Squeaky front suspension
« on: September 10, 2019, 08:26:50 pm »
Hi all newby here 1st post. Had my mk5 gti for around 6 months about 6 weeks ago it developed a squeaking/creaky front suspension. Been in garage twice to diagnose 1st visit the ball joint, top mount and strut was replaced which solved the noise. But few weeks later it appeared again went back in and the spring was replaced which solved the noise. But the creaky squeak has come back?? Does anyone have any ideas on what it can be? Thanks, Ryan.

Creaking/squeaking under what circumstances?  When steering at speed, steering at full lock, over bumps, when braking?  Ball joint, strut and spring replaced singly or both sides?

Hint: No info upfront generally attracts zero responses.

Noted, thanks pudding. Creaking happens at lower speeds driving straight and cornering. Since my post it's been in 2 more times. Both top mounts, both springs,  both ball joints,  both struts and most recently (yesterday) replaced all front subframe bolts and control arm bushes and anti roll bar bushes regressed. Drove it from garage and as usual after having work done no noises. Put a few miles on it today and the creaking is coming back??

Sounds like it could be the infamous subframe movement problem.  The bolt holes in the subframe are a lot bigger than the bolt diameter, and therefore allows a small amount of movement.  VW did come up with a toothed washer that digs into the subframe, but it doesn't solve it in the long term.  The only way to fix it for good is with a subframe collar kit from TyrolSport, or I think ECS tuning do a similar kit also.

As well as sorting the noise for good, it also made the handling more consistent on mine, so it's well worth doing.

This issue also happens on other brands of car too, so it's not just VW.  It's just a sloppy method of attaching the subframe in general.

Brake calipers/carriers can also creak at low speeds, so have a look over those whilst you're there.

Mine also creaks on the passenger side when fully locked to the right at slow speeds. Little noises are the worst! Can’t figure out what it is.

Creaks and cracks and low speed and high load is usually the subframe.

The ecs kit seem a lot more reasonably priced than the tyrol kit. I'll look at the calipers next and if not I'll  get the ecs kit . Thanks

Spacer kit has been fitted and has not made a blind bit of difference? Still making the creaking sound. I really dont know where to look next?

Spacer kit?  The Tyrol/ECS collar inserts or the OEM toothed washer things?

Were the new top mounts, ball joints and springs n' things OEM or pattern parts?
