Edition 30 manual gearbox

Happy new year to you all...….Hope 2020 brings you all happiness and modifications   :drinking:

My gearbox has decided its had enough and called time. Looking at finding a replacement to get overhauled hopefully with a diff then stuck in the car. Been looking and there is so many different gearbox codes. Are all 6 speed manual gearboxes from the MK5 GTI essentially the same?
What clutch kits would you recommend also? Looking for a as stock a peddle feel as possible but with a bit more capabilities?

Probs best to replace your box with the same code, can’t go wrong then. As for clutch kit, I think the TTRS combo goes well and has the OEM feel. I’ve not personally experienced this but read some good things on it. You’ll want to google it or search on here for the exact combo as I can’t remember if it’s stock flyhweel and TTRS clutch or TTRS flywheel. So look into it. Stay clear from performance SACHS or HELIX as you’ll get a stiff pedal and way beyond OEM feel. I’ve experienced those. Good luck

Iirc the combo is ttrs pressure plate with a mk5 oem organic friction plate as the ttrs crank runs a different spline fitting to our cars. Is a popular mod stateside and forms the basis of the RSR clutch kit. Would be tempting to go for a sensibly weighted SMF at the same time.

Thanks or the reply buddy. Would you happen to know the gearbox code for the eddie. Getting conflicting info just want to be sure. Thanks for the clutch info. Was thinking of that or the RTS clutch kit I think it is. Believe the TTRS route is a standard dual mass and a modified pressure plate from the TT. The SACHS and HELIX from previous experience ( on a different car) were very heavy.

Will look into all that. Thank you very much again for the help. Always appreciated.

That looks awesome that clutch kit. Very close to the RSR kit and they are getting very good reviews. Not sure on the single mass. Last car I changed and it was a nightmare. To be fair it was massively reduced in weight.
Will have a look into the flywheel lots of food for thought now. Really liking the look of that clutch set up.

I always prefer an OEM solution where possible; there’s often too many issues and disappointments with aftermarket stuff. Let us know how you get on as both Pudding and I looked into this a while back but parked it until the work needed doing. 

As an aside, it’s worth removing the restrictor from the stock bleeder block for more precise clutch engagement. Free mod!

You need to look on your existing gearbox for the specific variant code.  It's stamped into the casing on a flat section at the back, near the dogbone IIRC.

All of the manuals in the MK5 are the O2Q model, but there are variances for R32, diesel and GTI.  Pretty sure the same box is fitted the GTI, Pirelli and ED30 though.  R32 has shorter gearing iirc, if that takes your fancy.  I know it does me.  The stock gearing is way too tall.

The Helix clutch is OK if you get the newer one with their own billet cover plate.  Their older kit which uses the Sachs sporting cover plate is f'kin terrible.  Don't ask how I know.

There's a lot of internet hoo ha about DMFs being a necessity to absorb damaging engine harmonics, but many people are fine with SMFs.   I guess the long term effects aren't known yet, but I f'kin hate DMFs.  They are an utter abomination.

My clutch (helix) and DMF are fooked and due for replacement.  Think I'll be going down the TTRS cover plate and OEM MK5 disc route personally, with a new OEM DMF.  Pattern ones are garbage and last 2-3 years tops.  Again, don't ask how I know  :grin:

R32 gearbox will have a different casing for the 6 cyl engine surely?

+ transfer box and 4wd gubbins...

Thanks for the great info as usual Pudding. I'm currently weighing up my options with the car. Apart from gearbox and the need for an exhaust ( The quality of the milek SS exhaust are shocking considering the price) mechanically she is sound, body work however is in need of some TLC and paint.
The gearbox is laying on the garage floor as I type as well as the exhaust. Not sure if it is worth rebuilding the gearbox, new exhaust and paint to get her where I want it or break her for parts ( No MOT failed on a holed exhaust). Be the best part of £2K to mechanically sort her and another couple of grand to paint. Absolutely loved the car but have fallen massively out of love with her just now. Not sure if I wait and see if the love returns and bring her up to scratch, fix the mech issues and sell on ( probably loosing monies in the process) or break out for parts  :thinking:
Will do so reserch into pricing of the clutch kit I do like the sound of that clutch. Looks like you can get a pre made kit with a SMF or DMF. I have no noise off the DM or clutch slip but if ive gone to the trouble of removing the box would be insanity not to replace clutch, flywheel and release bearing when I'm there.
I have the luxury of a garage and time so could just fix in dribs and drabs ( Now own a caddy Maxi for everyday running and transporting the motorbikes to tracks). Cant decided what to do just now.

If the love returns, distance isn’t an excuse - I’m in Edinburgh, I sent my Lupo box down on a pallet to Mart for rebuild and Quaif - and he lightened the flywheel by a third

Yep, but I was thinking more of swapping the gearset/final drives over than using the whole box.  I think the R32 box will bolt onto the FWD bell housing though.
