which appears to be lifeless!

Thanks for reading! Ta, Will.

Looks like it's in really nice condition.
I'd say the BBS wheels alright, reps or genuine?
That HU needs changing straight away though!
Had the same in my 32, swapped it for a Rcd330.

Thanks! A little servicing goes a long way doesn’t it?

Ta! I think the wheels are genuine. It does have BBS in raised letters on the actual rim. I don’t think the wheels are for me though, I’ll get some Monzas and try to move the BBS wheels on I think.

Thanks for the heads up on the stereo. That looks just the ticket. Are they plug and play?

Will.

Yeah they plug into the original harness.
The only issue you'll have is that your canbus will need to be changed to a later model.
If you don't you'll get battery drain from any later spec VW head units including the Rcd330.

Thanks for that!

Although...what’s a CANBUS?  :ashamed:

Waaayyyy to clean to have even been considered scrap! What was wrong with previous owners...

I like the wheels, they're different!

Looks a clean base as well for the mileage. Well done.

Looks really nice but I agree with you, I don't think the wheels suit it.

Thanks! It’s coming together slowly but surely.

I’ve not been updating this post as often as I should, however I’ve done/are doing a few bits and bobs at the moment. Since my last update I’ve...

Fitted a new cam belt kit with water pump
Fitted a new diverter valve
Fitted a new PCV
Fitted a new cam follower
Fixed sticking clutch pedal
Re-gassed the A/C
Fitted 18” Monza’s
Fitted some Continental Sport Contact 5 tyres
Fitted new light switch + drivers door pull

This week I’ll be...

Fitting new front wishbones along with new bushes and ball joints
Fitting new lower gearbox mounts
Fitting upgraded subframe bolts with spacers

Here’s a cheeky little pic of how she stands

Thanks, Will.

Are your Monzas painted? It makes them look like the 17” Denver wheels.
Have you already sold your Pescara wheels?

I see no mention of Radio or CanBus in either of those lists

They have been yes. I’m going to have them professionally refurbed at some point, however for the time being they’ve been rubbed down and rattle canned so they are presentable. The Monzas cost me £60 (!) and were quite badly painted, however they look much better now.

I’m going to sort the stereo and canbus once I’ve sorted the mechanical bits and pieces.

Yes, I’ve sold the wheels.

Regards, Will.
